The pretentiousness of the rock community pisses me off. I'm a rock fan myself, I love bands like Radiohead, The Smiths, The Clash, Joy division, Stone Roses, The Beatles, Oasis etc. But the idea that every genre of music is superficial unless it has a guitar in it is ridiculous. What makes Lou Reed a great artist and Kanye West not? Why should we take the Manic Street Preachers' political commentary anymore seriously than Kendrick Lamar?
Sorry. It just grates my ears like fingernails on a black board. I need MELODY. The majority of hip hop is just rhythm. And talking. That being said, to each his own.
Abdul Deco as a elitist myself, rap is the only genre i cannot defend as a form of music, the problem isnt much that we hate all non guitar music, but that on pop culture non guitar music is all there is, and yes we dont need to listen to it, but when it is so prevalent in society that at 2am in the morning i have random assholes blasting this shit while im trying to sleep really drives in the factor, combine that with the fact that this style is driving most rock groups to indie hell and straight up drove prog to extinction AS WELL as the fact that since this style is so basic and lazy it becomes what most people think music should be, and artists that already had enough trouble breaking the mold become the ones that people think arent making real music But you know what, if despite all that, you still think it is acceptable to consider a black dude talking about how much money he has or how many bitches he fucked is music, than maybe you deserve to listen to that shit.
Abdul Deco also "what makes lou reed a great guitarist while kanye is not?" The fact that lou reed played and has mastered the guitar for much more time than kanye
Wilson Silver I said artist. And you do realise there are lots of stereotypical parallels between both genres? I don't think any musical genre has been more associated with drugs and sex than rock and roll but hey it was David Bowie so that makes it fine! There are plenty of great socially conscious hip hop artists such as Kendrick, Kanye, Nas, Pac, A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy and so on. To Pimp A Butterfly incorporated jazz and imo is the definitive 2010s album that captures the bleakness of the world we live in. And that's a hip hop album that discusses race relations, racial injustice, hypocrisy, fame, materialism, guilt, suicide, ego and power. For every one Sex Pistols there are a thousand mediocre bands, this applies to all genres.
808s and heartbreaks led the way for so many rappers, it does not have one bad song on it, matter of fact I’d like to hear someone name a bad kanye song
Archie Butler the last 3 songs on Yeezus aren’t the best (bound 2 is alright though) but the rest are all amazing black skinhead, hold my liquor blood on the leaves, I’m in it are some of my favorite Kanye songs ever
While I might not appreciate his personality(though I've never met him so I can't make too many assumptions) I love his work and the impact his work has had on modern music is undeniable.
SharkBearBand have you listened to this song and original song ? And also do you know what is sampling? I highly recommend you to google about sampling.
Matt Lyons There are always going to be reactionaries who can't understand New musical innovations and trends and set an arbitrary line between "real music" and everything else. Next time someone bad mouths Kanye you might want to mention how Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Micheal Jackson, Prince and dozens of other musical luminaries are/were Kanye fans.
+Ned Gold even Thom Yorke and Noel Ghallagher are fans of his. Hell, Thom Yorke personally told him to sample one of his songs on a project group Kanye had with Pharrell and Lupe Fiasco called CRS.
aR0ttenBANANA96 That's a good point. Those two are well known for bashing other artists they don't like too so that speaks volumes. I actually hoped child rebel soldier would make an album because I really liked the couple songs they did together. The only talented artist I've heard bash him is matt Bellamy and he's a giant douche, and even he dialed it back. His freind/collaborator Rhymefest criticized his ego and some of his actions and obviously hes had issues with Jay z over the last year. But that's all personal stuff versus music stuff, it's very hard to find someone in the industry who has bad things to say about his music.
Pretty sure everyone trashing Kanye's music here has never really given him a chance and actually listened to his music. Just because you don't like his personality or antics does not mean he is not a great artist
"All Falls Down" from College Dropout along with "Power" from MBDTF and "I Love Kanye" from TLOP are among Kanye West's most self-aware & self-conscious songs in his discography...he admits to his faults/shortcomings in ways most rappers never will while still displaying a grand self-confidence like a typical rapper would. Simply amazing in my opinion!
The analysis in this video has a, "Well yeah, no shit" vibe. Not terribly insightful. And he didn't even talk about the best part of the song; at the end of the 2nd verse. "My childlike creativity, purity and honesty Is honestly being crowded by these grown thoughts Reality is catching up with me Taking my inner child, I’m fighting for custody With these responsibilities that they entrusted me ..." Polyphonic really cherry picked lyrics to support a very simplistic interpretation of this song imo
Power is a great song, but as far as kanye goes its basic as fuck. He gets through the message he wants to, but the lyricism is basic and so is the song itself.
dictionaryofwords You cut off at the best line lol. That diamond/dying man homophone for his Jesus piece was too ill. And I agree, he also should’ve mentioned the fading out echo of ‘so exciting’ to sound like ‘suicide’ which segues into the bridge section where the lyrics refer to jumping from a window in reference Donny Hathaway’s suicide death and how the only way out from fame as a black man is to go crazy and fall from the top. No coincidence Donny Hathaway also has schizophrenia which ties back in to the whole ‘21st Century Schizoid Man’ thing, and also no coincidence the whole bridge basically parallels Kanye’s ‘career suicide’ when he jumped on stage to interrupt Taylor Swift and made himself so much of a public enemy that even the president called him an asshole.
