@BizCoachAustin Thanks for the nice comment Dag. Actually Makita has all three of my videos on their blog.

Excellent tutorial Allan. I picked up one of the Makita sharpeners and don't think it was used much. I had my first attempt at sharpening my Makita 2040 planer blades yesterday.
All in all went well except hard as I tried to set the angle to match my blade angle I ended up with more of a secondary bevel. It feels sharp although not sure it shaved my arm..
I followed your advice on setting the blades 1/4" stick out in the holder but it seemed that to get close enough to the stone I had to lower the carrier to the point it was hitting the stone. Thought maybe I needed to have more stick out. The other issue I had was when sliding from left to right to sharpen, the slide seemed to be pushed off the carrier when I got to the left side of the blade like it wasn't parallel to the stone
    Any ideas?

Why do you use the Norton stone rather than your DMT coarse/extra coarse stone for the initial passes?

I stumbled across this series of videos last night. They inspired me to get out my Makita blade sharpener today and sharpen the knives on my thickness planer... They've needed it for a while now but as with many powertools horsepower made up for the dullness. It's a different situation from when I use my hand planes. The thickness planer is amazingly quiet now. ;~)

Dull knives also can cause a cascade of problems with thickness planers from premature bearing wear to vibration induced alignment issues. It warmed up here in Texas this afternoon enough for me to use my Makita outside to sharpen a friends jointer knives who did a metal lathe machining favor for me. Thanks for watching and taking time to write. All the best in 2018. Allan

When I started working on the sharpening project this morning it was 1 degree fahrenheit... One of the reasons I did "inside" things today.
The knives weren't so dull as to cause any damage but they were dull enough that that I wouldn't call them sharp... especially when compared to my L-N planes and my chisels. It's all relative!

informative video. Do you use the simple green mix in the water on the Makita sharpener?

I just purchased a makita 98202 , you mention the green wheel which is more course , can you tell me what grit it is and where to buy one , thanks

Unfortunately Makita discontinued the 120 green wheel which is silicon carbide. The replaced it with a 60 grit aluminum oxide wheel. I did not show it in that series but I have been also using the 6000 grit. Amazon has all of them.

Also, for first cleaning of the blade I cant think of anything better than a fine diamond stone.

That was my first video series and I was overthinking it. I did not want to act like you only had to use diamond stones to dress the back initially. Good question.

@sarelle500gr I am a big fan of diamond stones. They last an very importantly they stay FLAT.

@sarelle500gr I have never owned a Makita power tool that has completely died. Bearings and cords seem to be all they need to last.
