I agree with you that good friends around you is what really matters, but I thought the most poignant scene is at the beginning when the older couple were walking arm in arm along the street in front of you and then you followed them because they knew best about where to step as they walked through the snow and ice, then you directed them around the puddle. I was thinking about how they might have expected these years to be their time to reflect on a life well lived but instead they are having to deal with the consequences of war and a loss of basic services. People are resilient yes, but there does come a time when you shouldn't have to endure hardship. We often talk about the next generation and how they must grow up in a better place, but older people need better living conditions now.

There are many abandoned little cottages in Ukraine. There is a channel called - Hashchi (Thickets), (scruffy areas of trees). They used to make videos of them visiting these places, before the invasion. Mostly it was in Ukrainian, which I couldn't translate, and I don't speak. But it was interesting to see the places. Maybe worth checking out for someone wanting to live more off grid. The cottages had these amazing brick stoves that people cooked on. But there was often a place to sleep on as well if it got really cold, or the person was frail. Operator Starsky mentioned these stoves in one of his videos. What people did before gas and electricity. You need to check with Brandon for babushkas tips on keeping warm in the old days.
Interesting to see Kyiv, and your friends having a lovely meal together.

Here's my plov recipe. 3 chopped up white onions, 6 chopped up sweet carrots. Fry those up in vegetable oil until they are all soft. They put in the chicken (more oil if needed) and fry it up until it's brown. Then put in 2 cups of uncooked rice and 8 cloves of garlic and a tablespoon of salt. Bring to a boil until the chicken and rice are fully cooked. Voila, you have heaven!

My Emergency Kitchen consists of an outdoor cast iron oven that burns coals and wood. But I could easily put an alcohol burner in it and cook with alcohol. I also have the CampChef 3 burner gas outdoor stove and an outdoor utility sink. My emergency kit is for after hurricane use. If I were in a place where it was snowing and there was no electricity I'd be using a solar farm, wind farm and using a combination of batteries to power my appliances and using alcohol burners with Firebox to cook because that's a very clean way to make a meal with relatively inexpensive fuel.
I'd also set up an outdoor furnace that feeds hot air through a pipe that goes under the floor to heat the floor. Keep the snow off my solar panels with regular cleaning just as those who sweep the streets and sidewalks to remove snow; similarly, would do the same to keep the snow off the solar panels and I'd likely rig a heater on the panels to help melt the ice for self cleaning purposes. I'd use a minimum 400W panels daisy chained with 20 panels and not the 100 or 200 Watt panels to give 8,000 Watts of energy without a gas generator and store the excess electricity in car batteries or solar batteries for night time use so 4,000 Watts could be used during the day and 4000Watts would charge my batteries for evening use when it is dark. My priority would be lights and heating so those panels would be powering my heater, lights and when needed my electric cooking appliances.

As a disabled person I have trouble getting up but mostly downstairs and could easily fall. I really worry for disabled people in Ukraine. I have on relative there with a pegleg as he lost his leg in the afghan war during USSR times. There will be many disabled and elderly people stuck in their flats unable to go out for food and medications. Cold temperatures often affect disabled people more , some will even die from hypothermia and pneumonia due to mould in their flats.
I am sure many disabled already died in fires in the bombed buildings.
In addition some people who rely on ventilators or long term oxygen tanks are at increased risk of death.
I really dont think enough is being done to help the disabled and elderly unfortunately 😢

Can you buy blocks of parafin wax and cotton string? You can make your own candles, and use a double boiler to melt the wax. In case the toilet don't work, you could make one from a 5-gallon plastic bucket with a cover. Get some plastic trash bags that would line the bucket and a large bag of dried peat moss, just remember not to urinate in the bucket, don't mix the two together keep pee in a separate container. The peat moss will desiccate the poo, and dry it up so it won't smell bad, just put the lid on it will do fine. The toilet paper that is used goes in a separate bag, to be burned in a trash can daily. Pee you pour around trees.

I think somebody has seriously underestimated the strength and resilience of the citizens of The Ukraine. He thinks he can bring them to their knees by cutting of heat and electricity in winter. I have no doubt he is also going to attempt to do the same with the EU and any other country attempting to stop him. If he truly believes that will do anything other than strengthen everyone's resolve, he hasn't studied enough history.
Perhaps he has simply led his pampered lifestyle for far too long and believes humans can't survive, and even grow from adversity.

@@JohnnyFD forgot the coup already. That was 2014. The demand was autonomy for the Donbas and the Minsk accords. What happened to that. Implement Minsk they'd be no conflict. Meanwhile laws get passed against the Russians. Poroshenko said in 2015 the children of Ukraine will go to school. The children of Donbas will remain in their basements. Says it all. You go on about Russian propaganda winning. Among the clued up. The rest don't care anymore. They only get one side of the story. The Uki side amplified by western media. No one is buying that. The fact is since 2014, the Ukraine govt answers to its foreign sponsors not its people. Didn't zel win in 2019 on a peace with Russia plank. Did he go to Moscow and talk. No, he and his corrupt cronies kept the funds coming in and thus why things are the way they are.

I don't buy your if you don't live here you know nothing line. That applied 20 years ago. Today with social media it's different. Take that interview back in Dec you did with those ladies in the park. You asked them if a conflict was coming. They said no. But American sources knew it was coming. Why? Because in Dec putin gave the west an ultimatum which was ignored. This war was coming by those following the region. It is ironic that when you first fled Kyiv, at the beginning of the war, it was actually less dangerous and inconvenient (there was still electricity, etc.) then it is now and you felt a sense or urgency to get out. Now, missiles flying, power outages, etc. seem to be taken in stride as part of life in Kyiv, an accepted norm...is that how you feel since you have chosen to stay these days inspite of what is...

    • @JohnnyFD

Missiles are shot 90 every 2 weeks. Artillery shells are 2,000 per day which is much more dangerous. Now it's a calculated risk, while at the start of the war, no one knew what would happen.

If just I imagine me there I would be crazy. I know how is the weather there. It's terrible when you have - 22 degrees around and cold wind and snow. The situation is very hard especially into cities because there's not any field or forest. My wife lived in a small town and the family had all. In the country ukrainians are used to get supplied for the winter. There you can find cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplants, mushrooms and marmelades. The animals are a good way to receive support too. But city could be a prison. A nightmare. I hope that people create a big protest to change their political class. Muppets, fully corrupted. Say thanks to the President for this situation. It's a crime this war in both sides. Or not? When you have a country and you are without any infrastructure you are simply returning to the middleage. And debts with foreign countries? For an ukrainian now the future is dark. Why? Because however will be slave. Or of Russia or of foreign countries that are giving dollars and weapons. I would see this craziness finish. For all children especially. They deserve a better life and better future.
