“Leica. It’s cool, it’s too expensive. Video? I don’t know. Here’s some advertising. Hey wait did you see my leather jacket?”. Geez Pete, that was one hell of a waste of time. Thanks.
Agreed, it’s reminds me of CNN where 80% of the time they are telling you about the news you are about to get...
@@jmlepunk and yet you’re still here.
@@MotoJerg44 Derp.
Agree, but reminds me more of like a short film recreation of the Hollywood blockbuster “Brokeback Mountain,” but with cameras included. So basically Peter is bi-sexual and switched to Leica? Hmm! Now I know why I stopped watching. It was when he complained on a podcast that carrying a 100-400mm lens was too heavy for him. I guess I’m no longer in his target audience. Or am I being too harsh?
@@patricksmith2553 🤣🤣🤣🤣
He says “I dont know why I bought it” about a camera kit that costs $8k the same way I say “I dont know why I bought it” after buying a dollar soda from a vending machine
This Comment! hahahaha
It’s more about posing than taking good photographs. It’s rather nonsensical.
When your a professional photographer, you are looking for new methods...new ways to express your work. Leica's are legendary for connecting the artist to the photos through a more deliberate process...especially in the M series of cameras
Pete was the first photographer I followed on Instagram and TH-cam when I started this journey 5 years ago. Now I've built a side hustle where photography is key, met amazing people, shot international bands and this is just the beginning. I don't know if he'll see this but thanks for inspiring me to commit to a hobby and make it into a passion.
That’s awesome man. It’s quite the achievement!
Good on you Hugh. What do you think was the most important element which made this journey over 5 years work for you?
Glad to hear that brother. Wish you the best of luck for the future too.
I have Christmas package for you🎉🎊
@@oliscurra hey mate, it might sound cliche but I just really enjoy the process. Planning, shooting, editing, and helping people grow their business... It just excites me and gives me a chance to be creative outside my regular office job. The first time I booked a 5 figure contract flipped a switch and made me realise it wasn't just a hobby anymore.
I was a photographer in the late 1960s and 1970s. In those days, Leicas were more expensive than the competing cameras but only about 25 to 50 percent. I still have a price list from a store where I worked: Nikon F with lens - $388. Leica M3 with lens $513.
So Leicas were expensive but not prohibitive. And you could always find lightly used ones for much less.
I used film Leicas for years, without feeling either robbed, or ashamed to be seen with one. Today they have a kind of Poseur aura about them. "I have a Leica, so I'm a real photographer. And rich."
Over the years, Nikon and Canon prices have increased with inflation, but Leicas have increased as "Veblen goods," where demand increases as the price increases. So now, if a Nikon is $2000, a Leica is $8000. Or even more for multiple "Special Editions." And the lens prices are worse.
Leicas are very very good, but 4 or 5 times as good as a Nikon?? Measured by results? Nah.
A Leica doesn’t make you Cartier Bresson. And in his photos there is nothing special about technology. Sharpness... doesn't matter in is photos. The real strengh is elsewhere
You’ve nailed it there.. 🙂👍
You're wrong. See how much the flagship Nikon or Fuji costs. They cost $5000-6000. Fuji gfx100II costs $7500.
Totally agree. When the M9 came out I decided to switch from Canon and get the Leica and some primes.
The M9 body cost €6,300 and it was faulty straight out of the box (rangefinder was off).
Shop returned it to Leica and two months later it still hadn't been fixed or replaced, so I ended up going for Fuji and haven't changed brand since.
I ended up selling the Leica primes as well because I found them to be no better than the Fuji lenses.
In over 40 years of photography I have never bought a new film or digital camera that was faulty apart from Leica.
I get the impression that Leica users rave about them because when they fork out huge sums of money to own one they 'must' be great, right?
jesus how much promotion can you cram into one video? barely talked about the leica at all
One reason why Leica cameras are generally more expensive (apart from the branding) is because they are traditionally handmade and extensively tested in Germany and not Vietnam or China. This also leads to a limited amount of cameras that can be bought.
