  • Deactivation of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) continues. The carrier was moved Saturday from Pier 2 at the Newport News Shipbuilding to her original birthplace, Dry Dock 11. Newport News employees will continue the defueling process in the dry dock under the current inactivation contract.

    The pisser (to me) is that the original Enterprise (CV-6) was allowed to be scrapped. 20 battle stars and the entire WWII history of the USN in the Pacific just flushed down the toilet. Shameful really.

      It is a shame. My father served on the Enterprise during the war in his late teens. He went on to have a full 30 year career, serving on many carriers during the 60's with Fleet Work Study Group. Yet of all the super carriers he served on, including CVN 65, you knew his pride was with CV 6. We confirmed this when we found his scrap book years after his death.

      Yes at one time she was all we had against Japan, it was the Enterprise against Japan and she won! Total disgrace scrapping her when at the end of the war we had 79 carriers!

      Agreed. The most decorated ship in the history of the US Navy, scrapped. It's beyond shameful. She should have been designated a museum ship and permanently berthed at Annapolis or some such place.

    I ate dinner aboard this vessel when I was 13 years old. That was in about 1968, when she was docked at Norfolk for refueling and such. My uncle was galley officer aboard the Enterprise. Back then, it was "CVAN-65", I presume under an old designation system. At that time it was the largest ship in the world. I still am disappointed that none of the photos from my mother's old P.O.S. camera were usable. I have a patch from the Enterprise reminding me that it was "CVAN-65" before it was "CVN-65". Hard to believe that men could build a moving object that large.

    When big E was commissioned, her first capt was a pilot on the old cv6. He kept a porthole from the ship on board in his sea cabin. I wish that were possible with the new Enterprise. So sad.

      One fo the coolest things about an aircraft carrier is that if it's nuclear you just pull up to a dock and plug into the power grid and provide power for disasters.

    • @whidbeyhiker4364

    • @dundonrl
      @dundonrl 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not so much, since the majority of the power a nuclear powered aircraft carrier makes is used to propel the ship, very little of the steam goes to generate electricity.

    A sad day for the U.S. Navy. The U.S.S. Enterprise CVN 65 was commissioned in 1961, several years ahead of Star Trek TOS. The Star Trek Enterprise was likely named after it.

      Unknown to the security officer who questioned Chekov, Chekov , himself was also the security officer of the starship Enterprise. So it was one Enterprise security officer after another. Made the scene rather funny.
