Main problem I have found with (adults) who are unfamiliar with 2-way radios. On receipt of a call they turn the volume right down and hold to their ear like a phone. After the conversation is over they put the radio in their pocket/bag/belt and cannot hear any subsequent calls. It is necessary to instill the habit of turning the volume to maximum before pocketing the radio. Calling tones on some models may bypass this issue.

Thanks, this was well timed - I'd dug out some old ones for the kids to use (and when we go away camping) but they were knackered. Ordered some new Retevis ones and amazed how good they are for the money, plus usb charging so no more AAAs!
Problem with ordering random Retevis walkie talkies is the frequency. If they aren't on UK/EU PMR446 or US FRS you're breaking the law as outside of those allocated frequencies you need a license. Of course Retevis do make them compatible for those frequencies but most "beginners" don't actually know this.

It sounds like you have a pair of beofeng888s, The privacy codes can be set using and external cable connected to a computer while running a program called chirp. However, doing this will not encrypt the radios and it is possible that people can still hear you.
Hi, I have Motorola T42 triple pack for my 3 kids. If it is not possible to have secure conversations, why we have a pair button? What should this button do? My view/expectations was that with the pair option available, was possible to have a secure line between the 3 walkie talkies. This button just ensures the radios are using the same 'privacy code'. As described in the video, this matching code means that radio 1 will open up the squelch of radio 2 so radio 2 can hear the transmission. It's not secure as radios can be set to operate without a code which just means let everything through. Admittedly, people don't often use radios like this (it would be annoying hearing other people's transmissions) but the transmission is completely in the clear so it's wise to avoid personal information of any kind.

correct answer is channels 1 through 22 are family service channels thay are half of a watt channels marked as R P T which stands for repeater channels 15 through 22 hos are the channels I use daily.
@@donalderickson-si8ww Ah I see What I took out of your reply is that they're 22 FRS radio channels. 15-22 are repeater channels for GMRS, which I am aware of. In fact you just told me what I know already. Also I believe you can use 15-22 repeaters channels on 50 watts of power. 8-14 are the only channels that have to be half a watt on both FRS and GMRS. Btw if you didn't know this 15-22 have specific frequencies for connecting to repeaters. They are the same as the normal 15-22 CH just 467. instead of 462. and the beginning.
It depends how far away the cars are from each other. The output at 0.5 watt is low and then trying to get through the body of a car.The RT 24 doesn't have antennas that can be removed to fit another one that could be put on the roof of the car.It maybe better to have licenced radios like Mitex but they're more expensive.aroind £150 for a pair and the licence is £75 for five years but covers you if you buy more radios.A CB radio is more expensive than the RT 24 but no licence is needed. You can use a handheld CB with an antenna to go on the car roof.
Hi, I enjoy your UK based videos and was looking for a bit of advice / your opinion. I just picked up a twin pack of Motorola XT185 radios for my 8 year old son to use when out and about in our location, either to use with friends (cubs etc) or I can keep one at home and he can take one with him. I also wanted something to keep at home if he takes them both and held out until I found a good price on a used XT460 assuming the "pro" radio would be better. Will there be any advantage to me having the XT460, or should I have just picked up a Baofang or similar? I'm sure I could sell the XT460 and easily cover the cost of a Baofeng with the profit I make :-) Thanks
you could get baofengs and it could save you a lot of money in the long run, but I use a motorola dp4400 and the XT460 is classed as a professional business radio as they're built to the greatest of quality
pick your U S based family service radio there are 22 channels in F R S pick one once radio's are on air after reading book pick one channel you buy three fine same channel in all three radios pick code same all three then use base to unit 1 2 3 with code and unit no names on the air becouse other people can only here you see where I am going with this have fun and be safe. I am also a LICENSE holder for G M R S radio
I have been mumbling on these "privacy codes" for so long, but only today a question came to my mind... As the squelch OPENS when it receives the specified CTCSS/DTS code... 1. say I am on channel 5/CTCSS 2, and so is my buddy... and he's talking to me (that is, my squelch is open)| 2. there is some other guy nearby, who also is on channel 5, but maybe has no CTCSS or, say, he has it set to 7 Will I be able to hear him? (as my squelch is open, ehm, this is the dilemma) Thanks for your time, and cheers from a proud owner of a couple of TLKR T80 Extreme and a 420 (my beauty/beast at once)
From my experience, if the other guy nearby use channel 5 with no privacy code, then he would be able to hear your conversation with your buddy on Channel 5-CTCSS 2 although he could not join the conversation (you would not be able to hear what he transmit).
