I rerolled on another server late in BC and ground the Frozen Shadoweave for a spot in a Black Temple and Hyjal guild. The main healer said in vent that she immediately felt the mana I provided. That guild then gifted me a Zul'Aman war bear the last day it was available, probably my proudest WoW achievement. Affliction warlock-ing and shadow priest-ing in BC are my most nostalgic WoW times.
I mained shadow in TBC, always my favourite class. Some of my best memories raiding tbc content as shadow and feeling 'useful' more so than early Vanilla.
I switched to spriest from a war tank towards the end of vanilla, and didn't raid on the spriest until tbc. I can't say what they were like in vanilla, but I can talk about them from tbc onwards. BC was my fav xpac for shadow. The utility we provided for the raid (in the form of mana regen) made a good spriest indispensable. I never felt like that in the following xpacs.
The 80's Wolf I find your spec pretty bad for Pve. You need shadow focus 5/5 and spirit tap is pretty useless In raids. I’d rather have blackout as some trash is stunable & impro. VE is not Worth the points undlad you get 600+ spellpower
I had a much different experience in Wrath as a Shadow Priest for raiding. I wasn't always in BIS (and in fact was held out of raids for not having a high enough "gear level" the bane of my existence) but I was still top of the dps for our group. To the point where I had to pull back because I was out agroing our tank who was in nearly all BIS. You are completely right about mastering the proper rotation. Without that you were sunk as a dps. One important part was keeping Shadow word: Pain up at all times, but what was critical was having as high crit and dmg boosts you can active at the time of your first cast. Renewing the spell with mindflay kept them even if you yourself didn't have them anymore. I.e popping all trinkets and instant casts like inner focus for example.
I switched fromm holy to shadow with the release of ICC and raided to the end of Cata as Shadowpirest. My Guild was not professionel or even close^^ but we killed LK25HC faction 2nd and my LK 10HC was faction 2nd too. I was difinitly one of our strongest DPS during the whole time. Its hard to tell who was the strongest but it was always between our best Warlock, best Rouge and me(Shadow).Getting the highest DPS on Sindragosa, Professor Putricide, Lord Marrowgar, Sindragosa, Blood Prince Council and Valithria Dreamwalker close to every kill and somtimes LK and so on... Jep we lacked good mages at this time. But yeah a lot of shadows sucked everyone has his strengths and i wasent the best holy priest before. Later in Cataclysm we decided to play in 10 player Raids and i was the first player on the realm to completet the legendary staff in a 10 man Raid group ( 4th with 25 Raids included,but they got much higher drops). Just saying shadow was Insane back than ! pure singel Target dps was good, but when fights requiered movment, multitarget or even AOE( ME was the bet AOE of all time in my opionion) shadow was just insane. The Playstile was incredibble fluid fast and responsive and you could optimise a lot.......Hast was your most important secoundary statt... playing with mindflay 1 sec durations was an incredible fast and responsive feeling. it was all about getting the feeling for the encounter , move/chancel at the right time to get one more MF tick and adapt you rotation to fit perfect with the encounter. I played for a short peroid in WoD(first Raid Tier) and shadow was still very good. In singel target static fights even stronger than before (or my Guild members sucked dont know) but the playstile was not as much fun and rewarding for me

