    It’s funny you posted this video. I was just offered an old 45” leclerc loom and told myself I need a sign if I should jump in an do it. I went onto TH-cam to do some research and this video is first in my feed...I’m calling it my sign lol

    So thrilled I found you! watched the laser knitting first as I need to change how I use my hands. Also love weaving-haven't done it for a long while (still a beginner) but I have this exact loom you are using the Mira. I love how I could put it together myself. thanks so much for all you are dong for this community. I spin too! looking forward to seeing more of all you are doing.

    This is great. I decided today was going to be the day - a few years into occasionally googling things - that I was going to understand all the different floor looms. I knit, crochet, and spin, but haven't gotten into weaving... yet. You do a lot of things too many other videos don't, really diving into the hows and whys of things, which I crave. Thanks for all the info!

    Your logic was so refreshing to hear! I learned on Leclerc counterbalance looms and would like to own one too. There are so many used in the GTA (even restored) for sale so I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on buying new. My floor loom is a multishaft jack mechanism.

    So interesting! My friend recently acquired a secondhand loom without any kind of manual. It was still partially put together so now its a big puzzle on how to get it together. We are both new to weaving, so all this information together is super helpful. I am now positive that the loom is a counterweight loom, and i can understand the pulleys

    Wow, congratulation on moving into your new wonderful space! Wishing you great success and joy in the new studio. I have a wonderful old Leclerc counterbalance loom that sadly has been dismantled for some years. I was gifted it when I was in my teens and many decades later I still have and cherish it.
    I am currently transforming my living room into a weaving studio - out with the couch, in with the loom. I have another (8 harness jack) loom that will be used in the space. Perhaps the Leclerc will be dusted off next year.

    Felicia, thank you so much for generously sharing information about your new loom. I have an older Leclerc counterbalance loom that is narrower than your Mira II and has been tricked out with a sectional warp beam. It’s a bit intimidating, I’ll admit. But you have inspired me to get back at it! Your scarf is amazing and looks wonderful on you. Good luck in your new studio space!

    I have an old, giant, Union 2 shaft counter balance loom with 42" shafts with wire heddles. I got it for a song($300) so I couldn't resist buying it. The owners mother made rag rugs on it for sale at craft shows. I have made scarves and dish towels on it. The dish towels seem to be more popular. I usually use 6/2 cotton for the warp and 8/2 cotton for the weft. 256 warp threads ends up being closer to 15 inches after washing to relax the yarn. A niece has a half dozen that I wove nearly five years ago and they show no appreciable wear. I used cotton yarn from The Woolery.

    Brand new weaver here - I'm so glad you're talking about counterbalance looms and helping to bust the "they can't do unbalanced weaves" myth. :) I have a Fanny that I restored in March and learned a ton about it. I will say - Miss Fanny didn't fit through my doorways when I moved her from the dining room to a bedroom. I took apart more than I do to thread her. :) What size reed did you choose? I look at my 12 dent reed and don't think I could sley a fingering weight through it. Or I guess more specifically, I think it unlikely to live through the whole project.

    This Mira looks like a beautiful loom! I have thought long and hard about which floor loom I want (currently have a 25in 4 harness table loom) and am close to settling on a Glimakra countermarche, probably the standard that is 120cm (about 47 inches) weaving width. 8 shafts are enough for me, and they come up periodically, used. I do have a question, tho. Why would one choose a counter balance over a countermarche when there is a choice? For instance, the Glimakra countermarche can be converted easily to counter balance, but why would you want to do that? Thank you!

    Hi Felicia, thanks so much for this informative video! I recently acquired an old Orco 74 as my first loom (I may have bitten off more than I can chew 😅), which is also a counterbalance loom and have been trying to wrap my head around the tie up. I think the book I’m using has patterns for a rising shed loom, so for mine I would tie up opposite shafts in order to get it to work right? So if the pattern says 1 & 2 for the first treadle I tie up 3 & 4, and if it says 1 & 4 I tie up 2 & 3?

    Hello, Felicia! I always knitting as a hobby. I found your videos on TH-cam. And discovered WEAVING and fell in love with looms. Your explanation on weaving, dyeing and knitting are awesomeI. So, I purchased my first Kromski Heddle Loom and I just LOVE it. I find that my task is quicker (yay). However, I've gotten the bug and I would like to purchase another loom. I have been searching and learning about other looms. The Ashford, Schacht Mighty Wolf Floor loom and Louet Spring. I decided on Louet Spring Floor Loom because less back pain for me. It will take some time to saving but this will be my last purchase and forever keep. Your explanation on weaving counterbalance helped me a lot on the decision.
    Question: I living in Florida. My concern is the humidity. Should I apply anything to protect the (wood) loom?
    Thank you and I can't wait to sign up to school of sweetgeorgia for lessons.

