404,000 miles on my Civic Si... Switch just acted up. Jiggled the key and got it started and got it home. Best video I've found to replace the switch. Thanks!
Someone stole my car and used the wrong key to my teggy. Now I have to wiggle my key in which is a huge drag to start the car. So I am very thankful for this video.
Glad you were able to recover your car! It's amazing/sad older generation Honda and Acura are still some of the top stolen vehicles. Thanks for sharing your story and glad my video could be of service!
@Karwin Chau ignition switch change you can keep the same key which is why I chose that path for my fix...it's just a bit more difficult than swapping out your ignition whole which does require a new key.
Same, just bought a 94 and it's rigged down to the white part of the ignition, so technically anyone could just have it. I guess I'm lucky the motor is currently blown. Lmao
Awesome Video! Hopefully this solves the problem. We have a 1994 Honda Civic Ex that has been giving us starting issues for over a year. It'll start in the morning, drive my wife to work, after work it won't start and she is stranded!! Replaced, everything but the Ignition switch....fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel injection relay, plug wires, distributor, and ignition coil...and to think....It's just the ignition switch! Even paid to have an Alarm System removed that was hooked up to the Fuel Injection Relay! Worked for a couple days and then....Stranded! Got quoted 300+ to replace this Switch, I think I'll do it myself! Thanks Brother! You Rock! #HooDeeCruuuu!
My 1994 Acura Integra starts and dies almost instantly I believe this my issue I appreciate the video great job ill be fixing it soon with your help Thanks

This same setup should apply to my 1999 CRV (CR-V), exception is CRV ignition in the dash and ur Acura is in the column. Only other IMPORTANT step is to remove the negative battery lead prior to work. I think those two small depinned wires go to radio.
Thanks for the GREAT Video! I replaced the Ignition switch in my wife's 1994 Honda Civic using this as instruction! It was Extremely helpful. The Only place I had a sticking point was in de-pinning the one connector that needed the two wires pulled. The video you did about it, the connector was different than this one. Perhaps a follow up on this kind of connecter would be helpful for people in the future. Thanks again, God Bless You and Yours! #HooDeeCruuuu!
That's great, glad the install went well. And oh yea de-pinning a connector can be tough first few attempts, but after awhile you get the hang of how exactly to position the clip. Thanks for taking the time to share your outcome :)

Helpful video. It is a wonder you were able to get the clear close-ups. What were the symptoms that indicated a defective switch assembly? Did you disconnect the battery before this job? Curious as to where you were able to purchase the part. Found the soundtrack annoying but otherwise great job!
Thanks for the video feedback! Symptoms: car would start and cut off immediately as I stated in the beginning of the video Battery: no disconnect as I was not working directly in line with the charging network i.e. alternator, battery, fuses in direct line, etc. Purchase: online eBay

not sure if you're still here amigo. But how did you de-pin them? Did you literally just push it out? Did you have to like lift up the bottom tab? I'm having extremely difficulty here. I managed to get one out somehow, destroyed another one ( so I need to fix it ) do I just need to use a needle or something to hit a retention clip and then push out? OR do I simply just push out the pin with a flathead??
Hey still here! Yes, sort of push up and in to depin. I'm not the best, the other video in my link that guy explains better I think. It's not easy starting out, but what I also did was buy a pigtail of wires to practice on from a local pepboys (like the ones you get for car radio adapters). Hope that helps!