It's important to note that MP5 for spriests in Vanilla was the best stat to stack. 3 set t2, the dark moon card that allowed 100 percent mana regen while in combat, and mp5 enchants/gear were extremely important to get. Also also focusing on targets that had little hp in raids were important for priests to try to trigger spirit tap.
As soon as I see a raiding talent build for shadow that has 5/5 in Spirit Tap, I know there are going to be problems. Then I look at the rest of the spec and...yep, lots of problems. In vanilla, 5/5 in Spirit Tap isn't going to help you in a boss fight or trash pulls. Should be 5/5 in Blackout, to help out some trash pulls, or PvP. You only need 2/3 in Shadow Affinity, and 3/5 in Shadow Focus, since that gets you to the hit cap. Those saved points are better used for getting you silence, to increase your utility in raids and also help with PvP. In the Disc tree, you only need 1/5 in Silent Resolve unless your tanks can't hold threat. Even then, you should be able to manage it without Silent Resolve. That means you can max out Imp. Fort, and Imp. shield, thus increasing your utility in raids and your PvP viability. Other variations such as Wand Spec v. Iron Will, and Shadow Weaving/Silence vs Imp. Mind Blast are debatable depending upon playstyle or situation. As for mana problems in vanilla, that mainly comes from improper gearing, since so much gear advice for priests incorrectly focused on spirit and +dmg&healing, instead of Int and MP5. Since you're not trying to top the damage meters, you can sacrifice +dmg&healing for int and MP5. DO that and you won't go OOM as a shadow priest in vanilla, or need need many consumables beyond what other casters normally need.
Played shadow as main in Wotlk and Cata. Awesome times... And i kinda prefer Wotlk rotation over that shadowform stuff that we have now. + healing we provided was awesome.
Actually in vanilla a shadow priest could quite easily tank alot of the dungeon including strat and scholo. Granted you need some good gear to do this but its always fun doing scholo with just clothies.
We are on chapter 8, THATS RIGHT, Vanilla had a lot of useless class that were less then viable for raiding, either because they realy were underpowered or because of general perception. So pretty much class balance was something the devs had never heard back then :D

Shadow priest was actually pretty important in Wotlk, it had many buffs including replenishment which gave decent amount of mana regen to whole raid. Also they gave +3% hit chance on boss,and the vampiric healing was really good on fights with a lot of raid wide dmg.
I played a priest since early vanilla up to Legion. Was forced to heal during vanilla but since TBC came out i've been sticking with Shadow as my main spec and main toon throughout the years. I've been ranking between top 50 priests consistently since WOTLK and there are tons of things you missed here. The reason SPs are looked down upon is because the skill cap to play a priest was downright higher than any other class in game. complex rotation, dot snapshots, mindflay clipping and multidotting is something no other class had to do really. Over the years SP were moving from being not viable in raids to highest burst in game during Dragonsoul era and Throne of Thunder. It is one of the only classes that had so many changes in play style within a single spec. shadow orbs, mastery changes, clarity of power, surrender to madness, halo and tier sets could completely change the way you gear up, rotation and purpose in groups significantly. It is my favorite class in game by far.
Shadow priest is a good example of a support style dps class done right. I wish in vanilla the other hybrid dps classes were more in par with what shadow priest did. Every other hybrid dps (other than warrior, and yes, warrior is a hybrid class) was straight out worse and had horrible problems, sometimes missing skills entirely or running out of mana from only a few spell casts.
Actually at the start of TBC (retail not private servers) the shadow priest was a top tier spell dps class, with some arguing it to be the best during T4 when played well. It had two things going for it, 1) Shadow priests got 10% hit from talents, which was leaps and bounds beyond anything any other caster class (excluding elementals) could get from talents and even with fully optimized gear prior to T5 and the major gear revamp in patch 2.1, some classes still struggled to hit this number. 2) Shadow priests gained more benefits from tailoring sets, due to the amazing amount of base hit and the extremely high scaling from pure spell damage and their inherit ability to snapshot damage. With the added benefits of their utility most competent 25 man raids ran minimum 2, but up to 3/4 priests. Shadow priests started to fall off during T5, while still retaining their top tier dps ranking, but losing to warlocks. After BT/MH it was coming apparent that the lack of scaling from other stats than spell damage was a glaring issue and most guilds resorted to running just 1 shadow priest in SWP, who was there to buff the warlocks.

