Every Browncoat (Firefly fans) loves Kaylee and feels her emotions. That's one of the most beautiful things of this show, as they specifically intended it to be that way with the writing of her character, and they pulled it off so well.
I love watching a new channel reacting to "Firefly"! I get to discover it all over again, through new eyes! You've started a very short, but profound journey. I've heard this series and the movie called "Sixteen hours of pure bliss, and a lifetime of withdrawl." Welcome to the noble ranks of the Browncoats, Ma'am. Buckle up, it's gonna be one helluva ride!
I've been doing that lately, too! That's how I found this one. I laugh and cry along with every one of them every single time despite having seen those episodes countless times before. Watching people become hooked after one episode is so validating, too!
The great thing about the whole "Space Western" genre is that it is not simply a mash-up of two seemingly different genres, but actually is a very realistic depiction of what a space faring society slowly expanding out into new planets would be like. You can only bring a small amount of technology with you, so for the most part the new settlements and the pioneer planets would have to be self sufficient, so that means making your own homes, your own tools, your own food, your own clothes, etc. The original planets (here the "central planets") would be hundreds of years further along with their development and enjoy the modern technology, but the new settlements on the frontier (here "the Rim") would necessarily be relatively low-tech for the most part as they are on their own and have to make due as best they can just as it was in the Old West.
What I love about this show is that the characters are revealed and built throughout each episode. But you do have to pay attention to little details and comments. The chemistry they all have together is amazing.
Annnnnd your hooked, as we all were . Yes this is a short series, but it will take you on a roller coaster of an emotional ride, and these characters, even Jayne , will get under your skin and be with you for ever. Oh boy! Another one! I like the way you pause and reflect. That way you don’t step on the dialogue where you might miss something and it allows you to process smaller bites at a time. Did you realize you craned your neck to see inside the box after Mal kicked to top off? Made me chuckle. If your only previous knowledge of Nathan Fillion was his role as Caleb, yikes! What an evil dude. I came to the series backwards while watching Castle. (8 seasons) Rick Castle (Nathan) is a wealthy but boyish mystery writer and dad. So Captain Mal was a darker version of Nathan to me. On another note, there are several references to Firefly in Castle. So fun. One last note. Be careful drinking something while watching because some lines may cause you to choke or spit that drink right out because of laughter. 😂
Mal was testing the doctor. When told about the death, he could either run to save his sister, or double check on Kaylee. He chose Kaylee; he is a dedicated doctor. A tough test, funny, but also this was why he was invited to stay at the end.
He was also being an absolute troll, taking out the frustrations of the last couple days on Simon (who to be fair was a major source of those frustrations).
Firstly, I'm so happy you're watching this. It's a top tier Whedon show. Secondly, I love the Buffy print you have on the wall in the background - it's one of my favourites!
This might have been the best reaction to the Kaylee "death" I've seen, and I've watched a lot of reactions to this show. Hehe. Had me cracking up. Anyway welcome to the family!
Here you go everyone: this is how you make a sci-fi tv show that every single person will love! (This and Battlestar Galactica) Star Wars Disney, make notes.
The actor playing the Fed was the demon from Buffy 3x1 "Anne" and the fiance of Doyles ex wife in Angel 1x7 Bachelor Party. The Sister was the Prima Ballerina in Angels ballet episode. The Companion is known as the wife of Deadpool, the main anatgonist in the renake of the alien show "V" and also of the late seasons of Stargate SG-1.
"Serenity": Fox TV broadcast this pilot episode LAST, which is/was a headscratcher back in the early 21st century. This half season series got "bushwhacked" by Fox TV "reavers," such that I say this: Every time a TH-cam viewer falls in love with "Firefly," a Fox TV executive falls off the Nakatomi Plaza building.;) I didn't see all of "Firefly" until I bought the DVD set.
Yea...clever by a degree. Perhaps some of the best show writing in a very long time. Even if to con you, which was the entire behind the curtain moment. ;-) All the best. Cheers.
What's funny is, if you're 4 seasons through Buffy you've definitely learned that Joss Whedon isn't afraid to kill off well liked characters (RIP Jenny Calender).
When I compare this to other Whedon shows, and think how his other shows had good first season episodes and the big main plots really developed in great ways over additional years....I'm even sadder that this only got a few episodes. Because it started so great, better than the others. But the movie helps a lot.
