Wow, there’s a question from Colt Capperune in this episode. Fast forward 8 years and now he’s out here dropping gems on his own channel and making records in Nashville. I shouldn’t be surprised, though, Colt shouts out Pensado’s Place all the time! It’s cool to see the impact this show has had on upcoming producers.
Speaking of all the compressor talk at the end, in the FrankerFazeZ extension for Twitch there's a compressor that you set to up to 20:1. I hope I'm not the only one who when I first saw that was like: "That is ludicrous!" (just set it to 2:1)
Thanks for having CLA! One quick little question though: I don't quite get the reference to the Baskin Robbins Effect in Minute 00:08:21. What is this effect?
where are you located and what program do you use? if you dont mind me asking.. i am an artist as well as a producer/song writer and im looking for a mixer/engineer to assist in my new body of work. im learning day by day but i want/need my new project to have a great mix to match the songs. my first project was lacking in that area. so im definitely looking to team up and get some serious work done. itl be beneficial to everyone involved
13:08 CLA could have at least acknowledged Dave's reputation by refuting his question "how do I get that?" with some disagreement to Dave's humility in asking such a question.
12:45 Massenburg said this same thing: Don't Let The Technology Lead You. Let The Music Do The Talking. And these guys are total gear heads. Hence the secret. Music is first. Not equipment. Pharrell said this for producing. It's not which keyboards you got. It's what MUSIC do you have. People we never heard of don't suck they just make the mistake of letting the equipment lead them around.
He mentions ice cream flavours... he's clearly talking about a generalisation of a choice metaphor. I live in Scotland, I've ZERO connection to BRobbins and I simply got it from his followup comments.
Exactly. I used to solo mix everything...together? sounded like SHIT! Lol. The guy who taught me laughed so hard when I played it all together. Talk about a kick in the nuts, lmao. Lesson learned.
I really love the tip to monitor and mix at low levels. I will admit it takes self control to hold back on inching up that knob! Maybe I'll adopt his policy, but modify it with, at the end of the day, crank it an you'll be extra proud of your mix!
Matt Ten Clay Its a tip that a lot of young mixers/producers seem to not understand. It's way easier to get proper levels when your monitors are low. If you crank them, your perception of how far apart things are just becomes non existent.
CLA's lingo and references are amazing... I would LOVE to have a chat with him one day. He just spews usable wisdom using the vaguest off-the-cuff comments. Inspired!
this is kind of an uncomfortable interview...I think it's because dave and chris are such different guys...daves got this "I still suck balls" attitude...that tortured artist thing and chris has this "I'm still high from the 80s...everything rules....I rule" personality
I still think brother Tom Lord Alge has mixed the best mixed contemporary rock album of all time, Live: Throwing Copper! Absolutely superb in every way.
They are def On Something, lol.... another level of mixing. CLA is the most competitive person in the business.... remember when he bum rushed the Grammy stage for Green Day in 05-06'.... Classic. He was getting his and that was that! I admired him so much, as brash as it may have seemed to some, for his cavalier attitude.
37:48 Speaking of Rob Cavallo, he is probably the reason why I got interested in mixing / producing. Ever since I had two versions of Welcome to Paradise, 'cause I bought Kerplunk!, I was like: why does this version of the same song sound so different? So thanks Rob Cavallo. Later, still growing up, I was like: why do so little people like Nimrod. ? I actually love how it sounds, read the booklet, saw a name there: Chris Lord-Alge. Which I guess made me realise I care about how it sounds more as how "good"the album is. So thanks, CLA.
"you guys wanna use your l1, l2, l3's to make the cd loud go ahead, i'm not doing that.. Let's do it. I'm game." Dude, balls. Fucking balls. This guy is a man.
Chris is of course a legend, great engineer - incredible sound. But in my opinion no one had a greater impact on contemporary music than Max Martin. Is any chance to bring him to the show?? Please!! :)
It's really cool to stumble upon this again 8 years after CLA originally answered my question (48:50). He was absolutely right, and I'm happy to say that I'm making a great living producing and mixing records of all kinds; death metal, electro swing, country, hip hop. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Although these shows are great isn't it sad that the producers of former great bands are the stars of today and not the NEW Queen, or the NEW Police or the NEW Eagles..... There are zillions of videos on how to make boring music sound great but few on the magic and effort that it takes to write a great song. Eveyone's obsessed with how the kick sounds and not the fact that the middle eight sucks, or even worse.... where the hell IS the song! Wish some of the influential people on the internet like yourselves and Beato etc would grab some young bands, put them in a room with a McCartney or a Lynne or a Sting to show them how to craft a hit song from scratch, from idea to recording, the whole hog! Rap and hip-hop have taken over and nobody is fighting back. Shame.
Ironically, dear mixing engineers watching this, your engineering skills are measured best by how many farts do you spot happening during this whole interview. Answer: more than one
right at 50 minutes: totally agree with CLA's answer to this question regarding cross-genre mix tips. Regardless of genre the question had to do with creating "energy" in the sonic signature of a mix and the key to that is drums, anything with vocals general rule of thumb is make sure they're heard. Bring the energy out of the drum and vocal tracks and that alone will greatly improve the mix.
there's a mix man I worked with at Nyquist, called Raz Klinghoffer, and he is very cheap and his mixes are truely awesome Wish he'd made a video about his technics
Pensado rocks! So down to earth. So sharing. Ego? Not. Thanks!
Wow, this was so good, even 8 years later in 2020.
Even his voice is saturated! Very analog.
Just kidding I love him.
He got CLA Vocals surgically installed in his neck via microchip
whattt xD
i think we need NS1 here 15:34
Watching this video while doing a mix prep for CLA!! So exciting
Good show