During WOTLK the basic spriest rotation got a lot easier with T10 4 set bonus which made mind blast irrelevant because you could cast mind flay in a gcd (if you had some haste at least). Also don't forget about mind shear which dealt a ridiculous amount of aoe dmg. My 6.1k gs spriest hit spikes of upwards of 40k in ICC.
Hugh Jazz I played competitive pve shadow in TBC. I was running close to 1,300 spell damage and was consistently top 3 dps. A good friend of mine raided shadow in vanilla and was top 5. Bunch of BS that you weren’t viable as dps. People just sucked
Shadow was quite good in TBC, better than most hunters, rogues, druids etc but they were never as potent as mages or locks, unfortunately. Top 5 dps in vanilla? I doubt that, I seriously do. I was pretty much in BiS gear but I got nowhere near the top spots. Mana was the issue, and even with mana management and pots/runes on cd I couldn't stay in the top for more than 2 minutes. Maybe if you did MC/BWL and the rest of your raid had this lvl of gear but not if people have naxx gear. Has your friend some videos of, let's say, Sapphiron fights? I really would like to see how he does it.
2:35 It was more sensible to put 4/5 points in Shadow Weaving. All 4/5 points did was reduce the chance it applies to 80%. The power remained the same. Since 80% was easily high enough to keep it applied (since it had a 15s duration), the 5th talent point was often a waste. 8:00 more mind flay clipping thru the rest of the video! Didn't they have /cast [nochanneling:Mind Flay]AbilityName macros back then?
Shadow dps is pretty underrated, i was often above hunters and in top 5 in bwl/aq, just gotta farm dark runes(and whatever those that dropped from felwood satyrs are called), have mana pots and all the mana regen buffs you can get,, it is usually enough for consistent dps throughout any bossfight, and as long as you don't oom - youre pretty up there in terms of damage. I'd even say it's the only viable hybrid dps spec when it comes to pure damage
@@eduardomarchant7636 mind flay would only remove stuff like fireball ticks and shadow weaving is not a wasted slot by far, although it depends on how many warlocks you run with
Thank goodness classic will be based around 1.12 like private servers are. Shadow priests won't be completely relegated to a pvp spec. Also make friends with healing druids and warlocks. They will love you in 5 man's. You boost the locks dps making up for your dps short comings and the druids don't have to worry about not having a proper rez. Also vampiric embrace makes the healers job easier since you will be providing a Hot for the entire group the entire dungeon saving them mana. Also you can always act as a perfectly adequate back up healer should your healer die.
I played on bleedinghollow as horde during warth. I was in wintergrasp and this shadow priest from the guild tasty beverage had bis gear and I could only imagine every single buff possible in the game. He instant cast devouring plague on me and crit for 85% of my hp then swd crit me to overkill by at least 50%. I said HOLY FUCK just like that from I died from 2 instant cast I will never forget seeing him and getting ready to fight only to die 2-3 seconds into the fight.
I disagree with how your guest viewed shadow priests during tbc. They could do insane damage if played right, just check out muqq from nihilum. He was topping the meters during their BT progression.
It seems they are NOT using vampire touch which was the main dps source of the shadow priest. I remember back then that you couldnt allow that dot to not be refreshed. Your friend is right BC was realy the best and buy the way the best arena team which chocked all the warrior druids was rogue shadow priest
i remmber when i was ask by a guild to go shadow and i said no , i will join as healer . indeed shadow was hard for me and i love healing more and for dps i get mage . love the old days ..thinking of coming back to the game .
BM was? in my experience playing in retail TBC and private vanilla, Marksman was the supreme vanilla PVE specc while BM definetely was strong in pvp, and although my memory of TBC is not that greeat, i remember as though BM was also the primary PVP specc then and not the primary choice in PVE?