Imagine if the information in the movie had been allowed to be expounded on and spread out over years instead of hours. This could have been the greatest show ever
Welcome to the Verse. I look forward to seeing the exact moment you become a Browncoat. Every person I've watched react to this, has that moment. Edit: Jayne was also in the final season of Angel. River was in Angel as well for an episode.
When people move to a new land as settlers, having a motorized transport of some kind is good, but a horse is better because it won't break down and need parts. What you value as a settler is food, water, shelter, and tools to survive, not gold or silver or jewels. You realized that when you are in the wilderness, whether in space or on a planet, a doctor is a valuable thing to have. Good for you. The guy who likes to murder, Jayne, is a character who is developed the most in this series, in my opinion. You will go through an entire range of emotions about how you feel about him as the series progresses. In a pinch, you want Jayne on your side.

It's set on a frontier, a frontier in space, but the society has many similarites with 'The Old West'. Hence the old and futuristic vibes. People struggling to survive any way they can in a pretty unforgiving environment.. I someone starts suddenly start speaking another language, it's Chinese (I'm not sure which Chinese language). The in-universe explanation is that the world was pretty much unified before they had to abandon Earth and a sixth of the world's population is Chinese. 21:45 'For a lowly whore' she is not a lowly whore, she is a high-class whore. 'Companion' is a very high status job in this. They have a guild, training schools and can blacklist clients. They are usually well-educated, as they mix with the elite of society. I’m not usually a fan of westerns, they just aren’t my vibe. When this show first aired I watched one episode and decided I wasn’t into it. Eventually I watched the movie “Serenity” and loved it, after that I decided to give the show another try and by episode 4 I was hooked! Such a great show! I’m so glad you’re reacting to it! 😊
"You just gotta wait" needs to be the unofficial description of this show. Everything pays off by the end. Not in the seasons Whedon had planned out, but by the end of the movie it's all wrapped up nicely.
Oh Ms Darcie, you found something amazing... and i just found you... .. OMG take this ride please!!! OMNG you are amazing!!! ... i am so glad i found you!!
Welcome new Browncoat! You'll be singing the theme song by episode 3. (and there's another song that'll get stuck in your head later on). Enjoy the ride, keep flying, and stay Shiny!
Firefly was 2002. For most of the actors, this show was the start of their fame. As one example Nathan Fillian: Castle, the Rookie, even Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog all came after.
Can you believe the Fox execs thought this pilot was too slow moving and didn't have enough action?!? The writers wrote the next episode as a new pilot over a weekend, that's the one that was aired first, this was aired at the end of the run...and a few episodes weren't aired at all. There was a change at Fox, the exec that brought the show in was replaced by one that apparently didn't care for scifi and ended up basically sabotaging the series. But on the bright side, the show didn't run long enough to get lame. Rule number 1: anybody messes with Kaylee deserves whatever karmic payback they're about to receive! Morena Baccarin (Inara, the Companion) played Deadpool's girlfriend...
I say an interview where the exec that "sabotaged" this show said she never gets credit for picking up the show. I think the cancelation of the show was due to new executives.
Jasmine and Caleb came right after thus was canceled. Alan Tudyk was in a ton. Dodgeball, A Knight's Tale, Rogue One, the chicken in Moana, Tucker & Dale v Evil Carlos Jacot (The Fed) in his Wheedonverse trifecta. Ken from Buffy 3.2 Anne. And Doyle's ex's fiance in Angel 1.6 Bechelor Party.
Oh man this is so exciting. Not only one of the best shows ever and almost everyone who watches it falls in love but also seems like a exact perfect match for you. Like another comment said, this is THE space Western. Unless you're talking about anime then it has to compete with the likes of Cowboy Bebop but both are masterpieces.
I do not have musical training, but I did hear that the music for the show was done very intently: for the crew and the overall show, lots of string sounds; because that sounds like home. When the reavers show up: more hard sounding music, to give a different vibe.
Attractive, bubbly girl. And I like your reaction style of not constantly talking over just reacting. I also like your finishing the quotes you include instead of just showing the beginning and jumping to something else. I hope you are very successful.
I would suggest you check out the show "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr." It is a 1 season western from the early 90s. Lots of action, comedy, and some sci-fi elements. It is another show that Fox cancelled way too soon.
this show failed when it aired due to major issues mentioned below but it became an instant cult classic. i still have my dvd box set floating around which ive had for decades. Alan got the role becaues when he came in to do the screen test he reached up and flicked the switches and they were like. we want him.