A bunch of people bashing on Kanye and saying he's not a genius. I don't care what people say, the man has critically acclaimed albums and has at least two classic albums that are highly regarded in the rap community. Like him or not, the man has praise and credibility, you can't fight that.
Taylor Swift has a bunch of accolades too, doesn't mean I have to like her. Same with kanye. Are people not allowed to have subjective experiences anymore? Just because millions of people like someone, it means my opinion is automatically wrong for not agreeing? That's bull crap.
Jake Irons I say at least two because that's the bare minimum anyone can say, College Dropout and MBDTF are undeniably classics and if anyone tries to argue that they're wrong. I personally think you can argue he has 5.
Gallzatron Taylor Swift's critical acclaim doesn't come anywhere close to Kanye's, and I'm not saying you can't not like Kanye, it's not a matter of opinion at all. The man is innovative and has pushed the genre of hip hop further, that makes him a genius, it doesn't matter if you like him or not. For instance, I'm not a huge fan of the Beatles, but for me to say that they were not geniuses and that they didn't innovate music and push music forward would be completely ignorant of me.
I think the band Yes would be an excellent topic. I know, everyone keeps saying all of us prog guys need to stop, but Yes has a very interesting history. They've had 19 different members total, 21 albums, formed 2 separate band entities at one point. there's so many things about Yes that are just not like anything else that has existed.
I have never been a hip hop or Rap fan. More of a Metal and Rock fan myself. But Kanye using a sample from King Crimson not only delights me but makes me respect the man. He is a genius with lyrics and because of his one act of putting King Crimson in this song forces me to give Hip hop a chance. Love this song to death
Runaway is great, but it's overrated imo. I'll admit the outro is the greatest motherfucking thing of all time, but hearing 9 minutes of Kanye talking about his social life isn't really that appealing. Power > Runaway
I think one thing Power did so well as a hiphop song is the audio engineering behind it. The song was so well mixed and mastered despite having so many layers of instruments playing at the same time. The song remained punchy and each instrument has clarity even after putting it through distortion effects.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there's a massive overlap between people who hate Kanye and people who hate Obama. Racists love to say black people never achieve anything and yet when they do they don't take it very well.
Amazing work! I love how you connected the imagery in the music video to Renaissance paintings and Egyptian mythology. Analysis that connects the past to the present opens our world up to a future of possibilities :)
Gallagher also discussed how Kanye West influenced album opener "Fort Knox," an ambling, psychedelic instrumental track. "On the day that Kanye released that track 'Fade,' it fuckin' blew my mind," he says. "And I go into the studio and I'm going, 'Wow, have you fuckin' heard this Kanye track?' ... I've always loved that track by him called 'Power.'" Holmes suggested he write a track like that. "And I'm like, 'What? fuckin joking, are ya? I'm no rapper.' He had the idea of, 'Let's pretend we're doing a track for Kanye and we're going to send to him.' And as it was going along, I was going, 'This is amazing. He's not getting this.' So the reason why there's no singing on it is we had this idea we were going to send it to Kanye and then [throws middle finger in air fck it. Kanye's influence has no boundaries
I remember when this video came out, the conspirationists blogs went crazy analyzing every single frame and reaching to the most stupid conclusions. But I thank them, that's how I've discovered the power of Kanye's creativity.
I mean power is great, but Kanye's best verse is on gorgeous. "penitentiary chances, the devil dances And eventually answers to the call of Autumn All of them fallin’ for the love of ballin’ Got caught with 30 rocks, the cop look like Alec Baldwin Inter century anthems based off inner city tantrums Based off the way we was branded Face it, Jerome get more time than Brandon And at the airport they check all through my bag And tell me that it’s random"
Honestly, those "rock fans" who hate kanye are the plebs of the rock world. They're the dads who only listen to stale bands like AC/DC and Nirvana. I have almost never witnessed a person who likes experimental/art rock (David Bowie, Lou Reed's various projects, radiohead, etc.) hate on an experimental artist like Kanye.
Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, etc. .... that's all they fucking know. The most boring and predictable taste in music ever. Like it came straight out of an old textbook about rock history. If they truly were open-minded enough to enjoy experimental artists such as Bowie and Reed, then they'll at least appreciate Kanye's work.
As someone who listens to mostly that type of music, and bands, I can get down with some of Kanye's older music. He's a great musician, and it's fun to listen to his songs musically.
@@davereyez4721 I listen to rock and hip hop equally and the same can also be said for a lot more hip hop fans. A lot of rappers write rock references in their lyrics that bring out their message more. However this goes over a lot of people's heads because they dont listen to the music being referenced. It's not a horrible thing. But I think everyone in all genres should be more open. It's not in one particular genre.
When kanye is "contemplating his own death" as you stated, it is also a reference to when he moved to Japan to escape society and when he recorded the song "Never See Me Again" which would have been the last song he would release before killing himself
Could you do a video on the New York Music scene in the 2000s and how bands such as The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Interpol revived music genres like Rock, Dance-Pop and how they influenced later bands like the Killers, Arctic Money’s and Franz Ferdinand ? As per usual. Another amazing video poly x
charlie hayes I feel like I saw a video (or maybe read an article) on this precise subject and it was incredible. So I definitely wouldn't mind polyphonic taking a stab at it.
