"They performed almost exclusively at the Fremont town hall and at a local nursing home, beginning in 1968 and ending in 1973. Many people in Fremont thought the band stank. Austin Wiggin did not. He believed his girls were going to be big stars, and in 1969 he took most of his savings and paid to record an album of their music."

The band regularly played dances at the Fremont Town Hall every Saturday night for several years starting in 1968, and that was the most consistent exposure the world had to the band.
"There was not much else going on in Fremont for entertainment, so it gave them something to do, to get out, and it gave their parents a break, they would just drop them off," she said. "It was fun watching the kids having fun dancing."
The band performed a mix of originals with covers of Marie Osmond, Herman's Hermits and others.
"The kids liked to dance fast and they liked polkas," said Dot. "They didn't really do polkas, but they probably thought it was polkas. We did the `Wheelbarrow Polka' and one of Johnny Cash's and did it fast so they could dance to it."

It’s so crazy footage of them from this era even exists. They weren’t known and someone had to actually shoot this on film and said film had to be preserved for long enough for someone to digitize this copy we’re watching.

their dad wanted his daughters to be a rock star but they weren't interested in it, so they disbanded soon after dad's death, but in this footage they seem to be enjoying their stage. it makes me happy.
Their dad wanted this because his own mother read his palm when he was younger, and predicted that he would marry a woman with strawberry blonde hair, have daughters, and that those daughters would start a band, and he was determined to make this prediction come true. No joke.

Interesting to hear them do a cover of "Gimme dat ding", which shows they can perform reasonably together. This makes Philosophy of the World a work of art, rhythmically, musically and lyrically.
Just starting to listen to current band members explain the process of learning the songs and this tracks. It seems like out of tune and out of time was an intentional decision of some sort??? They had to know it didnt read like a musical decision to normies but they might be geniuses
Interesting that people are dancing. Seems it would be difficult. Also noticed that dancing continued on when there was no music between songs
It is obvious the audio and video were sliced together. I doubt if the audio is live.
@@vinylrichie007 It's not live, just "Gimme Dat Ding" is but even that one is the same take from the "Shaggs' Own Thing" album so probably not from this performance. Those old 8mm cameras only recorded the video.
The Shaggs! The myth, the legend! The only band that comes close is the Rutles.
The story behind the Shaggs is so sad, they endured horrible abuse from their father who forced them to play in this band, kept them out of school and didn't allow them to socialize or live normal lives.

What a wonderful time to be a kid. I wish I could go back in time and experience the late 60s/early 70s as a kid
I've heard some awful stories from that era from many people. My grandparents were essentially abusive drunks but it was okay for the time because no one really cared about kids. The past wasn't better than today, it may have been more civil but that's because people were ignoring abuse and oppression much more.

When sounds phylosophy of the World is the video audio or is the song put on the video?
This video uploaded to the Internet Archive appears to be a DVD with some audio from the actual performance, while some sections have music from Shagg's Own Thing and Philosophy of the World.
I'm not sure if any uncut footage with the complete audio from the concert is online anywhere.
@@fleurpvnk108 It was recorded on an 8 or 16mm film camera, probably a cheapo and those didn't record the audio. "Gimme Dat Ding" is also from the "Shaggs' Own Thing".

Unfortunately they didn't :( Their father forced them due to a strange "prediction" made by his mother before they were even born that they would form a famous band and so he set to trying to make it happen regardless of what any of them wanted
