  • Shinko 777 Heavy Duty Motorcycle Tires Almost Got Me Killed
    As most of you know I purchased these Shinko 777 tires for the Harley Davidson Ultra Classic. I can now tell you these tires almost killed me. From the start the bike bike was unstable and went into a high speed wobble on the highway. Watch the video for complete details.
    And I am not the only one who has had issues with the Shinko brand. Check out this video - • Shinko Motorcycle Tire... about his experience with a different model Shinko tire.

    Just went over to #Bikebandit.com and discovered they have removed my review because it is no longer on their website. This is my first experience with the #Shinko brand tires and it will be my last. Take my experience/info I have shared with you, read as many reviews as you can, research the brand as best as you can and then decide on your own whether or not you will buy these tires for your motorcycle. But don't say I and many others didn't warn you.
    UPdate September 2019- They did not back up their warranty. After three months of asking them to warranty or refund these tires I got nowhere. I gave up- just to much of my life energy being wasted here dealing with #Shinko and #Bikebandit and its so called warranty process.

      I have the same problem with my nomad 1500 2001 since i put shinko 777 white flanges bullshit tires made from a factory with poor quality control. I cannot ride beyond 60mph without unstable ride especcially when there is wind. I falled to pass a truck on the fast lane which never happened before with my excedra tires. Now i understand why my kawa mechanic did not want to order me last year white flange tires since he new shinko tires are poor qyality. My kawa specialist is a racing driver. These tires are like you said, NOT robust enough to fit o a heavy cruiser even if they are « HD » written on the rear. I bought them since they were the only one available on the market.. i decide to ride only to work at low speed and I forbidden my girlfriend to ride with me until I get REAL quality tires like the ones I ordered recently (metzeller 888). I live in northern Quebec province and other like me on the vulcan forum are caught with these tires. I could KILL miself If I ride a highway speed with these shinko tires. My local dealer is not willing to give me a refound since i got them in June 2022 even if I ride only 2000km with them.

      It's not. The issue plain and simple is the tires are not designed for heavier bikes. People just don't take the time to research well enough. Then make excuses for making dumb decisions instead of being accountable and doing the due diligence. Granted, they may say that they are capable of use with a bigger bike, but does not mean they will have the best performance.That is why you have to research reviews which obviously this guy did not do. If this gentleman exerted the same amount of energy into researching the tires to begin with. The same energy he put into complaining about them. We wouldn't even have this video. 🤣😂😭

  • @jakejames1977
    @jakejames1977 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Shinko tires have a balancing dot that has to be lined up with the air valve. Also air pressure is higher than what Harley Davidson recommends. Shinko 777 tires recommend 42 psi. You always set air pressure to what the tire manufacturer recommends . I have never had a problem with shinko tires. They grip awesome and give great confidence in cornering. Only draw back is I only get 5000 miles out of a rear and 8000 miles out of a front tire.

    Common in all brands across the line. Shit happens.
    Shinko bought the motorcycle tire division from Yokohama and all of their technology. As we all know, they made race tires and more. They are a good tire and millions of reviews confirm this.
    As far as death wobble goes. Often a common large size HD issue. My 81 XS1100 is always fine with the Shinko 712 and they have insane life. The bike is no small slouch either. It is a pavement wrinkler that weighs 600lbs and runs an 11 second quarter mile. They do fine.

    I agree with your review. I ride a lot, 15k to 20k every year. My current ride is an ‘02 Electra Glide. I’ve been through about half a dozen rear tires on this one since I’ve had it. My local shop talked me into running a Shinko rear tire earlier this year, to save some money and to get a faster turn around time. For the first, probably 1,500 miles or so, it was like the bike was skiing. When it was wet out, was down right terrifying. It was to the point I thought the shop messed something up during the tire change and service. After about 1,500 miles, it settled down and I didn’t have anymore problems. The bike handled just fine, including dragging the boards in the curves. I’m not going to say Shinko is a bad brand or makes bad tires, but I probably won’t run another set. Feeling unsafe on something that is already trying to kill you every time you get on it is not worth saving $80 to me.

    Great video. I wish I had seen it a week earlier. I just had this exact same experience on my Ultra with Shinko tires. Luckily, for me, the shop I purchased them from exchanged them for a more expensive tire, but my life is worth it. Like you mentioned in your video, as soon as I got on the bike and took off, I knew something wasn't right. The bike was pretty smooth at low speeds, but anything around 68 mph and up, the bike would wobble. They put two different sets of Shinko tires on before we went with a different brand.

