This game really proves the people over at F95-Zone so wrong that an increase in file size = a better and more interesting game/update huh? I love it!😭😭
Custom engine designed for your game can really streamline filesize, whereas if you use something like Unity or UE you already need to deal with some inherent unoptimized filler data and engine features which will be useless for the devs purposes you'd actively have to strip out which most devs aren't skilled enough to do (which isn't a slight on the devs, the entire point of engines of Unity or UE are to give devs the starting point of getting to the game dev instead of needing to also develop an engine from scrap).
Not to mention compression, which is an artform that has been slightly lost these days.
(Seen some indies slowly learn it, like seeing some of my games in my library have updates that literally cut their filesize to 1/4 of their original size simply because the devs discovered how to do it, perhaps not that good documentation on such things out there in the wild)
I wouldn't even mention the filesize. The only thing the filesize does is put almost every other game to shame for not looking this good. Filesize clearly doesn't mean a damn, as this game is demonstrating.
@@nathane5287 The custom engine definitely helps but it's also due to how much of the design is shaders instead of graphics so a lot of the prettiness is your computer making it in real time as opposed to just drawing images to the screen
I was very skeptical of a TH-camr marketed and produced game, but this game is really great. Billy Basso seriously made one of the best MetroidVania’s I’ve played, that isn’t the namesake of the genre.
Dunkey's idea to back mostly finished indie projects is kind of genius. There are so many diamonds in the rough on steam that would absolutely blow up if someone put eyes on them.
TH-camrs and streamers do this all the time without direct compensation, but Dunkey managed to monetize and leverage his audience to make some serious cash.
@@randomatorPHDyeah, your 100% correct. I would have never found this game if Dunkey never said anything about it or published. I’m on board with bigmode for sure. I also found Stars Of Providence through BigMode/Dunkey. Which is also really good.
I would stay wary of the idea still. Even if for now things are smooth sailing for everyone, a situation like this could turn on its head fast. Not saying people need to flip flop immediately, but a skeptical eye wouldn't hurt in times like these.

Was a bit frustrating how long it took Vinny to figure out you can just stay on the bubble to descend slowly and to not pop it, but I'll lay most of the blame on chat member for spoiling the bubble infinite jump trick, if he hadn't learned about it, he prob would have learned about staying on the bubble much faster.
yeah, everyone I've seen so far that's been spoiled on that early ends up trying to use it for everything and misses the easier/more intended routes (the dev took great pains to make practically every route POSSIBLE but there's always an easier/intended way)

@@ColinFrantz-n1u it's not about right or wrong thing, this game HAS no wrong way, the dev has literally been patching out any softlocks to allow players to find any path through. It's when you spoil things like that before its really "intended" to be known or allow someone to figure it out on their own, especialyfor someone who hasn't played the game before it leads to unknowingly just using it as the solution every time, which in pretty much everyone's case has led to them skipping some easy puzzles early in what's essentially a "training" room for a mechanic than not knowing that certain mechanics exist once they get to a later more advanced room that you can't simply cheese with it. This ends up just causing confusion and frustration on something you SHOULD know how to do at that point to even get there, and can sour the fun a little. Plus it kinda kills the fun in learning new things about your tools as you go when people blab everything about it from the start, there's a reason he asks for no spoilers.
I just don't understand such people. Like why do they have this urge to spoil thing as soon as possible? What is the psychology behind this? Is this some kinda inferiority complex and a way of showing off their knowledge/cleverness?
Honestly, at this point the people saying this are more annoying than the guy who gave the tip. I honestly wasn't even aware this mechanic wasn't intentional until everyone started blabbing about it. Felt natural. If Vinny is having fun, let him cheese.

As usual, even with indie games or indie publishers, a bunch of people credit the creation of the game to a corporation or individual who had nothing to do with it. Just like when Vinny says "Square Enix can make some great games when they want to" and I just have to sigh and roll my eyes for the devs.

