In this extreme kitchen makeover, I completely transform my small rental kitchen from a dark hole in the wall with no natural light to a cozy boho dream with the cutest vintage details, all on a very tight budget.
All of this happened because my kitchen was flooded by my upstairs neighbor's sewage🙂

Question: My gf and I will be relocating to Beijing soon from Singapore and she's keen to do some home improvement/makeover. Do landlords typically allow tenants to do makeovers that includes drilling and painting?

I'm not too sure about others, but my landlord is very chill about painting/drilling holes etc, and when I was touring apartments none of the agents seemed to have had problems with tenants making small renovations. It doesn't hurt to ask, and worst comes to the worst you can always hire someone on 58.com to restore the apartment to its original condition - it won't cost much.

Hi, I was just hopping through looking for some small space ideas~ and you really have so many good ones!
For the window to nowhere, if you want to utilize that space, you can get suspension shelves to display small items and to cover the window you can get decorative/privacy film. That way the non-functioning window at least won't eat up some valuable real estate.

I would clean out the light shaft and put a shade loving plant or a fake one out there! You could put a mirror out there to to bounce light around!

Another idea that you can use in order to cover the eyesore of trash outside of the window is to use frosted window film. This way you can let whatever light to come through and not have to look at the trash outside. Hope this helps.

Nice makeover. If you're afraid to bake start with easy recipe like cookies or cheesecake. I can bake but not decorate, however my cakes are all delicious. I love your fridge.
I love your cute kitchen! You did such a good job I actually wish you can come decorate and organize mine. It’s not quite as small as your but it’s ugly as hell, and I can’t seem to get it out together so it functional and looks good too. It’s just ugly
OMG, I haven't seen a microwave with knobs like those since 1980 when they first were available for homes here in Los Angeles!!! LOL, my then boyfriend got one and was so excited he could make microwave mac'n'cheese in "just 10 minutes" until I told him I could do that on stove-top in 7 min! Oh those old school days of my youth!

sewage in the kitchen sounds like a nightmare so you're defo stronger than me. I would have had a breakdown and most definitely would have tried to get upstairs owner to front the cost of a cleaner because of the human waste. If it was regular dirty water I would have just sucked it up and cleaned it myself but I'm not touching someone else's doodoo water T_T

Move out of this apartment as soon as your lease is up! You don’t need to be where your window is on top of garbage. No way. But you and your landlord did well.
Yup....moving out as soon as the leases is up. Luckily my landlord is very kind and responsive - would have been the worst nightmare if the landlord turned out to be unreliable!