Anyone with their radio setup to not use a privacy tone can hear ALL traffic on that channel. If a tone is set, you would only hear radios also using that tone on that channel.
Umm, silly question here but if they can be heard at greater distances does that mean the limitation is due to the reception on the devices? So the license vs no license is for reception and not actual transmission? Seems weird.
More watts mean better penetration. The antenna will help with distance. So if you have a small antenna the more watts the better distance can hear. While if you have a 2watt radio you can put a longer antenna for distance. So if you are on license free look for a radio that had a long antenna because license free needs to be a fixed antenna.
I am a licensed gmrs operater I can talk long distances becouse I transmit to a tower MY radio is site to the in put and out frequencys of that tower which is the same frequencys for all 6 towers 20 miles on each MY CALL SIGN IS W R X N 824
let's get him back to earth the family service is under orders from the F C C as to what the radio can and can not do you do not change antenna try it you buy a new one your radio runs on a one half of a watt you may run out of range at end of drive way you mite get a mile big problum is what is between the two radio's from talking to each other or not trees buildings see where I am going with this G M R S uses radio towers so I go my radio too tower to the other radio 20 miles away becouse tower Is 150 ft off ground.
your antenna is stock for both F R S and G M R S you do anything to alter the radio and it is right out of the box your a one half of one watt you are fine on all 22 channels of F R S radio be safe have fun.
O man, thank you for all this info. I want to buy denver wta 446 for me and my nephew. My sister181 meters away from me ( just saw from google maps ) , and wanted to use so me and nephew can talk, but when you said 100 meters i got down. They say it has 5km range, so i realy do not understand this lol
most family service radios operate at a1/2 watt know gmrs is five watts and the fcc requires a license to use and the radio needs a input and a recive code to work with the repeter my call sign is WRXN 824
if you live here in the usa the range for any family service radio IS two miles only that rule comes from the F C C NOT shure what his rules are there thinking he over seas that.s what he does no know.
I have a question me and my friend we play airsoft and sometimes we split up and sometimes one stays back and I don't wanna keep yelling across the field to give away positions I was wonder is there a way to get a raideo frequency that me and him can only talk on with no one else listening in
yes you turn your's off he cant talk to you buy the way your radio has a range of two miles or less your at 1/2 watt thats fcc rules the company has to fallow by.
Hi there I would really like to buy the Motorola xt420 like u have but it's quite expensive. Instead I'm considering buying the radioddity ga-2s which is way cheaper and looks like it has alot of the same features. Do u have any experience of that one and would u recommend it?
I am not him you get what you pay for any radio under 50.00 doallers are child locaters my radios where 150 dallars each I use them on the gmrs side and have half the button the midlen has my radios are used by the off road four whellers you buy real radios you good leave the toys for others and thay last longer becouse thay are not toys. I have a 45 watt basegood at 20 miles on repeter
hi I have a question: is there any difference between UHF frequencies?? for example, I mean is there any difference between 410.5 MHz vs 470 MHz?? I'm a mountain climber and I have purchased a uv82. now I want to know which frequency should I use in mountains and forests to achieve the most range? and also which frequency should I use in outdoor(such as deserts) to achieve the most range? or there is no difference between 410 & 433 & 470 MHz at all !??
Hi there, the easiest way to explain it is, the higher the frequency the shorter the distance but the further it can travel through solid objects. (470mhz would be better than 410mhz in a forest). In the mountains 433mhz may be better as the distance is longer and as long as the mountains are clear the signal will be able to travel much quicker and longer than 470mhz. If a dessert is clear with 0 things in the way 410mhz would definitely be the best option.
@@karlwatkins4670 Both of those frequencies would require a license to operate on in most countries. Also the range between the two wouldn't be significantly any different.
@@AndrewMurphy1 oh yes, I know that. I just forgot to add at the bottom not to use the frequencies unless licensed and the person your speaking to and receiving is licensed also 👍
all family service radios are one half of a watt in power with a 2 mile range only and 410 &433 & 470 NHz are ham radio frequencys are channels are channels are 462.650 and up and fall under rules from the F C C.
Just want to write - thanks! I saw your T80 range test and decided that I would definitely buy T92 H2O :) Also, all the information is very useful, although I understand 50%, and 50% read subtitles in translation.
on ALL F R S radio's the range is the same the radio has a one half of one watt F C C rules you are on a one mile leash I with mission control meaning home. base.
I have a question. If I'm not pressing the ptt button can anybody hear me if the walkie talkie is on or is it only when I press the button that the other party or whomever can hear me?