Stop all saying this, I also learned the bubble jump trick first but it didn't stoped me from learning to float on bubble, this is just a vinny thing.
@@lotubenou8755I learned the bubble trick within 5 seconds, but the way he was taught about it made him think of it not as a portable platform but a spammable jump trick that needs skill. If he had a chance to slowly figure out what it did he'd almost certainly figure out it doesnt pop immediately.
Literally the first thing I did with the bubble was try the bubble jump. Vinny just tends to make assumptions about things and doesn't deviate until there is a need for that assumption to be challenged, I am certain that he thought that you couldn't stand on the bubble from the beginning.

After having 100% the achievements (but not the map), and doing the second speedrun challenge (I did the first on my initial playthrough accidentally) I can definitively say that this game is awesome. It feel like a game coming out like this should not be a once in a blue moon, but it is and I am glad this one got the attention that it deserved.
You know you're in for a good Vinny stream when 80% of the chat and comments are back-seaters crying.
The problem was that Vinny's knowledge of and early reliance of the bubble trick means he didn't learn important mechanics like riding on the bubbles. Thus he suffers through early puzzles that should be really easy because now he thinks that was the way you were supposed to do them when it actually just made them much harder. This is why you shouldn't spoil shit.
Completely agree, I played the game blind and learned how to bubble jump immediately after getting the wand, and had to refrain from abusing it because cheesing all the puzzles really takes away from the fun.
I don't know man, I instantly figured out bubble jumping by myself and I enjoyed the game regardless, and that's having realized it was an extra trick the game wasn't built around necessarily. It's not that big a deal.

Anyone who's played a metroidvania before would've figured it out quickly, and half the genre is about the fun of sequence breaking.
My favorite part was someone teaching him the bubble jump exploit and he just gets locked into failing easy puzzles as he has no idea how the bubble wand works and thinks that's the only solution

and it's not people that are insufferable, just live chat members. I watch a lot of vinny, but never on twitch or live at all. I have things to do during the day. Live chat is a grotesque concept intended to foster co-dependence and toxicity to boost engagement, and if it weren't for twitch giving guys like vinny an audience, I'd hate the streaming industry altogether. Even comment sections are nearly as bad, but at least I have time to construct an argument here. twitch chat rewards the shortest (but not necessarily concise), most reactionary idea.

well of course they could have, but that wouldn't have given their brain the happy drug, because they were subconsciously compelled to type the shit. social media is a hell of a drug (unless you've ever tried literally any drug, ofc).
and yes I took 30 minutes to write this. people should read and write longer things again. when we stop creating things, we are already dead. this game is a good creation developed and published by praise-worthy people, who cares what anybody says about it?? the fact that it's getting publicity at all makes me optimistic for the future of gaming. if you're going to be pessimistic, you can at least strive to be more unique.

Getting spoiled on an advanced mechanic is never good. I found out about infinite bubble jumps when I backtracked to the crane room, as the bubble wand let me access it. After getting past the cranes, but always failing in the room after that, I accidentally found out that you can make a new bubble while jumping from your old one. I had time to learn how the bubbles and the wand were supposed to be used in normal puzzle solving, but I obviously abused the infinite jump a lot, as it was pretty fun to reach places the "unintended" way.
I don't understand people saying it's an advanced mechanic. The literal first thing I figured out was the bubble infinite jump. I actually went through most of the game using it and had a blast. Like, it's such an obvious thing to try out.

Dunkey captured the animals and put them in the well for Billy, who was lonely and wanted some animals for his well. A heartwarming story.

Above all else going for this game for me, this game's atmosphere is *immaculate.*
Took me a bit to realize that the bubbles only pop when you jump.
It's funny to see Vinny tackle the flame I did last, first, as well as make it to the top of the bubble tunnel which I still have yet to do :^) Honestly so cool how once you get into the game proper, you can take pretty different routes to get around. I didn't even think of bubble and disc to get down to that area. I ended up using an optional item I found much later in the game to get there.

