I have set up several shops by using scale cut outs including required in and outfeed areas. I have had everything from a 2 car garage up to a 15,000 sq foot cabinet shop. I am now retired and have a very small hobby shop. I no longer build cabinets but rather a lot of small projects and a lot f lathe work. The latest shop is an old single car garage of 11x22' it was definitely the most challenging shoot to set up. Table top heights were critical. Most of the pieces I use are only about 2' although of course there are times I have longer work. The primary tools I use are lathe, bandsaw, table saw, miter box, planer, joiner, spindle sander and stationary 6x48 belt sander, grinders for sharpening and buffing station, 1x30 belt sander, and more. I can use every tool for pieces in the 2' range without moving a single thing. Larger tools are all on wheels so easy to move if needed. It has turned out to be a very efficient one man shop. I have often advised others who may be struggling with shop layout, or I see their shop and it needs a lot of work on layout, to use a scale drawing including all tools and required workspace and the smaller the shop the more important elevations become. By paying attention to elevations it will allow you to work over the top of other tools and even to use the top of the other tools as potential work support and for outfeed. I have several of your tools and enjoy all of them.

I have a 96 sq.ft. workshop. Not much room so i built my mobile workbench to act as my out feed table to my benchsaw and table thicknesser which are also mobile. Im currently adapting my work bench so it will have a router table section.

This is awesome!! I'm building a house (they just started cutting the 1200 ft long driveway last week) and it will have a 16'x33' woodworking shop. I've been trying to use Sketchup (long learning curve) to design my shop and failing. This old school method of layout is exactly what I needed. I'll be meeting with my electrician in about a month to go over where all the electrical goes, and I kept agonizing over getting it right for my tools. Knowing I put the 240 volt outlets in the right spot, especially the one in the floor for my table saw (getting a SawStop) is important to me. Being on a slab you've only got one chance (unless I wanted to tear up the concrete) to get my floor connection done right. Thanks for putting this out, and thanks for the content of your video's. I became a subscriber about 6 months ago and love how you teach the skills you know. I did some woodworking about 15 years ago, and now that I'm retired I'm looking forward to getting back into this, and passing my knowledge on to my 8 grandkids.

i super recommend you put channels in the slab that have metal covers. then, you can string permanent wires in conduit in them, as well as extension cords.

@@alexwbakker Thanks, I never considered channels. I was looking at putting in conduit under the slab and having outlets in the floor (well actually in boxes above the floor so dust wouldn't get in them). Channels with metal covers may be a better solution, though I'd still be concerned about dust collecting in the channels.

First of all I want to thank you for putting this together... I need to make better use of my shop space, so I got your PDF "tool" to help layout your shop... It's really nice that you have a lot of common tools measured out. One critique: The floor plan grid was too light for my printer so I drew up my own on graph paper at 1/2" = 1' scale. And of course I needed to measure out the locations for doors, windows, electrical, and custom made items, so I made some cutouts for them... And after I got all that jotted down I immediately began working on rearranging my floor plan... except I'm finding out it's a floor "pain"... LOL. What I've got for a shop area is an enclosed patio space about 12' x 22' so it's probably the size of a 1 car garage. Also the kind of DIY projects I work on aren't your typical workflows, I don't really have specific kinds of projects... it's whenever I need something made, and the shop can be idle for long periods of time too. But I love having the shop when inspiration strikes to have it ready to go and be useful! So if I am put in a category: it is weekend DIY'er.

You mentioned you were going to build a work bench. I would love it if you would take some time to explain the decisions you made with respect to overall style, height, vises, and work holding options. I am right on the cusp of building my first true woodworking bench and I find my style very similar to you with regard to the balance you strike between hand tools and power tools. There are a lot of videos out there but not many people explain why they made the decisions they made, so I can choose if it will be right for me. Love the channel, and thanks for doing what you do!

Shop setup is something that I'm constantly struggling with. The shop that I have is about 350 sq ft and already had benches with cabinets built around around 1 full wall and part of another. The other speedbump I'm hitting is the ceiling is only a little over 9 ft tall.
I'm still building my tool collection so I've had to be very creative but I'm thinking it's time to rip out the benches and cabinets to start over with something that fits me better.

I have approximately 850sq ft and finished working on the outside around a month ago. Half of the inside is uninsulated and unsheathed. Once I get that done I'll be installing a load bearing beam around 16' long where the back wall of the original workshop was. I built it in two phases because of a limited budget and time constraints. It will be open plan then with two five foot wall sections for storage cabinets and tool racks. It's my second workshop build and one thing I've learned is to put all my machines and benches on castor's. The ability to be able to move things around at will is key.

I can't seem to find the video where you were talking about the non profit you started for disabled woodworkers so figured I'd post here. I wish there was something for someone like me for that. I'm 39 and have a lot going on. Osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, my left leg has issues with blood flow so a bone called the navicular in my left foot basically died and is dissolving. But In my state and my age none of this is considered a disability. Being a woodworker for many years I'm afraid it's getting to the point I won't be able to do it much longer because of things like not having a planer or jointer and having to be on my feet for way longer than I can be to hand plane. Its sad that the tools that would allow me to actually get back to doing what I love full time are so expensive. Since my state doesn't consider any of this a disability I don't get disability. And I've seen your program and a couple others that requires paperwork that I can't get because, it's not considered a disability. Even though I can't be on my feet longer than an hour without days of debilitating pain. It just sucks. I wish there was more kind people out there or more programs that would be able to help me.

I did the best I could laying out my shop without any layout tools. You don’t have to enter your payment details. Just click submit. Plus, nothing is free right? The whole point of offering it for free is to get people to check out our store. You get a free video and a free PDF. I probably would be a pretty bad business owner if I didn’t get anything beneficial from that right?

@@katzmosestools I don't disagree with gwtting something from it but I tried that and it wouldn't let me continue without putting my billing info for name, address, etc. I'm more than happy being sent to your store, and your video was awesome. But I'm less happy putting in data like that for a print out as a software developer. I just know it shouldn't be nessesary and am making you aware I guess.

Seems I am being approached by a scammer that says I won a prize for commenting on this video. Says I won a magnetic drill and is asking me to pay $85 for the shipping.

100% real, every woodworker needs a magnetic drill to stick to the wood. 😂 Finally get rid of your drill press 😂😂

It's great to see your success and expansion but for most of us hobbyists which I assume, most of your viewers are, we are not looking for info on big shops. There are too many that do this just for TH-cam cash. Many that I follow and find informative, but they are not being truthful like 3x3, she does it strictly for TH-cam content, Stumpy has even built a second shop to keep the studio shop as a makebelieve woodworking shop but his info is also interesting the whole game is just deceitful and not what 90% of the hobbyist are looking for. Hobbyists are looking for other hobbyist and their ideas, projects, mods etc. Maybe I am wrong but I don't think so.
