- I flew a rocket into the annular solar eclipse on October 14, 2023, in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, aiming for 90,000 feet - with a LOT of help. Will we succeed?
Mega thank you to everyone who helped on this project! Watch the credits, they rock.
Check out @xylafoxlin's video for more on the balloon!

Top 3 questions I've gotten, just from chatting with people:
1. Did you need FAA permission to do this?
Yes. Very, very much so. We had a temporary flight restriction (basically, a giant cylinder above us) for the entire morning of the eclipse, which I called in prior to launch and closed promptly after.
2. How did you get on the land?
We drove, and we got BLM permission to perform the launch on the Black Rock desert. Had to get a permit for that too.
3. Why 90,000 feet?
It's the highest I could reasonably go for with the tools and time I had. 100,000 feet requires a Class 3 waiver with the Tripoli Rocket Association, who does most (if not all) launches from Black Rock. This was NOT a Tripoli sanctioned launch, but being a Tripoli member was important to pull this off.
Rocket stats (spoilers!):
Height: 14ft, 8in
Weight: 75lb. 49lb booster, 26lb sustainer.
Motors: N5800, M2150
Max speed: 550 m/s (Mach 1.6)
Max altitude: 850 m (GPS, sustainer) - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
This is one of the most beautiful rocket films ever EVER made. I am so unbelievably proud of you
Freaking awesome - love you dude!
Nice work by Andrew. I am going to regret saying this buuuut the booty be looking kinda thiccck.
Nice lathe. :)
I watched the whole second half in one sitting, and I straight up bawled as you thanked your friends one by one at the end. (The music choice definitely contributed, dude.) What a joy of a film, about a rocket, a designer, a bunch of friends, and the most amazing adventure. Thank you.
I WILL watch this whole thing this week. Can already tell it was a huge amount of great work. Thanks for putting in the effort to get this out there!
Amazing to see how tight and collaborative the rocketry community is :))
I love how everyone, Xyla especially, stepped up and took over when they saw the need
Amazing video! I'm really sorry about the rocket, but I hope it was still rewarding and educational. Either way, thanks for giving us such a detailed look into the journey. It was kind of nostalgic for me, as seeing you drive the checklist brought me back to our Rocket Team days. Looking forward to more of your projects and videos in the future!
It's really been a treat to watch this process unfold. I can't imagine how much time and effort went into making all this happen.
Beautiful art. The teamwork, the emotions, everything.
Well done.
Me: I'll just watch a bit now...
Also me: hey, the credits are rolling.
24:40 I GYAT to watch that rocket launch
Beautiful video Andrew. When I saw the rocket 'wiggle' it reminded me of our 2nd MiniSShot flight. Carbon fiber recovery bay snapped in half and the remaining rocket continued under power for another 25,000' with no electronics...like your's it's still in the desert somewhere. Recovered avionics intact after its 20,000' freefall. Again, great video.
Brilliant people have brilliant friends. Huge tonacity sustained for ages, a great example of expecting setbacks and rolling with the punches, respect.
Rebuild it and fly to 90000 feet! Would love to see that. It was an amazing journey to watch
The journey was wonderfull, the fly high in emotion, well done
Wow this is an amazing video. this is the first time in recent memory i have ever gotten emotional from a youtube video, you did an incredible job. I have been working on a solar eclipse balloon with my friend for the April Solar eclipse, and this video made me even more excited and scared for that project. This looks like such a cool experience, and honestly no matter what happened it still seems like such an incredible life experience. Thank you for this incredible video
Just finished binging all 4 videos in this series, amazing watch.
Wow, what an adventure.
What a spectacular film! The story was so compelling even with a non expected ending. Sometimes the journey makes it all worth while
Living the dream ❤❤❤
Great Job Andrew!
I watched, I felt, I cried, I cheered. I got to follow along from the beginning to the end of a journey that was simply amazing. Thank you for taking me, virtually, along.
Great film. And, I probably dont need to tell you this...but you've got some really good people in your life.
Tremendous 👏👏
Ok, this was a great watch. its 1:15 AM rn imma go sleep, good fuckin job, there is always a next time (or maybe not but most times yes) so cant wait for SAROS v2
Thank you for uploading such a detailed video showing the build process, testing, launch and most importantly the analysis afterwards. This way everyone can learn from the mistakes you made.
Ps: Thanks Xyla for your post about the video❤
Thank you so much for making this. The story is well told, and the project itself is one of the most impressive feats of planning and execution I have ever seen at this scale.
So freaking cool!!!
A film about friends that has a rocket in it. Good people. Nothing like rocketry to keep you humble 🙃
Man, I hope that one day I can become a good engineer like yall
So proud! This video was awesome, and may have kickstarted my journey to L3... :)
What a video, what a journey!
You fly and you learn.
Kudos for the MANY achievements of this launch !
Now, when's the next full eclipse ?
Awesome, Andrew. The journey is the reward. Thanks for sharing this.
Great job! I really enjoyed the whole build process.
Whoa whoa whoa 4:43 OG snowboard connection sticker!
Great adventure! Thanks for sharing!
What a film
What a great video and an awesome achievement. Thank you for sharing it!
A cinematic experience! This was awesome Andrew
❤😭🚀
Awesome job Andrew, you da man. Although I would say next time, just get a long reel of twisted pair wire and string that 2000yds. Then you'll always be certain the link to the launchpad is good.
Can't wait for the next video...
YESSSSS AMAZING
Awesome build team!
Also: Unfold by Porter Robinson at 40:29 ;)
Ok, a youtuber with like 2000ish followers publishing a ~2 hour video, this is either a podcast or a livestream with terrible quality... This is, what i normaly would think, if i saw this.
But as a model rocket enthusiast I REALLY enjoy watching this EXTREMELY well produced and cut masterpiece. Also, from a rocket standpoint this is truely top notch. Failures are temporary, the reward is the project itself, keep up the god work, we need more of this!!!
the nose cone avionics bay turned into a pinata
First time seeing Joe's new lathe on your channel xD
LETS GO
55:39 cycle hit D:
You rock!
Boy the music was soo good i had to stalk your spotify, by any chance you got the playlist? Also loved the video, I think this is my new favorite rocketry video
Yup! All but 3 songs are in here. Rest are in the description. www.epidemicsound.com/playlist/ieihqlf8s8zhqv8hkcbmnct0ch4s1r7a/
@@andrewadams6473 Thanks a lot!!!! love your taste in music haha also have you transitioned from Spotify to Epidemic?
This comment is a shot in the dark but would it be possible to add subtitles to this video. With it being a long video adding subs would make it significantly easier for quite some people to be able to watch and enjoy it fully
Thanks for letting me know! I thought they were automatic. I added the TH-cam auto-captions. Definitely not perfect but they should hopefully help for now :)