His voice and mannerisms remind me of Will Arnett
Fantastic episode...thank you all so much for doing this.
Love this old episodes more than the new one.
Great Discussions Here, Dave is so generous with sharing his skills. Thanks!
Love his attitude. "The material is there - Go!". A terrific point. Enough with messing around with this and that, just get on with it.
"the vocals are like that fin in the ocean" lol cool vid guys learned a lot thanks very much.
So glad you produce PP Dave. Keep it up, fantastic to watch!
51:40 Colt Capperrune! Crazy how he asked this years ago and now he's had huge success, including here on TH-cam
once again a great show whit some great guys
Dave, great interview - Chris is such a great producer, thanks for sharing
This inspired me, now I’m ready to work.
THX Chris!
This and 40's episode are my favorites!
CLA Vocal plugin is so useful. lol
Really appreciate that a lot dude. i will check those out. i am new to this scene so any advice is very helpful.
Fantastic!
This interview is a thing of beauty. :-)
Thanks, guys!
CLA is purely genius
Pensado just reminds me of Dr. Steve Brule. I can just feel how awkward CLA must feel.
awesome show!
YES!!!
chris lord-alge kicks ass in this interview
Check out Nyquist studio of Raz Klinghoffer... Amazing work these guys are doing
world at a glance was the band you were thinkin' of that chris produced...

I just wanna know what y'all used to compress all the vocals from this video? Do tell.
Finally you got CLA on the show!
i enjoy this... love CLA...
Thanks for having CLA! One quick little question though: I don't quite get the reference to the Baskin Robbins Effect in Minute 00:08:21. What is this effect?

CLA is the man!
13:08 CLA could have at least acknowledged Dave's reputation by refuting his question "how do I get that?" with some disagreement to Dave's humility in asking such a question.
11 Years past and CLA never came back for that round 2.
love 28:00
To much compression for my liking all the time. But it's a thing and he has done well with it
12:45 Massenburg said this same thing: Don't Let The Technology Lead You. Let The Music Do The Talking.

pansado and jabba
holy bald guy batman!!! been a while since i have seen CLA I guess!
lol, CLA is definately all about the DRUMS !!
The guy in the middle sounds just like Tommy Lee Jones. It's uncanny at times; unsettling even.
Is CLA related to Nicolas Cage?
YO Chris' Do another line Dude!!! YOU DON'T LOOK TO STRUNG OUT DO YA ha ha
28:02
He mentions ice cream flavours... he's clearly talking about a generalisation of a choice metaphor.
I live in Scotland, I've ZERO connection to BRobbins and I simply got it from his followup comments.
Can anybody identify with the reverbs he mentioned from @22:36 onwards ? Would like the check them out. :)
Love it when the moderator cuts him off. Oh wait that's terrible. How stoned is that dude seriously.
Is it just me? Herbert seems a lil unfriendly lol
CLA VOCAAAALSSSSS
"No one is ever going to solo the vocal" - that is very very true, and boy does that philosophy save time.
Exactly. I used to solo mix everything...together? sounded like SHIT! Lol. The guy who taught me laughed so hard when I played it all together. Talk about a kick in the nuts, lmao. Lesson learned.
ever heard of remixing, acapellas
@@AboveEmAllProduction you don't mix the song for the remix
40:56 You're welcome.
Yep, that's exactly why I came back to the vid, thanks.
Legend
Chris Lord-analogy
hooly shit i been thinkin the same thing for a while!
I think he wants to kiss Pensado, he keeps puckering up. Lol
Morgan_Fucking_Freeman I laughed so hard at this

