    This honey bee hive removal from a giant water oak tree was done with the cooperation and help of three local bee clubs. This was just a fun Saturday morning event set up to help new beekeepers or anyone thinking about doing any hive removals see what was actually involved in this kind of work. If this didn't scare them away from hive removals nothing will. This was about as difficult a removal from a tree as we could have possibly found. It was not our intention to make this out be be a big ordeal. That is just what this one turned out to be. We hadn't been able to pinpoint the location of the hive in the tree prior to that morning. We even tried using the FLIR ONE thermal camera and making several plunge cuts. The tree was too thick to use the infrared to locate the hive. It just turned into three hours of work in the blazing heat with the small reward of only a partial hive removal.
    As we began the work of chain sawing and got the first big chunk cut out of the tree it reminded several of us of Geraldo Rivera cutting open Capone's vault. All the buildup and NOTHING! LOL
    We had a dozen or so people show up with some coming from an hour or more away. Most of the attendees had to leave before we even reached the first comb section so they didn't get to see anything but a bunch of chainsaw work. The good part was we got to see some old friends and make some new acquaintances.
    Thank you to everyone who participated. Recorded 9/10/2016

    Hey Dirt Rooster, Just a short note to let you and your viewers know how I feel about cutting down bee trees. It is a terrible attitude that some people have towards the bees.If you find a bee tree ,cut it down and get the bees for your self. Let's start a movement among us beekeepers, to save all bee trees so they can replenish the wild population. We can catch swarms all day long but let's leave the trees so the bees can live somewhat naturally. You are doing a great service with your videos. Thanks, Glenn Powell. Beekeeper for 35 years.

      Glenn Powell I'd think it would be beneficial for the tree to have the bees chewing and waterproofing the dead inside parts of the tree.
      Is the tree dead yet? Will the bees leave when the tree dies?

  • @JeffHorchoff
    @JeffHorchoff 7 ปีที่แล้ว +49

    If you had used your light saber to cut that tree it would have been opened in 4 swipes and the comb would be staring you right in your face. The best part would be that you could NEVER pour oil in the gas tank, light sabers only use lasers. Also, when honey gets on the saber, I wouldn't advise licking it off, they are not as forgiving as a camera. Luke Skywalker

    Question: just bought a house with a 200 year old oak tree in my backyard that has an old tree-house that needs to be redone on the top of it. We have a beehive in there that is said to have been there for 15 years. Do you think the tree could crumble and give out from the bees ruining the inside?

    • @628DirtRooster

      The bees would actually preserve the area they are occupying by sealing everything with propolis.

      @RaithSienar 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      628DirtRooster
      Huh, I figured since we get such mild winters here in the Mississippii/Louisiana area that it would be a bit higher than that.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RaithSienar We can have about the same loss ratios but just for different reasons. Our bees stand a better chance of starving and dying from age and wear more so than northern bees since our bees fly most of the winter when there isn't much to forage on. Northern bees stay in the hive more and use up less food stores.

    I used to cut down a lot of trees for firewood and I accidently poured bar oil into a gas tank once myself, easy fix though. When you're hot and wore out it's a mistake that can be made, I only did it once though. Would have liked to see the inside of that tree where the colony was. One of my worst feelings about cutting down trees was cutting down a 40ft tall dead standing oak in February to see a bee colony up near the top of the tree. The Temps were in the low 20's and I knew they had no way of surviving when that part busted open. It was the worst I ever felt cutting down a tree!

    Great show. Cool to see several people all taking a little crack at it. Really neat that you could make a project like this into more of an event that other interested parties could attend to observe (and participate in). Nice looking oak, can any of it be used for purposes other than just burning it?

      @628DirtRooster  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It turned out to be pretty fun even though the removal didn't go as planned.
      The remains of that tree could make some pretty cool lumber if we had a portable mill. It will likely all end up as firewood though.

      anyway I'm always interested in the bees as apiary is a way of keeping the planet healthy. what tips can you offer to the first time want to get into bee keeping sort who isn't exactly used to sting pain please?

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      stuckintraffic?getabike! The more you get accustomed to handling the bees the less you'll crush them and the less you'll stir them up and make them mad. You'll probably get used to the stings pretty quick. They don't hurt that bad depending on your pain tolerance. I think the fear of the sting is much worse that the sting. Anywhere in the head hurts and finger and palm stings hurt. Not bad though. Get the best smoker you can find and wear a suit until you are comfortable without one.

    Do "Smoke Pots" (I think that's what you call them) work on yellow jackets(& other wasps too) like they do on honey bees? Also, I'm always going after "Black Widow" spiders. Just after dark is when they come out. Weapon of choice(use w/much care) can of WD40 aerosol and a Bic. Additional tool is a flash with red lense! From my amatuer use, they can't see in that spectrum(red) of light. So I have the advantage because I can see them w/out them seeing me. Wondering how this(just the latter idea, not the WD40 and BIC lighter trick, too many)might work with wasps?

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They recognize that there is smoke but it doesn't work the same on them.

    • @rickallman1318
      @rickallman1318 6 ปีที่แล้ว