A guest that "raided on a private server as a shadow priest"... I played TBC shadow priest and during the early part I was right up there in the dmg lists. Slowly got overtaken by warlocks but even after all that time Shadow was still above average DPS with the huge upsite of nearly infinite amount of mana and heal for your group.
I thought about it but demo locks were already quite viable in vanilla, and also very powerful all through burning crusade and wrath so they're hardly underdogs.
Hamsterwheel i think they were nerfed in all wrath because a bis demo lock can't even make it to the top 10 dps with the likes of a fire mage or a fury warrior or a combat rogue etc in the raid
@@HamsterWheelGaming idk, in my guilds on wotlk servers, were demo warlock, on the top dps. I played one of them. But its big difference between blizzard wotlk times and now. Rotation is based on procs. Incinerate and soul fire. On every multitarget boss must be demo warlock on wotk on first place in dpc, because soul fire proc contine, 10 sec after death of target, so in icc he must be in top 3 dps. If not, something is wrong.
Really? what about dotting in MC? And what about demonology? They weren't really viable until BC and the Fel Guard. And even then they weren't top notch yet.
Demonology (or more specifically, the DS/Ruin build 7/21/23) was one of the highest dps builds in vanilla, so they're not exactly underdogs especially compared to things like the balance druid or the smite priest.
Hamsterwheel Maybe you are right, i barely even played the warlock, neither on retail nor on vanilla/private servers, but i can't imagine that a spec, based on damage over time, was on top end in Vanilla with its debuff slot limit. On Kronos, in MC for example, i saw warlocks spamming shadow bolt, curse of elements and Banish, no dots. I saw Locks just casting Shadow Bolts on BC servers, e.g. in Karazhan However, i look forward to further "Underdogs of Raiding"-Episodes featuring other cool youtubers, like HvsB^^
Don't fret Shadow Priest you were top tier even number 1 dps for most of Legion. I imagine it was because of the revamp and the new way it plays so Id expect this all the same in BFA it is far from one of the worst classes now a days.
I am wondering... in wrath att a point the healing input was really high and me and some fellows were putting up a math that if you had 2e of them in a raid it be insane. Never got around to it though
only problem, with 8 debuff slots, sw will not be up, so they where not brougthin a raid because people underestiamted them, they jsut couldnt do anything and dont provide a buff due to the 8 slots.. so that made them useless before 1.8, and even then. in classic overall
I am extremely interested to main an undead shadow priest in classic. Would anyone recomend it to me over a mage? What I love the most is that are one of the few casters in vanilla with a decent rotation to keep up and I love the dot play style (I'm not playing a lock, I already played warlock in vanilla and I hated every moment of it). I love the fact that is also very capable in pvp. I'm not worried about the somewhat mediocre dps in PVE, but this thing about burning mana quickly worries me a lot more. Is it a really big deal, can it be managed?
Spriests dont really have a DoT playstyle in Vanilla. They only have one DoT and usually arn't allowed to use it in raids due to the debuff limit. They are only there to apply the shadow weaving debuff which buffs locks. Also if the guild is really serious about min maxing they would actually take a healer who half specs into shadow and casts rank 1 mindflay to apply shadow weaving. If you just want to raid casually you will probably find a spot but it will be hard to get into top guilds.
Yeah i would like to know where you got that info. Warlock were the best dps in tbc for almsot the entire xpac. Some hardcore guild reroll to lock since they were op dps wise.
i remember when i played in wrath i saw quite alot of shadow priests in raids AND pvp, honestly when i look at this video it makes me want to play a shadow priest in classic as well. i really hope classic is gonna be the real deal and not some casualized piece of shit, i like all this in depth mastering of the class it seems to me that shadow priests arent just for anyone they are meant for people who are willing to spend time and effort in them to get the best out of them, which sounds like vanilla to me and thats why i dont want any changes to classic wow:D
you know that vanilla isn't very forgiving, neither is the community? You can try as hard as you can but people will not raid with you (except casual raiding guilds).

