  • This video very roughly covers the build, test, and first flight of TYCHO, the 2-stage rocket I'm building for the annular eclipse in under 3 months. Please ignore the rough edges and if you only have 13 minutes, start from 39:17.
    Also I misspelled Kelly's and Abhi's names, sorry y'all!
    Flight stats:
Apogee: ~5520m (there was a pressure spike)
    Max Speed: 410 m/s (Mach 1.2)
    Sustainer performed nominally!
    Booster RUD on impact
3 ignition attempts, no onboard video :(
    Chapters:
    00:43 Build
06:42 Sustainer Ground Test 1 -- fail, drogue stuck, no main
08:49 Sustainer Ground Test 2 -- fail, no separation, sooty cameras, no main :(
10:30 Sustainer Ground Test 3 -- fail, sabot stuck, sooty cameas, TD hard to pull
12:25 Sustainer Ground Test 4 -- fail, insufficient deploy force, sooty cameras
    15:30 Sustainer Ground Test 5 -- Pass :)
    19:07 Launch Rehearsal
26:15 Stage Test + Booster Ground Test
    28:39 Fixes for flight
    35:33 Booster Ground Test 2
    37:03 Final integration
39:17 Launch prep (start from here if you only have 12 mins)
    41:39 Two biggest risks
    43:53 Arm sustainer
47:52 You Know What Time It Is

I really like the grass in your garden at @8:28. This is how gardens should at least look like.

I am an old man who has failed many times in my life but each time I did I learned something about the subject of my failure, about life, and about myself. Sometimes I could, and did, overcome those failures and sometimes I learned that I could not. Thank you for having the courage - and the confidence - to share not only your successes but also your failures. Keep it up and good luck!

One thing I've learned over the years is to make sure you wrap your parachute its diameter is smaller than your tube body. Nothing sucks more than a wrapped burrito getting stuck because of a tight friction fit.

“A giant compilation of clips,” completely undersells this, what a wild ride.

I'm too young to do High Power yet but I am almost there and I love to watch these videos on youtube. The stuff you're doing sure is a far cry from the motor eject projects that my builds are based off of! I can't wait until im old enough to play around with electronics lol.

First off congrats on the successful 2 stage. Have you considered doing Head End Deployment? It would get rid of the need for the tender decender. Also just curious why you are using more than 2 parachutes? It seems you are increasing the chance of tangled chutes for no reason. The whole recovery system seems far more complicated than it needs to be, increasing the chance of failure.

Dude congrats on igniting two stages at least! Also I know every minute of edited video is at least an hour of work so thanks for sharing the adventure. I’m learning second hand a lot for whenever I want to start a two stage attempt.
Do you know where your launch site will be come eclipse time? I’ll be way out in Dover Foxcroft Maine most likely.