Mojo (sorry I didn't see your name anywhere), wonderful video. I haven't found any other videos that cover install of the older one piece switch w/ wires. I'll be attempting this on Monday on an 04 Odyssey which uses the same switch. No tips (maybe Tuesday?), but any advice for taping the wiring loom back together? Same for installing the zip tie?
I chose not to tape wire loom as the short route the wires were taking in my steering column had no sharp edges near wire. I did however zip tie at each third length of wire i.e. two zip ties, hope that helps. And yea not much out their in TH-cam anymore for us holding onto older vehicles
Thank you so much for the video. You just made my day! I have an Acura rl 98. Your switch is horizontal mine is vertical but looks to be the same. On the change out. I even recognize the beep sound is the same sound as mine lol. Thank you again Jp
Now I understand that Honda’s make Acura. Would it be the same concept to replace ignition switch in 2001 Acura GSR? Great video, very knowledgeable in cars, Thanks
You got it, and yes similar process for a 2001 gsr. Just a fyi for future work, many parts/processes are interchangeable between 92-00 civics and 94-01 integras as the chassis are similar. Good question and thanks for sharing feedback!
I found it from an amazon seller. There was also sellers on ebay and sites like rock auto that were selling the ignition switch separate from the ignition cylinder. Places like autozone or advance auto parts, if you are in the US, only wanted to sell a complete new assembly which would have changed my key which I didn't want to do
nicely done how do you know if the problem is the ignation switch coz I have problem in my Acura TL I thought the starter and relay I change those already and come out nothing when I start the car there a noise in the ignation switch probably help me let me know if I change that too thanks a lot
For me the sign was that my car would crank, start, then immediately die. I had verified fuel pressure so that lead me to a possible ignition issue. Didnt want to drop couple hundred on all new ignition so decided to change switch first since I had time to diagnose. It's a fairly fast install if you can depin a connector fairly quickly.
I just bought a 95 VTEC Del Sol and the previous owner said he had to replace the “electrical part of the ignition.” He said he bought a new one but it did not have the wires that make the car chime when the key is in and the doors are open. Now after watching your video I feel he probably didn’t transfer the wires you transferred to the new harness... now to see if those wires are still hanging in the dash... ? 🤔 car is starting fine but I want my beep beeps too 😆
Thanks for the feedback! And yea some folks will skip that part of wire transfer. But I'm like you, if I know something is not right it'll bother me until I figure what is the fix haha
Engineered Mojo I found the aftermarket part that the previous owner bought on ebay. The seller states in the description that they do not recommend trying to pin the cables to the new part. I messaged them and asked them why they do not recommend it... they said they’ve sold thousands of these and anyone who tries to pin those cables, breaks it... they said maybe the aftermarket connector is not designed to accept new pins.. he said it would also void the warranty... I guess I am curious where you got your part from? Was it an OEM part from another Honda donor or was it aftermarket? Idk why I care about the beeping so much but I just want all OEM functionality working lol...
@@djmattplay my part was aftermarket as well. I assume the seller says that because many people are inexperienced with depin of wire or reinstall so may be breaking them by doing it wrong or being too aggressive with a depin tool. Hi mojo, my 93 civic cranks but no start. I noticed that the check engine light stays in and the fuel pump doesn’t prime, I replaced the fuel pump main relay fuses and still nothing. Do you think that this ignition switch replacement will fix my issue? Please advise!!
It's worth a try, pretty quick replacement procedure outside of the wiring. Have you confirmed you have fuel pressure and good compression in the cylinders? I'd do a compression test and check fuel pressure before doing the ignition switch replacement. Hope that helps!
Yes I just had the pistons replaced about 3 months ago and the mechanic did compression tests and fuel pressure etc etc.. the car cranks but doesn’t start but the main thing I noticed was I don’t hear the fuel pump priming anymore and the check engine light doesn’t turn off. Weird
I have some more videos on the way about my civic eg. Most of the items are same as the integra given I have a Integra engine in my civic and the civic frame and integra frame are the same virtually. Hope they will be useful for you!
On the lock cylinder thier two sensors that are mounted on it.not the sensor that connects to the White plug but the other one. It has a flat pin that goes in the cylinder. My question is, it wont fully sit in it place until I put the key in into first click over. Is that correct on how to install it.
Possibly, the fuel pump is controlled in combination by the ignition switch and ECU/ECM. Bad switch could not be sending signal, but usually that is an issue when car is actually running since the ignition circuit is providing the power during driving. If your pump isn't priming at start up, I'd first check your fuel pump relay
@MinifigsBricksMoreDenton since I only replaced the ignition swith on the back of the ignition, I was able to use my same key. I was looking for a solution where I could keep my same key and it worked out well
Man, I end replacing starter and ignition coil. Thought it'll run (which it did) but days later it dies. Trying to start and instantly dies. Ignition switch is what I'm aiming for.
