Last season Napoli fell 5-points short of winning the Scudetto, much to the displeasure of club president Aurelio De Laurentiis. He believed his side had been good enough to win Serie A, but Sarri blew their chance with his rigid tactics. So, out went Sarri and in came Carlo Ancelotti, the final piece needed to take down Juventus.

As a Napoli fan I gotta say this vid is excellent.
Yes Napoli are slightly less dominant this year than the last, but what Ancelotti is doing is something we absolutely need to do and lacked the previous seasons: tactical plan B’s, and most of, all player rotation. At this rate, within a season or two, these changes will benefit the club

Love the fact that you guys made a video about Napoli. Amazing team that plays amazing football. Also Carlo Ancelotti has put to bed the doubts that were raised following his Bayern stint showing his flexibility more than anything else. He has adapted Sarri' s tactics and made the engine better by involving more components (players)

Those weren't really doubts. You can see it nowadays that the problems Bayern have are not at the bench but on the field. Players didn't follow him since they've lost to PSG in the group stage. It just shows how much leverage players have and how at the first problem they turn against the manager. The same was/is with Real, Man Utd, Bayern this year etc.

Yes Napoli might not be playing as well as they played last season but there is a big factor for this. Last season's performance was the result of hard work of past 2 seasons, players played that way since the last 2 years and in the previous season the Saariball peaked. But now as Sarri left and took Jorginho with him, main GK Reina left and a new manager came in so the team will take a season to fully adjust and blend in Ancelotti's style.

Football isn't chess: it'n not only about tactics and positions on the pitch. Ancelotti has been great at adapting the team tactically, slowly transitioning from Sarriball to a style that reflects more his ideas, but more importantly has been able to give the team confidence, which is something he is amazingly good at. The results end up to be similar (the same points in Serie A, third place in UCL group), but the way they almost knocked out Liverpool and Psg out of the Champions League and continued winning many games in Italy despite the growth of the average level of the League is a huge accomplishment for Ancelotti. He also manages to involve many more players rotating them a lot, something that (we see at Chelsea too) Sarri isn't really great at.

@@sneezylasagne8534 football does not have phases of play. The best coaches have shown that to be ultimate in terms of success, you have to be prepared for defense while attacking and keep your team ready to attack while defending. Infact, there are no phases and defense and offense are easily shifting from one to another. For eg: counter pressing does not work unless you have the players ready for the transition and that includes defensive organisation when you have the ball.

@@sneezylasagne8534 also, football isn't like chess because in football, players are interchangeable and each can perform each other's role. That is what total football, positional play, sarriball, klopps Liverpool all stand for. In chess, the pieces have stipulated strengths and weaknesses that cannot change but in football, you can train your players to perform a variety of roles. Also, football has a fifth element you didn't mention. Training: individual development is also of critical importance for coaxing out the depths of talent from a player and only a true great manager can do that.

And to all those people saying Sarri ball is scam remember that once Gegen pressing and tiki taka were also considered a scam by sceptics.
Sarri is a brilliant tactian coaching a team with ungrateful fans and passionless players, still he had the longest unbeaten streak (in all competitions) of all English teams.
Atleast be patient be the guy who has never had a stand out title winning side before getting the Chelsea job.
Sure he doesn't have trophies but that doesn't define his coaching prowess [By that definition emery and tuchel(that's psg's manager btw)are better than pep guardiola in the last few seasons and klopp is some old bloke]

Fabian Ruiz, Simone Verdi and 3 good goolkeepers. Sarriball was less effective at the end of last season because of the LACK OF SUBSTITUTES IN THE OFFENSIVE ROLES.

Napoli aren't playing better under Ancelotti but that doesn't mean they're not playing well. Sarriball takes time and the right components, Chelsea don't have this atm. That squad has ran through managers. Chelsea need an overhaul and to start fresh or this cycle will repeat itself. People are quick to call Sarri a fraud based off 6 months cause this world has no patience anymore. But he has Chelsea where they should be, a 4th place side. @SFIFA Tactical inflexibility isn't always a bad thing, until this season Klopp had Liverpool playing one way - it had it's strengths and weaknesses but it's built the foundation for the team that could win the PL with record points if they keep pushing at their current rate. Once you get past his eccentric, likable personality there were so many reasons for people to doubt him before last season's CL run. Patience with these fanatical managers can be rewarded.
He's still learning about the players he has, e.g. he's been playing Hazard as a false 9 because he identified neither Morata or Giroud are capable of playing as a focal point striker for him so he tried something different, and the signing of Higuain equally suggests he's further identified Hazard as a false 9 also doesn't work. He's played Kante as a box-to-box for tactical reasons, but his attacking movement has slowly improved as the season's gone on (it's better than Kovacic & Barkley's combined), you can see the influence of Sarri's coaching and given time it's gunna make him an even better, even more complete player.
I'm not necessarily suggesting Sarri will wind up working long term, but we have to be patient with him. He's not a Conte/Mourinho/Allegri/Ancelotti, because of his way of coaching he's going to need time to see the full benefits of it.