Ooh, a new show! Time for recs, being human UK. Also girl, your nose has the brightest rudolph highlighter on it. 4:26 Caleb, lol! sorry, coffee and westerns _are_ such a vibe that's exactly what they are 16:15 I feel bad for Jayne, like "I did all this exposition, and you're not even grateful?" is the hat and cup merch? 35:00 Lmao! 51:11 hell yea!
What good timing. About 3 hours ago I finished another reactor's watching the "Firefly/ Serenity" short series and movie and then youtube sent your video to my screen. They know what I like. I like the way you handled episode 1 so I will subscribe and join you on your short but very entertaining journey thru the series of Firefly. I noticed your positive reaction to horses, are you living in horse country or you are a horse-woman or both?
@@darcieswatching That explains your reaction. I grew up in a suburb on the edge of San Francisco Bay. I like all animals but all we had was 2 dogs, a cat and a canary. Have a good weekend.
First, this my my all time favorite show. Second, there are some things you are going to be wondering about, so here they are, without spoilers. What's with the Chinese? At the point we started colonizing other planets, the US and China were the two superpowers left on the planet. The two cultures sort of merged. It's also Joss Whedon's clever way of getting around the censors. 99% of the time they are speaking Mandarin, they are swearing. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
I only needed to catch about 45 seconds of your personality to realize I should hit subscribe. I'm paused at 01:23 to make this comment. I reserve the right to add later. lol.
I couldnt watch firefly for years, because nathan fillion as caleb hurting xander`s eye traumatized me too much. it wasnt until he played that mystery writer working with the cops on a show I cant remember the name of, that I could see him as anyone other than caleb.
Mal telling Simon that Kaylee was dead seemed a weird joke to me, as it does to a lot of viewers. I assume along with Jaynes crude behavior at the table it is meant to show that in spite of the fact this is the future with advanced technology and spaceships these are frontier people, with a coarse crude sense of humor.
I'm in the camp that believes Mal was testing Simon. Of the many reactions possible after being told that Kaylee was dead, Simon chose to immediately go to her instead of taking an action of self-preservation. Any other action Simon might have taken would not have elicited mirth from Mal and the crew. Mal wanted to know if Simon would be a valuable and/or trustworthy member of his crew and the results of the test resulted in his offer to Simon.
@@rancidcrabtree. Interesting take 👍 But the screenplay also makes a point of everyone laughing at Mal's "joke". So I think it is also characterization: it is saying crude practical jokes like this are what frontier people on the Rim find funny, and (except for Inara) Serenity's crew are frontier people. The overall theme of _Firefly_ is frontier values are better than civilized values.
Another short lived Fox show you might check out - Fastlane, with Bill Bellamy and Peter Facinelli (Carlisle Cullen😉). A lot of ridiculous action fun, California vibes, and great guest stars.
Fun series, fun reaction! Be sure to see the "Serenity" feature length movie that followed the series (not to be confused with the pilot episode by the same name). Same characters, bigger budget, closes the story reasonably well after the early cancellation of the series. I looked over your past videos, and I see that you're quite the Whedon fan, this being his fourth series that you watched. But I'm surprised that I didn't spot the original Buffy movie with Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland, and Rutger Hauer. Puh-leeeeese!
"Is this a 'Space Western'?" Yes. LITERALLY. I hear that when Joss Whedon talked to the cast, he said the NAME of the show is "Firefly". Which means ONLY the SHIP is guaranteed to survive every episode! The REST of their characters are "expendable"! So yeah, Kaylee COULD easily have died in the Pilot. (for simple shock value)
The space/western thing explained. If you can afford it you got car or whatever. A horse is almost as fast and cheaper. Ditto guns. Alliance troops and rich people have lasers or sonic blasters, but old fashioned slug throwers (regular guns) are cheaper and leave one just as dead. The network did not like this as a pilot. Episode 2 they had a week to rewrite as a pilot. Episodes 3 &4 were filmed to be pilots in an emergency Incase the network pulled that crap again.
This is not a space western. This is THE space western!
This started that whole genre

Excellent review. New subscriber here. Even rang the bell.
You won't believe this journety.
As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
Where did you find a version with subs for the Chinese?!
Yea, that shocked me. Never seen subtitles for that.