85 dBspl is the ideal level for monitoring.
CLA's lingo and references are amazing... I would LOVE to have a chat with him one day. He just spews usable wisdom using the vaguest off-the-cuff comments. Inspired!

The mix king of metaphors.
They are def On Something, lol.... another level of mixing. CLA is the most competitive person in the business.... remember when he bum rushed the Grammy stage for Green Day in 05-06'.... Classic. Best comment ever. I just watched that video cause of your comment and it made me laugh non stop lol.
CLA wave plugins fuck yeah
I think he buried his face in some of Colombia's finest marching powder before the cameras started rolling
Its seems you are correct,
37:48 Speaking of Rob Cavallo, he is probably the reason why I got interested in mixing / producing. Ever since I had two versions of Welcome to Paradise, 'cause I bought Kerplunk!, I was like: why does this version of the same song sound so different? So thanks Rob Cavallo.

Finally i saw CLA without the cap. Now I can die in peace
I wonder how many Ralph Lauren polos shirts herb owns ... it would have to be in the thousands by now 😂
Pensado is such a humble and nice guy, such a pleasure in someone that is interviewing.
I wish herb wouldn’t just say the cheesiest and most repetitive things. It’s almost like he’s not really engaging.
can you guys start upload rough mix thats not mix or master online so that we up and coming engineer can work on it and compare it to finished mix
"you guys wanna use your l1, l2, l3's to make the cd loud go ahead, i'm not doing that.. Let's do it. I'm game." Dude, balls. Fucking balls. This guy is a man.
If it's a fart, it needs some compression and eqing to make it stand out in the mix :-)
Chris is of course a legend, great engineer - incredible sound. But in my opinion no one had a greater impact on contemporary music than Max Martin. Is any chance to bring him to the show?? Please!! :)
EMT 250, EMT 246, EMT 252, Sony DRE 2000, AMS, Yamaha Rev-1, Rev-5, Lexicon 224, Briscati M7... that's the ones he mentioned ;)
It's really cool to stumble upon this again 8 years after CLA originally answered my question (48:50).
He was absolutely right, and I'm happy to say that I'm making a great living producing and mixing records of all kinds; death metal, electro swing, country, hip hop. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Good stuff, have fun!!
Good shit man!
Paul stanley looks great
Andrew Schweppes..haha
wtf..somebody farted at 15:35 😂
sorry it was me
Lol it was Chris
bro the compression ratio and attack batters box was next level.

CLA without his cap on!
It's like Superman without his cape.
I do believe this TH-cam channel is the single biggest collection of PRACTICAL modern musical/audio recording knowledge ever assembled by man.
Ironically, dear mixing engineers watching this, your engineering skills are measured best by how many farts do you spot happening during this whole interview.
Answer: more than one
CLA is a really cool dude, really enjoyed this interview.
Dave, you the man. You have taught me so much and I went to school for this too
best show ever

CLA and Ron Fair. Who's would win a sword fight of egos... length matters
I like what Herb said @ 58:15 - 58:53
Thank goodness I've been mixing at low monitor levels. Thank you Chris Lord-Alge for confirming that technique :D
Two monsters together ... so different yet
CLA actually stands for "cocaine lovers association"
I love how humble Dave is
CLA looks like Paul Stanley from KISS
14:30 classic throwback to the old JJP vid
there's a mix man I worked with at Nyquist, called Raz Klinghoffer, and he is very cheap and his mixes are truely awesome
Wish he'd made a video about his technics
Awesome CLA show and finally someone mentioned Rich Costey on this show!
I loved when Dave told Chris: Don't be humble. I was like no risks at all :)
