- Producer and Mixing Engineer Mark "Spike” Stent, who received an honorary doctorate from the University of West London in 2019, gives a guest lecture on his mixing techniques.
Interviewed by Professor Simon Zagorski-Thomas, Mark Stent explores subjects from compression to reverb and how timing is important in mixing using a track produced by MA Record Production student, Andrea Succi, as an example.
Spike Stent is a legend!
Big thanks to UWL/LCM for inviting him.
So proud to be UWL graduate!
It's one thing to have technical problems with the mics, but... how do you invite a guy like that and don't have questions prepared?
For the people wanting to compare mixes
Student's Mix: 8:03
Mark's Mix: 10:59
you can hear why he gets the big bucks ;-)
Spike is amazing. Great insights.
That demo song sounds like 2014 era Ed Sheeran
That's promising, I find most upcoming producers work their way "forward in time" to catch up with today. It's pretty logical really. You have to be an excellent producer to only have like 6 months practice so to say, to sound like today. Usually, intermediate producers are a few years behind in sound, until they get sharp enough to be able to sound "today" if they want to.
Thanks you this was fantastic! 🌟👍
Thank you very much!
So good thank you for this

Pop your volume down 1 click as you change to Mike’s mix.
why is the ott after the limiter...? would that cause overs and clipping?
No if he's working on 32Bit and After he mixes, the track gets mastered too so that's is going to be always sorted.
Wish I were there in the room!
Plot twist: Steves Jones interviewed by Sting with a beard :P
They should’ve let him mix this video’s sound..
1:48:14 Someone sounds like they are dying from COVID-19 in the background 🤣😬
Not funny at all
Dumb joke
@@hapiavenue2136 @Gaga Deconstructed I wrote this comment before the pandemic really started.....There wasn't even lockdowns back then
“We have Ed Sheeran at home”
Someone needs to fix that dock
Wow, worst intro ever lol,
omg spending day and half on the mix, omg you wasted all that time, omg
? It's too long
horrible audio. Paradoxically
God this interviewer. 🤦🏻
