  • Welcome back for more from The Beach Boys! Today we take a deep dive into one of the least discussed and most forgotten albums of the group's career; Beach Boys Rarities!
A collection of unreleased tracks and single-only releases, Rarities tries to cover quite a few different angles with tracks covering several different albums and eras for the group across the 1960s. It's very eclectic and everything on it is available elsewhere today. Is it still worth the listen?

I grabbed this album up when it appeared at my "local" in '83. At the time, many of those tracks were a real revelation! Thanks for "shining a light" on this largely-forgotten album!

This one was fun to make! It must have been great to buy it back in '83 when it was new and (mostly) unheard. Looking forward to our collab and more great content on your channel!

Rarities was the first BB vinyl I ever bought (at Planet Records in Boston). I was hooked on collecting them from that moment on. I always loved Land Ahoy. I can't believe they left it off the Surfin' Safari album!

That's so cool! It definitely needed to be on the Surfin' Safari album. It's better than quite a few of the other tracks on there.

I had The Beach Boys’ “The Lord’s Prayer” on a Radio Station Programmers Promotional album by Capitol Records (label dated November 1969) that I found at a yard sale in the 80’s for 25 cents.

That is so cool! I recall you mentioning that before in one of my other videos. I wish I had one too.

Glad we finally got those ones in stereo too! That must have been so cool to buy it in 1983 when most of the stuff was unheard. Thanks for the great comment!

I bought this when it came out and really liked it because back in those days we really didn't get a lot o unreleased or alternate takes. Brad Elliott was their best discographer and wrote a great book, Surf's Up! Yes these tracks have come out on later comps, but at the time they certainly were rarities.

I'll have to look up Brad Elliott's book. He did a good job on the linear notes for this record. This one is still worth looking at even though most of the rarities are no longer particularly rare. It must have been an amazing buy when it was new!

The Beach Boys have never been known for their great album covers. I bought this album when it came out, and it's a good companion piece to "Beach Boys/Brian Wilson Rarities," released on Capitol in Australia in 1981. I got both albums at the same store. The Dutch version of "Bluebirds Over the Mountain" was also on the Australian album. The single version of "Cottonfields" was a new recording, not a remix, and was the first track on the U.K. release of "Sunflower." "Pamela Jean" and the B-side, "After the Game," were on the Australian album.

I've been meaning to get that "Beach Boys/Brian Wilson Rarities" release but I know it's not easy to get in the US and it's definitely not cheap. One day though...
Thanks for the correction on "Cotton Fields" as well. You're correct! I misspoke (not my first time lol)

@@betamaxblocker All the tracks on that Australian album had previously been released (except "What'd I Say," recorded live in Sydney in January 1964) but hadn't been on albums (except "Cottonfields" on the U.K. "Sunflower"). I paid about $9 for that Rarities album as an import in 1982, and it's the only copy I've ever seen. I got the other "Rarities" album at the same store when it came out in '83.

great review of the rarities album, good job as ever breaking down each track so much work you put in to each video thanks, strange how in the late 60s the beach boys where more popular here than in the us, cottenfields got to number 5 here and i love that song and bluebirds, cheers man

This was a really fun video to make! I'm glad many of those late 60s hits from Europe have managed to trickle onto different US releases in the ensuing years. Lady Lynda still doesn't have a fan following here though (much to my chagrin...) Thanks for watching!

The bluebirds dutch single was a result of a misunderstood instructions given to the record pressers in Holland, there were two mono tracks meant to be mixed down, one of them an additional track of percussion and acoustic guitar, meant to be mixed quieter than the rest of the mono master but the dutch pressers got it mixed up

I'm amazed that no one caught the mistake before the record was released and more interestingly, why it caught on so well with Dutch audiences. At least it makes for an interesting curio!

@@betamaxblocker the fact it was an international release could have been a factor in lack of oversight
