- For everyone out there who thinks that the only reason Serena Williams has won 17 grand slam singles titles, 13 grand slam doubles titles, 4 Olympic gold medals, and a career Golden Slam is purely because of her "power", think again! While nobody denies that Serena is among the most powerful and athletic women ever to play her sport, these attributes alone do not bring success in a technical sport such as tennis.
There are many other powerful athletes on the tennis tour who haven't even come close to matching Serena's accomplishments. Davenport, Kuznetsova, Petrova, Safina, and Sharapova were all "power" players, while Capriati, Clijsters and Henin can all match the athleticism of Williams. Venus can match Serena in both of these categories. But none of them have been able to consistanly achieve as Serena has. The main reason is the mental edge she has over them.
This video demonstrates the variety of shots that Serena can employ which often goes overlooked when people just assume that she just hits the ball as hard as she can each stroke. It also shows the strategy that she uses against certain players in different situations. Serena rarely ever gets credit for her technical abilities or her ability to out think her opponents. She scores and A in both categories!
I thought that there'd be no one better than Stefi Graf, but Serena Williams is on ANOTHER LEVEL!!!!!!

Steffi won 107 of 214.
Serena has a career match winning percentage of 84.6.
Steffi of 89.3.
Serena won 0 slam finals against top 10 all-time greats..
Steffi won 8.
Serena had 2 years in which she won 3 slams.
Steffi had 5 years in which she won 3 or even 4 slams.
Serena is at least one level below Steffi.
Even nationalistic Americans are slowly coming around and agree with that.
To be the greatest player of all time is more than just singles winning percentages.
It's weird to me that nobody talks about doubles, which shows well-roundedness and versatility. Serena has the doubles career to match her singles, which is never considered and too often left out of the conversation.
When Serena was winnning her singles grand slams, she was often times winning the same grand slam in doubles as well. Steffi did this once (Wimbledon 1988) but never again in her career. In the grand slams, Steffi focused on singles only, and there's nothing wrong with that, but that's a big reason why I believe Serena was better. Serena was able to be the best in both singles and doubles at the same time consistently. To me, that makes Serena and Navratilova levels above Steffi Graff.
Throughout her whole career, Steffi only has one grand slam in doubles. Serena has 14 Grand Slam Doubles titles. Steffi completed the "Calendar Year Golden Slam," which no other player in history has ever done, but Serena has completed a "Career Golden Slam" in Singles and Doubles, which no other player has ever done. When you consider the greatest player of all time, in my opinion, you have to look at doubles too, and Steffi just doesn't contribute much to the conversation at all there. In the open era, I'd have to put even Martina Navratilova over Steffi. That's just my opinion though... 🤷🏿♂️ I'm not saying you're wrong and I'm right or vice versa...

I agree, best woman server. Best male server I have seen is Pete Sampras. Saw an interview a long time ago, when Serena said how much she admired Pete's game, so perhaps she took some tips from him. Both of them have a smooth, economical motion, very clean and simple, effortless looking.

Again, anything before the open era isn't even a major. In some Aussie open's, Court had to play only 4 or 5 rounds. Sometimes playing only Aussies. And in one final, Court won because the other Aussie in the final withdrew.

Well there are players who can match the power, serve and athleticism of her, but none can match her in all three aspects.
If other players and their coaches REALLY believed that Serena's game was just power, then they would be in the gym building the muscles that Serena has.
EVEN if they believed that muscles were her strong point, do they think she was born with these muscles (color-aroused misunderstanding) or do they understand that muscles come from work-outs?
I have to conclude that they really don't believe in the muscles explanation, because if they did then you wouldn't see any skinny women anymore at the top of tennis.
The truth is that even if they had Serena Williams' body, they couldn't beat her without her mind.
Every player in the top twenty today can serve 110 to 118 mph, so they ALL have "power" now. The difference is how you use it.

When I talk to my parents and friends about Serena and why she is so great, I always say that Serena can pretty much out-power anyone on the WTA tour, and if someone can match her in power, Serena can beat them at tennis with her variety. The variety of Serena is incredibly underrated. I don't care what anyone says. She's the GOAT in my opinion.
Sadly ,some things actually never change. Coloured athletes are almost always praised for their strength, power, stamina, etc, etc, but only seldom for their tactics or strategy. This clip just proves all these pre-conception to be wrong.

I think that when She played Graf she was 17 when she won Indian Wells. This was her second WTA title.
I just hope she can bring it one last time to a major. Her consistency and accuracy has dipped but is still good enough to compete. If only she can up it one last time i think she can win

This is such a great video! Serena's tennis skills are really underrated - especially her mental/tactics. She is unique because she combines precision, technique, mental toughness, tactics and athleticism with power which NO ONE else can do!!

Love Serena! My favorite player of all time followed by Venus, Agassi, and the Joker (Novak). Definitely more than just power but its one thing that people tend to forget. Her game is awesome. People (most who play below a 4.0 level or even the more laughable non-players) don't understand that that amount of "power" takes incredible touch to wield with this efficiently. There is one thing that these videos could never capture though. It is the biggest aspect of her game to me. It's her belief in herself and that mental grit matched by no player I have ever seen play this game at this level. That's where all of her abilities are rooted. You can do none of this without that toughness! Her serve(biggest weapon in the sport period) wouldnt be the beast it is without the belief that she has the ability to hit 4 aces in a row on command. In 2016, Serena played 8 tournaments while Karolina played around 22 or 23 tournaments.
In 2015. I think Serena played less than 12 tournaments while Karolina played 26.

I like Karolina as a player. She has a great game but it's very unlikely she will win 20 grand slams due to her lack of court movement.
Her court movement is her BIGGEST weakness right now.

18tangles But that's the whole point the poster is making--yes, you can only play who turns up but the important thing to remember is that not all of the best players turned up to the Australian Open back then. Even if you take Serena completely out of the equation, most claim that Graff is the best and she herself is 2 shy of Court's record--but Graff's titles were all in the Open era. And while Court does have more doubles and mixed titles, those are TEAM achievements and not single achievements so they don't hold as much weight in a singles debate to me.

S. Williams extremely skilled in fact she's the most skilled and confident in the history of the game. She was never one dimensional. How else can you become the greatest tennis champion of all time? On another note Azerenka is very annoying she sounds like a hoot owl. Women's tennis has come a long way even since the 1990's. People who say otherwise just don't want to give women tennis players any credit. The women's game is as professional as it gets equal to the men. Same skills on display and they play with the same rules--except for the majors where the men play best of five. But the Williams pushed the sport made it more professional. The women aren't playing around out there. They mean business. Serena Williams is a badass tennis champion on the court there's no denying it.