    DON'T DO IT!!! Just put a new set of 777 hd white walls on my 05 ultra classic, great price, great looking tires. Have less than 100 miles on them. Around town, no issues (deceiving), gains your trust. Went on freeway distance ride today with some friends for labor day ride, but didnt get far, at about 75mph, bike started dancing side to side, couldnt keep it straight. IMMEDIATELY thought beginning of a death wobble, friends behind me seen it aswell, I started to slow down, regain control, and get over to take the next exit off the freeway. I've been a motorcycle rider for 27 years, and mechanic by trade. I IMMEDIATELY knew something was not right., Once stopped, other riders informed me these shinkos had a very bad reputation for this exact issue. Wish I had known. A less experienced rider might not of noticed till it was to late. This is a reoccurring issue with this tire brand, do your research. The speeds at which this tire starts to fail, will cause a crash that will seriously injure you and your passenger, and could very possibly kill you. !!!!!BUYER BEWARE!!!!! THE MONEY YOU'LL SAVE IS NOT WORTH YOUR LIFE.

As far as the Shinko still, it looks like you definitely gotten a manufacturer and quality control Bypass. I'm surprised that those made it out of Korea. I've run sing codes for a long time now and have not run across a bad tire. My point in that is not saying that what you have is good and you don't know what you're talkin about, it is that sometimes one just gets by and unfortunately you found it. I bought my 2013 fjr1300 last September from a dealer in Seattle. My only reservation was the brand new set of Shinko tires that the dealer seemed to think was a selling point. The tires now have 2500 miles on them, and the front tire has developed prominent bubbles at regular intervals on the tread at every point where the tread carries a certain pattern. The bubbles are soft to the touch and are obvious points of separation in the structure of the tire. There is also a wobble if I rest my hands on the grips rather than holding them solidly. I am having the tires replaced with A spec Pirelli Angel GT II’s next week, and you couldn’t pay me enough to trust my life to Shinko ever again. Period.

    I needed to replace back tire on my 2020 Road Glide Limited, the guy at the shop convinced me to go with Shinko's. My ride went from 1st class canyon carving, precision handling machine to a chaotic unstable slushy piece of crap.
    They claim it is for "CRUISERS" as advertised, and that is most likely true. But giving it an 84 Load Index =1102lbs is definitely inaccurate and false! In my opinion the 777 are NOT FOR HEAVY TOURING BIKES, but they are perfect for Cruisers.
    I love curves and canyons to the beaches of Southern California. After installing Shinkos my ride is now unstable unresponsive and scary. I'm willing to bet that those who disagree are riding either cruisers and much lighter bikes or older touring bikes without the heavy tour packs, or they are chill and not aggressive. Everyone rides their ride, we can all agree on that. Your video is helpful, informative and well done. Thank you.

    If you ride a Harley you shouldn’t be skimping on tires. Had shinko’s on 3 different bikes I’ve had, not any where near close to best grip, but super durable. Harleys have outdated suspension/frame setups on top of that most of them are heavy, spend the extra money on some nice Michelin’s or Dunlops.
    In other news, I’ve tried all the major tire brands currently have some Kenda Race Tires in the mail right now. So far Pirelli’s are the best grip they just don’t last long.

    Wow! That tire sure is flat. When the tire didn't feel good in the beginning, I totally would have inspected and remove it right away. I would image that you are getting push back on the warranty due to the mileage put on the tire or time since purchased... If it was good for X miles... it must not have been a "bad tire" they MIGHT be thinking. That sucks... I have purchased form BikeBandit without issue and I am sure they will get you taken care of... you might just need to push a bit. I just bought a rear Shinko SE890 for my '17 Fat Bob. Not a single issue with the worn original Dunlop I replaced at any speed, except for the nail I picked up. As soon as I left the driveway with the new tire I noticed the instability. On our local I-75 I'm trying to prevent death wobbles at 70+ mph. Literally!! I keep alittle weight in my bags (tools) in case of emergency plus lunch bag for work. So I increased preload from 2 to 3 last night before I left work, but I stayed off the highway. So I didn't really test the result completely. But it felt a bit less unstable. I'm going to click one more to 4 and see what happens. I run 40 lbs. of pressure (cold) in the rear. The tire sidewall says 42 max. I have some adjustability. I also installed the Warrior fairing with no high speed issue at all, but then I added the shortest 7" windshield for the Warrior at the same time I found the puncture. So I never got to ride at high speed with the old tire/new windshield. So that may also be a factor in assisting in the wobble aerodynamically. All my fasteners are tight including the steering head. The new tire was balanced when I installed the wheel. I lined up the axle with the right amount of tension on the belt. It would seem that I got a bad tire too. Especially with all the negative comments on Shinko brand itself. You try to save a buck or 150 where ever you can. Thanks for sharing your death defying adventure. I like you have been riding for decades and is the reason we survive such moments of alarm when the last thing you want to do is panic. While I'm saving up for a new replacement tire I'll be trying to get the potential defective one to work. I'm silly like that.