The part near 1:17:00 really highlights why I'm okay with vinny messing around, but not joel.
When joel messes around, it's him getting distracted with something, tabbing out of the game to bring up random pictures, and talking about crap I don't care about for 3-15 minutes, and then getting back to the game.. And if someone calls him out on it-.. Well, I guess we can't tell if anyone even does, because he never pays attention long enough to form a thought about it.
When vinny messes around, it's usually him just messing around in the game, either exploring a mechanic, or trying to get a glitch going.. Y'know, like actual gamer-related messing around. And when someone calls him out over it, he's chill, calm, and hits 'em with the good ol' "Bro, it's a stream of a guy playing a video game, why are you getting mad."

You know, it wasn't until Vinny brought the subject up that I realized that he never actually streamed Cave Story proper. With all the mods he played years ago, you would've thought otherwise. It'd definitely be neat to see him play the base game for its 20th anniversary, presumably the freeware version with a patch that adds in the Switch port's QoL features (should one exist).

I had no idea what to expect from this game but I like it. A lot have mentioned Cave Story but this also reminds me of VVVVVV. Love how the main objective is the exploration and the atmosphere
oh wow, exactly what I thought too. For me it felt like Cave Story, VVVVVV, and most notably, FEZ.
very Outer Wilds for me. completely different gameplay but very similar spirit of exploration and discovery.
Man I bounced off this pretty hard, I was drawn in by the atmosphere and exploration but I'm already struggling with the platforming and dying and I can tell with the items its only going to get crazier haha. Cool game though.
If you're seeing him do the bubble trick to infinitely jump, that isn't necessary at all, just a hidden thing. Everything is intended to be done using one bubble as a platform

I don’t think I’ve ever paid full price for a game on my Switch, and only paid over 50% on a few games, all big first-party ones… but it looks dope, and I wouldn’t mind supporting a small “studio.”

This is quite possibly one of my favorite games ever made. There's no game that has made me feel as much sense of wonder and exploration as this one. This feels like how people describe first playing BOTW to feel like, except this game has no dialogue, extremely simple controls, and nothing telling you ANYTHING to do. You figure everything in this game out from sheer intuition. There's not even a single tutorial. And I think what really makes the game is how there's not a single loading screen in the entire game. It's all one seamless world. It feels unreal, unlike anything I've ever played before. It's incredible.
I’ll admit I loved this game but I will say it’s hard for me to understand some of the super high praise behind it. That being said, it’s still a pretty great puzzle game!
Play Enviromental Station Alpha, and Fez, and Rainworld, and super metroid :)

It's down to how many games like this you've played before. going left on the first screen is a super common secret, so once you're leftpilled you always try it first!

Me too 🙂. They share the minimalistic and ambience exploration experience.
I love knytt stories. It's like mario maker before mario maker. Though... Don't play TVA Adventure. I personally played through the entire thing, it will grind your mind into paste. Even with a detailed map, it still took me several hours to beat.

Its funny how salty people (including the mods) got about backseating, but you go back and watch Vinny play Outer Wilds and mods like DaveKap are practically steering for him during the late game and DLC
I dont watch vinesauce very often he is someone who needs the backseating usually? I actually think with some gamers they get a better experience with a lot of help and backseating but with others it honestly just hampers their fun and enjoyment.
@@BOBJOE-em9tp yeah really depends, Outer Wilds the backseating is probably good, Animal Well not so much, which explains why people got so salty, but then Animal Well is an actual game whereas Outer Wilds is really just a sequence of puzzles.

This game surpassed my expectations. The atmosphere and sound design are outstanding. So mystical and so pretty. Not to mention, it has lots of animals in it, and I love animals.
The game is beautiful but I find it hard to look at
You can remove the scanlines, and there's a setting to tone down the flashing lights, but it is a very specific graphical style. I've seen others say the same thing too.