As a Napoli fan who watches every game and has been following this channel for a long time, this is a great video. You've summarized the key differences very well, although I'd say you've been a bit harsh on Sarri and lenient towards Carletto.
Despite a better squad (Verdi, F.Ruiz, Milik uninjured) this year compared to last, Napoli are doing worse on every front compared to 17/18. While I think it's ridiculous to expect great results from a transition year such as this, it has been very disheartening to watch a team who last year almost brought us the first league title in decades suddenly battling for second place with Inter, while playing a less aesthetically pleasing brand of football to boot.
I won't go as far as condemning Ancelotti. But I will question the decisionmaking of our megalomaniac president; blaming a manager for "wasting a chance at the scudetto" when the chance being there was an overachievment in and of itself is questionable. There was even a lot of talk around the city that De Laurentiis sacked Sarri out of jealousy, since he has been disliked during his entire tenure as owner despite lifting the club from Serie C to CL while Sarri was quickly adopted as a hero.
Going back to my original point: I think fans would be a lot more positive if Carletto had managed to keep the beatiful style of play, even if the points were not as many. Or if the style was more cynical, but we were competing for the title with juventus. Now, we have neither and came third in our CL group to rub extra salt into the wound.
It will be very, very interesting to see where Ancelotti will take this team, especially since he will have an opportunity to bring in players who suit his style in the summer.

Good post. Though I'm not sure you can say Ancelotti is doing worse in Europe than Sarri in 17/18. It also has to be taken into account Juventus have only dropped 4 points and are having a stroll of it this year. Juventus have deeper pockets, more power, Cr7, etc... Expecting a manager in his first season to win the Scudetto against such a dominant team is perhaps unfair.
Sarri really was a great manager for Napoli, though.

Great video Tifo! Really like the videos about Serie A and at least people get to know the league a little bit more. Ancelotti transformed the team a lot after their 3-0 defeat to Sampdoria. He kept the short passing and added some new tactical options. Sarri was (still is) very stubborn about his tactics, he tends to play the same way the entire match. Chelsea fans must stop calling him and Jorginho a "fraud". He's doing better then Conte last year and Chelsea should focus on going to the Champions. Like I wrote in a video at the beginning of the season: players must deliver as told by Sarri. Nothing more nothing less. And I think he's right about motivating players. Nowadays these are overpaid millionaires who should be motivated by default because of their salary and not act like a little kid at the first problem. Just look at Man Utd: from going against the manager and being a shame to its clubs name - to performing and showing what they're capable of.

agree on the idiotic fans calling them "frauds". I'm a Chelsea fan and am disgusted by this but sadly in England they're way too impatient to these exciting ideas of actual football that doesn't rely on physical attributes is frowned upon and seen as "can't work in England"... Which is what they told Pep but once he got his players he made the league his bitch. Hopefully Sarri does similarly.

Plus Juve had key help from the referee.... the so called Sarriball is a process that takes years to be implemented. Last season it was amazing, but as you highlighted, Napoli ran out of gas in the end. I would not compare the 3rd year of Sarri's obsessive tactics with the first year under Ancelotti. He has not been hired to win the scudetto this year. He has been hired to fix all the issues and create a new model that will not destroy the market price of players (Maksimovic, Ounas, Diawara they were sinking into oblivion) while improving the endurance of the team to last until the end of the season. It is now that this model must prove its value. In the second leg, when the best-of Sarriball started to collapse, the new model must keep the pace. It's useless to focus on Scudetto and Juventus for this season, because they could add CR7 to their already impressive team and we had to reboot.

I'm sorry but there's no way you're gonna tell me they're playing better than last year or in 2016-2017 for that matter. That stupid 4-4-2 formation with Insigne-Mertens or Insigne-Milik is absolutely laughable. Fullbacks never know when to overlap properly and players like Callejon, a fairly traditional right winger seems completely lost and helpless. Every goal feels hard-earned and doesn't really rely on their utter dominance through possession as much as in their opponent's brainfarts. Seeing the two midgets roaming up front with wingers unable to find them in the center of the pitch gives me headaches week after week. It's a depressing time to be a Napoli fan.

Simple. Their owner views Arsenal as a cash-grab and is using the money to build a new stadium in another franchise he owns, the LA Rams (NFL). He doesn't care about Arsenal and is using it as a business, where he's maximizing his profit, to the detriment of the club. Unfortunately, until he starts losing money from Arsenal (unlikely due to : sponsorships, very lucrative TV deals and merchandise sales) it's probably going to stay the same. Which is quite sad for the fans but also the world of football that a big football club is being treated this way.

I watch again this video 3 years after... I think Di Laurentiis just made a mistake.
    Sarri was his best coach.
You have nothing to improve (nothing who deserves a change of man, I mean) when you score 91 points !!
Espacially with a team like Napoli. Sarri did obtain 110% of the squad !
Ancelotti had no chance to do better !
It's the same with Tottenham who fired Pocchetino, for Mourinho.
Directors want to "improve" but they just lack of respect to their coaches. They need a better squad if the directors want more, but no coaches could improve a team ruled by a very good predecessor with a very good chemistry and a very good tactical system that every player work perfectly.
Even Guardiola failed to improve Heynckes' Bayern (and Ancelotti to improve Guardiola's one)
Just think of it : when Ancelotti took over Chelsea, Real Madrid, Everton and even Real a second time, the clubs were in some crisis (or at least in lack of success) and he succeeded
When he took over PSG, Bayern and Napoli who were great before him, he failed (at least at the beginning for PSG)
Directors never heard of "dont change a winning team" ? (And I repeat : Napoli WAS a winning team : 91 points with this squad !!)