      I tried these not to save money but to do a review on them. I went into it having high hopes for these tires. But on the first ride on the highway everything went to hell from a bad tire to bad customer service to getting stuck with bad tires. Never again. Fu*k me once okay but you won't F**k me twice. Some things to check would be steering bearings, swing arm bearings, Trani bushings, wheel bearings, tire pressure and of course a bad tire as you already know. Anyhow I wish you luck and hope you get this resolved soon. be safe, ride safe, god bless.

    There's a hundred things that could have caused that wobble. First scuff them in properly. Make sure they were seated correctly with proper tire pressure and balance. Make sure the axles are running true and aren't worn. Check new tires before installing. A tire can get a flat spot from a skid on a curve. If that were a common phenomenon with the shinko tires, no one would buy them. Yes it's absolutely possible to have a bad tire, but there "could be" a lot of other factors in play.

    The Shinko's are good tires. The problem is the bike. Tires don't cause the death wobble.
    I rode a set of these tires 4k miles round trip from Ohio to South Dakota plus sight seeing with a bad bearing on the transmission
    output shaft where the sprocket bolts on. Just the play in that bearing caused the rear end of the bike to sway back and forth as
    the bike traveled over the dips on the highway at 85mph. I thought it was the Shinko Tires. But it wasn't. I stuck a prybar on the
    drive sprocket and found the problem. I ended up replacing the transmission and that solved the problem.
    If you ride your bike in a high heat area at speeds of 80mph you should change the tire every season because the high heat and cold will
    dry rot the tire internally and it will come apart.

      AND my bike swayed all over the highway when I put the shinko's on it because the transmission output shaft bearings were worn.
      The New Shinko 777 H.D. are Heavy duty Kevlar belted now. Those would be worth trying. Since all the other tires we have used lost big chunks out of the tread areas. (except the Shinko's).

    I think when you said you are not willing to accept replacement tyres, which is typically what warranty covers you for (unless Shinko offer a customer dissatisfaction money back guarantee - which I suspect it does not), you 'did your dash'. You are in effect asking for your money back instead of allowing Shinko to replace faulty tyres with good ones. Never went into a full tank slapper wobble, but enough to feel uncomfortable. Long story short I experimented with tire pressures and just decided to live with them. After about 1000 miles they finally settled down and the wobble Is now gone. Way too long of a break in period in my opinion. I tried these because the majority of reviews I read were favorable. That said, I don't think all bikes will react this way to these tires. I like the grip that the softer compound provides, and the rounder (than the Dunlops) profile makes the bike turn nice and light. I understand your dissatisfaction with Shinko Here in Denmark we are better off, as it is the dealer who must provide a guarantee. Generally 2 years for factory failure. Here the dealer has to take the fight with the manufacturer. Shinko is a Japanese company that purchased all the molds and technology from Yokohama Rubber Co. in 1998 when Yokohama got out of the motorcycle tire game. I ordered a set for my Yamaha Dragstar Classic for next season..So we have to see how they do My current tires are the Dunlop D404F. They have run 10,000km. They have been ok but are not fond of tarsnake and road stripes

    So glad you put this out! I've been dealing w/wobble since I got these early July. My mechanic keeps saying it's not the tires and checked my swing arm. It was loose. So I had him replace the swing arm bushings [and they were bad]. It made the rear better, but I still have wobble in the front. Before it was both front and rear over 60mph. Now it's mostly front over 60mph. But my bike rode perfect before these tires. Again, my mechanic swears it's not the tires and sells a lot of these w/o complaint. Now he wants to do my neck bearings. [Forks only swing over about 1/3rd before resting.] I am so fed up. I haven't been able to ride for nearly 2 mos now due to back & forth over this issue. 200 mis of shakedown riding ain't riding! I can wrench on basic things, but removing my whole faring just to get to the neck is beyond what I'm comfortable with. That's a big job due to time and I ain't happy. I've been mulling around & researching what I'm gonna do, like replacing one or both tires w/the Dunlop and Metzeler like I had before or doing the big expense of the neck bearings. Then I just came across this video explaining this same issue. Thank you!! I am now more convinced it's these damn tires! Originally I was thinking I would just do the front, but now I think I'll do both. I imagine I'll have to eat the expense of the Shinko's. But if it fixes this wobble issue, it's worth it! I'll report later after I get different tires. BTW, my bike is a '99 HD Classic w/21" spoke front & 16" spoke rear.

