Ever since this series was announced I was hoping they would cover The Godfather one day but thought it was too mainstream for them. Today is a blessed day.
The gag of this movie is somehow Ebert got a large population of adult men to watch this movie and suffer together in solidarity, or mutual self hate in wondering why the hell we watched this movie in the first place. We'll blame Monte.
Would love to see a follow up to this Arc with you guys picking a movie in the same genre as the movies featured in Spit Roast but ones you all agree are better movies and compare & contrast why/how. Feel Kingdom of Heaven & Her or Lost in Translation would follow up nicely with the previous movies shown. Never heard Rich or Thoorin mention it which is surprising but Dog Soldiers maybe.
i unfortunately got firstly exposed to this garbage in hs by the girl who I had a crush on who also ofc was stringing me along, so I can kind of relate to Richard and also experience this review as a sort of catharsis
what's incredible is how good ratings this film has and how many people remember (or misremember) it fondly, like what? I managed not even 30 min and it only reminded me of my naive teens when i let myself being dragged around by what turned out to be just absolute c*nt. btw next movie arc, goated❤
they will do a kurosawa arc don't worry i'm sure they'll do 2 kurosawa arcs since one arc does not cover the amount of cinematic masterpieces that man made
I remember enjoying this movie when it first came out, but I was a teenage girl who was really into Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. That's my excuse, lol. Rewatching it now, though, was rough. I found it thoroughly unenjoyable and noticed it promotes some pretty toxic relationship traits. It's hard to believe adult movie critics thought this was a good film back then... Oh well, was worth the rewatch for this banger episode.
I remember watching this when I was 14/15 and dating my first mentally ill girlfriend. I loved it, i rewatched it in my early 20s and hated everything about it and watching it again at 30 has confirmed i wasn't being too harsh on my second viewing.
I saw this movie when I was 16, at the end of summer, after going through my first breakup. It really resonated with me then. I think I'll let it live in memory and never ever rewatch it.
I saw it twice in theaters when I was literally 15 so I think Thorin was spot on with that thought. I think it was somewhat relatable at the time only because that’s how teenagers treat relationships so it made sense to me. I haven’t seen it since then but these characters being adults and behaving that way definitely makes no sense
Listening to Monte try to explain American Hipsters to the others, and they keep saying "these people didn't exist". As a person who had also hit young adulthood in a populated city at exactly that time, my sides are splitting. Those people absolutely existed in spite of what they want to believe.
Great video as always, but Monte ffs! Animal Collective is a great band that havent aged badly, Strawberry jam and merriweather is goated albums from the 2000s, you just gotten old xD, but i do agree alot of bands from that time period as aged poorly, but there is some interesting art from that perid AmCo for example
Animal Collective is a good band and I listened to them right before I watched this review lol. Since he mentioned them as a hipster band I do think Monte meant like Merriweather Post Pavilion era and I don't like that very much either. Anything before 2007 is absolute gold from them though as far as I am concerned.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ money shots. ... don't think there will ever be a romance arc..ugh but finally a movie that disgusts me but others consider a hidden gem. 5:1010:3038:5454:011:01:07 1:04:20 intro 1:08:40 1:13:23
As a follow up for money shot, you guys can all watch the same movie at the same time and you give us your opinions immediately after it finishes. You can call it gangb... you know what, might need to workshop this one.
Zooeys eyes and voice make you think she doesn’t have a soul and it has always engrossed me. This film is shit though. I prefer her in yes man when she is pretty similar
I watched this movie at the cinema when it came out with 6 girls + 1 guy. Everyone loved it, it appalled me. I felt like they were all bullshitting each other. I'm very glad 3 seasoned movie aficionados and critics such as yourselves ganged up on this piece of sht movie
Also if you guys are reviewing movies intended to be serious and are somewhat highly regarded but in actuality was awful to the point of being hilarious, Ricochet from 91 is worth a look
The Unicorns and Animal Collective rule lmao.Animal Collective's pop stuff trickled into hipster culture sure but their overall catalogue is way too whacked out for the average Shins listener. You go listen to Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished and tell me that a hipster is gonna play that on their back porch with PBR and a joint to their friends hammocking in the backyard. Monte needs go do another round of ayahuasca. Joking aside, I also hated this movie as a teenager. It was the first movie I went out to see with girls in my class and one of the girls I went with got all the wrong ideas from this movie, became obsessed with me, and then sabotaged any hope I had with my crush. There is something strangely insidious about it. Also wearing an Unknown Pleasures t-shirt is like a trope of hipster symbolism. It's a meme that people think it's just a cool design for a t-shirt. Pretty symbolic of the whole movie.
Merriweather post pavilion is an evergreen album and I’m not even a fan of electronic music per se. i think everyone should have to listen to that album a few times. I wouldn’t associate that band with the hipster era. Same time, sure. But not the same spirit.
"It was grunge for white middle class kids who would never touch drugs" said Richard furiously, secretly ashamed of his skintone. He quickly added "not weed though" as that was socially proper to consider the holy bush as medicine in those circles. "It's so white I can't process it" he added a few moments later, channelling his inner beast, an old blonde heartache called Froskurinn
White people are so detached from actual racism that the mere mention of their skin tone by a even a fellow white man makes some of them uncomfortable.
I found it okay because at the time of release every romantic movie being made had some crazy love story in spite of everything going wrong...this was the only movie that showed that not every relationship will work, but that doesn't mean the experience isn't worthwhile, and I found the ending where they don't end up together but meet new people to get excited about surprisingly relatable As a movie that guys would get dragged into seeing by the girlfriends (which is how I saw it), it was surprisingly refreshing
Isn't that the point of the movie to be ironic about the meaningless late 20's ? The contrast between what your "childish you" would want and what you are discovering is absolute shit in the context of an adult life. Surrealness for menchildren who haven't yet reached adulthood. I don't think it's a great movie, although it has interesting beats. I just don't think it's made to be interesting to jaded men, like Thorin said: it's pretty good for young adults who don't know anything about life.