Definitely sounds like it could be the switch. It's a pretty cheap part when sold separably from the ignition itself. A lot of the department stores are trying to bundle them and rob us haha! Can't remember if I mentioned in video I got my switch off amazon for under $40. Good luck with install and let me know how it goes if you get the chance!
@@EngineeredMojo others say it sounds like pcm/ecu problem and others say fuel. At this point idk what to do hahaha. My ecu is after market. I have a video on how it acts
Hoping this fixes my 99, it cranks over but wont start. I connected my scan tool but it says that it cannot connect to the vehicle, I wonder if this switch is sending power to the ecu, I've tested all fuses under dash and under the hood. I have this switch coming tomorrow and I'll test the ecu for power and go from there.
@@EngineeredMojo I have fixed the car and so far has been fine since replacing the switch. I will say repinning the wires is a huge pain in the rear... Honda should've just added a quick connect, you have to physically unpin the cables from the one connector and then add them into the new one, it's 2 wires, I ended up mangling the old connector to get them out. I messed up when installing it and cracked the housing a tiny bit but it's still working fine, I didn't have it properly lined up as shown @8:40 on the column, I had to use my key to turn it just a bit for the switch to align properly, it wasn't seated properly and I tried to tighten it which put a small crack in it. I ended up replacing the ECU as well, sorry it was definitely a weird issue for me, and after replacing both parts at first it still wouldn't start but I don't remember what I did but it's working great now. I had already replaced the main relay several years ago just because I knew that it could be a common issue and didn't want to take a chance of getting stranded somewhere.
@@Kista79 that's awesome to hear you were able to fix your vehicle. Some fixes aren't straightforward which can definitely be annoying, but the payoff of a cheaper fix and car running is a nice payoff. De-pinning is one of my least favorite activities. I keep telling myself I will buy a practice harness just to get good at depin haha. Keep enjoying your car and appreciate you coming back to provide the update 😀
I replaced the ECU because before with my scantool it showed that it couldn't connect to the system which typically means an issue with the unit itself, mine is an HX so they are even harder to find. I know the ECU provides power to the fuel pump, when I had issues before it wouldn't run when you turned the key so maybe that was my issue, at least replacing the switch is something I shouldn't have to worry about doing again. The worst thing about these cars is now the age and finding new parts is getting harder to find and I wouldn't think anyone would be willing to pay for a brand new ECU if you could even find one that is. When it failed it was totally odd, I was leaving from work and just started the car, it was running for a few and I put it in reverse to back out and it just died on me. I've also replaced those rubber pieces on the pedals but still once the car is running they don't come into play anymore at least not for the clutch pedal, if the one on the brake pedal fails it leaves your brake lights on and will kill the battery.
@@Kista79 that's the truth on parts becoming harder to find. It used to be 10 to 15 years ago finding parts for a 92-00 Honda was easy and also relatively cheap. Hoping these cars hold nostalgic value going forward so manufacturers still create parts whether OEM or OE
@@EngineeredMojo yea, every time I look it’s always sold out, or I need to buy the whole thing, not just the wire, and eBay has been selling them for 70$ or more at times. So I’ll keep looking. Thanks.
i had a issue where the car would die, i replaced the switch and the problem got fixed, but now whenever i turn the car off and try to take the key out i can’t. i can only take it out when i pop the battery. any ideas??
Car is doing the same thing, bought brand new coil today have good module even got a new housing cap rotor 2 weeks ago had call out of wrk today gonna replace this tomorrow even put a stock computer on nd still shuts off randomly
I can no longer remember, but I am 95% sure they are for accessories (heater blower possibly etc.). I need to dig out my factory service manual, when I get back to my home in a few days after the Holidays I'll find out!
I just tried to do this on my 2000 Honda Civic but I couldnt for the life of me de-pin the wires. Accidentally ripped two of the wires and now I need to go back to where my car broke down with a crimping kit and try again.
De-pinning can be a pain for sure. I always play some calm music in the background to keep my nerves in check. With practice you'll get the hang of it. What I ended up doing to get better was grab a harness from the junkyard and practiced depin on that.
I accidentally ruined one of the tiny blue wires trying to get them out of the housing... And I can't find that extra 3rs little wire anywhere. Nor do I know wut it's called...
My solution to that would be to go to a junk yard to find that similar wire clip end from a Honda/Acura. I'd snip off the male portion and about 3" of extra wire. Or an easier option is to buy a cheap new Honda wire sub harness online (virtually any wire pin harness for your generation Honda as they are all the same from what I've seen), de-pin, and take that pin for your wire. You can either solder with new male metal clip on your wire or crimp entire new piece in place on your original wire. I've had to do similar on other wires on my actual engine harness. It's not bad to fix
@@EngineeredMojo Thanks for the reply sir! I ended up just taking the ignition switch back and having the Auto part store order me in the whole ignition/key cylinder assembly..
It was $23 shipped from Amazon, but that was ignition switch only. Many online vendors will try to sell you entire ignition assembly which is around $200. Don't buy that if you don't need it