He said that shadow priests were good in PvP and that one shadow priest was basically mandatory for every raiding group, so they might certainly raid with him (if he's good enough anyway). Of course, in progression guilds, there would be no room for more than one, but not all guilds are progression guilds. There will be a large amount of casual raiding guilds who aren't aiming to get to AQ40 and Naxx.
Nice Vid, but I do not aggree with the "low" dmg in TBC... I remember quite good running 1.1 - 1.3 k DPS on some fights in SSC and TK. Not BiS equipped but still Top5 in DPS every time.
Shadow priest dps was high in t4 and early t5. Once guilds started reaching Kael and pushing into BT your dps stopped scaling. This was primarily due to the fact that spriests scaled better from pure spell power than any other class, and gear in the early parts of the game offered more shadow bonus damage than any other type. It was not uncommon for a shadow priest to have up to 100 more bonus damage from their gear. HOWEVER, once haste and crit breakpoints became available for warlocks and several other classes, shadow priests started falling behind. I know, I raided through to BT and Hyjal, killing Archimonde but quitting before getting Illidan. When I was in Kara and SSC/TK I was consistently top damage on nearly every fight. But once I started grouping with players that were progressively geared and pushing SSC/TK I was pushed further and further down, and the difference was STARK.
In vanilla you just went full spirit on gear and you never went oom.....In Burning crusade i raided all content as shadow priest,my guild used 2 one for a shaman party were they were spamming chain heal and one for the mages with one paladin. as a result i had perma mana tide perma bloodlust perma leatherworking drums end game gear including Skull of guldan and still i could do around 1700dps when mages did areoun 3k :( Feels bad man,
Jim Kodonikas I was top 5 dps as shadow all through TBS. and your party had full mana entire boss fight. Best spec besides enhancement shaman. Satisfying dps and best support. This unfortunately died with WOTLK
This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. In TBC Shadow priests with the tailoring set were top tier dps in tier 4 and early tier 5. I regularly topped dps on Gruul and early SSC/TK. Once other classes start getting tier 5 gear you fall off rather quickly but for the entire expansion two spriests was standard. Every healer wants a shadow priest in their group.
I guess your experience differs from mine. Everytime I did kara, gruul's or maggy the shadow destro locks and fire mages always reigned supreme on the damage meters and in higher tier content those shadow destro locks stayed there cause of how well geared stacked with their talents.

Also I'm not sure how accurate private server numbers are. Preaches video "Legacy of the Priest" (14:08) backs up my memory. I suspect if the tailoring sets weren't in the game then Spriests wouldn't be competitive at any stage of TBC. Love your vids btw. Cant wait for Classic and fingers crossed for classic TBC. Im so pissed that undead is horde lol. I wanna play a shadow priest in vanilla and ive always been alliance, if i made a human priest id feel like im missing out on so much by not going undead. I would go dwarf but they are just beyond the level of ugly that i can handle in a video game lol.

We are on chapter 8, THATS RIGHT, Vanilla had a lot of useless class that were less then viable for raiding, either because they realy were underpowered or because of general perception. So pretty much class balance was something the devs had never heard back then :D

My main and favorite class by far! Especially in tbc.
Shadow priest was actually pretty important in Wotlk, it had many buffs including replenishment which gave decent amount of mana regen to whole raid. Also they gave +3% hit chance on boss,and the vampiric healing was really good on fights with a lot of raid wide dmg.
100% Sure in TBC and Wrath Shadowweaving got nerfed to 10% at 5 Stacks to compensate for the 5% Debuff as well but oh well !