There is a feature on more advanced radios called "VOX" which will automatically transmit when it hears a voice. It's a hands free feature that has to be enabled, and will kill the battery pretty quickly if set too sensitively.
IF you don't push the button NO one will hear you if you had a code and did not tell me the code then I will hear you but cant talk to at all as I don't have code.
Hi mate, we have bought a pair of Motorola T82's to communicate to our friends which travel along side us in our motorhomes, we are no more than 500 ft apart but cannot seem to talk to each other until we park up next to each other.!!! What are we doing wrong.? T.I.A.
If they’re working fine when close then it doesn’t sound like you’re doing anything wrong but I would 💯 expect better performance than this. If you’re driving through a town where one person turns a corner and is out of sight, no chance. However, if you’re on a motorway where the other person is a bit ahead of you, it should be fine.
simple the body of the motor home is putting the brakes on your signel Motorola sellers a Minnie F R S radio buy them mount radio in home and put antenna on the roof then you get what I call the 360 circle stay under a mile apart to talk I have a 45 watt radio for my house. talk to towers with 20 miles range with license from the F C C

Btw if you didn't know this 15-22 have specific frequencies for connecting to repeaters. They are the same as the normal 15-22 CH just 467. instead of 462. and the beginning.
read my last post again.
Great video! Thanks a lot!!!
Can you tell me if the t92 works with every headset with a mic? And does the VOX require a headset which supports VOX?
I am not him ask him if you find him I do no5 have or use them.
sorry not
he is also in the UK that's across the pond and out of the F C C rules.
Hey mate, would you consider a retevis rt24 for a road trip and inter-car communications?
It depends how far away the cars are from each other. The output at 0.5 watt is low and then trying to get through the body of a car.The RT 24 doesn't have antennas that can be removed to fit another one that could be put on the roof of the car.It maybe better to have licenced radios like Mitex but they're more expensive.aroind £150 for a pair and the licence is £75 for five years but covers you if you buy more radios.A CB radio is more expensive than the RT 24 but no licence is needed. You can use a handheld CB with an antenna to go on the car roof.
of corse as long as you are with in a mile thay will work
Hi, I enjoy your UK based videos and was looking for a bit of advice / your opinion.
Any advice?
Baofeng isn't a PMR446 radio.
you could get baofengs and it could save you a lot of money in the long run, but I use a motorola dp4400 and the XT460 is classed as a professional business radio as they're built to the greatest of quality
bao fang is a cheep radio does not work well on gmrs not shure if thay would do family service
pick your U S based family service radio there are 22 channels in F R S
pick one once radio's are on air after reading book pick one channel you buy
three fine same channel in all three radios pick code same all three then
use base to unit 1 2 3 with code and unit no names on the air becouse
other people can only here you see where I am going with this
have fun and be safe. I am also a LICENSE holder for G M R S radio
I have been mumbling on these "privacy codes" for so long, but only today a question came to my mind...
As the squelch OPENS when it receives the specified CTCSS/DTS code...
1. say I am on channel 5/CTCSS 2, and so is my buddy... and he's talking to me (that is, my squelch is open)|
2. there is some other guy nearby, who also is on channel 5, but maybe has no CTCSS or, say, he has it set to 7
Will I be able to hear him? (as my squelch is open, ehm, this is the dilemma)
Thanks for your time, and cheers from a proud owner of a couple of TLKR T80 Extreme and a 420 (my beauty/beast at once)
If a tone is set, you would only hear radios also using that tone on that channel.
answer is YES thay hear you but cant but in on you.
@@NatsumeKonno Thanks :)
I am a licensed gmrs operater I can talk long distances becouse I transmit to a tower MY radio is site to the
in put and out frequencys of that tower which is the same frequencys for all 6 towers 20 miles on each
MY CALL SIGN IS W R X N 824
let's get him back to earth the family service is under orders from
the F C C as to what the radio can and can not do you do not change antenna try it you buy a new one your radio runs on a one half of a
watt you may run out of range at end of drive way you mite get a mile
big problum is what is between the two radio's from talking
to each other or not trees buildings see where I am going with this
G M R S uses radio towers so I go my radio too tower to the other radio
20 miles away becouse tower Is 150 ft off ground.
your antenna is stock for both F R S and G M R S you do anything to alter
the radio and it is right out of the box your a one half of one watt
you are fine on all 22 channels of F R S radio be safe have fun.
Can you do a review of the motorola talkabout 200?
all family service radios are set at 1/2 watt for family service fcc rules short range 2 miles only
Does privacy codes have a standard? Do they go across walkie brands?
