The crane doesn't lift the reactor. For the final position a track is laid down from the trailer to the pads. The hydraulic jacks lift the reactor at four points you can see the jacking points on the sides with the red and white tape around them. After the trailer is removed, more track is laid down underneath along with the sleds and the jacks lower the reactor onto the sleds. It is then pushed along the track to its final position, where the jacks then lift it again and all the track is removed so the reactor can be lowered down onto the concrete pads. Took us about 3 days to move a 350T generator from lorry to final position. Moving along the tracks usually takes 1 to 2 hours, the rest of the time is the set up and positioning of the tracks and jacks.
The problem with flying directly over open air switchgear is that drone falling could come down and breach the safety zone around an insulator. This would be very dangerous for anyone in the switchyard at the time, along with the the disruption to national electricity supply. That is the main reason they don't want you flying around the yard whilst they are in there.
Drone assist is not the law and is not endorsed by the CAA. It is always the responsibility of the drone pilot to ensure safety. Under Schedule 9 of the Air Traffic Management and Unmanned Aircraft Act 2021 the Police do have the power to check that the Operator ID is legitimate. At the moment for a sub 250g drone they only have the power to obtain the name of UAS Operator and not the remote pilot, although there is a catch all of 'any further information the constable considers reasonable'. Nothing in Schedule 9 requires an offence to be committed or suspicion of one, that is Schedule 8.

      @@Ubique2927 Yes, Drone Assist along with other Apps and manufacturer's software is listed on the CAA website. However, to quote the paragraphs on the CAA website directly above that list;
'As a regulator, the CAA supports any measure to improve the safe use of drones but does not endorse individual products.
The CAA has not checked or approved the apps listed here. Full responsibility for safe operation remains with the person operating the drone. It is up to them to assure themselves of the accuracy of the data and comply with all UK drone rules and regulations.'
So when a drone pilot states that the likes of Drone Assist gives them the legal right to fly over an area because it shows there is no exclusion zone, they are mistaken. Drone assist can form part of a risk assessment to determine if a flight path is safe and legal, but there can be other factors that may make the flight unsafe and hence illegal.
National Grid, the owner and operator of 400 kV and 275 kV substations will have a documented risk assessment for carrying out flight over and around their substations and infrastructure, by both themselves and members of public. They have come to the conclusion that such a flight will be an unacceptable safety and business risk to them. They can and do have mitigating factors in place to allow their own engineers to fly drones, but not for the public. Given the fact that there were engineers working within the substation at the time, that would likely compound the severity of the outcome by introducing the potential for injury to persons.
They have therefore placed signage around, easily within view to prohibit drone flights directly above their substations. If it ever came down to a decision in a court of law, it is likely that a risk assessment carried out by a specialist engineer would overrule the lack of an exclusion zone in a piece of software relied upon by a member of the public.

Cannot understand all the hassle, it is a "Shunt Reactor" NOT a Nuclear Reactor, basically an electric/power conditioner that soothes, adjusts and compensates for long pylon runs etc.

    Interesting video.
I understand the original M20 motorway bridge over the River Medway was constructed to above normal motorway specs to allow the reactors for Dungeness Nuclear Power Station to be transported there.
This bridge was also critical in the cold war for transporting British and American tanks to Dover and the continent if the 3rd World War had started in Germany. It was certainly on the Soviet bomber target list.
There was a Thunderbirds episode based here when the bridge was converted into the Allington Suspension Bridge and a space rocket fell into the river when the bridge collapsed. Meanwhile FAB1 shot up the nearby Forstall Road Industrial Estate to create a diversion.

All I have to say is drone flying requires common sense and understanding that it is a very wildy different method of surveillance and technology. Just because an app says an area isn't prohibited doesn't mean that it isn't. If a site has a sign saying no drone zone then you would reasonably prevent flying into the perimeter. Remember, it isn't just about safety, it is also about privacy and property owner's rights. If someone doesn't want you flying over their propery then you adhere to that. Especially when someone is trying to do their job, don't interrupt them and don't make their job harder than it needs to be.

"Gapped Core is generally used in shunt reactor - constructed from Cold Rolled Grain Oriented Silicon Steel sheet to reduce hysteresis losses. The sheets are laminated to reduce eddy current losses. Gaps are intentionally provided in the construction by placing spacers of high modulus of electricity between the packets of laminations. Normally the gaps are maintained radially. The laminations are placed in each packet in longitudinal directions. Normally, 5 limb 3 phase structure of core is used. It is shell type construction. The yokes and side limbs are not gapped but the three inner limbs for individual phase is constructed with radial gaps as shown. There is nothing special about winding of a reactor. This is mainly made of copper conductors. The conductors are paper insulated. Insulated spacers are provided between turns to maintain the path for oil circulation. This arrangement helps for efficient cooling of the winding. Normally a shunt reactor deals with low current that is why ONAN (Oil Natural Air Natural) cooling is sufficient for shunt reactor even for extra high voltage ratings. The radiator bank is connected with main tank to facilitate faster cooling."
    I understand all the words,,,,

Bit confused why a 'reactor' would be delivered to a substation, I can absolutely see a large transformer or capacitor being delivered to a substation, but it makes no sense that a reactor would be delivered to a substation. A substation is basically a switch, it takes the 275/132kv and splits/drops it down to something a bit more manageable by the smaller substations that power your homes. Reactors produce energy, substations only switch energy. That being said, you did get your drone pretty close to those high voltage lines and if I worked at this substation I would be wary too if you got that close.

That weight limit isn’t a weight limit on the bridge… it says except for access. There’s every chance that the bridge can take the weight ! IF IT WAS FOR THE BRIDGE it would say 7.5 ton MGW. It would also say “WEEK BRIDGE 7.5t MGW” but that one says “7.5t EXCEPT FOR ACCESS”. That doesn’t mean the infrastructure carnt handle it it just says you are not to do it without good reason. A bridge/tunnel height sign dose not necessarily display the hight of the bridge/tunnel but the restriction placed upto vehicles using that bridge/tunnel.

38:15 Point about the road through a motorway service station. Its not a public road. It's a private road. But it can come under road traffic offences because driving a car over it means the car is going from A to Z. The same as a petrol forecourt - you can drive straight through. So when it comes to stopping a car in such situations you are not parked, even if you turn off the engine and get out of the car as you are still on your journey.
In a petrol forecourt the stop is short. In a motorway service station, it can be just as short if popping to the loo, but if you're stopping for a meal, then you could be there for an hour or so. In the first case you are not parked. In the second instance you are parked. But the police can't tell just from the car parking up. Nor can they find out. So they have to assume the car is parked unless they have evidence otherwise.
So police can stop and get ID under section 164 of the RTA as you drive to the car park in a service or petrol station. But they can't once you've parked for a meal. But such a nuance of the law is above all constable's heads. And many people. So the police will abuse such a point in law to get their own way. And 99.999% of the time they get away with it.
