It's always fun watching people's expressions when the 'atatatatas' hit. Trust me, once you see how good this band actually is you will come around to appreciating Gimme Chocolate more. It's best not to have pre-conceived expectations when listening to Babymetal. Just go with it. They are a blast. One of the best live shows you will ever see.

@@jybrokenhearted I've heard a lot of good things about the Atlanta shows, especially in 2018. They had great crowds. A Babymetal concert is measured, not by the quality of Babymetal's performance (that will always be 100%) but by the quality of the crowd.

You won't be disappointed. I was watching and the moment you went from a "WTF am I watching?!" face to cracking a smile, dancing to the choreo., and humming the melody, I knew you were in and would watch more. It is going to be very interesting and entertaining, I have no doubt. As someone else may have said before, often times people new to BABYMETAL go through a 3 song "trial period". The first song is "WTF?!", the second song is more "Wait...I think I like this?!?!, and the third song is "Holy shit, this is awesome and I'm a fan!!"
They're just so good and different. A complete breath of fresh air to metal music for me. I have scarcely gone a day since becoming a fan last April without listening to them or watching a reaction video. I feel like my day would just suck if I didn't do one or both of those things.
Needless to say, I'm going to enjoy watching your trek down the fox hole. Find a comfy spot, drinks and snacks come by regularly.

Now, that you got this song out of the way, I think you will REALLY enjoy the rest of the 40+ songs they made over the past 10 years. All of their songs are different from the last, but this one has the biggest WTF factor and is harder for the brain to wrap around. This song almost turned me off to BABYMETAL when I first saw it a few years ago, but luckily I watched more performances, especially the live ones, and became a big fan. @Grington300 3 ปีที่แล้ว +84

