Chris Bangle REVOLUTIONIZED BMW Styling (Full Documentary)

  • Chris Bangle is one of the most important figures in BMW's history. After Claus Luthe's departure in 1990, the BMW styling department found itself in a difficult spot. Design was at the very bottom of the totem pole, with engineering and finance controlling the bulk of vehicle development. BMW hired Chris Bangle in 1992 and his impact was felt pretty much immediately. He presided over the E65 7-Series, E85 Z4, and E90 3-Series. For better or for worse, Chris Bangle gave BMW styling a much-needed shot in the arm.

I've never been a fan of the "Bangle angles" however, I forgive him after seeing the latest crop of random angles thrown at sheet metal and plastic.
The Chinese influence inflicted on us today has lifted Mr Bangle to God like status.
My son convinced me not to sell my F11 Alpina D5 because "The only BMW worth buying these days is an E28 like your old one" this speaks volumes as he's only eighteen which highlights the sober design language old men like me enjoyed is still recognised as crisp, fresh and aged well, unlike myself!
A great documentary which I only found after typing in Barchetta as I have fond the memories of hurtling around Oxfordshire in my Fiat Barchetta! So it was good to learn Mr B was at Fiat at the time.

I believe, it is always matter of personal taste if we like car or not. Back last year, when I looked for a "new" car and first time cast an eye at E92, I knew immediately. This is the car! and I have it, enjoying driving it and the way it looks. I have never was a fan of the BMW brand, or any brand before. So I can't be accused of blind love of the badge, but I always know what I like with full conviction. We also can't be zealots who always follow one/old way. We need changes and creative ferment or we would never left caves. Ps. Episodes about designers are really cool, and I appreciate the insight into their work. Muy bien! Ps2. I like the content but presenting it perhaps could be improved. In my opinion stock unrelated repeating pics/videos don't contribute well to the quality of your fantastic work.

Thanks for watching. I primarily relied on three sources to create this video. The first was “Chris Bangle, BMW Global Design (Car Men, Vol. 8).” By Robert Cumberford. This was written mere months before the controversial E65 debuted in Frankfurt, so it was interesting to see how Bangle was perceived before it was shown to the public. I also referenced select chapters from “Driven: Inside BMW, The Most Admired Car Company in the World” by David Kiley and “BMW Z4: Design, Development and Production” by David Lightfoot.
As for the name of the channel, I was unaware of its true meaning. I saw it attached to a few cars (as well as a Rush song) and thought it was fair game. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

IMO the e38 (or even e36) was peak BMW. The front end on that thing is just unrivalled, rear can be called a meh. But overall proportions and clean styling, just commands respect. G30 is also good, well balanced between the front and rear in terms of attractiveness. Z series is underwhelming, can't look beyond it's ridiculous proportions
Perhaps I will be a minority, but Mr. Bangle's ideology does not speak to me at all. Lacks the aggression and authority that one expects out of a BMW

The E65 from the front evokes sadness, even pitifulness somehow, as if someone who worked and worked for a promotion and had a proven track record to support their promotion, but at the end of the ride, they get canned due to company going under. Looking at the car in both real life and in the picture as shown in 54:17, it is a pig in a wig. I still remain firm in my position that the facelifted version should have been the launch version.
At least for that person, the silver lining is that they now work at Mercedes.
But then again, I'm being paid to engineer and solve electrical engineering issues, not design cars.

Maybe because it's the BMW's I was exposed to as a childhood car enthusiast, but the Bangle era of BMW was peak BMW on my opinion. The Z8 (shout-out to Henrik Fisker), E65, E60/E61, E63/E64, E90/91/92/93, E83, E85/E86 all pushed the limits of automotive artistic expression.

I'd take a wild guess and say that the "Malibu exile" involved coke... Loads of it 😆.
X-concept was a mess. I was at a loss for words when I first saw it and not in a good way. Even its sober reincarnation as Z4 remained weird until Adrian van Hooydonk fixed it.
Overall, you can talk as long as you want about design language and engineering limitatios, it doesn't make Bangle's cars look less awkward and sad. Out of all his "experiments", I can only name one exception: 3 Series E46. Yea, I'm just a guy from comment section, but, in my opinion, that car was the highpoint of BMW design.
You could say that these bad experiments were necessary to loosen up the uptight German management, that was stifling creativity, if it wasn't for the brand taking a nose-dive into dementia and eventually losing their whole identity chasing after most tacky and tasteless Chinese customers

I just realised that I've never watched the E65's so long before taking my eyes away for desperation. That really was atrocious. At least the Lci saved it, made it acceptable and in some ways very attractive. Still I don't disrespect Bangle's work. Sure he stepped onto some shits sometimes but it would be weird to imagine BMW without his passage. Certainly deserves more respect than today's BMW designers. Plus, I grew up in the early 00s watching 2005 and 2006 BMW showroom videos everyday after coming back from kindergarten, probably that helped a lot.

The question is, did it NEED to be revolutionised? When you look at the overall direction BMW design has gone in, and some of the aesthetic abortions BMW has produced since Bangle's tenure, you have to wonder. Everyone refers to the beautiful BMW's of the preceding decades as the "Golden Age" of BMW design for a reason, and their design philosophy back then was evolutionary, not revolutionary. Some of Bangle's designs were acceptable, but his successor Hooydonk appears to be designing cars for nothing but shock value. He should be imprisoned for the gargantuan gaping-mouth grilles on the latest generations of BMW's. Truly awful design.