Here for this. Leica is essentially a small family company and their products are worth the price tag. Not many camera companies can boast their products have survived since the 1920’s like Leica.
I believe most Canon cameras are made in Japan. The scale is likely much larger, but still.
They still suck at new features and everyday use tho.
@@yuvtube1 A penetrating and well rounded insight, thank you
Totally agree with you, and there are more reasons why Leica is so expensive and worth it.
I’m into my 6th decade of shooting, and I’ve used or had most systems. I’ve owned Leica cameras for about 25 years now including film and digital full-frame and medium format. I’ve got bin after bin filled with photos shot with Japanese cameras, some of which I love. But then there’s Leica with the build quality, ease of use, and superior glass. I really like shooting my S glass on my SL system as it gives it a nice pop and rendering. I also like shooting Hasselblad glass on my S. My most recent Leica purchase was a 120mm 5.6 tilt shift. I was shooting a few shots in Charleston yesterday with good results.
Can we take some time to appreciate the dope leather jacket Peter has on. The color alone just pops.
IKR? I came here to comment the same thing!

It’s master supply co! Go check em out
animals shouldn’t be slaughtered for clothes. i’ll wear leather but only if it’s recycled or thrifted
I wanna know where the jacket he wore 2 video’s ago comes from (camera bag giveaway video). Brand, webshop,…?
2:26 "i don't really know why i bought it." Thats the Leica spirit.
I’ve been a Leica m shooter for 4 years now. It is expensive but I saved up for it. Used it with my Sony gear side by side but after I became confident in manual focus and using it more I sold the Sony. Now I shoot leica only. I love it.
Almost the same experience for me, except that after trying a Q2 out, I sold all my Sony gear and the Q2 to fund a Leica M with a single 50mm Summicron. I used to take thousands of photos with my other cameras that I don't even bother looking at afterwards because all it took was press a button. Now I only have about a hundred photo taken a year. But all are deliberately taken and I love them.
You should put a progression bar on those ads to know where to skip them
Then there would be a bar over the whole episode 😂
It’s good to be friends with Peter Dutton 🤠
Peter Dutton is the opposition leader in Australia 🤮 but I’m pickin up what you’re putting down! 🐴
Peter we need this consistency to last throughout the next year!!!!!LOVE IT!!!
Peter Mckinnon isn't making videos anymore, he is just making ads all the time. His channel it's not authentic any more.
Peter. Your style evolution is just EEEEVERYTHING
FujiFilm cameras are a great alternative to the Leica analog vibes in way more affordable price range :)
X100V all the way.
The Q2 is literally in my BH cart, you’re guna make me pull the trigger 🤯
Anyone else feel like Pete's living out his inner Arthur Morgan (from Red Dead Redemption 2) in this video with those fits? Dude looks amazing in those jackets holy shit!! Amazing video as always!!
Totally agree with your last statement regarding price. I recently was finally able to afford and justify a used Leica Q, and I absolutely LOVE it. Such a dream camera in every way. But it took me about 5 years to be able to find a good enough deal, and be able to justify the cost; especially for it not being my main camera (EOS R for video).
I haven’t used a camera that I loved more than the Leica Q, and it’s absolutely worth the Leica price tag to me; but it is a shame it took that long to get even a used relatively entry-level Leica in my hands.
This is my favorite PM vid in a while. Maybe it's a combination of the aesthetic and sound design or most probably the curiosity and passion you have to try something different (camera-wise).
Yep same
Was thinking the same 'bout the whole aesthetic thing too. And I agree.
It feels like a video from 2013, when the whole movement of modern photographers was all new and everyone was inspired by each other -- and supporting!
Been shooting canon for over 10 years. Just got a X100V and haven’t touched my full set up since. The convenience, and still being able to get insane results (some that I like even better) is a no brainer. That being said I do understand the ease of use factor isn’t there for high pressure shooting.