I'm going to take this as a roast of the 2 people I've dated that were obsessed with this movie
I love how Richard went full "investigative journalism" to fucking murder Mark Weeb and the others involved in this movie. My GOAT
Hell yeah, it's finally here, been refreshing youtube all day long
Ever since this series was announced I was hoping they would cover The Godfather one day but thought it was too mainstream for them. Today is a blessed day.
Man those movies for the next arc are all time bangers. Will be a good cleansing of the palette after spitroast.
It's so funny to see Thorin get annoyed at being interrupted when he regularly interrupts others
Time stamps ?
Money Shot might be the best arc in the series, what a set of bangers.
I'm having a hard time listening to this at the gym because it's making me laugh too much, shoutout Mark Webb
The gag of this movie is somehow Ebert got a large population of adult men to watch this movie and suffer together in solidarity, or mutual self hate in wondering why the hell we watched this movie in the first place.
We'll blame Monte.
The way you described 500 days of summer is the same way I felt about the master: A movie about two dislikeable people and nothing happens...
Rewatch the episode about the master then
Fight me
I love these podcasts/reviews! Glad you guys keep on doing it.
Thorin just saying "Bro you're a fucking loser at 29:28 had me fucking dying LMFAO
I am guilty of liking this movie as a 17 year old wanna be hipster and vouching for it til I rewatched it, to my own horror, at age 23.
Hahaha I was like 15 when these films were big, my gf at the time was obsessed with The Fault In Our Stars, I feel ya Richard 🤣
i was literally about to watch this film, thank god for this LOL
yeah it was average
I love when Thorin yells booooo and thumbs down shit 😂 he always gets so into it everytime 😂😂
Would love to see a follow up to this Arc with you guys picking a movie in the same genre as the movies featured in Spit Roast but ones you all agree are better movies and compare & contrast why/how. Fourth time asking for a Kurosawa arc
that would be amazing
Looks like you still havent noticed that they dont request from the peanut gallery
It will happen. I love Kurosawa.
@@rooskrist7870 Wtf is a peanut gallery?

All I can say is thank you. I tried watching this a few months ago; supposedly a cult classic, high IMDB rating etc. Didn't make it past 30 minutes.
Agree with everything you guys said. Honestly it just left me with a sour feeling. Looking forward to Godfather, has been on my list for too long.
Richie Lew's twatspirations absolutely creased me 😂😂

I gotta see a The Fisher King episode, such a great film
Just the fact the movie created such a strong reaction from you took my desire to watch it from 0% to 10% :>
Wondering why Animal Collective were catching strays, until I remembered Monte's 13th Warrior pick 😁 Excited for the next arc!
This arc was my favorite for sure. Cheers lads
30:10 Aint no way Thorin is getting mad that someone cut him off 😂
I saw this movie when I was 16, at the end of summer, after going through my first breakup. It really resonated with me then. I think I'll let it live in memory and never ever rewatch it.
I, too, have a horror story of seeing this film for the first time. I'm 100% here for this

Would love to see you guys watch Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama (1993)!
Jojos bizarre adventure is a much better example of an artist sharing their playlist
at 45 minutes in, I related to Montes rant so much, i hate everything zooooeey makes and is in.
One of my favorite movies that everyone seems to hate is (2015) The Lobster. I would love to see that movie reviewed by horsemen!
my body is ready
Oh hell yeah. I cant wait for Jurassic Park as a huge fan of the film, book and dinosaurs in generall.

Moneyshot arc is the palate cleanser needed after this. Sick episode still but fuck roger ebert for giving this a 4
For the next months set of movies, please make Ray liotta laughing but with Richards face
Also, Troll 2 lmao

If one of them was a wereworf :D

I loved this movie as a teenager. Zooey Deschanel is incandescent.

I looked up The Unicorns. Their music is an absolute mess.
Really deep and profound movie.
Calling something "deep and profound" is hilariously redundant.
deeply and pofoundly terrible
Also if you guys are reviewing movies intended to be serious and are somewhat highly regarded but in actuality was awful to the point of being hilarious, Ricochet from 91 is worth a look

it's alright
Only thing this movie reminds me of is my ex.

This film is without a doubt the worst one in all of the four play episodes.
7.7 on IMDB? Surely they're overdoing how bad it is 🤣
I enjoyed this film because I got to laugh at a bunch of pathetic bullshit my friends and I have thought before... but I am 18