Yes. CTCSS tones and DCS codes are standard. The way a walkie-talkie brand refers to them differs but they're all ultimately using the same standard.
Maybe it ws a slip of the tongue, but PMR stands for Personel (or Privat) Mobile Radio. Not for Professional.
your right HE is from the U K across the pond Pmr 466 is a radio used in the U K
not here in the U S A sorry. his fault keeps jumping for his to ares
O man, thank you for all this info. I want to buy denver wta 446 for me and my nephew. My sister181 meters away from me ( just saw from google maps ) , and wanted to use so me and nephew can talk, but when you said 100 meters i got down. They say it has 5km range, so i realy do not understand this lol
most family service radios operate at a1/2 watt know gmrs is five watts and the fcc requires a license to use
and the radio needs a input and a recive code to work with the repeter my call sign is WRXN 824
if you live here in the usa the range for any family service radio IS two miles only that rule comes
from the F C C NOT shure what his rules are there thinking he over seas that.s what he does no know.
Excellent explanation.
those USA based radios are rated at less then a mile on 22 family service radio channels
Did you use any special antenna in the Retervis, and Motorola tests when you got about 1.7km?
the antenna can not be played with F C C rules state side.
STOCK you mess with it back to store for new radio.
I have a question me and my friend we play airsoft and sometimes we split up and sometimes one stays back and I don't wanna keep yelling across the field to give away positions I was wonder is there a way to get a raideo frequency that me and him can only talk on with no one else listening in
answer is NO you cant will still hear you
Why do some walkie talkies have a power button and others don’t?
So if the walkie talkie is powered off will it not go off if the other is speaking?
yes you turn your's off he cant talk to you buy the way your radio has a range of two miles or less your at 1/2 watt
thats fcc rules the company has to fallow by.
Hi there I would really like to buy the Motorola xt420 like u have but it's quite expensive. Instead I'm considering buying the radioddity ga-2s which is way cheaper and looks like it has alot of the same features. Do u have any experience of that one and would u recommend it?
It really does depend on what you want to use them for, what environment they'll be used in and what range you require
I use walkie talkies from rugged radio thay are water proff ther are the radios i use
I am not him you get what you pay for any radio under 50.00 doallers are child locaters my radios where
150 dallars each I use them on the gmrs side and have half the button the midlen has my radios are used by
the off road four whellers you buy real radios you good leave the toys for others and thay last longer
becouse thay are not toys. I have a 45 watt basegood at 20 miles on repeter
hi
I have a question: is there any difference between UHF frequencies??
for example, I mean is there any difference between 410.5 MHz vs 470 MHz??
Both of those frequencies would require a license to operate on in most countries.
@@karlwatkins4670 Both of those frequencies would require a license to operate on in most countries. Also the range between the two wouldn't be significantly any different.
@@AndrewMurphy1 oh yes, I know that. I just forgot to add at the bottom not to use the frequencies unless licensed and the person your speaking to and receiving is licensed also 👍
all family service radios are one half of a watt in power with a 2 mile range
only and 410 &433 & 470 NHz are ham radio frequencys are channels
are channels are 462.650 and up and fall under rules from the F C C.
Just want to write - thanks! I saw your T80 range test and decided that I would definitely buy T92 H2O :)
Also, all the information is very useful, although I understand 50%, and 50% read subtitles in translation.
Glad it was useful!
on ALL F R S radio's the range is the same the radio has a one half of one watt
F C C rules you are on a one mile leash I with mission control meaning home.
base.
I have a question. If I'm not pressing the ptt button can anybody hear me if the walkie talkie is on or is it only when I press the button that the other party or whomever can hear me?
No they can't u when u didn't push the ptt button
Thank you
There is a feature on more advanced radios called "VOX" which will automatically transmit when it hears a voice. It's a hands free feature that has to be enabled, and will kill the battery pretty quickly if set too sensitively.
answer is yes you talk release he talkes and relces one person at a time have fun if you are doing a all dayer
bring back up batteries.
However, if you’re on a motorway where the other person is a bit ahead of you, it should be fine.
your antenna need to be out side too much metel in the home to transmit through.
simple the body of the motor home is putting the brakes on your signel
Motorola sellers a Minnie F R S radio buy them mount radio in home
and put antenna on the roof then you get what I call the 360 circle
stay under a mile apart to talk I have a 45 watt radio for my house.
talk to towers with 20 miles range with license from the F C C
put a tin can over the radio your signel will stop at the can you motor home
is the same thing it will go through glass only.