Leica is love! I startet 2019 with a used Q, and today I’m a proud and happy owner of a M10 and SL2S. This are the best build quality cameras I’ve ever used. And I used Canon, Fuji, Lumix, BlackMagic. Shooting with a Leica gives you so much the feeling of having a tool in your hands 😍
I totally agree, I've shot Canon, Fuji, Sony, Nikon. Nothing compares to using Leica
Truth is you can get a lot of the photos from any other camera, but the Leica's have a big impact on the how and of course then there's the fact that it's basically the best glass ever designed by human beings. M10 is a great camera. So is the SL2-S!!
The feel is solid too, I think just well made.
Within reason don’t mind paying for well made stuff that’s simple and just works well
They still suck at new features and everyday use tho.
Just grab your other tool and be done with.
Random curiosity, am I the only one that would love to see a side series using cheap photo gear and doing thematic episodes?
It’s so clear Peter set himself up to bag the Leica. He knew exactly why he bought it and why he made the video! It’s clear he doesn’t understand it, nor does he want to. It’s just a more popular consensus to dislike it to connect with the broader community who don’t use it.
Pete getting pulled over and searched anytime he's got those jackets on ❄️ George Jung vibes
How are these videos so good. So smooth.
Any chance you can share your full setup (background, lighting, camera, lens, distance from shot etc.) during the desk narrating footage (with you in the cool orange/tan leather)? And...if its not too much to ask...(?)..a small piece of footage of this prior to your color treatment.
I use a R6 and absolutely love it. My daily and primary driver. I've went down the Leica rabbit hole and dove into the history of this camera system. And in my curiosity, I started to figure out on how can I get my hands on one since I live in Northwest BC where there are no camera shops. So I decided to take a risk and I purchased a Leica D-Lux 7. When I received it, I got a shot of buyers remorse but returning it was not an option. So, I dove into it...What a fun little camera. The construction is solid and feels good in the hands. It does have a bunch of quirks the the pics I have been able to get out of it has been fantastic. Doing side by side comparisons with my R6 has been educational and awakening. I can just imagine what a Q2 or the SL2 could do. Thanks for the video Peter!
@@LUITESLIFE hahahahahaha
@@LUITESLIFE I call it my Chinese Leica!
@@LUITESLIFE I never tried it as I used m43, but the lens I read reviews of, it was one of the best fixed lens walkabout cameras ever made. Only the Sony full frame one really surpassed it measurably.
@@LUITESLIFE In my case I'll stick to my gm5. Managed to get one in Japanese and figured out the menus (thank God panasonic has the best menu system). Utterly adore it. Now I lowkey Hate panasonic for failing to release a new gm5
Pete what jacket are you wearing in this (the "go to bed with it" jacket at 5:20)? Is it the Grimshaw Roughneck or plain Grimshaw? Killer jacket.
I tuned in, immediately was introduced to an endless sales pitch for your friends leather goods…and…tuned out.
Make ads OR real content.
Cheers
I did shoot with Leicas since 20 years. When my son did grow up and began to be interested in fotography he purchased a Leica. We are not rich people. You do not need much money for having a Leica. You can purchase a used analog Leica R7 (SLR) for 300€ and a 50 mm Summicron-R Lens for about 400-500€. Is this a lot of money?
Greetings from Germany - Andreas
This is the Level I'm aiming to achieve with my videos one day. Everything feels so professional and intentional. Love it
So washed and kardashian like it’s content but not actual content? Pete l’s been reduced to nothing but a brand junkie at this point, I often forget that he was ever a a photographer to begin with. It’s all about what can he push to milk some views anymore, he’s lost his way.
I have an M4 film camera, paid $2200 USD for the body alone. I completely agree about the prices and how expensive they are, but I do swear by it because the build quality is outstanding so it will last a lifetime and more!
Thanks Peter! Us 'too poor for Leica' folks navigate straight to the top-dial blessed Fuji cameras, with their gorgeous JPEG recipes and crispy, compact lenses :)
I really really love the Leica design, but I think I will stick around with Fuji for a while yet. It is such a joy to use
I'm sticking with fuji. I think Leica only makes sense for people who make money off the shots. Otherwise, what's the point of spending close to 10K if not more on your hobby device? Buy into fuji system at xe2 (200$) with a good prime lens, then spend 1k on a photography class, I bet you'll get more out of that than if you jump feet first into a leica system.
