I’m sorry, but everybody knows this. Everybody’s known this for 20 years. There’s only about 1 million articles written about her sounding like Billie Holiday.
Live, she has no charisma whatsoever. Nobody's home. I have never seen a duller performer on a stage. In fact she's so dull it's depressing. Her early work was charming but then came Bare Bones. She is so off pitch in the entire album that it's hard to believe she got away with it. I get the feeling that what we've heard is the best of what she has to give, sadly.
I saw her live a few years ago and had the same experience - I love her album and her style, but she was pitched so flat it was painful to listen to. Quite strange really.
I like that she doesn't scream, doesn't squeak, doesn't squeal, doesn't whisper and doesn't moan, but sings in a gentle feminine voice.