    Hi Felicia. Love your new loom! question. If you leave the cut warp on the loom (leave it threaded through the reed), does that become the 'dummy warp' if your next project has a similar tie up?

    • @sweetgeorgia
      @sweetgeorgia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Exactly! I leave the cut warp on the loom with enough to tie onto and then that becomes my dummy warp. So basically if you create a "template" for the kinds of things you might want to weave over and over, it become very quick and simple. I actually threaded the heddles of my Baby Wolf loom LAST fall and have been using the same leftover warp, over and over. I started off as 252 ends and gradually my projects have become slightly narrower and narrower and I've dropped a few ends with each project. Now I'm down to about 156 ends for making scarves :)

    • @sweetgeorgia
      @sweetgeorgia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! I'll just tie the new warp onto the ends of the old warp. And yes, there are six treadles below and I tied them up to the shafts to create the 2 plain weave sheds and 4 twill sheds.

  • @rebeccag52

    Hi, Felicia! Any advice on using a counterbalance loom for double weave? The books I have all assume a jack loom with a rising shed.

    • @sweetgeorgia
      @sweetgeorgia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oooh… I’m actually currently weaving a double weave sampler on my countermarche loom and it’s working amazingly, but the tie-up was a little mind-bending. Yes, I think jack looms would be more straightforward too. With the counterbalance, this is more tricky because you need to lift or lower three shafts at a time, making it an unbalanced weave structure. My counterbalance has a shed regulator that can help improve the shed. If you don’t have a shed regulator, then I would suggest slimmer shuttles to pass through the shed and also maybe narrower warps (does that defeat the purpose??) so that you don’t accidentally catch the wrong warp ends in your weaving (causing the two layers to get stuck together). Good luck!!!

  • @jstallings2070
    @jstallings2070 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I noticed you have Tesolv heddles. Is that standard or did you request them instead of metal? I ask because I saw where you switched them on your Baby Wolf and you mentioned the shaft weight was off slightly after the change. Thanks!

    • @sweetgeorgia
      @sweetgeorgia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did request the Texsolv heddles since it was an option. The standard is the metal heddles. In this case, the Texsolv heddles work beautifully on the Mira. With the Baby Wolf, the shafts have to drop back into place when you take your foot off the treadle... the weight of the heddles actually helps the shaft drop down. I fixed the issue by attaching shock cord to each shaft and treadle to make the shafts “snap” back. It works well but all of that is completely unnecessary on the Mira. 🥰

    I’ve been weaving on a wolf pup and have been considering another loom. What is the difference between the counterbalance and the countermarch? Which one is the next step loom? Thanks you and loved the scarf!

    • @sweetgeorgia
      @sweetgeorgia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Countermarche looms are wonderful. Every shaft can go up or down independently and they don’t need to work in pairs. This comes in handy for weaving unbalanced weave structures. The tie up for countermarche looms is a bit more work though since every shaft needs to be tied to every treadle to indicate if it’s going up or going down. But I have my countermarche tied up very simply and I rarely have to change it. All depends on what you are weaving of course.

    I used to have a Glimakra 13 shaft countermarch loom which I sold when I took time off to start/run a nonprofit for 10 years, feeding kids. Now back to weaving. The tie-up of a countermarch pushes me away..can't seem to get my head around it. So, I currently have a Baby Wolf and Mighty Wolf (37" weaving width) -- both jack. Wanting to weave blankets and other wide items. Looking at Mira and Fanny for a 60" width loom next. How easy is it to weave twill and other unbalanced patterns on a counterbalance loom? I love some of my twill patterns a lot. Does it require a countermach loom?

    • @sweetgeorgia
      @sweetgeorgia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OH yes, I've been weaving twill blankets and twill towels on the Mira and Fanny with no trouble at all. I'm also weaving double weave (unbalanced weave) on the Mira and it's fine too. The shed might be a little smaller, but it's still totally doable!

For example, lets say you want to make herringbone, or a chevron pattern. How do you know what foot pedals to have come up at the right time to make the patten come out right? Thanks.

