I was privileged to visit and attend Mass this beautiful cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in 2014. What a beautiful, spiritual place! I particularly loved the tapestries with all of the saints looking towards the sanctuary and altar. It was different than you would see in most Catholic cathedrals-tapestries instead of statues. It also appears that there were some artifacts from the previous cathedral, St. Vibiana (which had been condemned by the city after damage from the Northridge earthquake . The archbishop decided to name the new cathedral after the original name of the city-El Pueblo de nuestra Senora , Reina de Los Angeles, or the town of Our Lady, Queen of the Angels. I was expecting to hear a more familiar hymn called Lead Me Lord, but this version is lovely, too.
Holy snap, I've been to that Cathedral a few times during middle school. Didn't realize the first few seconds of pics was the Cathedral under construction.
@phlarrdboi Not sure about your reference to our lady of abundant parking spaces or why one would even say that. The cathedral has none, per se. It does have a subterranean garage that is not visible from the cathedral nor from the plaza. As to being a European, the cathedral was designed by a Spaniard, Dr. Rafael Moneo, and the tapestries and vestments are from Belgium. The altar is Turkish marble, carved in Italy. I give you it is a "different" cathedral. It looks like the box it came in.
@lustful2 It is indeed an arrangement of Wesley's anthem. Interesting, although Wesley's was pretty good before. We don't get to hear it much in the UK anymore as it's not often in the repertoire of English Cathedrals. Small church choirs do still sing it.
Did anyone notice the interesting Sanctuary Light at 1:22? What an idea that was! I like traditional as much as the next - liturgy as well as architecture, but there are some real beautiful elements. I would wager, that most people would have a different opinion in person. The key is always: how reverent is it? And that should reflect the people present in devotion.
Beautiful harmony, pathos and dynamics of "Lead Me Lord". What is the better purpose of this piece of music? Is it for Invocation or Benediction/Choral Blessing?
Oh dear. For a truly inspirational experience, do listen to the original version for alto solo, choir and organ, which is the final section of Samuel Sebastian Wesley's fine anthem of 1861, 'Praise the Lord, O my Soul'. Wesley was a master of melody and harmony, and certainly doesn't merit this kind of outdated treatment. It sounds utterly sentimental, only lacking the singing strings and electric organ to complete the parody.
That's actually not a sanctuary light. It's one of 12 bronze Dedication Candle Holders in the nave of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. They were designed and fabricated by sculptor Max DeMoss, and biblically refer to the twelve tribes of Israel and to the twelve Apostles. The candles are lighted on each anniversary of the cathedral's dedication and on the anniversary of Rome's Cathedral of St. John Lateran.
what a funny cathedral. One would say our lady of abundant parking spaces. but then i ar a european, i should be more open to the newer cultures and their ways of interpreting religious buildings.
And yet the Bible prescribes the Cherubim that adore the Ark of the Covenent, The prohibition is against trying to create a physical image of the Divine, such as the Children saw in Egypt, and replicated in the Golden Calf.
You might at least mention that the anthem was written by the great Anglican composer, S.S. Wesley. It rellay didn't need Mr, Bock to fool about with it.
Mad Max Catholics confess their sins to God through a priest, not to the Church itself. Priests are bound to never reveal what was said in confession and are automatically taken out of the priesthood (and sometimes excommunicated) if they do. (Many priests say they don't even remember what they hear because there are so many confessions.) God bless. :)

Very soothing to hear, this is asking God to lead us in the right direction, because it is only the good. God the direct us .

Beautiful reminds me when I was a young kid, Praise God💖
I have also sang it in a choir, but not quite as slowly. It is wonderful song to sing.

Someone has re-written the music! also the words too!
what's that crazy looking building across the road?
What's the secret? The lack of attribution, i.e., arranged by, choir, cathedral location, more please.
God Bless.

Where is the Cathedral???
And who still speaks Latin, because I certainly don't. Respect Vatican II.

Yes great choir, not that fond of the arrangement with all its modulations. But as to the cathedral, TERRIFIC, yes, very modern, but excellant.