No problem, hope it was helpful! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and feedback
nice camera work .. thanks !!
Thanks for watching! And thanks for the camera work shout out, work in progress haha
Weird
I would try the main relay
Great video, dude. Can you make more, hopefully about acura integras. Thanks.
I have some more videos on the way about my civic eg. Most of the items are same as the integra given I have a Integra engine in my civic and the civic frame and integra frame are the same virtually. Hope they will be useful for you!
Can you please link where you purchased the ignition switch from?
Hope this helps:

On the lock cylinder thier two sensors that are mounted on it.not the sensor that connects to the White plug but the other one. It has a flat pin that goes in the cylinder. My question is, it wont fully sit in it place until I put the key in into first click over. Is that correct on how to install it.
Thanks for this video, because l'm having a starting issue so if it turns out to be my ignition l'm ready thanks to you.and l am subscribing..
Glad this video proved helpful and hope your fix goes smoothly. Thanks for taking the time to comment and sub!
Would a bad ignition switch cause your fuel pump to have priming issues?
Possibly, the fuel pump is controlled in combination by the ignition switch and ECU/ECM. Bad switch could not be sending signal, but usually that is an issue when car is actually running since the ignition circuit is providing the power during driving. If your pump isn't priming at start up, I'd first check your fuel pump relay
Very good work
Thanks for the feedback!
Great vid man .
Awesome, glad to hear and thanks for the feedback!
Did you have to replace the key or did you use the old key?
@MinifigsBricksMoreDenton since I only replaced the ignition swith on the back of the ignition, I was able to use my same key. I was looking for a solution where I could keep my same key and it worked out well
@@EngineeredMojo I think my actual cylinder is bad. So I need to replace it as well. Because I can’t even get my key to turn
Is this the same process for the automatic transmission?
I haven't done this fix on an automatic, but it should be a similar process.
Have you found out?
Hoping this fixes my 99, it cranks over but wont start. I connected my scan tool but it says that it cannot connect to the vehicle, I wonder if this switch is sending power to the ecu, I've tested all fuses under dash and under the hood. I have this switch coming tomorrow and I'll test the ecu for power and go from there.
Was the ignition switch the issue in the end?
Hoping these cars hold nostalgic value going forward so manufacturers still create parts whether OEM or OE
good job
Appreciate the feedback on the video!
Where did you buy the switch?
I bought the switch off Amazon, I was really surprised it was up there. Also available on ebay I have seen
@@EngineeredMojo yea, every time I look it’s always sold out, or I need to buy the whole thing, not just the wire, and eBay has been selling them for 70$ or more at times. So I’ll keep looking. Thanks.
I'm trying this. If this works i don't know what I'll do. It's been a headache for the past 6 months
Keep me posted on the outcome and good luck!!
Thanks man
No problem, hope it proves helpful for you
i had a issue where the car would die, i replaced the switch and the problem got fixed, but now whenever i turn the car off and try to take the key out i can’t. i can only take it out when i pop the battery. any ideas??
Car is doing the same thing, bought brand new coil today have good module even got a new housing cap rotor 2 weeks ago had call out of wrk today gonna replace this tomorrow even put a stock computer on nd still shuts off randomly
You've had some tough luck finding the cause of your car issues, hopefully this fix will be the solution!
@@EngineeredMojo yea me to hoping this is it gonna buy one in the morning thanks for making this video tho
@@EngineeredMojo no luck problem is still there even changed the fuel pump and still shuts off kinda lost right now
@@mauricehankins2469 ahh tough luck, any check engine codes?
What are those two little wires for?
I can no longer remember, but I am 95% sure they are for accessories (heater blower possibly etc.). I need to dig out my factory service manual, when I get back to my home in a few days after the Holidays I'll find out!
I can’t get my pins out please help
It'll take a few tries for sure, keep at it and have patience for sure you'll get it! Try watching the video I put in the description as well
Welcome to GTA 101
I just tried to do this on my 2000 Honda Civic but I couldnt for the life of me de-pin the wires. Accidentally ripped two of the wires and now I need to go back to where my car broke down with a crimping kit and try again.
De-pinning can be a pain for sure. I always play some calm music in the background to keep my nerves in check. With practice you'll get the hang of it. What I ended up doing to get better was grab a harness from the junkyard and practiced depin on that.
@@EngineeredMojo I may need to use thinner screw driver now that I think about it.
🙏 thank you
No problem, hope the video was useful!
9:17 where come from the small wires?
@@EngineeredMojo was only like $20 more anyway.
@@billblount7854 nice, not a significant price difference and less hassles with the wires. Glad it worked out!
@@EngineeredMojo Thanks good informative video man!
How much cost the ignition starter?
It was $23 shipped from Amazon, but that was ignition switch only. Many online vendors will try to sell you entire ignition assembly which is around $200. Don't buy that if you don't need it
Send me a link ,im from moldova ,and i dont know where to buy...

Hey bro what if you have an aftermarket alarm system and they spliced into the ignition switch harness?? Do i have to undo the splice and re do it?
I would think you could tap into the splice, I haven't run across that personally. What did you end up doing?
@EngineeredMojo i had to cut the wires coming from the aftermarket alarm and splice them into the new ignition harness i think they did that for the remote start to work.
