"Charlie the Houseboy" was specifically created for these TV cartoons (this was first seen in 1961), and was also present in Pete Alvarado's syndicated comic strip version in the mid-'60s.
It would be fun to have a birthday party with Mr Magoo and Charlie we would have a fun time doesn't anyone else would like to have a party with Mr Magoo and Charlie I know there cartoon characters but it would be fun playing games and drinking so much pop you need to go to the bathroom I'm from Australia I love watching Mr Magoo!!!!!
lol dang all these comments lol ... when you're a kid watching these shows you don't really seem to pay attention to things like adults do lol this show was before my time but came on in reruns and was also put on vhs and I LOVED IT ..thanks for posting this video :)
lol! my teacher showed us this video today in class. i loved it so i'm watching another 1. i like the cartoons the teachers used to watch when they were little.
I remember an episode where Magoo wanted to barbeque something, and he accidentally took fireworks out of the shed rather than charcoal, and Charlie yells "Boss! Boss! (PC version) The fireworks! The fireworks!!" And Magoo acknowledges "Yes, Charlie, I know the fire works.
When these cartoons were reran on the USA Network weekday mornings from 1989 to 1990 [under the title "Mr. Magoo And Friends", it also showed segments from The Gerald McBoing Boing Show and the 1977-1978 DePatie-Freleng produced What's New, Mr. Magoo? series] Charlie's voice was redubbed to an English accent by 2 anonymous voice actors [one with a deep voice and one with a scratchy voice, neither fit the character]!!
The PC gestapo at Turner has dubbed in the voice of the black woman (seen only from the knees down) in the classic MGM Tom and Jerry cartoons. I read an interview with that actresses (whose name slips my mind now) granddaughter who said her grandmother would be outraged that her voice was cut out. She was proud of her work on those cartoons, because of the joy it gave to children. Ted Turner should be ashamed for cutting her voice out.
Lillian Randolph. She had a career outside of doing the voice of Dinah the maid in the Tom and Jerry cartoons. She was Annie the maid in It's A Wonderful Life, which airs on network television every year during Christmastime. She was Bessie the maid in The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer. She was Birdie (sp?) the maid in the Great Gildersleeve movies. (And I assume she was in the radio series as well.) A couple of years ago I saw her in one of the Mexican Spitfire movies on Turner Classic Movies. And she was Sapphire's Mama in the Amos & Andy TV series.
Still like to hear the late Mr Jim Backus. I still recall old Mr Howell from Gilligan's Island !!! I used to see this cartoon in French, 3 different voices: canadian comedians Ronald France and Jean-Claude Robillard, and France's expert vocalist Roger Carel...
I haven't seen these since I was a child in the 60's. Thanks for including the beginning and ending themes as well. I personally don't feel the political incorrectness here is significant and I hope no one takes offense. The stereotyped character was actually playing a positive role, helpful to his boss, apparently a hard-working immigrant, so I don't see the issue. Ethnic features, dress, and accent don't seem to have been meant to be demeaning here - just basic facts, so I believe that feeling this was a slur is just an overreaction in an over-sensitized world. I am also ethnic and do not take offense to such characterizations UNLESS they stereotype behavior or negatively exaggerate features. So, to everyone, I simply say enjoy this pleasant memory from childhood.
"Actually playing a positive role" "Don't seem to have been meant to be demeaning here" Do you realize the fact that the whole joke behind Charlie is how he sees all of Mr. Magoo's mistakes but doesn't call them out due to his subservience?
Thats awesome. Does anyone remember another 60's/70's cartoon with a little mexican dude(human) with a big sombrero..cant remember the name of it but it had an amazing style?? grr!
My wild guess would be Go Go Gomez in the Dick Tracy cartoons that were made around the same time by the same studio that made these Mr. Magoo cartoons. th-cam.com/video/azzDe-CJsCU/w-d-xo.html
Until sometime in the 80's, TV stations were provided 16mm prints from a company called PAT. It's only due to private collectors snatching these up when the stations went entirely to tape that prints of rare TV shows exist at all. My question is, what happened to PAT's masters? Their prints typically contained all the original bumpers, teases for the next episode and so forth. Yet most DVD releases lack these nostalgic extras. How careless this industry is!
Strangely, the DVD is a mix where some are the original untouched, un-PC versions and others are dubbed. Apparently they pulled the source material from different places. Did they actually not notice or not care? Were they too lazy to look harder for all the original versions? "Magoo's Surprise Party" on the DVD is the PC version which is the main reason I left this version posted following the release. If I was able to find an original print, though a number of years ago, why couldn't they?
Oddly enough when UPA's Dick Tracy cartoons were reran in syndication in the summer of 1990 [to promote the release of Warren Beatty's live action Dick Tracy movie] Joe Jitsu's voice was left untouched, I guess USA thought Charlie's voice was offensive and the syndicators didn't? Of course many local stations pulled the episodes with him in it [and the Mexican character Go Go Gomez] in protest, so somebody was offended!!
