Poor John, his unrequited love has him spiraling. I like this poem, the conceits are very impactful (Spider turning manna into gall) as well as his use of nature as a tool to express his depression. When i heard you say MANDRAKE i instantly thought "well the Harry Potter fans just leaned in"😅
Donne's unrequited love poems are definitely amongst my favourites. The conceits are always very impactful as you say, and I find the poems stylistically brilliant!
