- The big question today was could Alinghi Red Bull racing recover from their second dismasting in time for the Preliminary Regatta which starts on Thursday. The questions were posed in the skippers' press conference and the answers confirmed a few hours later on the water.

I thought Arnaud said that the masts were a single design but it is within the rules to use less material in order to save weight, maybe the 2 new masts were lighter and as a result not strong enough, where as the legacy mast is much thicker and therefore they can be more confident that it isnt going to break

How depressing - today's results suggest that there was a reason for Ben's low-key interview the other day. Thirty-seven attempts, and it seems that the British campaign isn't going to be competitive yet again. I've been following the cup for 60 years, and I'm beginning to doubt that I'll ever see a victory. Let's hope they can develop a little more performance through the Prelims, or it's looking like Auckland all over again...

I was worried when it looked so radical compared to the other designs it was either going to be amazing or dog poop 💩 looks like we know what it is now 😅
I agree, quite depressing really. We have the advantage of being challenger of record and have all the resources, designers , F1 teams and sailors at our disposal & we are on the back foot again before we even start. Who knows where it ends but why start from this point ?
@@vwwestfaliasyncro913 We even nabbed the chief designer off Luna Rossa - but it seems that they are still well ahead. Once again we took the radical approach, and once again it seems that it isn't paying off.
Why little NZ is so much better than this, given our resources and performance engineering traditions, is hard to fathom.

They are not fully One Design’ each team can stipulate stress/ reinforcement points inside the mast. So internally they have all been strengthened at different points/positions depending on sail designs/loadings.

I think his point was: if your rig has survived an hour's sailing, it's good to go. Both broken masts were new from SS NZL

It's possible they know the cause and it's related to their modifications, mods they don't want to make public.

As I've said repeatedly the Brits are not looking great. No surprise there they've been on the back foot at every point naking bad calls with going the LEQ12 instead of a 2nd AC40 and then they had the battery fire which meant they were off the water for a few weeks. Add to that Mercedes F1 driving the development- looks and sojnds like they added bureacracy but bugger all else. Then we have Ben and Giles Scott who are both yesterdays men trying to prove that sailing the Finn the singiehander and the slowest boats in the olympics is legitimate experience for sailing the fastest boats on the planet. These guys will be going home early - probabkt the 2bd or 3rd boat to keave the AC party having burned another £100m of Jim Ratcliffes money - surely he won't want to go again????

Firstly he giving the answer- about weight rules? Then changing it would need mutch to change and in time holding it inside wheigt is not easy to make?