Noisey had a short series on it 7 years ago but then they took that shit down. It was called Scene + Heard. Someone's gotta have that s0ss lyin' in their digital basement....
4:03 I always thought that since she has multiple sets of wings she was supposed to be a seraph. I always thought that because they symbolize light and ardor. Seeing as the song sheds new light on what it's like to be in a position of fame/power, shows his passion and enthusiasm for music, I though it was fitting.
Feel free to add on to this list of artists who have spoken positively about Kanye West's work. Lou Reed Michael Jackson Bruce Springsteen Paul McCartney Noel Gallagher Rick Rubin Liam Gallagher Elton John Elon musk Jack White Mick Jagger Herbie Hancock Marilyn Manson Adele Nas Bono Lana Del Ray Trent Renzor Axel Rose Madonna Eminem Randy Newman Drake Chris Martin Adam Levine Jay-z Sam Smith Beck Yeah "only" 21 Grammys, 3 albums on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" MBDTF, late registration, college dropout, also on Rolling Stone's the 40 most groundbreaking albums of all time - 808s & Heartbreak, and 6 multi platinum critically acclaimed albums.
His personal life is personal and what he chooses to do with it is his decision to make. Just because he's a celebrity doesn't give you the right to infringe on his right to privacy and be judgmental. Music-wise, his body of work defines him as a musician and above that an artist, not me or any other individual or group of individuals. If you can't appreciate that the general consensus is that he's one of the most influential artists of this generation to the point that Elon Musk personally nominated him for Time's Person of the Year (which he won, by the way), and to the point that he's influenced not only his peers but both generations before and after him, including some of the best artists currently out and some of the best artists of the past (anybody who can influence Paul McCartney and is called a genius by David Bowie deserves at least SOME respect, in my humble opinion), then nothing I can tell you will change your mind. Also don't rely on ad hominems because: a) they never work b) they make it clear you have no actual substance to your argument And don't make assumptions about what knowledge other people have because assumptions are rarely correct, and certainly wasn't in this case. I'm a musician.
Addis Regassa I agree that as a producer he's one of the goats. But as far as rapping goes he's not even in goat discussion. He can't touch big, pac, em etc
Boy bye. I'm the biggest Ye fan and I can attest that his rapping, though improved, is far from Big (Pun, L, or Notorious), Pac, Em, Joey Bada$$, or even the true GOAT, Na5
Black Gemstone ye isn’t an MC but his beats and overall music put him above pretty much anyone in his generation. Some of his sounds on songs with Common or Talib Kweli are truly masterful. Not only that but his early albums are among the best ever. When he called himself the most impactful artist of his generation he wasn’t lying. “Everybody feel a way about K, but at least you feel something”. Dudes made his mark
The requests on the comments are always so cliche and uninspired. If it were up to the commenters you'd only analyze overrated prog rock musicians that have already been analyzed to death. How about appreciating when he does a video on something that hasn't been done to death (like his Dead Kenedys video) instead of requesting that he does a video on your favorite band where he reiterates things everyone already knows.
Ned Gold If you can find an in-depth look at the production and nuances of Genesis' "Watcher of the Skies" or "Supper's Ready", please drop the link. Otherwise, you should step off and let people be excited about the things they find interesting
Ned Gold "prog rock is overranalyzed" Besides DSotM i only ever watched two pro rock analysis, one on a jethro tull song, another on a kc album, at most i can count 2.5 since this song samples 21st schizoid man and thats me being generous
Oliver Knox Genesis is one I haven't seen done to death. I was thinking more along the lines of Pink Floyd, Rush, Steely Dan, Yes and even King Crimson and Toto to a certain extent. If you're willing to include videos analyzing Phil Collins then i have seen a couple. I didnt mean this comment as a personal insult to anyone's interests. I just think that ive seen more than a lifetime's worth of Prog analysis videos at this point. It's gotten to the point that Im starting to see videos that analyze punk and no wave as a reaction to the excesses of Prog music as old hat. I'm not saying that Prog analysis isn't interesting or valid, just that personally I think it's more interesting for him to venture into artists and genres that are a little less well tread.
Ned Gold That's understandable. But to say that those bands are "overrated" would be, in my opinion, ridiculous. They all have their place in music history as some of the most influential, complex bands of all time. I do enjoy that Polyphonic delves into completely different genres though. And for the record, the only Phil Collins album I'd accept is A Trick of the Tail😂
Oliver Knox Yeah overrated was a bit of hyperbole on my end. I'm not a huge prog fan but I definitely like some of those bands and all of them have really revolutionary records. Even if I hated them all personally (which I dont, Im a fan) it would be ridiculous of me to claim that they had no artistic merit and didn't innovate.
Will some day people stop asking for fucking Nirvana or Radiohead videos? Like ok we all love them, but there are ENOUGH videos of them on the internet
Kanye west and kid cudi , the Lennon McCartney of our generation. Btw, I’m a big rock/metal fan but I just know how to appreciate greatness when I hear it. Kanye was right, hip hop is the new rock.
I love this channel and the work you’re doing. I’m gonna politely disagree with you on the winged woman being a phoenix. She’s a seraphim, as evidenced by her having four wings. Seraphim were supposed to be the highest order of angels that sang praise to god. I think her being a seraphim fits in more with the overall image than a phoenix does.
Also, Around the sword is a halo/crown which could represent that the closer he gets to being a God/King the closer he is to death and his own downfall. Amazing imagery in that video!!

