Ok, tell me didn’t melt with Miku’s soft vocal replies in the live version… so good.
Just to point out, as 12:43 you can see Miku tuning a string on her guitar. Just something to remember when some bonehead tries to claim she's not really playing.
And she does it _while singing,_ because she's badass like that.
The connection between Saiki and MISA was because both were barefoot during this song. In the previous song (Freedom), Saiki took her shoes off and went into the crowd (Princess only section) and was carried around while singing. She could not get back on stage in time to finish the song and Miku had to solo her parts.
Actually she lost her shoes in the crowd when she was kidnapped by the fans (in the reserved women section of the club - guess the female fans love Saiki too...) but the shoes were returned to the stage afterwards.....

My brother sent me this video along with thrill the month that Real Existence came out. I loved this song from the start. But I was so depressed, because it only had 455 views, I thought America has really gone to hell if that's all the views it gets. Thrill only had a little over 1000 views. So glad I was wrong

Real Existence, from de album New Beginning, was not composed by Band Maid but by Koji Goto from Platinum Passport, however it is a Band Maid song in its own right. That is amazing...Aniway great reaction...

This was the second exposure to Band-Maid I had seen/heard after Thrill, (and had already ordered every CD/DVD/Bluray I could find, was awaiting them in the mail.) My first thoughts were Akane = Animal from the Muppets (in a totally good way of course, lol) Kanami was bouncing around like she just didn't give a flying f*ck about anything except being lost in the music and it levitated her right out of this dimension, and last but not least, seeing Miku shoeless before Misa, I will always think of her as the barefoot one even though Misa is better known for it, hahaha.
I like the pride in Saudi's smile after Kanami's solo.
The MV is great. The live version is Awesome! 🤘

Did you notice Saiki got taller in the later part of the live version? She is barefoot at the start, as she lost her shoes surfing the crowd the song before. The shoes were recovered and Saiki put them back on during Mincho's solo. That is what MISA and Saiki are smiling at when they get together onstage, as we all know MISA is the Barefoot Assassin, fun stuff! In the MV, it's the last time you see Saiki with a apron.
The story of Saiki's missing shoes is a bit of a myth. Saiki didn't lose her shoes in the crowd, she kicked them off before she went into the "princess" section of the crowd while they were playing Freedom. She had already put them back on before this song started, and is wearing them the entire time in this video.
@@I_am_Warthog It could be voluntary on removing them, but it's clear in the video that Saiki is without them in the first part of the song, and then is with them in the second half of the song. Saiki moves around differently without her shoes, more freely, than when she is wearing the heels. I think the quick "finger" at the start is an indication of her thoughts on losing the shoes, just sayin!

@@Davey-Boyd @Wayne Benedict Yep, I went back and looked at the part you mentioned, definitely no shoes. I realized that the earlier part where I thought I saw shoes was just that the toes on her stockings are solid black.
Always look forward to your reaction of any Bandmaid song and the breakdown to their musicality, as they are the best at what they do, please big up Saiki’s vocals, as an Alto voice it’s rare in Japanese female rock music, love your reactions
I couldn't believe you hadn't heard this. I had to stop this and look through Prime to see if there was anything on "Real Existence". There wasn't one angle shot of this. They really need to do some angle shots from this song on Prime. Anyway, glad you got around to some of the early greats. I really enjoyed your comments from this!
I wish they publish official scorebook for their earlier stuff as well.

The song before this live ? I watched, Saiki got pulled into crowd, disappeared then returns in Real Ex , barefoot as she lost a shoe. Meanwhile Miku courageously kept the vocals going. That little girl ! Wow !

Few things in the live version you missed....Kanami windmilling to the opening riff, Miku tuning her guitar mid song, and Saiki barefoot, as she lost her heels temporarily during an earlier song.

still my favorite MAID video from 7 years ago. first exposure i had to them a year later in 2016. i had never heard of them before and could not believe what i was hearing and seeing. cute japanese girls rocking the hell out. love the way akane kicks in with that wicked thrash beat at the end.

MISA MISA MISA! a few things first this was Zepp 2018 not Studio Coast 2017 (no 5 big screens behind them) 2. Sai-chan doing a Miku impersonation (giving the Bird) 12:42 3. Miku doing some Pigeon Tuning 12:44 4. and the Fated meeting between the Barefoot Contessa and the Barefoot Assassin 14:05

I loved/love watching Ah- chan’s wild drumming style back then.
But at the same time I dreaded the eventual inevitable injury.
In case you haven't heard the story, during the live video, Saiki had lost her shoes at the beginning of the video; I believe the audience had something to do with it. So, during the first half of the video, MISA was joshing her about being barefoot. That was what the Saiki/MISA dance-around was all about. Then, after the solo break, Saiki had put her shoes back on (don't know if it was the same pair or backups) and then does the rest of the video like normal.
Yep. That always makes me smile. would really love to see the previous song where Saiki was in the crowd & lost her shoes. Apparantly Miku had to finish the vocals of the song. I don't even remember what song it was.
This song is from Zepp Tokyo. The song before is the best version of Freedom, it has a really cool intro with some fun interplay between the band members, no Akane drum solo but Saiki goes full on rock star in the princesses only section of the audience and takes off her shoes to stand on the railing and interact with the audience and Miku sings the last verse.