Good reaction. Yours was not untypical when 'Gimme Chocolate' is the first song you hear - it was the song that blew up and got them noticed mostly because of the shock and WTF factor, it is not their best by a long way and would not be the first song I would recommend to a metalhead - maybe 6 or 7 songs in once you had a better idea what they are about. Having said that it is great fun live (and better than this, as it was the official video they dubbed the studio audio over the film of the live performance ... they actually sound a lot better live).
This was filmed at the Makuhari Messe in December 2013, so there were about 8-9,000 people - but that was before they had even released their first album. They sold out the Tokyo Dome (55,000 people) two nights running in 2016 and played a completely different set list each night - all the songs from their first two albums.
They are not in school uniforms - they invented their own genre - 'Kawaii Metal' which is a fusion of metal with Jpop aesthetics (kawaii means cute), so their costumes are like armour or dragon scales on top, cute tutus for skirts ... these have changed gradually as they matured, but you will never see anything sexualising them - no exposed skin, no dubious dance moves, no questionable lyrics.
BABYMETAL are Su-metal (now 23) and Moametal (now 21) - the third original member, Yuimetal, sadly left the band in October 2018 having been absent from the stage for the previous 12 months. She had ongoing (and undisclosed) health issues and had not fully recovered so was still unable to perform, so she announced she would be leaving the band and hoped to follow her own long held dreams.
Since the start of the 2019 tour Su and Moa have been supported in live shows by three dancers (the Avengers) who take turns to dance in the third spot (they do not have any vocals so far). They are Kano, Riho and Momoko.
'Gimme Chocolate' was the song that got them noticed and that most people heard (and many dismissed them as a gimmick because of the WTF reaction it gets - they already had earlier songs like 'Headbanger' and 'Megitsune' that are much better and that those people dismissing them would have been far better off hearing first), but they have many more songs that are more meaningful ... and all of them are different, they never get boring.
They have songs in virtually every metal genre (thrash, speed, power, black, prog, folk, djent and so on) but will also mix in other musical styles and genres with the metal. Some songs are straight metal, others (like 'Gimme Chocolate') lean towards their Jpop roots and they do everything in between - and they do it all really well.
When they started in 2010 they had no budget from their agency, this was the pet project of just one man (a lifelong metalhead with a great love and respect for metal) based entirely around the vocal talents of the lead singer who thought her vocals too powerful for pop and that she could front a metal/pop fusion band. They had to be self-funding (they even borrowed clothes to make their costumes for their first shows with the Idol group - the other sub-units had theirs paid for) as no agency in Japan in 2010 would have invested in metal as there was virtually no market for it at that time, but under the umbrella of the Idol group there was no risk to them if it didn't take off or just failed.
So they sang their songs and danced to a backing track with pre-recorded instrumentals and they started to gain a small following. They started to play their own shows, starting off in warehouses and tiny venues with a capacity of 150-250 people and they played the food hall at a metal festival.
As they gained more popularity a little more budget was made available and late in 2012 the live band (the Kami Band - some of Japan's very best session musicians) were brought in to play the encores in a couple of shows and they played at a couple of festivals with BABYMETAL.
In 2013 Su was 15 and it was time for her to graduate from the Idol group (it had a school theme and was for girls aged 10 to 15) and it was decided that BABYMETAL should be her vehicle and should separate from the Idol group to go with her as an independent band in their own right.
In December 2013 she turned 16 and the final step was taken in the transformation of BABYMETAL from sub-unit of the Idol group to independent band and the Kami Band became their full time support in all live shows early in 2014. They have been with them ever since.
So in their 10 years they have grown from a virtually unfunded sub-unit of a Jpop Idol group to become the most successful Japanese band (of any genre, not just rock or metal) internationally (there are many bigger and better known bands in Japan, but outside of Japan most of those bands are virtually unknown).
They have done world tours every year since 2014. In 2019 they played 20 headline dates in 15 States all round the US ending with their first US Arena show at the Forum in LA and early in 2020 they toured many of the countries in Europe and the UK (about 15 or 18 dates I think) ending with shows in Petersburg and Moscow in Russia.
They have toured with Korn, Guns n Roses, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and others, opened for Metallica and Judas Priest, collaborated with DragonForce, Bring Me The Horizon and some people from other bands, been nominated for over 30 international awards (things like Best Live Band and many others) and won most of them. They were the first Japanese band to headline Wembley Arena in the UK, they sold out the Tokyo Dome (55,000 people) two nights running, they are the first Asian band ever to have an album at Number 1 in the Billboard Hard Rock Charts and they are now one of the very best live bands in the world.
In case you were curious, their name 'BABYMETAL' is not about their age (although when they started in 2010 they were aged 12 and 11 so it probably did play a part too). The name was chosen for two reasons: - to symbolize that they gave birth to a new genre of metal music (kawaii metal) - because the writing (and pronunciation) in Japanese is nearly identical to the writing of "heavy metal" (and they love a pun):
    BABYMETAL = ベビメタル (be-bi-me-ta-ru)
    heavy metal = ヘビメタル (he-bi-me-ta-ru)
So yes please for more BABYMETAL reactions and maybe we can give you a better idea of why they are so popular and why they have grown so big from their very humble beginnings. I think I will suggest another song from this same concert - 'Headbanger' live at Legend 1997 (the lead singer Su-metal was born in 1997, this show was celebrating her 16th birthday) th-cam.com/video/QEsOaMbNFww/w-d-xo.html and this one really is live.
Alternatively so you can see the Kami Band in action and Su-metal doing a solo song without Yui and Moa (so no choreo or "atatatatatata dukyuns" in this, just Su-metal showing why the whole idea for BABYMETAL was developed around her) 'Rondo of Nightmare' with the 'Mischiefs of the Metal Gods' instrumental intro live at Budokan, Black Night from March 2014 th-cam.com/video/8WBDiLMNZcE/w-d-xo.html

Great reaction BABYMETAL is a fusion band which started out as an experiment as their producer liked J-pop and heavy metal so he decided to fuse the 2 together they started in 2010 and became really successful when gimme chocolate went viral in 2014. They’ve been touring worldwide ever since selling out stadiums everywhere that wasn’t Tokyo dome as Tokyo dome they performed in front of 55000 people. The singers started when Suzuka Nakamoto (Sumetal) was 12 and Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) and Moa Kikuchi (Moametal) both were 11. They do choreographed dances to all their songs and no song is the same as they blend different genres metal and non metal. I suggest the next song to do is road of resistance. The guitar riffs was written by dragonforce. Welcome to the fox hole 🤘🦊

