  • In this brand new series of You Tube Video's we take a look at a few examples from the iconic German Maico Motocross bikes that dominated the world of motocross (or scrambling as it was known then) during the 1970's and early 1980's.

Thank you Chris. I enjoy your channel a lot. Helps to go back and appreciate classic mx bikes of earlier eras. You accomplish that for all of us.

The first few times I rode a Maico I was astounded by how well they turned. It seems that all I needed to do was nod your head in the direction you wanted to go and the bike read your mind. I had just gotten off a 400 Yamaha which wanted to be steered with the rear end and it took some serious concentration to adjust to the Maico..

I think in the 1970s all european Motorcycle Brands came under pressure by japenese imports and many went out of bussines in the 1980s.
The 1981 Maico 490 still sold like hotcake but it seems that this success was wasted by 1982 quality issues and warranty expenses and Maico went bancrupt in 1983 :(
to be fair: Maico never was a huge company but more like a family enterprise manufacturing Motorcycles that were top-notch at the time.
