Susan, you taught me to ride a bike after two lessons. Then you called me asking why I missed the third one and I already bought my bike at this point and was riding on my own with my husband. You cannot imagine how life changing your school was for me! You provide very safe and confident environment and as an adult it feels awkward not knowing how to ride a bike. I did not want to do it in front of my neighbors or under my husband's guidance. I do not have good memories as a teenager trying to learn to ride a bike while visiting my aunt and cousins. I could not learn and they gave up on me. I thought something is wrong with me that I could not learn. I did not want to experience it as an adult again. It is silly but I think scheduling the lessons with you is the best thing I've done for myself as an adult. I was happier when I learned riding bike than when I graduated medical school. I'm still very proud of myself for making it happen. I taught my children how to bike soon after that using your technique. They were three years old. And now it is our tradition and big fun to take bike tours in every big town or city we go to as a family. It is truly the best way to explore the new city and you get a local taste of it. We did it in Everglades, Savannah, Key West, London, Amsterdam, Paris. I already have trips lined up in Copenhagen, Oslo and Stocholm! I am very grateful for opening the whole new world for me! ❤
I learnt to ride today just 2 weeks after I first watched this video. I was struggling with balance for quite a while - I am 50 - and this video helped me a lot with the balance and pedaling techniques. I practiced each step a lot before moving onto the next. I am so happy today. Thank you. Your video is so awesome. I will continue to watch it until I am confident and comfortable and safe.
I'm a woman, at 42 I started learning to ride a bike. I am so happy to know that all the mistakes (are they mistakes?) I have been making and the struggle to balance are normal course of learning process. It feels so delightful to see you teach adults. My trainer has been scolding, nagging, bickering at me, for not able to balance or keep wobbling. (yes, it happens with me!). Day 1 - i got a wrong bike, only my toenails were touching the ground. Day 2 I was almost sitting on the floor. Day 3 my left leg was not able to reach the left peddle. Day 4 I searched the internet and found what should be height of the saddle and asked my trainer to adjust the seat height. Then I was able to reach the peddle properly, and then I realized that I have to learn on my own. I practice whatever I can in that 1 hour class, (today is day 5) but he keeps constantly speaking in my ear, I'm wrong, I'm wrong, I'm making so many mistakes. I can't handle the bike, I can't keep the handle straight, etc. etc. I was so annoyed that I almost thought to give up. I wish I could come to US to learn bike from you. (Alas! I'm from different country). Sending love to you and all your students!
I have been riding bikes since I can remember. Seeing adults learning to ride bikes for the first time is a joy. The work you do is really helping people (and their communities). You are never to old to start riding. Riding bikes is convenient, healthy, good for the climate, affordable and most importantly SO MUCH FUN. Everytime I get on the saddle I just feel this thrill. I feel my legs and how they put power on the road, the thrill of speed wich comes right out of oneself is just the best feeling in the world. There's nothing more liberating. My highest respect and kind regards from Hamburg, Germany.
This video changed my life. I followed every step and whoa I was biking in two hours. I’m a mom of one and I’m so happy I can go biking with her now. Thank you so very much Susan!!
Thank you so much for your videos. My husband and I, now in our 60’s, have just started riding bikes after about 30 years. He picked it up right away with no problems, but I have found that I’m going to have to relearn it. I’m very wobbly and scared of falling so this has been a great help to me. Thank you again for your wonderful videos as they have given me hope that I might be able to start riding again.
I have to say this is the most comprehensive and informative video on TH-cam teaching beginners how to ride a bicycle. I am in my 60's, I spent two 1 hours self learning sessions over last weekend and have managed to learn to cycle for a short distance. I still have a lot to learn and then I have found your video, your instruction is so logically laid out in steps and it makes a lot of sense to me. Now I have a great plan to follow on what to look out for and what to learn next. Thank you very much for creating such a great video.
Susan this is beautiful! Bless your heart for giving people hope and aspiration. My friend gave me a bike and I am very nervous to learn how to ride. But after seeing this video I will give it a try, I an 30 yrs old and have alot to learn. Thank you. God bless
Greetings from Norway. Nice to see more people learning to bike. I learned biking at the age of 7-8 partly by myself. Using a teens sized bike as a balance bike with the seat set very low. My son was about 4-5, my grandson fixed his balance bike at 2 yrs and had pedals at 2,5 yrs. These days too many people are using electric scooters. Let’s hope that manyal bikes are never forgotten!
For all the things we have in SE Florida, we have zero biking schools. This is considering we have a ton cyclists (recreation or sole mode of transportation). At 45 years old, I just learnt how to ride. I have a long way to go, but this video helps tremendously. My 10 yr old son learned to ride in October. I taught him (the irony, right?) and he got over his fear and rides like a boss. He was overjoyed that I wanted to learn and soon we'll be riding together finally.
i have seen other videos on people teaching others how to ride a bike but you take better care of your students. you give them knee pads and a bike without a top tube. you are a great teacher!
Hello, I learned to ride a bike only two months ago 😊 and I am very happy even though I am 42 years old. I watched a lot of videos, this video gave me a lot of information, we don't have such schools to provide the necessary information, but my husband helped by supporting me 😊. Thank you very much for this video.
This is a very informative and encouraging video for beginner bikers. I learnt Cycling in April and fell thrice. Once I crashed into the wall going downslope. I never gave up and I’m still learning. I’m really happy to chance upon your video. Thanks so much and stay safe!