Silly question...what's the name of the background music at the beginning?
ask him not me
No one asked you
What is that clicking sound i hear whenever no one is using the radio?
some one i keying the mike butten
and does not say any thing.
What do you mean by "unlocking" the 9-16 PMR channels. Im looking for my Motorola XT180's & TLKR T60 manuals and find nothing on how to-do it?
I think in his T42 video he showed the process. It was something like hold two buttons while turning it on
This is a bit outdated just wondering if you have any new recommendations for small kids?
Kids Walkie-talkies haven’t changed at all. The advice here is still valid (in my opinion, of course). 👍🏻
middlen or any frs radio will work
I am from state side USA pick a radio read the book cover to cover
pick a channel 1 through 22 ad a code number your in my advice no child name
on radio your 1 if off base he is 2 your home your base two unit 1 which is him
as other people can here you but can not talk to you all so workes if friends
find it fun to do also
Hi, I have a motorola T82 extrem, how do you set the device to the channel 9 to channel 16, only 8 are set previouly ??
family service radio's are set at by the builder under orders from the
sorry Motorola is to messed up for me as I don't have or Owen them
read the book and see. sorry I do own a G M R S radio station that is where I
get my info from as to codes and that stuff.
and IF you did not pick it up he is from the United kingdom.
awesome
People can TAP conversations
I use military grade stuff for airsoft so I don’t know a lot about the Walmart stuff
Try the uv-5r for airsoft I find it evens fit in a pocket and still gets 5 miles simplex range
@@legendgodmyth They also require a license to operate, and should not be operated on UK/EU PMR446 or NA FRS frequencies as they do not comply with the construction and ERP guidelines.
@@AndrewMurphy1 ye but nobody cars if you use simplex radio there are ways of encrypting your radio to just other radios
@@legendgodmyth radio encryption or not it's still illegal to use those radios without a license. Also radio encryption is easily broken in 30 seconds flat.
@@legendgodmyth and another thing as a license holder for HAM Amateur Radio - you will be found if you're transmitting illegally or irresponsibility. If it's not the FCC or Ofcom or their equivalents based on your location it'll be a HAM knocking on your door.
Yadda yadda ... Can this help me during a zombie apocalypse !?
Of course make sure the privacy tone is set from stun to kill.
with only two miles tops tell me what you think I rung g m r s and 6 towers linked to gether
your fine hope no one is more then two miles away for you Thai's is the range for them good luck.
Nate you let out your dum side son
@@NatsumeKonno are being a dummie know.
Outside of Europe and UK is 22 Channels i think
that's the uk state side is 1 thruogh 22 is family service repeter channels are 15 through 22 with in put and
out put channels for each tower whe have 6 lalinket together at 20 miles together
you are right all radio built here are under the rules of the F C C state side
that is in put only there is a different pl tone for each tower example
114.3 is mine and all three of my radios are are set the same
How far does a Motorola radius cp200xls go
according to the f c c thay are rated at 1/2 watt that's why you are at 2 miles or less
2 miles or line of site your on one block same street he is on same block 12 blocks down the street hope this helps.
I use chanel 2.222
if it works for you fine then leave the radio the same when you turn it off
thats all folks
I have one
Will they go through walls
Not very well. The attenuation is pretty big.
@@tdcattech thanks I subscribed, good day and good luck!
@@tdcattech I disagree as a licensed amateur radio operator. A UHF radio is better for penetrating walls vs a VHF radio due to the higher frequency, however there aren't any license free walkie talkies on VHF.
like at the mall yes your range is 2 miles on a 1/2/ watt
hear is your answer I live on the 12 floor of a building my boss is on first
range 1 mile we are basically on top of each other 12 floor a part
answer yes.

what if i have 22 channels?
In the US you have 22 channels for FRS radios.

@tdcattech Incorrect. Thankfully, my son-in-law who works in the military, set up both my units (frequencies, etc.) so I was able to utilise the "button" to talk. The setting up for the lay person is ALL important, don't you think? 🤦♂️

since he is over seas not shure here state side two miles on a 1/2 watt

I have a question I have Motorola talk about walkie talkie and my are the green ones how far does that go it says 35 but how far is that
NO IT IS NOT which ever radio you bought IS family service out of the box range is 2 miles becouse your radio
only puts out 1/2 of a watt that is fcc rules state side his rules are deferent
that is G M R S radio 35 miles yes with license from the F C C at $ 35.00
I do 20 miles in town and when my tower linkes up with the east coast link
I talk to Chicago ILL twice a month.