As a guy who shoots booth photo and video, the Fuji XH-2/s have really piqued my interest. Held one at the shop the other and loved how it felt.
@@Christo_glenn True. Those are fantastic. But too industrial for the things I love about Fuji. Personally, X-T5 is where I would go :)
There are always more affordable ways to get into some Leica system. That‘s especially true with the L-mount and the flexibility of using Sigma or really any glass. I‘m using a CL which is APS-C but gives me most things I want from a camera. Some film shooters even get into the old R line. So not all prices are sky high.
100% agree with you Pete. I normally shoot with a Canon R5 and R6, however a couple years ago, starting shooting film again. One of my favorite cameras is a nearly 40 year old Canon AE-1. Granted it's not a Leica, but this transcends far beyond the brand stamped on a camera body, this is all about slowing down and enjoying every click and all the adjustments and thought that goes into each one. Bravo bud, see you in the next video!
I’m learning English, I like a lot to listen to you. I am glad when I can understand some words. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
There's a joy that felt lost during the pandemic in doing the videos, I think Peter being an outdoor person was missing out and you could tell by hte videos, good to see that that feel is back in the videos.
My father said to me: "You know...Sony, Canon, Nikon...these cameras are computers with the ability to shoot photos. But Leica...Leica is a feeling."
I always thought this was stupid. But I am converting more and more from Sony to Leica. The Leica experience is just more fun and it makes me want to shoot more.
nonsense
I’ve look on the leather vest website. And sorry but the « designed in Canada but made in Pakistan » when you know the work conditions (like India for leather) it’s a no go. I think peoples are ready to pay a honest price for a full made in Canada /USA jacket.
I feel like I need to know where you bought that thumb grip for the sl2! Been looking for a while but haven’t found any
amazing how you can make an 11-min video without actually saying anything substantive!
Hey Peter! I know what you mean about feeling like you’re relearning all over again. I recently switched from Sony to Fujifilm and it’s like I’m starting from scratch again. It made it fun again and trying out the film simulations has been a real joy. Most say it’s a downgrade because the autofocus is not the best but after learning more on some focusing, it’s really helped! Love this journey your on and it’s an inspiration for sure. Have you ever considered testing a Fujifilm? Since you’ve become so big on 35mm film and just widening your learning experiences with different cameras and brands and styles!
To each his own, but I returned my Q2 after 3 weeks. The hype over that camera is criminal. I really like the setting and feel of this video Peter, awesome job
I also sold mine after 3 months. I sold a M10 initially to fund the Q2 Reporter...but I quickly got back to M10-P after the Q2 disappointment.
Out of interest, what were you expecting it to do other than take photos like any other camera?
@@alexauga I personally expected more accurate AF, and also expected more M-like manual focus experience. Did not expect such abysmal distortion, files are huge for no reason (41mpix M10-R has 40-45mb files, 47mpix Q2 has 85-90mb) and more
Which model do you use in the Leica video ?
I am confused.
You said the same things about epidemic that you now said about artlist somehow
As always an amazing video from Pete!!! saludos desde México!!!
The best part of Leica is it forces you to slow down and focus on the image, vs just shooting 100 shots and hoping one turned out.
Your jacket game is strong. Where is that leather coat from?
We need Leica Q3 with 50mm lens option, anything between 40-50mm
At 2:55 it's so clear one of the new Canon's are being used, why are they so fking distorted!!? WTF!
I was a sports photographer for 35 years, stopped when the pandemic started, sold everything, but miss it now.
I shoot with Leica SL2/SL2-S professionally. Switched from Canon and haven't looked back, I definitely prefer the experience using my Leicas, and being able to adapt my M lenses to the SL2/SL2-S are huge for me. Been using them for a while and just started creating content with/on them on my channel. Getting into Leica is a unique experience and opens a lot of cans of worms, but ultimately I love the look of the image and the experience is better than any cameras I've used. It's cool to see people like Peter getting into the system!
crazy how powerful the placebo effect can be!
love your channel too ;-)
@@mementography Thank you!!
