Overlooked Horror Films of the 1940s (with a Stooges bonus!)

Welcome back horror movie fans! Let's wrap up our Halloween horror movie exploration with a look at a few overlooked films of the 1940s! We start off with a supplemental piece to last week's anthology video; 1943's "Flesh & Fantasy." This supernatural trio of stores had a bizarre production history and a flimsy framing device, but some of the supernatural elements still deliver. Next, we look a...
A Trilogy of Terror: 3 Classic Horror Anthology Films

Why have one spooky story when you can have three (or more?) Today we look at three films that helped to lay the groundwork for the horror anthology film as we know it. First up, we have the progenitor of all horror anthologies, 1919's "Eerie Tales" which takes Reinhold Schunzel, Anita Berber, and horror legend Conrad Veidt through 5 macabre adventures. A combination of some groundbreaking and ...

Gary Lewis & The Playboys Albums Episode 2- A Session with Gary Lewis & The Playboys (1965)
This video is exactly what I was looking for. I'm gonna have to pass on this collection for a number of reasons though. Very informative video. Thanks! Subbed.
I ordered the Deluxe Vinyl "Sail On, Sailor"-Set today on Amazon. I hope it arrives in good shape. 🥲
It'd be nice if there was a stand-alone Carnegie Hall cd release available, not sure I want to shell out for the Sail On Sailor deluxe, though I ultimately probably will haha. As far as future video ideas, maybe do a Mono vs. Stereo comparison and why you enjoy certain songs more in mono or stereo. A bootlegs video could be fun too.
The BB album I listen the most!
A good choice!
Say, what would you consider a complete Beach Boys Live Collection on Vinyl? Would it include the "Sail On, Sailor" Set, because of the Carnegie Hall Concert included?
I would count Carnegie Hall as part of a complete live collection. It has some parts that are very unique to it and not replicated here.
I got this album at Christmas in 1973 and I remember Sloop John B.being on that album,I'm not sure if you mentioned it
I did, it's a cover that really stand out on the album. It must have been fun to get this one as a Christmas gift!
I think Carl chose to do the Bicycle Rider lyrics on Heroes and Villains because the Smile album was allegedly scheduled for release not long after this very concert album was released. I believe Carl actually mentions its coming release during the banter on this concert album
It's mentioned for their Carnegie Hall 1972 show but I don't think it gets mentioned here. But they were indeed tinkering with those songs for a potential Smile redo. It would have been interesting if that had come to fruition.
great review, my favourite live album but very close with the knebworth album both rock, cheers man
I should do a video on the Knebworth one too. That album rocks pretty hard as well!
After I purchased the Endless Summer compilation in 1974 when I was 11yrs old, I had to get their entire back catalog. I then purchased Carl & the Passions/Pet Sounds 2 LP set and The Beach Boys In Concert the next day. I love In Concert as it was the first time I heard the early singles & Pet Sounds material in stereo. Great presentation!
Glad you liked it! This album does a great job of showcasing both the oldies and the new material! Did you go out and buy Holland too?
Before the box set, the studio version of “We Got Love” was released as an iTunes bonus track to Holland, and is superior to the box set version, as it contains the original full length edit, not the shortened 2022 box set edit.
You're right! I forgot about that; thanks for reminding me!
I recently found your channel and enjoy your Beach Boys videos. You’re very informative and I love your humor at the beginning of each video. I picked up the 3 disc Sounds of Summer and am blown away at how good the 70s stuff is, I never knew! I’m hesitant to get their 2012 remasters catalog because part of me thinks they will remix everything like the Beatles did after they released their 2015 edition of Beatles 1.
Glad you like my videos! Plenty more to come! The group's 70s work is some of their best stuff! A great decade for them (not commercially though) and releases like Ten Years of Harmony help to showcase that. I know some of the 2012 stuff has already been remixed since but the 2012 ones are still prevalent on many later releases and will likely be used for years to come so you should be good to get them.
Excellent and entertaining review, as always! Great stuff and thanks for the kind "shout out." Very cool t-shirt too!
Part of the 2022 "Sail on, Sailor" clothing line! LOL Glad you liked it. Thanks for making your great video; it really helped me out!