I've been a metalhead all my life. I couldn't get my wife or daughters to listen to or watch any metal at all. Then one day BabyMetal popped up so I clicked. It was this song I had to watch it at least 3 times to believe it. Then I thought it's not for me. A couple years later it popped up again. I thought my wife has to watch this. I think it's the first metal song she danced and was singing along with the video. We both started watching Babymetal videos she fell in love with the girls cuteness and the music. The next day when I got home from work my wife and daughters were watching BabyMetal videos. Now my daughters are listening to metal on Spotify. Who would think. I'm down on my knees thanking the Fox God. I'm a big fan of BabyMetal now. I'm sure there are plenty of women listening to metal now. I know because I live with 3 of them.

    - BABYMETAL was formed in 2010 as a sub-unit of the J-Pop group Sakura Gakuin, with the original three members being: Su-Metal (Suzuka Nakamoto), Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno), and Moametal (Moa Kikuchi), who were just 11 and 12 years old when their first song "Doki Doki Morning" was recorded. They eventually split off from Sakura Gakuin and became their own thing.
    - This was their "Legend 1997" concert in Makuhari Messe, which had about 8,000-9,000 people in attendance. This concert was to celebrate the lead vocalist, Su-Metal's 16th birthday (she was born on 12-20-1997). This is kinda a smaller crowd compared to what they do now, but this was also in 2013 before they even had released an album.
    - BABYMETAL has gone on several world tours and has sold out big arenas around the world. such as Wembley, The Forum (LA), and back-to-back 55,000+ concerts at the Tokyo Dome. They have also toured/played with bands such as Metallica, Guns N Roses, Korn, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and several others.
    - It is impossible to "get" BABYMETAL after one song, especially this one. They have 40+ songs and they all sound totally different. They hit so many different styles and genres, you really gotta listen to a few songs before you can really get a feel for them.
    - I would recommend what fans have coined as the "Trilogy of Death", which is the last three songs from this same "Legend 1997" concert, which will kinda give you a better feel for what they are all about. These three songs together tell a cool story and really shows what they can do at their live shows. Here is a link to all three songs (in a playlist): th-cam.com/play/PLgTCT7PubgAHBIRR5NEnwQB1DK1COsH3N.html

They were really proud of that crowd as it was the largest at the time. That was Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. It wasn't even the full size of the venue. It was about 9000 people. That was Dec 21 2013. A few months later they played at Sonisphere in the UK for 50,0000. But that was a festival. They did a two night headlining show at Budokan for about 14,000 about the same time frame as Sonisphere. In 2016 they played a two night headlining show at Tokyo Dome for 55,000. They've headlined Wembley in the UK and the LA Forum in America. They play different size shows around the world. In Japan they play a lot of shows for about 20,000.
The Sonisphere performance was because of this music video. They were originally signed to play a small stage but this music video went viral and they were bumped up to a main stage (but in the early afternoon when usually nobody is paying much attention). They only played about 6 songs it was a short show but they sold the most merch at the festival and were a big hit. They're fantastic live. It's possible to scoff at their music videos but even haters have to admit that their live shows are a real show.
You should watch 'Headbanger' live at Legend of 1997. th-cam.com/video/QEsOaMbNFww/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=abrmetal That is the same concert as the one in this video but it's an actual live video and it's a huge difference. Legend of 1997 was Dec 21 2013 for the 16th birthday of their lead singer Suzuka Nakamoto. Or as they say in Japan Nakamoto Suzuka. They seem like a gimmick in the music videos but they're legit in live performances. Their music videos are intended for normies not real metal fans.

@@blueskytheory - I really like your reaction that was great. I mean, i liked Gimme Chocolate immediately but i knew it was Jpop mixed with Metal and that it wasn't a metal band exactly. If you're expecting to hear a metal band i can see how it would be offputting. Because it is not. Not exactly. It never was.
But what i am saying is that your reaction was honest that is all we ask for. I am not looking for someone to kiss our ass and tell us how great everything is. I don't feel like Babymetal needs that.
I don't like it when people call Babymetal simply a metal band. I like sprite and i like water. But if i am expecting one and get the other it's not good. I think it's much better to say they're a fusion of Jpop and Metal because that is the truth and people won't be expecting the wrong thing.

