  • In this 113th installment, Jimmy gives a sight and sound tour of the Fender Squier Paranormal Series Cyclone. This unique “offset” is a bit of a mish-mash of Mustang, Strat, and Jaguar and with a short scale @24.75 is a blast to play! Candy Apple Red…Mmmm 😎

That was a really fun video Jimmy. Love that color. The candy apple red really shines. Also love those pickups. They really chime and great combinations. Each pickup sounded clear and crisp in the jam. Thanks for the review! Take care.

Just bought this guitar. Couldn’t put it down after searching for something a little smaller in scale than my bullet strat. I was never attached to my first electric even thought I picked it out. This one made a connection. It also helped that I spent weeks going into the stores trying things out and a good half an hour trying out this baby. Still trying to decide if I want to keep it or try out a jag in my price range and trade. I like the vibe so far. I just wanted to say it’s hard to find a TH-cam video longer than 20 minutes that you can follow and stay entertained by. I watched every second. Thank you for this detailed review!

Ooh 😲! Love the Paranormal series. I've got a Paranormal Telecaster that is just so cool.
A JazzCaster or TeleMaster I named Abby (with references to Young Frankenstein) for being abby-normal.
Love that you're not hung up on having to have the more expensive names. I've also got the Stage Right 15 watt amp, and I love it...
Rock on, or maybe I should say, Blues on Jimmy!!!

That's an awesome guitar Jimmy. Sounds great. When you did the unboxing I noticed that it came from Muscian's Friend retail center here in Kansas City where I live. That retail center closed down. I actually played the white version of this guitar and loved it. Versatile guitar and very comfortable to play. Fender really did a great job on the Paranormal series at a great price. I sense a Squier shootout coming up, maybe? Thanks for sharing this with us. Have a great rest of your week and weekend. That color reminds me of those Corvettes of the 70s. A real beauty and on sale? How could you resist? The bridge and middle blend of pickups had its own thing going on. Maybe a 4 Fender Squiers for February video jam coming?

Hey Jimmy - I just bought this model based in part on your review. I enjoy your laid back style and informed opinions. On Squier brands stepping up their game as of late, I wonder if Fender realized putting clearly substandard instruments in the hands of new and first time players was bad for business? Frustrated players will quit whereas players who make progress will buy second, third and fourth guitars. So even if their profit margin is less on the Squiers eventually they'll buy the Fender brands and amps to go along with them. Just a thought. Liked and subbed your channel, btw.

Hey Floyd..that’s excellent!! Congrats on your new Paranormal Cyclone. I think after this past couple of years, Fender (and many other manufacturers) are realizing a lot of things. I got one of those, too. $345 was way too cheap to pass up. It's a stunner. Even the video doesn't do it justice. The Candy Apple Red just sparkles. But I'm most surprised at the sound. It's not just a Strat in a Mustang body; it sounds different. More like an old Mustang with an extra pickup than a Strat.

I love their guitars. Just picked up (another) Affinity Strat in Metallic Blue Ice, & will be using that as a mod platform. Going to do a few things with it, & turn it into my own deal. I agree with the other comments here, it just needs a few tweeks so I replaced a few things on mine.

Can you do Kevin Shield strums (from MBV) with a trem system like this? Where you sort of sway in and out of pitch with the trem bar while simultaniously strum

    • @JimmyStewart1

Hi Mikael…thanks so much for watching and commenting. Honestly, I am not familiar with Kevin Shield, but to answer your question, I would say you could do any whammy bar style of technique with this setup. You can always adjust the trem for what you are looking for. I have a number of videos here on the channel utilizing different guitars and trems that show different techniques and trem bar use with different feels from rhythm, lead flutter to dive bomb type styles! I've really been enjoying mine and assume you have too since it always seems to be close at hand.. If you have the time I'd be curious what pick-up configurations you think are best for rhythm and bottom end. I've been jamming every weekend with a friend who plays lead and any kind of bottom to fill out the sound seems to work best. TIA. This is not short scale bud...it is 24 3/4", longer than standard Gibsons 24.5-24 3/4....how can it be short scale ?...Brian May's Red is 24 1/4" but nobody says it's short scale...if anything the tension is less on the 3/4" shorter than standard Fender neck just like a Gibson...i have the mkl Fender MIM 2003 Cyclone with single neck coil & bridge humbucker...a great guitar, even my vintage trem works perfect,re-wired,new pots, hi-fi grade 2% tolerance polypro cap, double mono input jack socket, shielded etc...i luv it ,especially being Vintage White with 4-ply Red Tortoise Shell pickguard...it's aged beutifully, both the paint and maple neck with Rosewood board...i would never sell it...got a Strat single coil on the neck & putting a good quality '59 PAF in the bridge...and strengthened the pool routing with a 200yr old solid piece of oak to add strength as pool routing was nasty & weakened the guitar & it's vintage trem system...now solid & sounds ace....a keeper after modding, better sounding than a Strat imo..

    • @JimmyStewart1

Thanks for watching and commenting Christopher…it’s a “short scale” in my opinion in comparison to the Fender normal scale of 25.5…I have a BM clone as well, and at 24” I also refer to it as a “short scale” 😎

I like the Cyclone as well…I did know the scale going in, which was one of the reasons I bought it. As you stated before, “shorter scale” guitars have less tension and feel a bit more “slinky. I use 9’s, even on my short scale instruments. I do enjoy the BM. It’s a very wide neck (I like that). Only negative is the switching can get convoluted in a “live” setting, especially if you are changing multiple times within a song…😎. I try to plan out any changes, or keep it to a minimum. So along with the Cyclone, I also have my Jaguar and Mustang hybrid in the “short scale” category…along with the BM. This gives me plenty of options…thanks again for stopping in! 🎸👍

@@JimmyStewart1 I have to be honest - during the tone demo, I had a hard time hearing the difference between the various options at times.
I am not sure if that is because
      1) they are subtle in some instances
      2) my computer speakers are "decent" but not great (I do have external speakers)
      3) I have a tin ear.
there are definitely guitars that I can hear it pretty easy (Tele style single coils, neck to bridge) so I won't say I "never" can hear it, lol.