THE weird one on Smiley Smile is definitely Fall Breaks--. Probably my favorite along with Whistle In and Good Vibrations.
That's a quirky one too, but lots of fun!
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD from 1968 I Like The Colorized Verison From 1986 When It was on WWOR-9 Back in the 1980's.
I'll have to look for that one
JAMES GLEASON was in HERE COMES MR.JORDAN as Joe Pendleton's Fight Manger, JAMES GLEASON Did in ARSENIC AND OLD LACE as Lt.Rooney from 1944.
He's great in that too! "He signed it Theodore Roosevelt!"
I Have HERE COMES MR.JORDAN 1941 on VHS in 1982 First Re-Issue But Im Still Working on Getting The First Release of This Classic on VHs in Original 1979 Clamshall by COLUMBIA PICTURES HOME ENTERTAINMENT and Also This Movie Did Remake of 1978's HEAVEN CAN WAIT Not About Boxing Mostly Football.
BURNT OFFERINGS with BETTE DAVIS and OLIVER REED from 1976, Im Selling Now in 18 Horror VHS tapes on Ebay.
THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER from 1955 it was in MGM/UA HOME VIDEO' THE GREAT BOOKS ON VIDEO SERIES.
I have that VHS too!
MONA LISA with BOB HOSKINS I Have That Movie on VHs From Early 1987 From HBO/CANNON VIDEO and MONA LISA Trailer was on NOTHING IN COMMON VHS.
THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY with BOB HOSKINS Before WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT. LONG GOOD FRIDAY Came Out on VHs and Beta From THRON/EMI VIDEO in Early 1980's.
I like Mitcham war and remembrance and the winds of war
I love the 2 novels but I have yet to see either miniseries. I need to track those down for my watchlist.
Even Bob Hope in THE GHOST BREAKERS 1940.
That's a good one too! As is the remake of "The Cat & The Canary" that he starred in.
my favorite Horror Movie From The 1940's with Danny Kaye Played Double in 1945's Musical Ghost Comedy WONDER MAN.
Danny Kaye is great in anything!
and Bob Hope Too
My Favorite with Joel McCrea in DEAD END 1937 and His Best Comedy SULLIVAN'S TRAVLES 1941.
I really like him in "The Palm Beach Story" and "Ride the High Country."
I Have SPOOK LOUDER on THREE STOOGES VOL.10 Late 1984 VHS and Beta, and DVD set of THREE STOOGES SHORTS 1943-1945 From 2008.
"But who was throwing those pies?"
Line From Three Stooges' Spook Louder 1943.
HOLD HANDS YOU LOVE BIRDS!
Hey Betamax! Horror Anthology zone! Well you know I'm here for it. Eerie Tales from 1919, man I appreciate you taking it back to the beginning of film history and anthologies. That film was basically the template for so much to come, well deserving of the attention. I've always loved the Dead of Night & Twilight Zone connections. The Dummy and Twenty Two being the major entries that come to mind. Happy Halloween! 🎃🎃🎃
Happy Halloween to you too! I'm sure you have some choice horror films lined up to celebrate! "Eerie Tales" has aged, but it's still amazing to see how many of the tropes we associate with horror anthologies started right at the very beginning of the genre. And "Dead of Night" will always be a classic! Loved your latest TZ video!
I wish we get a boxset with every short, film, cartoon, and cameo in the history of Ted Healy and The Boys/The Three Stooges
Maybe someday we will; that would be great! I would love a set that has just the feature films they did with Healy. Some of those have still never been released to home media at all.
Conrad Veidt Always Plays The Nazi Rolls Even SPY IN BLACK 1939 But I Him in CASABLANCA 1942 and another Humphery Bogart Movie He Was in Like ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT early 1942 with Young JACKIE GLEASON (Before He Got Fat)
I've never seen "All Through the Night" but I really want to! One thing you can say about Veidt, he can definitely act!
You Got The TWILIGHT ZONE DVD COLLECTION! I Have All on VHS Tapes From Columbia House From 1987-1992.