Im learning to ride a bike at 22 with the pedals on, after a few days im starting to see progress because i can push off and keep the bike going for a few seconds before it leans to the side. The pedals keep scraping my legs though
I wish we have more of this adult bicycle classes in Los Angeles. I attended one in Santa Monica but the instructors mostly concentrated on the adults who learned quickly rather than treating every participant in the class the same way. So if you're struggling, you will have to learn in your own.
@Glenda Marie: Bicycle is like a mythical creature because it's actually unknown how people ride a bicycle. If you can't ride a bike I would recommend tricycle as they are very luxurious. I personally ride a smaller ebike with a tall seat and it's actually not hard to cruise up hill as long as it's not raining or snowing.
That's really too bad. Come to Boston! We pay attention to all our students, especially the ones who are struggling. Everyone who makes the trip to Boston, one time flying in from Brazil, is happy that they came. It's a fun city, plus you'll learn how to ride, for sure. Write me; I sometimes don't see these comments. SusanBMcL@gmail.com
Thanks so much for your video. I used ride in my 20’d and thirties. Turned 70 and bought bike for retirement and had so many problems getting back to it. This will help so much!
Watching these videos is amazing for me, I learned how to ride a bike when I was 4, so about 25 years ago and it seems so natural, it's hard to comprehend how a person can't keep their balance on such a simple vehicle. But regardless of age it comes with great satisfaction!
i learned a lot from this video tutorial. It really fills in a lot of blanks and removes main uncertainties regarding starting, turning while maintaining balance. very effective instructions. thanks a lot.
thank you Susan!!! i wish i could learn at your school! i'm 31 and learning to ride for the first time now. these tips and this information is invaluable. thank you for serving your community so well!
This is a wonderful video. I have been researching car dependency and cycling/walking activism in the last year and finding ways to make a difference in my town. I am going to teach some college friends to ride this weekend, and maybe I will see if I can do something similar at home this summer!
This is wonderful! It is obvious a lot of effort was made putting it together. It made learning to ride as an adult seem accesible, step by step. I just got myself a bike, wish me luck--and thank you! 🤞
Thank you for this, Susan! Your video is the MOST encouraging and the MOST informational video I have ever watched about learning to ride a bike for beginners. I am still currently learning to get the feel of my bike, and I am hoping to be able to ride across cities 🥰
Hi Susan! I am currently learning how to ride a bike 🚲 I’m almost 28 and always been a bit afraid. Your video really helped me and my partner (the teacher). Thank you so much! A hug from Argentina 🇦🇷 ♥️
Wonderful video. Well done. I’m 73. Got my first bike. Learning to ride in the park, zigzagging, slamming on brake and almost flying over. My problem now is going up a slight hill. More a gentle incline. I have 6 gears. I’m in gear 6. I just can’t make it up the smell tiny rise. What can I do? I can not stand on pedal. I can only sit on the bike. How do I make it up the slope. Can’t call it a hill just path goes to higher ground
Hi Sylvia the problem with the hill is you are in a high gear gear 6 is for riding on n the straight try 2 or 1 shift down to the low gears a little before you get the hill an you will get up with ease the low gears are for climbing then when you get past on straight level again shift back to 6 you will be amazed how easy it will be to get up hills then bycicles are very seriously sifisticated machines
thank you for your teaching. its been really hard for me. im a first time cyclinst, but im really heavy (150kg). i bought a bike, and im trying to learn little by little. my butt hurts so much though. im still learning to balance the bike.
pro tip: there is special "butt creme" (chamois) wich athlete bikers use for tours. Also check if your saddles height is correctly adjusted or maybe go for a different saddle. If you ride a thin sport saddle that might be the problem.
Thank you Susan. your dedication and inspiration is truly inspiring and is one of the main reasons i was able to learn biking and am nearing 50 . I have repeatedly watched your videos during the process of learning at our local adult bike community and it has helped me to follow the basics . Thanks to you , Today - i was able to bike with my daughter for first time - who was giving me tasks and tips while biking .
I forgot to add that we have just purchased ebikes, pedal assist only. Would it be advisable for me to relearn with the pedal assist off until I get more comfortable and less wobbly? I tried using it at first and it seemed like a bit too much to handle, even at the lowest level of assistance.
Hi Linda try a gel seat I have just put 1 on my mountain bike there are so conftable an there are dead cheap mine was only £13 off Amazon I used to feel uncomfortable I love it now
Im 61 yrs old , Im Looking Forward to trying to Ride A Bicycle Again , A E-Bike where If You Get Tired You Can Make It Back In Your Own , I Really Love The Lady Teaching Cause I Know I For Got Alot , Please Wish Me Luck Everyone 🎈🐒🎈

Yeah, I taught myself at age 5, but I busted my lip trying to ride with no hands and haven't attempted since.
22:50 I recommend to always use gloves (and helmet) when you bike! Because your hands are going to (hopefully) take the first hit if you fall.

Good to learn balancing with pedalless bike at first. Low seat and "rowing" with both feet in unison at the same time.
Thank you for posting this video this is gonna help me out so much to understand how kick off on a bycicle and also how to ride safely on the road

Yes, I think it's probably good to start riding without the assist feature.

This is very helpful! Thank you so much Ms.Susan!
Where is that place ?
Hi I am from Liverpool, your video is great. But how do you stop it hurting underneath, I am 72, find it very unconfotabe.
Look into different seats and or padded bike shorts.
Padded bike shorts are much more comfortable than padded seats.
