Spike was just about to describe his vocal chain during batters box but they moved onto the next question before he answered!

      What's the complete vocal chain?
It goes from the computer into the console, then through a dbx 902, then the 1176AE . On another channel, we'll have the 2-610, and a 902. It's kind of a mixture between the two… but it's mainly that 1176AE that gives it "the sound."
Karen O [Yeah Yeah Yeahs] has a very distinctive, very different voice.
Yeah… I used the same thing, same chain. Love it.
Really? The same chain as Beyonce’s. That's really fascinating.
Yeah. Obviously the EQ changes, and I do a lot of automation in the box, whether it be effects sends, different effects, stuff like that. There's a lot of automation. The EQs are automated in and out of different sections, because they need different treatments. That kind of thing definitely happens a lot in my mixes.
How do you see using it in the future?
Basically, for me, that's my vocal chain, and it's not changing. You know, I'd always been an LA-2A man. I mean, when I built the room at Olympic, over ten, eleven years ago, I went through eight LA-2As to find the one I loved. That was the big part of my vocal sound for many years. But this 1176AE Aniversary Edition, it just does something else. It just sits--it just does it for me. The way it makes vocals sit in the track, without it sounding compressed. It's just got a presence, and a punch to it, which I love.

Yeah, you guys blew this opportunity! I was excited to see 'Spike' as a guest but perhaps you should rename this episode "Herb... featuring Spike"! Holy Cow... the guy was even ASKING to spill some pertinent info and EVEN THEN you blew him off, as you were all too busy jerking around!! ... Spike SEEMED to enjoy being there so hopefully you can have him back again for a proper interview! ... Thank you for putting the show on... I just found this episode to be very frustrating.

Fiiiinally, the legend Spike Stent....and hardly any technical questions :-( Would have LOVED to have heard his vocal chain. I know it's "not about the gear" guys but I didn't learn much from this interview that I can use or try myself. A lot of incidental chit chat and patting each others back. I love what you guys do but this was a disappointing interview, especially since you all kept mentioning how important "education" is.

Painful. This was like the conversation they should have had in the green room before shooting the show. Especially with the limited amount of info and interviews from such a legend of the industry.

To everyone upset that they didn't take a lot away from this episode, I think you should watch it again. People fail to realize it is often our life skills, and broader approach that will get us by in a career, than our exact vocal chain on any given tune. The entire thing they are saying is just keep grinding, and you will get where you need to be. Humans usually overestimate the amount they can accomplish in a year, and underestimate the amount they can accomplish in ten years. I respect the fact you guys took a more philosophical approach with this episode. It is difficult to speak on the more esoteric concepts of our art, and just so you know I took tons away from this show, thank you.

Herb has good insights often, but he's dominating this one. Are you TRYING to give Changor a complex? Very little respect shown to him, it's sort of jovial bullying - good fun in the studio, but a bit much to act like that towards him on the show.
