Hey DV. Yeah, I did the same thing when I started. I always wanted to expand them faster than they could manage. When you are in a strong nectar flow, or if you live in the southern states, you can get away with it because they can build comb fast. My rule of thumb is if they are working on 8 of the ten frames, then I add the deep. I suspect this queen is at the end of her reign and is slowing down, that's part of the problem. I have two or three hives in this condition. Good luck!
Hey Mr. CB, Rene and Tabitha. We're goin for lots of honey, it won't quit raining though. Should have a garden update on 5/21 video. Not much going on yet - seeds just getting going. Been raining for two weeks here. lol Ready for some sunshine! Take care brother and thanks for watching and commenting.
Hey Dan! How's things in the Sippi Sticks? Should have a garden video soon, but not much going on yet. Been raining all week here. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Cool waiting for it to dry up < > where i can check the oil trays and service them YEP I AGREE check em I found another thing that really helps the hives SMOKE THE HELL OUT OF EM ON THE OUT SIDE OF THE BOX when you finish working them > It hides there scents Make a less target for SHB and Wax Moths to smell them> It last about a week> So once a week go around smoking down the hives boxes on the out side! top to bottom
we only had a few hour of sun shine then at 7 pm thunder storms rolled in : ( Looks like for the next 2 weeks RIBBIT RIBIBIT Rain is beating the hell out of my garden : (
The blue queen is nearing the end of her reign. Average queen is good for about 2.5 laying seasons depending on the length of her laying season. If she has eggs I think I might pinch her now, boost the hive with some capped brood and nurse bees and let them make a new queen from her stock. One of the beekeepers in our club showed me his method for making queens and I was amazed at how simple it is. He uses foundation less frames so when he wants to make queens he finds a frame with eggs and cuts a strip of eggs out and ties them upside down on an empty frame with bag ties and puts them in a queen less hive and in 8-9 days he has capped queen cells. They are close together so he destroys a few cutting them up and putting them in mating nucs to hatch or a hive that needs a queen. The cajun NICOT system.
Hey Private Bubba. I’ve seen videos of that. I’ve never done it yet though. Most of my frames have a plastic foundation. I’ve seen another way where you take your hive tool and notch out where the eggs are and they will pull a queen out from that spot. I’ll give her a while longer and see how it goes. I think this is her third year if she’s blue. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@JeromeBeeFarm Yep there are so many ways that we can induce bees to make queens. But as we all know if we left the girls a lone they would take of it themselves. I had a hive that I let supersede their queen this spring, she was a drone maker supreme in the end and now her daughter is laying wall to wall. I just wanted to see what kind of queen they would make. She sure is pretty in green with her big gold butt. Did I mention "I like big butts." LOL
I have 3 hives with 2017 queens. 2 were a little slow to get started but I've left them for breeding purposes. The 3rd lays up just like a brand new queen and has made several supers of honey last year. Don't care for the 3rd brood's temperament though. Your queen might just be a slow starter, may not do as well for honey, but if you like her temperament and serves a purpose I'd keep her.
I marked my queens blue in 2017, which wasn't the right color for 2017. This was a strong hive last year and made 4 frames of honey I harvested. This may be normal for a 3rd year queen on the down hill side. I'll let nature play out I suppose. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Could of boosted her with a capped frame from another hive to jump start her. More bees to cover her later eggs and larvae. Also, those bees did not seem to give her much attention when she came out of the tube. If she was a blue dot in a green year she has some years on her and may be running out.
Hey Robert, she's a 2017 queen - she's marked the wrong color blue - now green. lol I'll note that she's 3 years old. Probably on her down side of production. I'll have to keep my eye on her to make sure they superceed if she doesn't start producing more. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks for your channel. I really enjoy it. Do you have any plans on how to build the workstand you put your frames in while you work? Also, why didn't you remark your queen with a blue pen instead of the green?
Thanks Mr. Harman! I downloaded them from somewhere. It was called a Bee Mate. I can't find the plans, I think they are on a different computer. I saw some similar on pintrest - search for portable hive stand. It's made out of 1X's It's pretty handy, just got to keep it from getting wet so it doesn't fall apart. I used a green pen because that's what was in my pocket and green is for 2019. I put the blue pen away. Blue was the wrong color anyway for the year I used it because blue was the only color I had. lol I used blue in 2017, so she's on her 3rd year. Thanks for watching and commenting.
It did look like she was a bit roughed up from the experience. I'll check on her this weekend if it will ever stop raining. lol Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hey Mack. I marked her blue in 2017, which was not the right color for that year. Green is for 2019. I had green in my pocket, so that's what I used. I put in my notes so I will know.
Smoke the front entrance make em go up! Smoke them top make go down! Smoke them both confuses them make them pissed ! I never smoke the bottom always the top cause i want them to go DOWN NOT UP~ Yep didn't drop the size down! Would DEMORALIZE THEM!
Good topic
HeyJ Arnold. Yes. Always need to tend to the lesser hives. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Very well done indeed. Definitely something we need to stay on top of when our hives get a little too small. Thanks for sharing.
Hey MP. Yeah, I suspected they were pretty weak from the looks of the entrance activity. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks for the video. As a noob this year I think I may have added a second brood box too soon. Now you showed how it can be reduced. 👍

Is it better to mark a queen before or after she mated
I don’t mark them until after they are laying.

I use the Dirt Rooster school of smoke. Never saw a bee die from too much smoke. lol
Nope there to busy sucking up nectar he hee