I played a priest since early vanilla up to Legion. Was forced to heal during vanilla but since TBC came out i've been sticking with Shadow as my main spec and main toon throughout the years.
I've been ranking between top 50 priests consistently since WOTLK and there are tons of things you missed here.
The reason SPs are looked down upon is because the skill cap to play a priest was downright higher than any other class in game. complex rotation, dot snapshots, mindflay clipping and multidotting is something no other class had to do really.
Over the years SP were moving from being not viable in raids to highest burst in game during Dragonsoul era and Throne of Thunder.
It is one of the only classes that had so many changes in play style within a single spec. shadow orbs, mastery changes, clarity of power, surrender to madness, halo and tier sets could completely change the way you gear up, rotation and purpose in groups significantly.
It is my favorite class in game by far.
We called them mana batteries back in Burning Crusade for their abilities!
Shadow priest is a good example of a support style dps class done right. I wish in vanilla the other hybrid dps classes were more in par with what shadow priest did. Every other hybrid dps (other than warrior, and yes, warrior is a hybrid class) was straight out worse and had horrible problems, sometimes missing skills entirely or running out of mana from only a few spell casts.
Actually at the start of TBC (retail not private servers) the shadow priest was a top tier spell dps class, with some arguing it to be the best during T4 when played well.
It had two things going for it, 1) Shadow priests got 10% hit from talents, which was leaps and bounds beyond anything any other caster class (excluding elementals) could get from talents and even with fully optimized gear prior to T5 and the major gear revamp in patch 2.1, some classes still struggled to hit this number. 2) Shadow priests gained more benefits from tailoring sets, due to the amazing amount of base hit and the extremely high scaling from pure spell damage and their inherit ability to snapshot damage. With the added benefits of their utility most competent 25 man raids ran minimum 2, but up to 3/4 priests.
Shadow priests started to fall off during T5, while still retaining their top tier dps ranking, but losing to warlocks. After BT/MH it was coming apparent that the lack of scaling from other stats than spell damage was a glaring issue and most guilds resorted to running just 1 shadow priest in SWP, who was there to buff the warlocks.

During WOTLK the basic spriest rotation got a lot easier with T10 4 set bonus which made mind blast irrelevant because you could cast mind flay in a gcd (if you had some haste at least).
Also don't forget about mind shear which dealt a ridiculous amount of aoe dmg. My 6.1k gs spriest hit spikes of upwards of 40k in ICC.
Hugh Jazz I played competitive pve shadow in TBC. I was running close to 1,300 spell damage and was consistently top 3 dps. A good friend of mine raided shadow in vanilla and was top 5. Bunch of BS that you weren’t viable as dps. People just sucked
Shadow was quite good in TBC, better than most hunters, rogues, druids etc but they were never as potent as mages or locks, unfortunately. Top 5 dps in vanilla? I doubt that, I seriously do. I was pretty much in BiS gear but I got nowhere near the top spots. Mana was the issue, and even with mana management and pots/runes on cd I couldn't stay in the top for more than 2 minutes. Maybe if you did MC/BWL and the rest of your raid had this lvl of gear but not if people have naxx gear. Has your friend some videos of, let's say, Sapphiron fights? I really would like to see how he does it.
Underdogs in raids maybe, but Gods in PvP.

2:35 It was more sensible to put 4/5 points in Shadow Weaving. All 4/5 points did was reduce the chance it applies to 80%. The power remained the same. Since 80% was easily high enough to keep it applied (since it had a 15s duration), the 5th talent point was often a waste.

Shadow dps is pretty underrated, i was often above hunters and in top 5 in bwl/aq, just gotta farm dark runes(and whatever those that dropped from felwood satyrs are called), have mana pots and all the mana regen buffs you can get,, it is usually enough for consistent dps throughout any bossfight, and as long as you don't oom - youre pretty up there in terms of damage. I'd even say it's the only viable hybrid dps spec when it comes to pure damage
Y priest damage is no doubt more than good enough, BUt they do still take 3 debuff slots + the bad mana efficiency is abit too much imo.
@@eduardomarchant7636 mind flay would only remove stuff like fireball ticks and shadow weaving is not a wasted slot by far, although it depends on how many warlocks you run with
Thank goodness classic will be based around 1.12 like private servers are. Shadow priests won't be completely relegated to a pvp spec. Also make friends with healing druids and warlocks. They will love you in 5 man's. You boost the locks dps making up for your dps short comings and the druids don't have to worry about not having a proper rez. Also vampiric embrace makes the healers job easier since you will be providing a Hot for the entire group the entire dungeon saving them mana. Also you can always act as a perfectly adequate back up healer should your healer die.
I played on bleedinghollow as horde during warth. I was in wintergrasp and this shadow priest from the guild tasty beverage had bis gear and I could only imagine every single buff possible in the game. He instant cast devouring plague on me and crit for 85% of my hp then swd crit me to overkill by at least 50%. I said HOLY FUCK just like that from I died from 2 instant cast I will never forget seeing him and getting ready to fight only to die 2-3 seconds into the fight.