So dope to hear you rocking to Casey Parnell! I was just shooting one of Thunderstorm Artis's concert he performed at. We had dinner before the gig - he really is a great dude.
How can you tell someone shoots Leica? They’ll tell you.
😂
Leica is about making ergonomic tools, not stacking tech.
Their goal is about making the camera disapear in your hands to let your mind flow through your creativity, not pixel picking or other bullshit.
It's about poetry, not caligraphy.
They understand it 100 years ago and are still the only one at their level today.
Sony almost got it with the A7 mk1 a few years ago but they get straight back to the spec sheet opsesion afterward.
Fuji are probably the second best today but they have no compact full frame system 😢
I have Christmas package for you🎉🎊
Where do you get your cloths? You should do a video on that!
Holy Buck, never seen Peter so dripped. This video definitely SLAPS
Is it possible to show a raw file before and after photo editing
Cheers
So it took 10m 35s of shilling and advertising to get to the "unfortunate truth" about Leica, which is that it is really expensive. And the full reveal took 10 seconds. I thought I was about to learn something provocative. Thanks for nothing.

So what's the difference between Epidemic Sound and Artlist? I have used ES for 2 years... should I switch things up?
I carry and Olympus EPL 5 almost everywhere I go. I bought it used for $154 US. it usually has a 14 mm Panasonic mounted that I bought used for $100. It's 16 megapixels. The photos look great.
Yes - when you posted the picture first reaction was Yellowstone. My order of Little King Goods camera strap is caught up in the British postal strike with my PPL gear. Still not getting a Leica.

if you want to experience a film like feeling, without Leica money, go and grab yourself a Fujifilm camera. its the poor mans Leica. sick jacket and sick video Peter!
LOL, Yellowstone needs you to DP an episode. 2023 goals!
Can we get an artlist pack of Peter Mckinnon (mouth) sound effects
It is unfortunate that Leica cameras are insanely priced. But, their glass is simply sublime. I have shot with an M8 for 12 years with "genuine" Leica M lenses and the images those lenses produce are really magical in comparison to my Canon and Sony lenses. It's not just about how tack sharp they are, but also their rendering of the image across the board, and their bokeh is just gorgeous. I've now an M240 that has been with me for five years and the full frame sensor is also quite gorgeous, albeit different than the M8 CCD sensor. I actually prefer the M8 CCD images, but the M240 is still a pleasure in full frame. But while the body will come and go, the M lenses will stay with me forever and outlast me. They are built like miniature tanks. I know people buy Leica bodies and put 3rd party lenses on them to save money, but please...that's the wrong way to go. Even if it means more time saving, make sure to get the genuine Leica lenses....it's 100% the reason to shoot Leica.
In this case, you're getting what you paid for. Its a good thing Leica is more expensive.
Eh, I honestly have seen equal results from many brands and the OM series Zuiko lenses being a major stand out amongst film.
There's a website somewhere where they blind tested the CCD vs non-CCD and it's really impossible to tell most of the time.
After shooting Fuji X-T for 7 years, I swallowed hard and switched to Leica early in 2022. I have the SL2 and SL2-S (and night sweats about the price). But damn, do I love shooting with them. Everything Peter said about the detail and sharpness is true. Moving to my 'aspirational' brand rekindled my love of shooting. I'll enjoy them even more when the night sweats stop.
would love to see you shoot on a hasselblad instead. the real beast of a camera
PM back with a vengeance. Crushing it. More like this!
When is the PM Preset Leica Pack coming out tho??? =D
The new jacket gives me Leon vibes from Resident evil 4 🤘🏼
I once thought I was too poor to ever afford Leica but then I worked out that I was still spending a lot on miscellaneous 'cheap' cameras and I if I added up what I spent on them then it would be a lot in the long run. Long story short, set yourself like 5-10 years to buy one and you'll get there. Maybe.