@@RebelCowboysRVs Yeah, and I find it a shame that it's that way.
Rule number 2: Whenever River says or does something "crazy," it's meaningful.
@@margretrosenberg420 absolutely!
Jasmine and Caleb came right after thus was canceled.
Alan Tudyk was in a ton. Dodgeball, A Knight's Tale, Rogue One, the chicken in Moana, Tucker & Dale v Evil
Carlos Jacot (The Fed) in his Wheedonverse trifecta.
The song you were trying to remember at the beginning is "Fireflies" by Owl City.
I do actually wonder if they're planning the same thing with the Buffy remaster, for new viewers on stream
Jayne is one of the most complex characters ever.
he's complicated, but his view on life is simple and straight forward... what's in it for me?
Welcome to team Brown Coat! You will love this show.
im SO excited!!
I wonder if Darcie has ever considered Stand up? I just love her! ❤😂
You'll be a Browncoat in no time. Welcome.
i might be already!
Ooh, a new show! Time for recs, being human UK. Also girl, your nose has the brightest rudolph highlighter on it. 4:26 Caleb, lol! sorry, coffee
and westerns _are_ such a vibe that's exactly what they are
16:15 I feel bad for Jayne, like "I did all this exposition, and you're not even grateful?"
is the hat and cup merch?
35:00 Lmao!
51:11 hell yea!
love this show, jane my fav for sure, his explination of the chain of command, mmhmm perfect sas from a roughneck
What good timing. About 3 hours ago I finished another reactor's watching the "Firefly/
Serenity" short series and movie and then youtube sent your video to my screen. They know what I like. I like the way you handled episode 1 so I will subscribe and join you on your short but very entertaining journey thru the series of Firefly. I noticed your positive reaction to horses, are you living in horse country or you are a horse-woman or both?
i grew up in the middle of nowhere on a farm lol and we had horses!
@@darcieswatching That explains your reaction. I grew up in a suburb on the edge of San Francisco Bay. I like all animals but all we had was 2 dogs, a cat and a canary. Have a good weekend.
@@geraldtodd6633 you too!! :)
I reserve the right to add later. lol.
Welcome to The Verse!
The Kaylee fake out was like Cordelia at the end of Lover's Walk.
So I think the pool has started. Let us know the episode you become a Browncoat. 😁 Oh, and we need to get you a new hat.
I couldnt watch firefly for years, because nathan fillion as caleb hurting xander`s eye traumatized me too much. it wasnt until he played that mystery writer working with the cops on a show I cant remember the name of, that I could see him as anyone other than caleb.
Castle
Mal telling Simon that Kaylee was dead seemed a weird joke to me, as it does to a lot of viewers. I assume along with Jaynes crude behavior at the table it is meant to show that in spite of the fact this is the future with advanced technology and spaceships these are frontier people, with a coarse crude sense of humor.
Some people just have a more advanced sense of humor than others.
Interesting take 👍
But the screenplay also makes a point of everyone laughing at Mal's "joke". So I think it is also characterization: it is saying crude practical jokes like this are what frontier people on the Rim find funny, and (except for Inara) Serenity's crew are frontier people. The overall theme of _Firefly_ is frontier values are better than civilized values.
Welcome to the Browncoat community❤
Not your first Whedon show death fakeout, of course. Simon may have said it best: "That man's psychotic."
Another short lived Fox show you might check out - Fastlane, with Bill Bellamy and Peter Facinelli (Carlisle Cullen😉). A lot of ridiculous action fun, California vibes, and great guest stars.
Literally the show that the dumb Fox exec cancelled Firefly for.
@@plothole181 And? The behind the scenes BS doesn't change the show unless you're a crybaby...
@@LordVolkov And the immediate fallback on calling me a crybaby is exactly what I expect from someone who recommends Fastlane.
@@plothole181 I implied anyone who let it effect their enjoyment of Fastlane is a crybaby. You called yourself one champ.
@@LordVolkov I don't think "you're" means what you think it means then.
Darcie, welcome to the Browncoats!
Should have included the "that'll be an interesting day" line.
You keep calling Shepherd Book ‘Gramps’, but you’re forgetting something this fact….He Never Married…
i giggle every time lol
"Is this a 'Space Western'?"
Yes.
10:28
HEAVY Nodding..
You questioned having horses, in colonization, horses make more horses, cars make industries
He's a bad man.