at the end of the verse before the bridge the words "so exciting" are delayed and edited to sound like suicide before the "jumping out the window" and "this'll be a beatiful death lines"
Abdul Deco I love this comment 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Sorry. It just grates my ears like fingernails on a black board. I need MELODY. The majority of hip hop is just rhythm. And talking. That being said, to each his own.
Abdul Deco as a elitist myself, rap is the only genre i cannot defend as a form of music, the problem isnt much that we hate all non guitar music, but that on pop culture non guitar music is all there is, and yes we dont need to listen to it, but when it is so prevalent in society that at 2am in the morning i have random assholes blasting this shit while im trying to sleep really drives in the factor, combine that with the fact that this style is driving most rock groups to indie hell and straight up drove prog to extinction
AS WELL as the fact that since this style is so basic and lazy it becomes what most people think music should be, and artists that already had enough trouble breaking the mold become the ones that people think arent making real music
But you know what, if despite all that, you still think it is acceptable to consider a black dude talking about how much money he has or how many bitches he fucked is music, than maybe you deserve to listen to that shit.
Love Kanye but lift yourself while having a great instrumental might be a shout

Drunk and hot girls, and Barry bonds are the only Kanye songs I don't like

Archie Butler the last 3 songs on Yeezus aren’t the best (bound 2 is alright though) but the rest are all amazing black skinhead, hold my liquor blood on the leaves, I’m in it are some of my favorite Kanye songs ever
While I might not appreciate his personality(though I've never met him so I can't make too many assumptions) I love his work and the impact his work has had on modern music is undeniable.
I like your comment so much. His big ego overshadowed his legacy that some people didn't see how impact Kanye was to the whole music industry.
Well he is bipolar
I started listening to this song in 2021, and realising it from 2010, is shocking,
Kaney is a future artist.
There's always a generation of old farts who claim some new music isn't actually music. It's soooo original!
Well usually music needs to have a melody... or be created by the musican (cough cough samples are stealing) cough cough
SharkBearBand have you listened to this song and original song ? And also do you know what is sampling?
I highly recommend you to google about sampling.

