EDIT: Aaaaaaand, forgot a pretty massive detail. Monthly cost for maintenance is $6.99 per Relay per month. Sorry for the omission, all! Don’t edit videos while tired.

I feel like even a $100 smartphone would be a little more reliable. If you lose service, 911 is still probably available. It doesn't seem like you can actually call 911 on this though.

I've recently gotten involved with the International Radio Network, a world-wide system of hams and non-hams. They maintain a system of RF-linked and non-RF ROIP and VOIP channels. There's a lot of crosslink between the various digital amateur radio systems, and if you have either wi-fi or a cellular link, you can talk to the entire network. Well, you can talk to the parts you're authorized to talk to -- non-amateurs can't talk on the links that tie into RF repeaters, they'd need an amateur radio license to do that, and the network managers are VERY strict.
This is the next bid for amateur radio to maintain its relevance. The digital radio revolution combines VOIP technology with ham radio UHF and VHF repeaters to interconnect the repeaters over the Internet. There's very large link systems that use this for analog repeaters as well, but those are RF only and with the exception of Echolink, don't let you connect from a PC or phone. IRN on the other hand DOES let you do that. Some crosslinks use, of all things, Teamspeak 3, a gamer voice chat system, while others use Zello. If you have a local repeater that crosslinks into IRN, you can use your amateur radio walkie-talkie to get into the system, but if you aren't near a digital amateur repeater, or forgot your radio, you can use IRN from your smartphone. For kids, there may be a Zello device similar to the Relay out there that can't be used to make phone calls, I just never looked for it. At first glance, Network-Radios.com has a device by Inrico that's a barebones Android-based VOIP device that looks like a plain walkie-talkie that might serve. (network-radios.com/index.php/product/inrico-t199-3g-wifi-android-unlocked/)
They also have "Network Radios" that mimic a UHF or VHF walkie-talkie or mobile radio, but they're essentially a smart phone tricked out to look like a walkie talkie or mobile rig. And finally, there's handhelds out there that combine all three -- an Android cell phone, a UHF/VHF analog/digital walkie talkie, and a digital network ROIP/VOIP device. You can load any or all of the Android-based chat programs on it -- Echolink, Teamspeak 3, Zello, or whatever else you want to use.
There's a lot of new stuff out there, much of it free to use for the cost of your connection. Some of it requires an amateur radio license, but not all of it, and it's easy nowadays to get that license. You don't even have to learn Morse Code anymore, though there is a theory and regulations test.

Probably be used friendly for a 5 year old? Every kid is different to. Some may get it right off, but others may take sometime also.

I wonder if we can get better PPT networks with 5G, because that's designed to have low latency. Also I wonder if trying to work with T-Mobile and Sprint on their 1x HD Voice / VoLTE ( I only say slash VoLTE, because Sprint doesn't have SvLTE/ VoLTE) would make a more reliable faster close to low latency connection for those relays. I Mean i know that VoLTE is a call connection, and it's designed to be a Walkie Talkie connection. But it would still would be awesome to see it work.

@@RKingis I've tried zello, I actually still have it installed on my phone from like 3 years ago. Could not find really any use for it. None of my friends wanted to use it. I would have to find people that want to use it.

@@descargamusicalny Unfortunately, it's the closest we'll ever get to Nextel. The hardware options now days are great. We tried it at my Pizza Hut, but having a double decker over ment I couldn't hear a thing. Now days I could just use a Network Radio with a 1watt speaker. And drivers with Android can use Fast talk, which turns your volume down button into a PTT button.
KSun makes super cheap network radios for around $50-$100, and can use a data SIM, or WiFi.

They should consider some sort of Bluetooth connectivity for short range situations?!?!

Gizmo gadget is way cooler - it's a watch - it has a screen - but no internet access and it calls like a phone only to numbers you allow - along with GPS... highly recommend if you're looking for something like this👍

This would be much better if you only need ONE relay that would work and paired with mobile app (or even two different phones)

I dunno. Cool idea but if I wanted to keep my kids connected without the distraction of a smartphone, I'd just get them a flip phone.

What about old fashioned walkie-talkies? I had a lot of fun with those when I was a kid. Those are ALOT cheaper and do not require a subscription fee. Since they are analog and do not depend on any infrastructure like a cellular network, they are more reliable than this (as long as you are within a couple miles).

I go to Disney world 2 times a year so I would love to see if they would work there

I presume Disney’s coverage is pretty solid; I’m sure they’d work well, network-depending.

yeah fantastic but as a child my phone costs less and i can kinda sorta can do school work on it. the only upside is that i wouldn't be able to do anything else but talk with it. Even then, school work.