    Mike thanks for the video. Your Video just confirmed my Wobble front and rear. I just installed the Shinko 777HD Reflector on the back and the Shinko 777HD Front. I had the back installed on April 2020 and the Front one installed June 2020. I have just started riding the bike in August of 2020 due to a lot of repairs that took longer to do because of delays in parts shipping . I ride a 2004 Kawasaki 1500 Nomad FI. I followed the Manufacture Tire Pressures of the Bike. Front 32psi 40psi rear. This bike handled so poorly. Vulcan Forum riders say 40 front 40 rear. It never rode like this before I installed these tires. I thought I had left something loose. I pumped the Front Tire to 40psi and the shimmy or death wobble was gone at speed below 65mph, but came back at speeds above 65mph. The rear end would start swaying above 67mph like i was riding a bucking bronco. I recheck my suspension , axle tightness, and yes checked my wheel bearings before installing tires back on bike. No problem found. I increased the rear to 44psi (which is above the Shinko tire specs of 42 cold). I am able to run 75mph but above that the bike starts wobbling again, rear and front. This is my first and last of running these Shinko tires. They were cheap and now I am out $ I cant recover like you. Lesson learned. I am convinced these are defective tires. It is a possibility that the bead on the tire is not seated well in that area of the rim. Jack the bike up and take the weight of the bike off the tire then deflate the tire and then inflate it to set the bead. You might need to exceed the normal tire pressure rating to get a good bead seating. Just my 2 cents worth.

    I have had Bad Avon, Bad Duro , Bad Cheng . Have had tires cup on the tread and inverted bubbles like a belly button the size of a silver dollar . only time I have ever got wobble is when the rear axle was off by 1/8th inch or more . I had a FLT/C Ultra glide , had a 1200 chopper I built my my ex wife , Road king I ride Never get wobble After every tire I make sure I align the Axle with my swing arm. I use a stiff wire and a small o ring Ebay sell a tool for 15 bucks , Bad tires make for rough ride in curves at high speed more of a vibration I have had over 120,000 on my FLT and Im at 80,000 on my King . I have owned 17 bikes in 48 years all them get some kind of wobble at 120 to 130 mph .

      @TechnMoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never go that fast, ever, so sticking to the speed limit maybe five or ten over at brief times- never experienced a wobble on this bike. A flat spot on the treads on the front tire will cause a wobble. The rear axle being out may cause a weave. Anyhow changed tires to a different brand, everything is good again. Not to mention #shinko and #bikebandit did nothing to make this right. After three months of numerous calls and emails they just left me hanging. I am out all that money. I’m good, Shinko will never get another dime from me. Take care and ride safe

    All u have to do is before you buy a tire. Know what kinda bike your putting it on. Shinko 777 are not made for a 700-1000 pound bike. The 777 flex way to much for a heavy bike. You can tell if a tire with flex or not just go to your tire shop and put the tire on the floor standing up then push down on it to see if it flex. If it feel stiff it will do good under a loaded bike. 777 are for bikes under 600 pounds

    • @TechnMoto
      @TechnMoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      777 HD is a heavy duty bias tire. Company states- "Specifically designed for cruiser motorcycles and are available in a multitude of sizes to fit many V-Twin and metric cruiser models." Plus has nothing to do with the fact that the tire was defective. If it wasn't it would have been okay on the bike. Also many have stated the same issue with these tires on many different motorcycles. Just check out the comments here and on the internet. This tire company is no stranger to making bad/defective tires. If they backed up their product this would have been a different conversation. take care and ride safe.

    @ew5364 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You throw the entire brand under the bus because of one bad tire? So if you had the same experience with the O.E. Dunlop 404 you’d blast Dunlop? While I agree that bikebandit should have taken care of the problem, I strongly disagree that you make a video implying that Shinko almost got you killed...it could have been any brand. You should have been unbiased.

    • @TechnMoto
      @TechnMoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My case is with both companies who blatantly did not care about my well being nor did they do anything to rectify the issue. For three months I tried to warranty the tire and all they did was give me the run around so yes- they suck! Have I had issues with other brands? Yes. The difference here is they stood behind their product unlike #Shinko and #bikebandit. Not to mention all the money I spent on bad tires that was wasted. Incase you haven't noticed I'm not the only one who has issues with this brand of tire. Just read the comments and do a search. I don’t get how folks today want to sugar coat everything. Be politically correct, be unbiased, lol. Be truthful and if folks can’t handle the truth then so be it.

My Kawa specialised tech knows my bike by hearth and if I had listen to him first in 2022 I would never bought shinko tires for a heavy bagger. From his opinion shinko is purely LOW quality unreliable tires. He got to refund twice tires from other customers and he won’t ever sell this crap again. I ordered from him high quality tires at about $200 total more with which I won’t hesitate to bring my girfriend safely for a tour. Shinko: No F…Way

    sounds like a Harley Problem over a Tire Problem, Hard to see where a tire would cause a wobble, that didn't look like a manufacture defect but a STORAGE Defect, tires can get flat spots from long term storage on end, but that flat spot would cause a vibration NOT A WOBBLE, Wobbles are caused by neck bearings, Swing-arm issues, laced wheels not tight and or true or an unbalanced weight distribution, like an overly packed rear of the bike. but tires do not cause wobbles.