Damn some of these comments are unwavy as hell

This video is dope af
Pretty sure everyone trashing Kanye's music here has never really given him a chance and actually listened to his music. Just because you don't like his personality or antics does not mean he is not a great artist
"All Falls Down" from College Dropout along with "Power" from MBDTF and "I Love Kanye" from TLOP are among Kanye West's most self-aware & self-conscious songs in his discography...he admits to his faults/shortcomings in ways most rappers never will while still displaying a grand self-confidence like a typical rapper would. Simply amazing in my opinion!
Even tho he got it revoked, he didn’t earn his honorary doctorate by accident. He has shaped music so many times
audio levels need to be adjusted. the music clips are way too loud compared to the dialogue
TheMutantMindframe i like it, brings out the song
Its ok
Honestly, the song Power is just mixed super loud. It's like that on the album too, so much louder than the rest of the songs.
Yes, definitely needs some mixing fix
It also brings out the blood in my ears
The analysis in this video has a, "Well yeah, no shit" vibe. Not terribly insightful. And he didn't even talk about the best part of the song; at the end of the 2nd verse.
"My childlike creativity, purity and honesty
Is honestly being crowded by these grown thoughts
Reality is catching up with me
Taking my inner child, I’m fighting for custody
With these responsibilities that they entrusted me ..."
Polyphonic really cherry picked lyrics to support a very simplistic interpretation of this song imo
Mathew Ferrari Is rap not music?
Why on earth would we agree on something that so clearly misinformed and infantile?
You're absolutely right, that line is tight as fuck
One of the greatest songs ever made
If people ever ask me why I'm a Kanye meatrider, I'll just show them this gem of a video.
same bruh
Sajid Kabir well said!
Atleast 4 classics you mean.
This is wild. I'm more than convinced that Kanye is a genius. Ye really put so much detail into one song and video. He's the GOAT fr.

Runaway > Power
Runaway is great, but it's overrated imo. I'll admit the outro is the greatest motherfucking thing of all time, but hearing 9 minutes of Kanye talking about his social life isn't really that appealing. Power > Runaway
Let's all agree my beautiful dark twisted fantasy is the grèatest album of 21st century
James Ofomah-Parry maybe, I think college dropout and to pimp a butterfly are just as good. Very close
Lost in the World/Who Will Survive >>>
Runaway> everything
I think one thing Power did so well as a hiphop song is the audio engineering behind it. The song was so well mixed and mastered despite having so many layers of instruments playing at the same time. The song remained punchy and each instrument has clarity even after putting it through distortion effects.
I dunno about lyrical genius, youll never convince me "I was the abomination of Obamas nation." is a good line
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there's a massive overlap between people who hate Kanye and people who hate Obama.
Racists love to say black people never achieve anything and yet when they do they don't take it very well.
kanye is a genius
"penitentiary chances, the devil dances
And eventually answers to the call of Autumn
All of them fallin’ for the love of ballin’
Got caught with 30 rocks, the cop look like Alec Baldwin
Inter century anthems based off inner city tantrums
Based off the way we was branded
Face it, Jerome get more time than Brandon
And at the airport they check all through my bag
And tell me that it’s random"
MATT LEINWAND Power was much bigger that gorgeous and he put this amazing message in a hit song.
Lol these hipsters always feeling like they know everything just by hearing shitty experimental artists? Lou reed? His voice gave me cancer.
MBDTF is Kwest's Magnum opus, the best hip hop project of the 21st century, and one of the best projects of all post-modern music

Landon Simpson And thats exactly what i was remembering. Thanks for reminding me of the title.
lol people still care about mediocre indie bands of the 2000's? It's a shitty genre made by losers that barely qualify as musicians.

4:03 I always thought that since she has multiple sets of wings she was supposed to be a seraph. I always thought that because they symbolize light and ardor. Saqib Munir Added the list to my comment :)
Also don't rely on ad hominems because:
a) they never work
b) they make it clear you have no actual substance to your argument
And don't make assumptions about what knowledge other people have because assumptions are rarely correct, and certainly wasn't in this case. I'm a musician.
Addis Regassa I agree that as a producer he's one of the goats. But as far as rapping goes he's not even in goat discussion. He can't touch big, pac, em etc

Could you maybe do something about Yes, King Crimson, or Tool. I'd like to see you talk about any kind of prog to be honest
Ned Gold "prog rock is overranalyzed"
Besides DSotM i only ever watched two pro rock analysis, one on a jethro tull song, another on a kc album, at most i can count 2.5 since this song samples 21st schizoid man and thats me being generous
Kanye's mind was one of the most genius to come thru this music industry, whether you like it or not, his production proves it.

Her wings appear when the dagger appears above his head. I thought of it as her protecting him.