This seems to be the typical entry point, but for the next level try Headbanger Live at Legend of 1997 Apocalypse (Makuhare Messe). (1997 is in reference to Su-metal's birth year. She was 15, just turning 16 at the time of these concerts. Yup and Moa were both 14.)

It's a typical reaction to rock out in the beginning, and then suddenly stop when the girls start singing. It's hilarious, it's like a deer being caught in headlights. But one piece of advice, don't look away from their videos, not for just a moment, cause you'll miss something. Welcome to Babymetal. Every one one of their songs are different, so you should definitely listen to more of their songs. I listen to them everyday because it's upbeat, high energy, fun, cute, and Su-metal has a really good voice. This song is considered their "WTF" song when people start listening to them. I would suggest Megitsune official video, same with Karate official video, and Road of Resistance live in Japan. The latter is totally metal-anthem epic. And then eventually, you can watch their live performances at the Tokyo Dome with a packed house of 55,000. If you want to hear the quality of her voice in a ballad, No Rain No Rainbow comes to mind. Keep up the great reactions!

Gimme Chocolate is probably one of the most unironically J-pop of Babymetal's songs. It's not the most well liked of songs amongst their fans because it does not display the singing talent of the lead singer, Su-metal, well and does not include the Kami Band ,but it is the one that is often the gateway drug to the foxhole .
The initial reaction of many metal fans is embarrassment because they are enjoying the performance, but I think it's best to just go with the flow and allow yourself to be entertained. I think you did that as it didn't take very long for Babymetal to exert their super power and make you smile. I would recommend that you now listen to the last 3 songs from this concert to get a better feel for the sort of show that Babymetal put on. So here are Headbanger, Akatsuki and Babymetal DEATH, the themes are leaving childhood behind, commitment, sacrifice and rebirth.

If you want to see a more 'metal' performance try Headbanger from this same show, Legend 1997. The 1997 refers to the lead singers birth year, this concert was to celebrate her 16th birthday, the other 2 girls were 14 at the time th-cam.com/video/QEsOaMbNFww/w-d-xo.html

They should have renamed this song shortly after its release to _Gimme Shockolate,_ that would be fair :) Welcome to Babymetal! As a musician yourself I think you gonna like what they do. Regarding the number of views (which you call _clicks_ and what is actually far more accurate), I've just watched a couple of your band's videos and have to say you are way way better than those TH-cam numbers, I was really surprised with the songs and the production quality so going to check the rest of your videos. It also made me think of another Japanese metal band _Ningen Isu_ who are amazing and are doing their thing for over 30 years but it was only a couple of years ago that they got enough recognition to arrange their first mini-tour outside of Japan - they played a few gigs in Germany and the UK in the beginning of 2020. Hope you don't need to wait for that long. Looking forward to your next Babymetal reaction and also would like to suggest one of the more recent Ningen Isu videos called _Heartless Scat_ (it has English subtitles for the lyrics): th-cam.com/video/CbI79e5iZKs/w-d-xo.html

4:01 Babymetal is a bit like a train wreck, hard to look away ;-)
Well, it's the big boys metal, but with little girls.
And they are genre blending/mashing masters. I'm certain it doesn't make much sense yet, but after a few more songs you'll be able to see their is a lot more going on.
7:18 while it's Japanese Pop (J-pop, don't ever say K-pop) it has the roots in Jazz.
7:34 "WTF" yeah, that's basically the reaction of most people so they share it with friends.
Babymetal has proven you can break through the language barrier with music. The language doesn't matter as much as you think.
10:00 I can tell you Wacken is basically the only place Babymetal hasn't played yet. They were planned to perform at Hellfest in 2020, but well... we all know what happened.
They were supposed to perform in 2020 at festivals: Manila opening for Iron Maiden, Rock am Ring, Rock im Park, Nova Rock, Graspop, Hellfest, Download Festival.
Want to see Babymetal at a metal/rock festival in the west ?: Babymetal Ijime,Dame,Zettai at Sonisphere, UK 2014 or Karete Download, UK 2016.