      Absolutely, thanks Phil! I would suggest exploring weaving drafts. Those drafts will show exactly how to thread the shafts, how to tie up the shafts to the treadles, and what order to treadle in order to produce the pattern you want. For the most comprehensive site of weaving drafts, you can check out handweaving.net

    Felicia, could you do video or even a course in SOS on the countermarch loom? I have just acquired a Varpapuu loom and am figuring it out on my own. There is not much info out there on working on these amazing looms. I’m about to beam my first project and then tie it up. I have Joanne Hall’s book on tying up a countermarch, but that’s it. I’d appreciate any feedback and like I said, I’d love a course in SOS!😘

    We have been researching floor looms and are impressed with Episode 125. The heddles appear to be a twine rather than metal yet the description found in retail websites list stainless steel heddles. Can you help us with some information? Many thanks.

    • @sweetgeorgia
      @sweetgeorgia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. These are Texsolv heddles (polyester material) ... you can learn more about Texsolv here: texsolv.se/ The loom comes standard with metal heddles, but you can ask to upgrade to the Texsolv heddles for an additional cost. I've woven with both and metal heddles are perfectly fine, but I like the quieter Texsolv heddles. Good luck with your loom search!

    Thanks for this lovely video - I am happy to now have a Binder Loom 2 shaft counterbalance floor loom. My searching online returns very limited information - this loom has Pasadena, CA on the side, and it may have been made in the 1940s or 1950s. I realize I can only produce tabby items - and that is great for me. There is no rust and the finish on the wood shows some beautiful distress marks, but nothing that looks like any functional or structural damage. I has the remnants of a prior project so I can at least see how it was tied along the back. There is a metal plate across the top of the castle which sticks out about 2 inches with a whole/eyelet in it and wonder if that was for some type of add on accessory to lift the shafts as you described in your video. I am an experienced sewist/costume/dress designer, spinner, crocheter etc., but weaving is new to me. My guildies have offered to come over and help warp it for me, and I would like to do as much research on it as possible to prepare for such a wonderful meeting. Do you have ideas on how I can find a 'manual' or other materials about this floor loom? You mentioned that counterbalance looms are still very popular worldwide - do you have suggestions for any international websites I should look at? Thank you for any additional information you might share. Your scarf is utterly gorgeous! I'm sure that even with just plain weave, this loom could produce very beautiful projects using amazing materials and thoughtful technique.

    If you had a dream weaving loom, what would it be and why?

    • @audreydeneui192

      All of them. Ha. (Maybe a Golding, because they're beautiful.) I was watching the part 1 video and I was intrigued when you were setting up the heddles and the pulleys. It just looked so nifty. I've never used a counterbalance. I love the Nilus LeClerc...mainly because those have a board across the castle where I can stick the shuttles I'm not using. I have a 40ish inch 8 harness Pendleton (the company in Sedona, AZ, not the blanket company in Oregon) in my garage and I'm trying to think of ways to lift it (that don't include lying on my stomach on damp, possibly oily, cement) so I can get at the treadles to tie up. If I have to get down there, I am NOT getting back up again any time soon without a crane! Most of the looms I have used are jack looms and rigid heddles, except for my warp weighted loom (I need to make new uprights for the beam).

      For shawls, scarves, dish towled, etc... something about 30" wide would be wide enough. If I were to weave rugs (assuming it will be large ..> 50" wide), I would want a loom that is 60".
      As for the type... definitely counter march or counter balance. 8 -shafts for sure. All a dream... .. maybe someone will build a dream loom.

      Sorry I hit send but what I wanted to ask is do you know why looms have three beams? It has a cloth beam in front the warp being on the back and then another warp beam close to the floor, I have no idea what that one's for do you know?

    Felicia, if you could only us one loom for the rest of your life, which type would you choose?

    • @sweetgeorgia
      @sweetgeorgia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Such a GOOD question Kelly! And sooo hard to answer. So much depends on your season of life, how much space you have, how much time you have, and of course what you want to weave. For “type” I would choose a countermarche. But for actual maker and model... that depends on space and budget 😆

    What is the width of your loom? If your weft is wide (> 40")... will you need a 'flyer' shuttle?

    • @sweetgeorgia
      @sweetgeorgia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yes, this loom is 45” wide. I find I can weave the entire width if I reach... any wider and I would definitely get the flying shuttle. It’s possible to add it to this loom too.
