Madeleine is what you would call "an acquired taste". She's so different and unique that most people wouldn't stick with her long enough to appreciate her style.
One of the most flattering things my mother ever said to me was that I listen to music like my grandfather. He's cool enough to get my grandma. #adonistunes

I remember stumbling across her sound and simply asking myself "who is that?". I looked her up and was like "wow". Surprised she's not bigger than what she is.
Discovered her a few years ago...fell in love with her style and voice. If she sounds a bit like 'someone' else...so what? It's a compliment to say the least. She is talented no doubt.
J aime particulierement changing all those changes.
being Swiss (French) am surprised at her almost perfect French accent. Re comment below, she always made me think that Billie Holiday's style was indeed a major inspiration. There is only one Billie.
I love her. Magical vocalizing. After listening to her 2003 "Careless Love" CD for the last few days, her renditions here are jarring to me. On the CD she lovingly caresses the melody while phrasing in a playful, percussively lovely way. Playing live here, she's left all that behind. I'm a musician, so I get jazz. But I also get melody, and I don't think melody has to be sacrificed at the alter of hip improv. Or the phrasing non-recognizable. Maybe Madeleine has been influenced by the wrong people. Or she's doing the Dylan thing of altering her songs until they can't be recognized, can't be recognized in respect to some great melodies which apparently mustn't be reflected in the hip riffs in some circles of jazz. She should have at least sang the melody first time through, as is the convention…….
***** "Most of her fans would be disappointed if she simply replicated the sounds of her recorded works with which they are already familiar, that can be safely left to the fans of mindless 'pop' who keep time on the on-beat to often lip-synched vocals." Huh? I doubt if many "fans of mindless 'pop' are into Madelyn Peyreux. I'm certainly not a fan of mindless pop, and Peyreux' albums are anything BUT. Still, the way she is performing her songs here reflects a certain strain of scat vocalizing. I'm saying I prefer melody and melodic phrasing, while I also want an artist to remain playful. But not to the extent of obliterating the melody and phrasing. One needn't be a "mindless fan" to appreciate a great melody, spontaneous playfulness, and impeccable phrasing which characterized Madelyn's albums and most of her live performances I've seen on TH-cam.
I have to agree that I'm not fond of this performance. I also think her band is predictable. I personally prefer her recorded versions of these songs. And yes, I understand that changing things up a little is typical, especially in a jazz performance, but these renditions just don't do that much for me, and I love her.
Couldn't agree more: if you didn't already know the original melodies you'd certainly never be able to learn them from these renditions. I'll stick to the CDs ...
Billie Holiday NÃO MORREU! Ela(Lady Day), REENCARNOU NESSA MULHER P/ CONTINUAR SEU TRABALHO NA MÚSICA. Exageradamente fantástica a Madeleine Peyroux!!!
I saw Maddie twice here in Portland, years before this concert. I think she lost her voice, and the singing isn't as good either. She sounds "off" here, but the band is definitely ON - I love the guitar playing especially!
The bass player is not on par with the other musician's skills... But the overal result is nice. And if I had a time-machine, I would go back in time just to marry Madeleine.
Too bad that MP has turned to a caricature of herself...Mostly simpering with an exaggerated little girl's voice, sometimes out of key (and out of tempo...) She was so good on her two or three early records, but today that mannerism spoils it all
+scottdpt12 Except she was born with that vocal register so it's not like she's doing SNL mimicry. Actually, the two voices are not that much alike in the details and I could always tell them apart by ear alone. I also hear a lot of other famous singers in there as well.
Thanks George. It's re-assuring to have some knowledge in here... :) Actually, you're totally right. Madeleine has a specific voice, unique in it's timber and pitch, no possible confusion with another voice.
It is hard to tell what she is trying to do (?) That is one hell of a self-sabotaging "rubato." Poor Jon Herington, a real pro, can't help but just frown. What a waste.
She is so outrageously behind the beat (and sometimes out of key) in her recent live shows, that I wonder how many liters of sweat it did cost to her producer and sound engineer to cut decent recordings (which are pretty good). The band is constantly paddling behind her to keep the boat afloat. But, my my, why such a mannerism to sound "jazzy" and intellectual? Just another wanna-be but can't-be (and never will be) Billie Holiday "qui bene amat bene castigat": she WAS good in her early years....
YOU ARE TOTALLY GRREAT,MERCI! MADELEINE, Karita.
Gracias.
A great artist a sensible interpreter and a very personal voice
Madeleine is what you would call "an acquired taste". She's so different and unique that most people wouldn't stick with her long enough to appreciate her style.
Merci
great performances Madeleine Peyroux

Her band is awesome as they still manage to keep time as she toys with the time signature. Laying it back, behind the beat but keeping it going.
perhaps she " toys " to much and I don't think it would be appreciated by lot of players facing such out of time .
listening to her live is different from listening to her recorded works, but it's worth it.
The song Don't wait too long was used in the movie, Last Holiday with Queen Latifah near the beginning of the movie.
Most Enjoyable!

Those who should know her, do.

Great version of Cohen's song!
Ela me da a mesma sensação da Billie Holiday, depois dela, essa é a que mais me emocionou... dentro desse estilo
Grandiosa.

nutscracker then for god sake go listen to something that makes you happy 😂😂
Hear hear !
She's like Billy?
a thing in her voice..
God, no - in another class altogether!
I saw Maddie twice here in Portland, years before this concert. I think she lost her voice, and the singing isn't as good either. She sounds "off" here, but the band is definitely ON - I love the guitar playing especially!
Modern day Billie Holiday

Inspired by Billie Holiday........
couldn't Fishman make a pickup trhat would fit better?

I like the girl but damn... we are copied by the world ....there is ONLY one BILLIE H.
Mais elle chante faux des fois!! Incroyable.Heureusement qu'elle a de bons musiciens.
un peu mou des genoux!

That voice, once so good, now seems just the wrong side of right.Still love Maddy though
She sounds like she's trying to sound like Holiday. Just sayin'
+Carlos Bailey Except she actually sings on pitch
+scottdpt12 Except she was born with that vocal register so it's not like she's doing SNL mimicry. Actually, the two voices are not that much alike in the details and I could always tell them apart by ear alone. I also hear a lot of other famous singers in there as well.

tout à fait
Nicely stated
It is hard to tell what she is trying to do (?) That is one hell of a self-sabotaging "rubato." Poor Jon Herington, a real pro, can't help but just frown. What a waste.
GROOVE § SWING needs great time . That means perfect and subtle " mise en place " she doesn't care .
She is so outrageously behind the beat (and sometimes out of key) in her recent live shows, that I wonder how many liters of sweat it did cost to her producer and sound engineer to cut decent recordings (which are pretty good). "qui bene amat bene castigat": she WAS good in her early years....
EXACTLY what I feel . Exageration ruins the effect and miss the goaL She is tasteless about toying time keeping . It sounds
like a laborious amateur .