I wish I had the Blu-ray set as it has even more bells and whistles! But I love the TZ on any home media format!
Do You Own Horror/Comedy of ARSENIC AND OLD LACE 1944 with Cary Grant?
Mr. Witherfork (spoon) took it off to Happyvale Sanitarium far far away. I talked about that one in my Criterion Horror video last year; one of the all-time greats!
My Mom Loves ARSENIC AND OLD LACE 1944. It Reminds me of BOB HOPE' THEY GOT ME COVERED from 1943 From Samuel Goldwyn. Or It Remind me of DANNY KAYE: SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY 1947 From Samuel Goldwyn.
I Have ARSENIC AND OLD LACE on VHS from Early 1983 by CBS/FOX Video in Drawbox Package and DVD from 2000 by WARNER HOME VIDEO with Snapcase.
You Happy Dale Nuthouse.
Or Maybe ARSENIC AND OLD LACE Reminds of Few THREE STOOGES SHORTS like: SPOOK LOUDER 1943, IF A BODY MEETS A BODY 1945, HEALTHY<WEALTHY AND DUMB 1938, MUTTS TO YOU 1938 and A PLUMBING WE WILL GO 1940 Spread Out! (Moe)
I Have Disney Verison Too.
"Be our guest..."
I Have BEAUTY AND THE BEAST 1946 Verison on 1985 VHS Release by EMBASSY HOME ENTERTAINMENT THE CLASSIC COLLECTION in Silver Package.
Very nice! I almost bought that one at a thrift store but I passed on it. Probably a good thing because I found the Criterion DVD for dirt cheap right afterwards.
Great stuff man.😎I always feel I'm learning watching your vids. Nice collection for sure. Not seen a lot of Hitch' but love Rear Window & 39 steps. Was jealous seeing Criterion of 39 steps, don't think you can get a British release. I can watch 39 steps on repeat it's got something old school MAGICAL about it. Nice job, take it easy😀
You would think "The 39 Steps" would be easier to find in the UK than the US LOL Such a great movie! I hope my videos are both fun and educational! Glad you are enjoying them! And as October is horror movie month, I hope you like my other videos too.
Betamax Blocker.. It's been 3 months since the last Gary Lewis album review.
"She's Just My Style" review is planned for on or around November 10th. Since no one really seemed to like this one very much I figured I'd push it back until after Horror Movie Month was over. Thank you for your patience; that will be a fun one to discuss too!
The title track of Pet Sounds was originally written to be a James Bond theme and while it fits well on the record, I think its vibe and context makes it feel a little odd to hear with the other tracks.
That's true. I hadn't really thought about that. It fits in well enough that I completely forgot what it had originally been written for.
Oh, very nice. Now I discover that not only do you like The Beach Boys but you also like horror films! = Precise splendidnesss😀
Glad you like it! I always try to diversify my content to hit all of my passions. Some people don't appreciate that so I am very glad that you do.
Now that is a Hitchcock impersonation! Hey Betamax, man I can listen to you discuss Hitchcock box sets forever, especially since I was unaware so many of these were out there. I have the Masterpiece collection DVD set, but didn't know they put that on Blu as well. I discovered so many like 'Frenzy' and 'Trouble with Harry' on there which I had never watched before but fell in love with. Excellent overview!
Good evening Fever Dreamland Theater! So many great Hitchcock sets out there and not enough time or money to discuss them all. Glad to meet another Frenzy fan as well! Thanks for always leaving such great comments! Looking forward to your next video!
Back in the early 70s (maybe earlier) Pet Sounds was released as a double-album with Carl & The Passions: So Tough. A really strange combo.
It is indeed! The radio spots promoting it were pretty funny and bizarre too. Not quite sure how all of that happened.
I discovered your channel a year ago this week. I was in the ICU in a local hospital after having survived emergency surgery. Thanks for helping me get through that rough time, and keep on doing what you do - making great content! @betamaxblocker for the win!
Thanks so much! Glad I could help out! Thanks for watching and always leaving such fantastic comments!
My Favorite Hitchcock Movie is ROPE 1948 and VHS Copy of PSYCHO in 1980 by MCA VIDEOCASSETTE INC.(tape Re-print 1982)
I almost did the video on Hitchcock VHS tapes instead but opted not to. That will definitely be a video for sometime in the future!
