The Sherwood 6" Universal Surface Grinder can take your blades from "Manky" to "Sweet!" Just ask Phoebe Everill, who takes us from setting up right through to using the Sherwood Universal Surface Grinder...
This grinder is purpose-built to sharpen jointer and planer blades up to 24in long. It works by running the 6in aluminium oxide wheel horizontally with a 375W (1/2HP) motor running at 2800RPM, and the blade carriage passing across the face of the stone.
The carriage is adjustable to suit all bevel angles for machine blades. Remove the carriage and use the included small tool jig for grinding planer blade and cabinet chisels, or attach the drill bit sharpening attachments to touch up your twist drills.
Solid cast-iron body construction with included cast-iron base for extra stability when in use. This unique machine will quickly save time and hassle by moving your sharpening service in-house.

A little tip: take the blade to the extreme end of travel and loosen up the clamp nut and let the blade fall onto the stone and tighten up that side. Now move the blade to the other extreme direction of travel and losen up the nut and drop that side of the blade to the stone and tighten. The blade will now be perfectly aligned to the stone.

I bought it the day before yesterday and I sharpened all my planer blades. It is the best sharpener you can get for planer blades.
There is some set up needed and litle practise to build of course, but it is not so bad .. :-)
I will try to sharpen some drill bits tomorow.
    Thanks .

My old boss use to have all his blades sent out to get sharpened but since I was the operator of the machine it was my job to put the new blades back in, And we called it a Buzzer not a Jointer

Should be set to the cast iron base this is the register for it, as the chrome blade clamp is not the parallel component used to track by. There is some slop in it as the hole are slightly oversized. Each time you change blades it registers onto the cast iron base part to maintain parallelism to grinder.

Sure it doesn´t burn the blade? I wouldn´t dare to use a sharpener without watercooling.

This tool is interesting but... When she started talking about how it would take hours on a wet stone to get it in shape, I was struck by the fact that the concept of course, medium, fine never occurred to her. If you have a really rough blade, you wouldn't start with a 4000 grit stone. A few strokes one a coarse stone, then go progressively finer.
It's the same with a chunk of wood or steel, you wouldn't use a smoothing plane to take a sequoia to a toothpick. You would start with a saw.
I looked on the company website for this tool they have an article called "Water stones vs wet stone grinders vs slow speed bench grinders - which is better?
" that starts with "If you’re a water-stoner, you probably spent most of the long weekend furiously rubbing your chisels back and forth on ‘old faithful’ trying to reset the edge.". NO! Using the right tool for the job would get you from "Manky" to razor sharp in 10 or 15 minutes.
Once you have properly sharpened most blades (Hand planes, chisels, etc.) touching them up should take 2-3 minutes. For longer blades I can see that this type of machine would be very nice to have, but by no means necessary and depending on your standards, it probably wouldn't produce a finished edge .

120 - 220 - 320 grit stones are available for it. I im in the process of finding finer stones for it but it might take awhile. The Makita fine grit stones will not work on it.

Why did you not dress the wheel? You are contacting the wheel on the corner between the face and the side and not getting a flat grind surface. The grind finish looks terrible and is likely not true along the length of the blade.

Just purchased this sharpener. My thoughts,
    > Unbelievably underpowered motor, stalls with minor pressure.
    > Very Chinesey quality. Too much play in the mountings to be accurate.
    > Height adjustment is totally inaccurate and unpredictable.
    > The stone supplied is only good for final dressing, not material removal such as taking a thicknesser blade down to remove chips.
    > I had to replace the stone with a 6" bench grinder stone to do blade repairs.
With enough modifications I am sure it will just do the job, but the pathetic little motor will always create significant limitations to what its potential could have been. Very expensive for a light duty toy.

I purchased 2 yesrs ago and won't use it as it as it jams and tilts when trying to adjust hieght. Contacted supplier and all they do is keep asking irrelevant questions. I am licensed carpenter joiner with 50 years experience so not my technique!!!

Haven't used mine in ages as it is just a poor quality low powered toy suited for the home hobbyists only.

Bought this after watching the video and ruined a set of 20” blades trying to get a straight edge on them… they were super sharp but curved edge to edge…
I reset the rests…. Tried shallow passes… changed positions on the wheel…. Nothing worked
Finally took a serious look at the tool rest… the fixed part is square and flat
The holder?….. not so much…. Two mm rock edge to edge and definitely the reason the knives are ruined
Not happy at all after spending near $600 AUD on this… quality of a sharpening tool should be better than this!!!

@@timbeconaus it gets worse…. I had the tool holder machined flat…. $80 well spent… however, still no joy on getting blades sorted…. After discussing with local manager (as opposed to an email…. Ever heard of 2 way rather than 1 way communication Chris?)… we spoke of a possible bad grindstone…. Another $60 for a diamond dresser…. Took off 3mm and what a difference… now it cuts !!… fixed!!! or so I thought! … the blade angle was wrong and changed across the blade….. the cause?… the single post height adjustment. There are 4 guides machined in the base with reliefs to reduce friction and for the grinding dust etc to escape… this should minimise friction enough to allow the single screw riser to lift the table up and down….. mine isn’t machined central… causing the moveable plate to bind and jam as it only has 3 machined guides and impacts across the casting surface where the 4th guide should be. As it binds it lifts the plate out of square changing the depth and angle of the cut at random…. I’m hoping this is a ‘one off’ machining fault and will chat today about a replacement … the single screw riser is an issue….it’s definitely the weak spot of an otherwise pretty solid machine…. Wondering if the Grizzly model has the same issue?