I agree that all this political correctness is a bunch of "hooey". These are the cartoons of our youth, and we should see them, and others need to know the history. These may not have been the best Magoo cartoons, and whathaveyou, but, it should be there for us.
@Bogframe smart and resourceful AND cute, especially with THAT voice, and it was MR. MAGOO who was the shitty driver, which also shoots holes in any logic behind accusations of racism.
Show a character with an accent and people accuse you of racism. Bullshit. Charlie was smart and resourceful, he just happened to have a heavy chinese accent. Get over it and yourselves.
people need to build a bridge and get over it about racist cartoons. You dont hear the irish complaining that they always make the police men in american cartoons have cork accents do you? People are to sensitve
@imaneightiesbaby You take it wrong. I'm Jewish. I've seen a lot of Jewish stereotypes, and while I find some of them offensive, I'd take more offense if the characteristics of my race were blurred into something less than the sum of their parts.
When I was a kid, Charley was one of my favourite characters. I found out the story behind the character of Charley (look it up on the Internet) and I didn't like it. They could have remade him better once the complaints came out about his character, then they could have let him stay on the show. Anyone know where to find the one where Mr. Magoo goes to the fountain of Youth and Charley thinks he turned into a baby?
The "fountain of youth" MR. MAGOO television cartoon appears as the first cartoon on disk three of the MR. MAGOO TELEVISION COLLECTION. Pick it up, and you'll see a lot of the uncensored titles. It is unfortunate that the censored ones are there, too, but at least you'll have most of the uncensored ones as well as some interesting WALDO AND PRESLEY cartoons that probably were never shown on TV.
You got to be smoking crack if you think the cartoon equivalent of somebody saying "haha blind man can't see how funny haha blind" over and over again for 4-5 minutes straight is funny in the first place.
In the Magoo DVD set that was FINALLY released, most of the cartoons are intact while others (including "Magoo's Surprise Party") have Charlie dubbed in an awkward all-too-caucasian voice (which should be more insulting!). I don't get it? In the compiling process, did someone not notice the difference between the original and re-issue versions, or were they too lazy to seek out all the originals?
When these cartoons were originally released on DVD by Classic Media, supposedly the "original masters" for some of the cartoons with "Charlie" couldn't be found. Then they were released on DVD a second time by Shout Factory, along with all of the other made-for-TV Mr. Magoo cartoons. Shout Factory said that they wanted to release all of the cartoons with "Charlie" with their original soundtracks. And they probably could have tracked down old 16mm prints like you did. But Shout Factory just slapped on what they got from Classic Media, just like they did with their Casper DVD set. (Shout Factory has dropped the ball on all of the DVD releases of old cartoons they've handled: Casper, Mr. Magoo, Underdog and Tennessee Tuxedo. I have not bought any of them.)
I loved the character Charlie. Is it not equally insensitive to show the dumb Irish cop character. Come on people, let's take back our sense of humor in this country.
I also suspect that the people behind these DVD releases are too young to remember these shows and figure that the first print they find is all there is. I know this because I recently interviewed for a job at a company that releases on DVD, among other things, vintage films. Virtually everyone there was 20-something. Can you say age discrimination? Yet a caricature like Charlie is considered far more scandalous! How pathetic!
Politically Incorrect Who freakin cares it is a Riot and People have to realize that it is only a CARTOON it has no effect on real life at all.If they don't like it change the channel or don't watch it.
A wonderful cartoon series from my youth. Some years ago, I bought a VHS tape of Mr. Magoo cartoons. Unfortunately, Charlie's voice was re-dubbed to a more politically acceptable style. It sucked! Does anyone know if this series is available on DVD as it was originally aired (politically incorrect)?
its terrible to voice over these classics, Charleys appearance is just as PC-incorrect as his voice so change his clothes too, why youre at it how about Abu from The Simpsons?
Great! I love the old classic Magoo cartoons!
Thank you so much for uploading this. Being extremely nearsighted myself, I absolutely LOVE watching Mr. Magoo! He's a riot and always will be!
I Love Old Cartoons 😂😎😍
I'm 56 and watched them as a kid. And I still watch them.

this oldie cartoon is so stupid its hilarious my mom is beside me giggling about it every once in a while in the cartoon
Cuando tradujeron Mr. Magoo al castellano escogieron muy bien al traductor, pues su voz es muy parecida al que habla inglés.
MisahMagloo,I so sorry bloss!!!I think i met this dude on the I 95 south bound in NJ(blind)
I remember they showed these in the 80s. They dubbed Charlie with a different voice so he came off as less racist,
Sucks thay they can't have humor anymore. Nothing offensive unless you're a crazy over the top leftist.
Happy birthday 😂❤
There is no way Magoo is only 39.
Awesome
Great!!
Different sound effects were used in the intro.
