Water for Peace: What is Water Diplomacy and What Can it Do?

  • Global water supplies are shared resources. Worldwide, 313 international river basins, shared by 150 countries, cover half the Earth’s land and are home to half its population. Yet most of these waters have no collective mechanisms in place for collaborative management. Around this year’s World Water Day theme of Water for Peace, David Michel, Senior Fellow at the CSIS Project on Water Security and the Global Food and Water Security Program, explains the role of water diplomacy in promoting cooperation and preventing, reducing, or peacefully resolving conflicts over shared water resources.