I'll never be able to afford this but loved the video (and shots). The biggest thing that grabbed me from the entire video was this comment, "It's just about the art ... I love this craft"
Best pictures! Great episode! Love the SL2-S.
I would love to get a Leica, but for us who don't make money or a living from our photography, the price puts it pretty much out of reach, or very hard to justify the premium over a Canon.
I ran an M7 with 50mm f1.4 summilux about 10 years ago. Lens quality is incredible, no question. But I found the camera to be a bit stupid to be honest. RF patch flare rendering it inoperable, slow, all sorts of issues. That was the peak of their film cameras and I wouldn't take them seriously for digital. I think most people will have idea like yours that they're missing out, it's better, but simply unattainable and nevermind. I did try one out, wasn't impressed at all, sold it and was satisfied that I just think they're rich people's play things, for Billionaire's teenagers to carry around like jewelry in Switzerland.
I have the Leica S and I didn't plan to shoot video with it either. Go ahead and try it. The colours are...just cool. Every once in a while I'll shoot some video off the cuff and look at it a few weeks later. It's very unique.
Great vid Pete! The SL2s didn’t really replace the SL2. Main differences are the SL2 has 47mp vs the 24mp on the SL2s….the SL2s has better video specs mainly because of the 24mp sensor. Killer jackets, killer shots…hope to see the strap he made you soon.
SL2 is also weather sealed
Finally. ;-) welcome to the club. all that's missing now is the M!
Yet again! to another level! Where are you heading pete !!
Ive had one digital Leica for over five years, it's totally addictive, I do my walk about with a 90mm and I love it. I do not understand why it is.
I can see Pete growing a big ass beard and just being a vibe lol
Great Video, great "Vibe"... Only thing I'm missing is to see the endresult of the camera strap, which seems to be awsome.
Cool video and great pics 👍🏻 At the end of the video PM is scrolling thru some raw Photos, are you LrC or LR? Which would you recommend? Thinking of switching back from CaptureOne.😊
Great video, actually watched it a second time :D
though, never got to see the finished camera strap in it's full glory.
Such a beautiful camera, but the SL2 and not the M11?
The footage is so crisp and clean. Love it. Well done, again.
All I could think about watching this video about Leica is how good the (presumably R5) Canon video is.
😂 And how good HE is
Great shots.
A lot of photographers says the same about Fujifilm. The budget friendly Leica ;)
Exactly. I’m not saying I wouldn’t want to own a Leica. But for now my Fuji X-Pro2 (and adopted legacy primes) give me that pleasure of the experience of doing photography.
I need one of these to vlog with , my R5 isn’t cutting it.
Love the Leica aesthetic for sure.. but overpriced is an understatement.. most people can't justify the price
I got to shoot with Lane for Master Supply Co a few years ago. Super dope dude! Nice to this collab on camera!
Giveaway package..........
I have the EXACT two cameras. I love them! The SL2 S can do some great video, but it has some draw backs for that.
Love the honest opinion of this camera, Pete. Great video, great audio, keep up the great work!
if I had the schmeckles to afford a Leica that gun metal green is an instant buy - but I'm still in my chip on the shoulder phase of photography because I go months without taking pictures and still scoff at the prices of Sony/Cannon/Nikon mirrorless SLRs ...and damn those jackets are snazzzzyyy
I am a Leica shooter and think the reason to shoot Leica is all in the lens. Their color science is great but honestly the glass is top notch and I would encourage Peter to use his Leica glass for video. if you like how the phots come out you'll love the video just as much! I used the Leica Q for two years straight and it was amazing to bring everywhere and to every shoot. I would recommend to shooters who are interested in Leica to save up for a lens and use that on your body of choice. Leica class pairs nicely with Sony. :)
You speak the truth!! Put Leica glass in front of any sensor and its like sprinkling some fair dust on that sensor. It's all in the glass. Which Leica's are you shooting?
I really want that Roughneck jacket. My god, that thing is incredible!
Now you need the M10-P reporter to complete the set 🤩