  • @Ratherbflyin
    @Ratherbflyin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I don't recall where this particular performance was off the top of my head, but it wasn't the Tokyo Dome. They did play at the Tokyo Dome a bit later in their career. Two sold-out nights back-to-back. They haven't played Wacken yet to my knowledge, though I do hope they get the chance to at some point. They have played at several big UK festivals though, including Sonisphere and Download.
While I personally don't think that BABYMETAL has any "bad" songs, I don't think that Gimme Chocolate is a good song to introduce someone to the band. This is more of a "fun" song, and doesn't really showcase all that they are capable of. I am sure that you have already been inundated with suggestions of other songs to react to, so I won't add to that chaos. I will just say that if you stick around, you will find that BABYMETAL is a fantastic band, which is evidenced by the fact that in a recent fan poll Metal Hammer magazine ranked BABYMETAL number 10 in the top 50 metal bands OF ALL TIME.

  • @Zedem0n
    @Zedem0n 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Not only BABYMETAL is a thing... It's also one of the best things that's happened to metal in decades. I know you can't see that right now. Gimme Chocolate isn't really the best introduction for a metalhead but don't worry... Once you're 3 or 4 videos in I think there's a high chance you'll be a fan and will be wondering why it took you so long to give them a chance. I'm a metalhead and slept on them until I watched one live video of theirs. Took one live video. Now they're my favourite band. Yah that happened overnight.
And no this was merely the Makuhari Messe. I think it can't go much more than 10-15k capacity... They did do Tokyo Dome though in 2016... Two nights in a row... With 55k people attending both nights. So yeah. I also know you're currently wondering why they have so much success but trust me that's not because of that MV. They're seriously no joke one of the best live bands on the planet right now. I've seen them the same year I've seen Die Antwood, Rammstein and Metallica and I'd trade all of these away for another BABYMETAL concert. Not that I didn't thoroughly enjoy the other bands but they don't hold a candle to BM shows lol.
And one last thing if you think THAT is a school uniform then you need to send me information as to what schools you know make their girls wear these because I'm sending my daughters there asap. That looks badass.

Babymetal is homage to many genres of metal that is why I love it. From Power Metal, to straight , to fusion with J-pop, to rap-metal to metal ballads. In three albums they showed so many of different takes on metal. Gimme Chocolate is shock value to gather attention. But there is Rondo , B.M.C. Road, Awadama fever , Sis Anger, Distortion, One, NO RAIN, NO RAINBOW. This is great band to introduce people to metal and choose what they like about it. And veterans love Babymetal because it introduces what is missing in metal lately. Passion.

Good reaction! Thank you for giving BABYMETAL a chance. "Gimme Chocolate" is far from being their best song and does not give a complete representation of their talents. This song and video went viral due to it's WTF factor created by it's overly cute vocals in contrast to it's heavy music. Here is a little bit of BABYMETAL info...In 2019, BABYMETAL became the first Asian artists to hit #1 on BILLBOARD's Top Rock Albums chart with their latest album, "Metal Galaxy" and a few months ago it was announced that the album won the MTV Japan VMA 2020 award for BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR. BABYMETAL has been melting faces for TEN years. Su, the lead singer, is currently 23 years old, while Moa and Yui are 21. Yes, they were very young when BABYMETAL was formed! In this video, Su is 16 years old.
BABYMETAL have performed with, toured, or opened for Metallica, Korn, Dragonforce, Guns N' Roses, Lady Gaga, Rob Halford of Judas Priest (there's a great youtube video of their performance with Rob at a metal award show), and Red Hot Chili Peppers (there is a youtube video of them performing Gimme Chocolate with RHCP, as well as with Korn, and DragonForce), to name a few of many. They have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Glastonbury, Download, Sonisphere, etc), US, and Asia. Plus the 20+ awards they have been given. They have 50+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. By the way, they have some really great heavy songs too, and I hope you like guitar solos, as well as bass and drum solos, like I do, because they have them too. 🦊🤘