This may sound like a dumb question but as the Leid in Hawaii tracks actually are a live rehearsal, are there actual recordings of that 1967 live Hawaii show? I really love the Sunshine Tomorrow set. Great presentation!
Glad you liked it! Not a dumb question at all! The actual Hawaii live concerts (which were intended but ultimately rejected as a live album) were recorded on 8/25 and 8/26/1967. Those went right into the archive bin. They are now all available on the 1967-Live Sunshine release. All of the Lei'd in Hawaii live in studio material was recorded in September of that year. The CD includes a reconstruction of what the live in studio album could have been and some outtakes are on the digital set. Hope that clears things up for you.
I enjoyed your analysis of The Beach Boys' . I'm the guy who put the compilation together, selected the songs, named it, wrote the notes and coordinated the packaging. Yes, I would have liked to have seen this package be more successful because musically I think it is solid, but Capitol just threw it out there without much of a push and then didn't even bother to put it on CD a couple of years later when CDs took over. All I can say is that I tried to pick the best music I could that wasn't on the first two compilations (although I HAD to use the masterpiece "Good Vibrations" again). By the way, we weren't really pushing the medley. We just threw it on there because we had it and it was fairly current to the project. It was a lot of fun work on their music because I grew up buying those singles and watching the Capitol orange and yellow swirl label go round and around on my old turntable. Thanks for remembering and caring about this long-lost classic.
Wow! This is so cool! Thanks for commenting on my video (and so sorry I almost forgot your name during filming LOL ) It is a very solid and fun collection indeed! A great way to get people into deeper cuts the band had to offer as well. A shame it never got a CD release- it has definitely earned one. Since "Good Vibrations" was only on reissue copies of "Endless Summer" makes it completely fair game. Good to know about the medley. I would have thought that was a corporate mandate. Thanks for commenting! I would be glad to know any other insights into the album that you may have!
Fantastic as always @Betamaxblocker!
Glad you like it!
I could wrong about this, the song Willd Honey ,is their Ray Manzarek R.I.P from the Doors Influence on that song. Because Bruce Johnson from beachboys plays organ in that Song.
I'm not sure- I could see Manzarek's organ playing being an influence on Johnston's though.
@@betamaxblockerthe organ solo in the wild honey track itself is definitely doors influenced, but idk about the rest of the track yeah, it seems more like a looser pop rock version of good vibrations, like if it were just a typical pop song of the era but retained all the neat instrumentation of 67 like the theremin and lush drums
Nice video, as always! I like that release, great stereo mixes and it was so good to have some selections from the Hawaii concerts but I really do not like these mixes that have been included on a lot of their releases in the last ten years, where it's backing track and backing vocals. I don't see the point. For me, it would be much more enjoyable to have a purely instrumental mix and/or a purely a cappella mix. Anyway, that's a minor gripe. 🙂
Thanks! I think those backing track/backing vocals mixes are just to help people who want to sing the lead vocal along with the song. The backing vocals help to prevent singers from losing their place. But I agree that completely instrumental or acapella mixes are much more interesting.
I bought this CD today! Loving it so far, only ever listened to the Wild Honey stereo mixes on it before.
There's quite a bit to enjoy on it! It's a really nice set with some fun surprises.
@@betamaxblocker After listening to it a few times I can say it’s my favourite of all the late 60s recent sessions! I wish Wake The World was available physically…
Good evening sir! I had Made in the USA & Beach Boys 1985!
Both great choices!
The one that stands out on Love You is "Solar System"
That's a good choice too. But it brings us wisdom!
The one song that stands out the most on Summer Days and Summer Nights is "Girl don't tell me". Everything else, no matter how weird it is, sounds like the Beach Boys. This is the only song I ever heard by them where they tried to sound like someone else.
That one is quite rightfully called "the anti-Beach Boys song" in some reviews. I think the production style works on the album though and it's never stood out too much in my eyes.
The Wild Honey sessions are greatly underappreciated.
Absolutely! There's some great stuff here!