@@leemancooke907 Well I'm glad to say that I just watched the whole concert and saw the best version of Freedom (as you said Leeman) The start of the song was fantastic. So I saw poor Saiki out in the crowd and Miku finishing the song. What a treasure.

i love how Kanamis's solo is just the right length of time to let Saiki get her outdoor high heels on, and i imagine Kanami looking over her shoulder saying "Sai-chan i can go longer if you need me to"

Talking about Miku rocking out hard, she’s actually once cracked her ribs by bashing herself with her own guitar.
this was the second MV and song I heard from Band-Maid. it is THE song that hooked me on them. Thrill pulled me in, but Real Existence made me stay. and I knew from that day forth I was going to be a big fan of this band. They have never let me down since then. Everything about this song resonates with me. so good. the live version that came later is icing on the cake for me. This and Dice are way up there for me. So glad to see both of these versions get some attention this many years later. :) thank you.

Hi Wave, Yes, this and Thrill are some of their oldest songs still on recent live setlists. Also, Akane and MISA pretty much joined the band with a high level of ability after going to the same music school. The Tokyo Technical School of Music, as Ekane once described it in one of their interviews. Great reaction as ever.
My Unseen World music score book, CD and A4 sleeve arrive yesterday- Oh joy.
Akane has the best Gallop in the business. What I want to know is what they put in the background to make that ambience when everything else stops. What the hell is that? I want that in my pauses. It just makes them sound huge! It's like somebody smacked a reverb tank and they just recorded the tails and mixed it with a dying cymbal. If you're not shy about visiting Chinese websites most of the stuff that was pulled from TH-cam ahead of a DVD release is on Bilibili. That includes everything from the entire Zepp Tokyo LIVE concert.

Even if the song is not one of their self-written ones, I think it's awesome and the live video still amazes me today, the same way it did back then. The energy, camera work, Kanami's solo and seeing her headbanging in the beginning or the interaction between Misa and Saiki (and the backstory to that**), just everything about it. :)

The live video was recorded at Zepp Tokyo, not to be confused with Zepp DiverCity Tokyo. Unfortunately, in January of 2022, Zepp Tokyo closed due to the pandemic. I hate it when venues close, especially venues that are staples for bands on their way up like what the Zepp places seem to be.
Did Akane have her bad posture drumming at this point? There's so much shoulder and elbow in her motion.
I know she had back issues and has since improved her technique.
Yes bad posture. Check out the video where she covers the drum part for a Maximum The Hormone song. She's got her head bowed most of the time. She eventually needed surgery (I think) and then forced herself to sit up straighter. I'm glad because then we can see her smiling face!!

On "New Beginning" album, their second.
The uniforms were early, but not the earliest. The first were hand sewn by Miku and her mother in 2013. I'm not sure if those were seen in any official publicity materials.
On the cover of "Maid in Japan" (2014) everyone has some kind of apron and a lace-up decor for the top. Each is different, and Misa's apron looks oddly vestigial. Other aprons have the band's logo. Misa also has the little hat. Akane has some bizarre decoration on the side of her head that looks like the alien butterfly has her in thrall now.
On the cover of New Beginning, all is changed. Saiki and Misa have black gowns, no aprons. Misa got rid of Little Hat and Akane is wearing it. The only sign of a lace-up theme is the top few inches of Saiki's gown at the throat.
Akane and Kanami and Miku have "dickie" style white panels with collars as part of their tops, and Kanami's has the first version of the Band-Maid black bow. Miku has a vertical necktie style instead.
So the 2015 uniforms were either the second or possibly third editions. AFAIK.

Cool reaction/analysis. I liked Band Maid from when I first saw thrill, BUT seeing this "whole" live concert turned me into a Maidiac ...... Especially seeing Kanamis' face on this song whilst playing her solo. So much joy.... "so effortless".
This is the most bandmaid sounding song ''Written For'' them. Must be their song and instrumental arrangement.
But they definitely learned a lot from all the song writers.
I'm glad they gradually move away from the idol band look without loosing the maid theme. Forget those men-producers dressing us for their juvenile fantasies and listen how awesome are our songs. I think 2018 was the year when they became their own style in full.
As you have discovered, Band Maid's earlier material, even not written by them is still very good. I believe they arranged the songs in those days and this proves they knew what they were doing. In the live performance the 'Darkness Sisters' Misa & Saiki almost out shone the 'Lightness sisters,' Kanami & Miku.' 😄

18:42 it's the zepp serving, not the shinkiba gig, kind sir. this song was right after 'freedom', where the ice queen went down stage to sing to the princess crowd, and twin tails sang in fifth the last few lines as saiki was recovering back sans her killer high heels.
Saiki said this video is the best one to show what Band-Maid is. Great energy. Kanami is so cute in a skirt, I miss it

Did you notice that Akane is not using her Tama drums but a Sonor set? Probably her drum kit was not available. Also the guitarists all have other instruments like today. MISA has her 4-string Fender, Miku her Rickenbacker and Kanami her red AddicTone.
P.S. And Saiki wears an apron. No idea how they persuaded her to do that. She hates them.
Akane played a Sonor kit & Sabian cymbals in the beginning before switching to Tama & Zildjian. She was the first to switch to her current brands, IIRC.
Miku still has her Rickenbacker, btw ;)