12:00 You forgot to mention that Dispersion was good in PvE because it regenerates your mana.
Also it's vital in some fights like Algalon 10 man. (WOTLK Ulduar last boss).
I disagree with how your guest viewed shadow priests during tbc. They could do insane damage if played right, just check out muqq from nihilum. He was topping the meters during their BT progression.

It seems they are NOT using vampire touch which was the main dps source of the shadow priest. I remember back then that you couldnt allow that dot to not be refreshed.

BM was? in my experience playing in retail TBC and private vanilla, Marksman was the supreme vanilla PVE specc while BM definetely was strong in pvp, and although my memory of TBC is not that greeat, i remember as though BM was also the primary PVP specc then and not the primary choice in PVE?
It’s crazy to see how the times have changed. I was top dps in my guild as a shadow priest in wrath and cata (cata being harder competition with feral Druid)

I played TBC shadow priest and during the early part I was right up there in the dmg lists. Slowly got overtaken by warlocks but even after all that time Shadow was still above average DPS with the huge upsite of nearly infinite amount of mana and heal for your group.

I thought about it but demo locks were already quite viable in vanilla, and also very powerful all through burning crusade and wrath so they're hardly underdogs.
Hamsterwheel i think they were nerfed in all wrath because a bis demo lock can't even make it to the top 10 dps with the likes of a fire mage or a fury warrior or a combat rogue etc in the raid
@@HamsterWheelGaming idk, in my guilds on wotlk servers, were demo warlock, on the top dps. I played one of them. But its big difference between blizzard wotlk times and now. Rotation is based on procs. Incinerate and soul fire. On every multitarget boss must be demo warlock on wotk on first place in dpc, because soul fire proc contine, 10 sec after death of target, so in icc he must be in top 3 dps. If not, something is wrong.

And what about demonology? They weren't really viable until BC and the Fel Guard. And even then they weren't top notch yet.
Demonology (or more specifically, the DS/Ruin build 7/21/23) was one of the highest dps builds in vanilla, so they're not exactly underdogs especially compared to things like the balance druid or the smite priest.

Maybe you are right, i barely even played the warlock, neither on retail nor on vanilla/private servers, but i can't imagine that a spec, based on damage over time, was on top end in Vanilla with its debuff slot limit.
On Kronos, in MC for example, i saw warlocks spamming shadow bolt, curse of elements and Banish, no dots. I saw Locks just casting Shadow Bolts on BC servers, e.g. in Karazhan
However, i look forward to further "Underdogs of Raiding"-Episodes featuring other cool youtubers, like HvsB^^

Don't fret Shadow Priest you were top tier even number 1 dps for most of Legion. I imagine it was because of the revamp and the new way it plays so Id expect this all the same in BFA it is far from one of the worst classes now a days.

I am wondering... in wrath att a point the healing input was really high and me and some fellows were putting up a math that if you had 2e of them in a raid it be insane. Never got around to it though
only problem, with 8 debuff slots, sw will not be up, so they where not brougthin a raid because people underestiamted them, they jsut couldnt do anything and dont provide a buff due to the 8 slots.. so that made them useless before 1.8, and even then. in classic overall

I am extremely interested to main an undead shadow priest in classic. Would anyone recomend it to me over a mage? What I love the most is that are one of the few casters in vanilla with a decent rotation to keep up and I love the dot play style (I'm not playing a lock, I already played warlock in vanilla and I hated every moment of it). I love the fact that is also very capable in pvp. I'm not worried about the somewhat mediocre dps in PVE, but this thing about burning mana quickly worries me a lot more. Is it a really big deal, can it be managed?
Spriests dont really have a DoT playstyle in Vanilla. They only have one DoT and usually arn't allowed to use it in raids due to the debuff limit. They are only there to apply the shadow weaving debuff which buffs locks. Also if the guild is really serious about min maxing they would actually take a healer who half specs into shadow and casts rank 1 mindflay to apply shadow weaving.
If you just want to raid casually you will probably find a spot but it will be hard to get into top guilds.
Almost no one had a "bunch" of warlocks in their raid. They were extremely rare.

