'Polina's Pages' is on Booktube to talk about literature, and to make new bookworm friends. Hopefully this account can suggest some books that might become your favourite, or spark a discussion on the merits of a particular novel. I also have many study guides for those of you studying literature, from GCSE to A Level to University. Get cozy and I sincerely hope you enjoy these videos:)
Soldier, Sailor by Claire Kilroy. Spoiler Free Review. Women's Prize for Fiction Shortlist 2024.
A spoiler free review of Soldier, Sailor by Claire Kilroy, another book on the Women’s Prize for Fiction Shortlist 2024. This one is a harrowing tale of motherhood and all its difficulties, as a mother constructs an ode, and a love letter to her first son. It’s an ever relevant reminder to appreciate our mothers, and I wish I read this on Mother’s Day. But did I think it was nuanced and literary enough for the shortlist? Watch the video to find out!

Hello! In october I will sit for literature IGCSE, and I have a big doubt. Because of a signicant amount of problems that happened in my school with literature teachers we are far behind on the poem and stories we should have read by now. Would you recommend to skip the ones that were asked last year, since I don´t think that there will be a question about the same poem or story as last year. Thank you very much. Greetings
Hi! I would not really recommend doing that, as there is still a slim chance they might come up. Don't skip them, maybe just put less effort into them? Also, you have some time before October, so I think you can definitely get through a lot of works. Do feel free to DM me if you need some extra support over Instagram, polinas_pages
LOVED THIS my exam is in a week and this was so useful!!
Good luck!!
Thank you so much I’ve watched all of these two times!
Glad it was helpful! Best of luck!
The concept of fire as cleansing is especially intense when considering ones soul. Donne's developing dialog with God is intriguing. In Holy Sonnet 1 he is begging or pleading, here he seems to be demanding a bargain for his soul. Clearly he is becoming more confident in his efforts to communicate with GOD. Or am I wrong?
I think you are absolutely wrong! As the Holy Sonnets progress he gets more and more confident and this definitely comes out in the tone and also in the address he uses. It's truly fascinating to mark the changes in Donne's attitudes through his poetry!
I might be 2 years late but I have a mock test tomorrow so this has been EXTREMELY helpful, God bless u x
Good luck! Never late, glad to help x
Thanks a lot for the great analysis! This has been really helpful. 🥰
Thank you
Hey Poilna , I was searching for analysis of cannonization to makes notes before exam when I stumbled upon your video. sharing it to my friends it was so good !!!!! loved it.

Thank you! It was a prize I won during the winter wonderland festival in Hyde Park, in London last year :)
I have not read this book but I would probably have a similar reaction to your own. Books that are light on plot MUST have engaging characters worth investment. If not the book becomes very "putdownable". Small stories can be great, but if they become an exercise in abstraction they quickly veer into the realm of dullness (in my opinion).😸
So well said! I love the phrase "veer into the realm of dullness," describes it perfectly x
Do u have any suggestions for Edexcel English Lit Paper 3 Poetry 2024?
No guesses unfortunately
I have a littérature exam soon and this helped a lot ❤
John Donn certainly had an interesting arc in his catalog of verse...and I suspect in his personal life as well. "Thou hast made me, and shall thy work decay?" is a fantastic title. Donne's pleadings are actually very clever. It seems he is saying; my body is in decay and I sadly except that is inevitable. Yet, God, since you made me you hold some degree of responsibility for the decay of my soul...."help a guy out God, please?" As you say Polina, this sonnet displays Donn's uncertainty and the emotions touched me. In this work Donn is sad, he is scared but he is struggling hard to be hopeful.
Yes, I absolutely agree that the Holy Sonnets are very touching! They are so deeply personal, yet so clever, I think it is still very like John Donne, just in a different type of way, it shows his maturity.
Your videos are whats saving me,thank you ❤
Hii big fan and love ur page , do u have any written summary of how it feels to be colored me i have an exam tomorrow?😊
Hi! I only have the video I made unfortunately. Best of luck with your exam!

