Maybe cuz, in true ER nurse snarky fashion, I responded with, “No man, screw YOU bro, I’m out” when that nonsense started 🤣🤣🤣 Apparently, he met his match and was intrigued that I didn’t chase after him and that I eat all my meals in even faster than he does 😁 After 11 years, he’s still telling me to slow down and wait for him when we eat dinner 🤣🤣🤣 But he’s a wonderful guy who’s just as described: rough and tough and crabby in the outside, sweet and snuggly on the inside (but don’t tell anyone, that part is Top Secret)!

    There is one category of firefighter who doesn’t eat fast: the captain. The captain doesn’t rush for a couple of reasons. First, the crew can’t leave without him. Second, the captain stopped being excited about going to calls years ago. While you’re all amped up to get some on a fire, cut up a car, or do CPR, I’m thinking of the reports I’ll have to write afterwards and thinking “Great, more paperwork. FML.”

    And if you date a voluntary firefighter, don't expect that we will not go to a call just because we are on a date. We will get our stuff and run like our life depends on it, because someone elses may do. And don't stand in the way. Costs time, and time is the only thing we don't have when getting a call.

    • @RedT...TheOriginal.NotANumber
      @RedT...TheOriginal.NotANumber 3 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Love vollies, but ffs please try to act like a regular person when you're not on duty. (That's to volunteers in general, not you specifically, Thought Fox.) My brother was a vollie, so I say this from experience: Spending thousands of dollars to deck out your personal vehicle with flashy lights and crap, as well as buying a ton of "fire gear", listening to the scanner non-stop, and rushing to get on scene when you're not actually on shift... that crap is just obnoxious. You WILL wind up single. Even if you have a girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/husband, you'll basically be single. Just don't. Have some damned balance.

    • @thoughtfox2409
      @thoughtfox2409 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@RedT...TheOriginal.NotANumber Yeah, of course balance is important. I'm from germany, so spending thousands of euros for lights and stuff would just make my car illegal for street use xD. We don't have a "shift" system, so your always "on duty", but with 15-20 calls a year (small department) it dosn't take overhand.

    • @ThePinkBinks
      @ThePinkBinks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I can’t even imagine someone expecting you to blow off a fire over a date.

    • @RedT...TheOriginal.NotANumber
      @RedT...TheOriginal.NotANumber 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@ThePinkBinks I see it this way: I'm an EMT. If someone gets injured/starts choking/passes out right in front of me, or in my line of sight, I'm going to help even if I'm off duty. I'm "that guy" who stops for MVCs (car accidents) when emergency vehicles aren't on scene yet.
      But I don't sit and listen to a scanner, then go running if my coworkers are doing CPR on a patient 10 miles away. That's not healthy. More, it's NOT SAFE to have off-duty people running in and mucking up the scene. The person in charge already has a plan, and I ain't part of it unless I started out on the roster for the shift.
      Doubly true for Fire. There's this thing called PAR, which is basically an accountability system. If the person in command of a scene doesn't have you on the list of crew members, then you go in and get stuck in the structure and need help... you're screwed.
      Balance. If you're off-duty, live your life. Leave the work to your brothers and sisters on the clock.

    • @ThePinkBinks
      @ThePinkBinks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Red T Yeah that’s entirely what I’d expect (except for the scanner because it doesn’t work like that in my country and it’s illegal). In fact most of the things, if not all, that you dislike are not allowed in my country. I’m not sure about legality for the other things but they’re probably not legal either.
      I just find it weird that people would go on a date with a person who has an on-call life and think they could trump the on-call part especially when it’s life or death! Just seems like crazy expectations.
      Yes if they weren’t on call at the time and had permission to drink etc but if they were on-call then… no.
      I get that people do it but it does not compute with me. Different rules, different situations so different expectations maybe?

    Finally did some Googling.
    Capt. Peter Dern in Fresno. Rescued, stripped and soaked in water, then ER, then intensive care, then burn unit, finally rehab. It's been over a year and he's still struggling but he's home, alive and happy.
    Firefighters from all over raised money to help pay his bills.

    One thing I noticed when I was married; my now-ex was a volunteer firefighter, and as many fire departments experience, often had to go out on Thanksgiving and/or Christmas to a housefire. Usually the fire was caused by some man wanting to be a "manly man," and cook the turkey in his smoker, but he had no idea how it worked, nor would he read the owner's guide.
    As I heard the various accounts of those things, I realized that the Dunning-Kruger effect seems to somehow spread exponentially the more inept the holiday "cooks" are.

    This is awesome. Only wish I had seen this 2 years ago when I was dating one. People that I worked for, who had family that were firefighters warned me, but I didn't catch on.
    I should've just "gone with it". The comment in the video about shoving emotions, etc deep down in a dark place I'm sure is true. My firefighter had served in Afghanistan also.

    be nice if I could date a Firefighter since I can't be one due to my hearing -_-. I am a natural loner so them being gone a long time doesn't bother me. as it does to others. I would be happy just to be there for support, cuddles, getting stuff all laid out time-wise for them so they don't have to get it ready if they get the call or not. but I guess I'll never be able to. I always wanted to be a cop, firefighter, military, EMT, etc. But can't do any of them because of my flat feet and hearing but would be nice if I could support;/ I saw some awful shit growing up so I am not at all bothered, just frustrated I can't help. Keep up the awesome videos! Thank you so much for making these!

      There are other ways to help society and protect those you love. It is paramount to never give up. Just because a door closed in your life doesn't mean other's didn't open up. If you really desire to get the things you want in life then discover yourself (find out what you're best at, what you can do for others and then look at the things that impede you like your flat foot or bad hearing and then work and find solutions that fit you) Don't let cockiness and laziness stop you from reaching your utmost potential. You can do it!

    Well......maybe just a bit exaggerated but ok. My late husband needed to go to the ER, but we knew if we called an ambulance they'd take him to our little towns hospital. Believe me, you don't want to go there. He couldn't stand up. Almost 10 years with congestive heart failure he know literally cannot stand up. Later found out his potassium level was 7. That's really high. Muscles don't work well. I called 911 and asked for help getting him into our car so I could take him to the best hospital near us. They sent out 2 fireman. Sweet guys. One huge guy, and one small guy. Both incredible sweet, strong and understanding. Did not come off that way at all. I think they knew just how sick he really was. My husband passed 4 days later. I'll never forget what they did. Fire fighters are incredible, amazing people. Thank you for your service and bravery ❤.

    Also dating a voluntary fire fighter is a good practice before getting a baby... What ever you are planing, when ever you think you can have a nice nightsleep from 10 p.m. until a romantic sunrise...you can be sure the pager of your partner will disagree and give you a heart attack like 10 babys who are hungry, have pooped and all are teething at once....

    Well I've known women who dated firefighters, got beat up and the judge dismissed their complaint. Why? Because they're firefighters. Like cops, the judge doesn't favor the citizen, they favor the city worker. It's not about justice, it's about economics. Putting a firefighter in jail for battery will trigger an investigation into the department... etc etc. You see where I'm going with this? Money is the core of judges decisions, not justice.