Yeah i would like to know where you got that info. Warlock were the best dps in tbc for almsot the entire xpac. Some hardcore guild reroll to lock since they were op dps wise.

i remember when i played in wrath i saw quite alot of shadow priests in raids AND pvp, honestly when i look at this video it makes me want to play a shadow priest in classic as well. i really hope classic is gonna be the real deal and not some casualized piece of shit, i like all this in depth mastering of the class it seems to me that shadow priests arent just for anyone they are meant for people who are willing to spend time and effort in them to get the best out of them, which sounds like vanilla to me and thats why i dont want any changes to classic wow:D
you know that vanilla isn't very forgiving, neither is the community? You can try as hard as you can but people will not raid with you (except casual raiding guilds).
+Harald Topfer Did you even watch the video? He said that shadow priests were good in PvP and that one shadow priest was basically mandatory for every raiding group, so they might certainly raid with him (if he's good enough anyway).
Of course, in progression guilds, there would be no room for more than one, but not all guilds are progression guilds. There will be a large amount of casual raiding guilds who aren't aiming to get to AQ40 and Naxx.

Nice Vid, but I do not aggree with the "low" dmg in TBC... I remember quite good running 1.1 - 1.3 k DPS on some fights in SSC and TK. Not BiS equipped but still Top5 in DPS every time.
Shadow priest dps was high in t4 and early t5. Once guilds started reaching Kael and pushing into BT your dps stopped scaling. This was primarily due to the fact that spriests scaled better from pure spell power than any other class, and gear in the early parts of the game offered more shadow bonus damage than any other type. It was not uncommon for a shadow priest to have up to 100 more bonus damage from their gear.
HOWEVER, once haste and crit breakpoints became available for warlocks and several other classes, shadow priests started falling behind. I know, I raided through to BT and Hyjal, killing Archimonde but quitting before getting Illidan.
When I was in Kara and SSC/TK I was consistently top damage on nearly every fight. But once I started grouping with players that were progressively geared and pushing SSC/TK I was pushed further and further down, and the difference was STARK.

In vanilla you just went full spirit on gear and you never went oom.....In Burning crusade i raided all content as shadow priest,my guild used 2 one for a shaman party were they were spamming chain heal and one for the mages with one paladin. as a result i had perma mana tide perma bloodlust perma leatherworking drums end game gear including Skull of guldan and still i could do around 1700dps when mages did areoun 3k :( Feels bad man,
Jim Kodonikas I was top 5 dps as shadow all through TBS. and your party had full mana entire boss fight. Best spec besides enhancement shaman. Satisfying dps and best support. This unfortunately died with WOTLK

It's more efficient to have a healing priest that specced into the shadow damage debuff than having a full on Shadow Priest in raids.

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. In TBC Shadow priests with the tailoring set were top tier dps in tier 4 and early tier 5. I regularly topped dps on Gruul and early SSC/TK. Once other classes start getting tier 5 gear you fall off rather quickly but for the entire expansion two spriests was standard. Every healer wants a shadow priest in their group.
I guess your experience differs from mine. Everytime I did kara, gruul's or maggy the shadow destro locks and fire mages always reigned supreme on the damage meters and in higher tier content those shadow destro locks stayed there cause of how well geared stacked with their talents.
@@HamsterWheelGaming I was more referring to your guest Rizzanti. I suspect because he re-rolled he was probably undergeared compared to his guild and his perspective is a bit skewed. Also I'm not sure how accurate private server numbers are. Preaches video "Legacy of the Priest" (14:08) backs up my memory. I suspect if the tailoring sets weren't in the game then Spriests wouldn't be competitive at any stage of TBC.