I am confused are you advocating for P.E.E.L format or P.E.E.A.L format? and what do you think about P.E.T.A.L technique aswell, which one should I focus on for effectiveness?
She meant P.E.E.A.L
PEEAL, I tried to say that you should be focusing on the small details too, not just broad details))
@@PolinasPages good tip, btw love ur videos, one more question how can I use the PEEAL format to pick up girls? 🤔
hey, please do On the New Bypass by Jane Commane next,
Glad to see you posting
Ami the one
ahaha yes, and about 5 other people, the pressure was on:)
Hi, I’ve been watching your videos and I must say, it has helped me a lot in understanding these poems, but do you have any advice for someone who can’t finish essays within the allocated time? It’s something I often struggle with and I have my exam tomorrow, so I’m wondering what I should do.
Hi! I'm glad I could help. Best of luck tomorrow! I would say that do your best to be disciplined about it, so if you say I will spend 50 min on one essay, don't spend 60 min, because you still have to write the other essay. Also, this doesn't work for everyone, but you could save time by not rereading. As long as you pay special attention to what you write straight away, you don't need to reread every paragraph you've written. Oh and, write the intro and conclusion last if it's a huge struggle, because you get less marks for it, so best to save time by skipping that if it's a major issue
@@PolinasPages Thanks 🙏 I’ll try and implement it in my exam tomorrow, and I’ll let you know how it goes.
hey!! i have my cie on monday and wanted to ask: when writing our answers for poetry, is it recommended to go about the analysis stanza by stanza (chronologically) and give all explanations in one big paragraph for each stanza, or should I generally talk about a common motif and describe wherever it is brought up in the poem?
you should typically try to organise it by motif and theme, for example if the question is about time, you can present it through structure, imagery, language, etc
@@PolinasPages oh okay thanks
what sort of mark out of 25 would the example essay get?
depends on the teacher, but somewhere in the top bands:)
tysm!
is there any way to get the pdfs of the poem?
Do you mean my notes in pdf? Or the actual poem?
ma gcse lit is in three days. ur analysis really helps. hoping for a*. lit is my struggle.🥴 thanks anyways :)
I didn't like this novella much. I mean its very common "theme"...but again he didn't want to punlish it too
How old are you?
how old do you think I am?)
your poetry videos really saved me this year. i just wish i could enjoy this part of the subject more, exam's tomorrow and honestly, i js wanna get this done w. thanks a lot for your insanely useful analysis tho!
Thanks alot for this, my exam is in a while and this helped alot, specially since im self studying this is a big help, thanks alot ALOT
I'm reading RIGHT NOW, and imma cook
Im just here because I gotta do an assignment and dont wanna read it so thanks lol.
John Donne enjoys his sidesteps into Erotica. Nicely done Polina.
I feel that the poet isn't trying to criticise modern art like Grayson Perry's urn but rather celebrate the free nature of society nowadays compared to the uppity kind of sense in Keats poem. I mean he definitely mocks modern culture in the poem but I get a feeling that hes actually mocking those who think they are better than it. I think the poem's satire reflection of Keats is not only mocking Keats but the "high society culture" Keats praises. I mean isn't it hypocritical for society to mock working class kids for their "lack of culture" while also not providing a society with quality education for them to access it? They keep culture (like the Gricean urn) for the rich to keep it exclusive purposefully , then mock those who aren't well versed in it? That's just my opinion though
I love your perspective! Very interesting take on this. It definitely is hyppocritical to expect society to act differently when we are the reason society is the way it is. I feel like perhaps the poet has mixed feelings on this, which is very reasonable, as there isn't a clearcut answer as to what the right approach is. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Nice explanation ❤
would you ever make one for a levels or is it similar? thank you :)
i think an improvement to the points would be not using language techniques in the P of the PEEL but going by theme ! such as saying “In a streetcar named desire, the main character, Blanche experiences delusions through the form of a memory play to portray her mental state”
yes, that's a good improvement! In fact that's what A Level is more about, but largely it is quite similar. I can definitely try to make a similar video for A Levels:)
@@PolinasPages thank you! Don’t worry tho because this vid is already pretty helpful for me during my revision for a levels rn :)
These videos are so so helpful! thank you so much for your hard work and in-depth analysis x
