    Thank you very much for watching. No fans and trainspotters are to find in this area. But the security does a better job. You have to leave the line as soon as possible.

    Thank you for this excellent video. Your telephoto shots showed the rough nature of the track with lots of dropped joints. When the driver had changed the points and was about to cross the road, the van driver certainly pushed his luck! Couplings were simplicity itself! Loved it.

    It's near to the north-german city Meppen, the village is called "Rührermoor". You can see the oilfield on google.earth.

    ExxonMobile: Two American Oil Companies, which became one oil company and now they produce crude oil in Germany. Kind of makes me want to buy more ExxonMobile shares.
    Godd video, though. I hope that rail line is still in use, with all those dinky engines still running.

    Really great video, and really nice to see that an American oil company still uses a narrow gauge train rather than trucks.

      +mancunian4life86 There are several companies that use the railway system there, Exxon AFAIK being not the biggest player....
      Using this (old) peat railway is the only solution there. Trucks wont get anywhere without severe damage to the environment. There are some places where a truck would sink in and vanish in the moor....... ;)

      +Pearly Humbucker Oh that's good then. Unlike here in Indonesia, where they are just a fond of trucks.

      +Pearly Humbucker By the way, how did you get the entrance access to their plant?

    Die "schlechte" Gleislage wird durch das maximale Tele sehr gesteigert. Die Drehgestelle ("boogies") haben damit, wie angemerkt, trotz der hohen Schwerpunktlage keine Probleme. Die Tankzüge befördern ausschließlich das "Spühlwasser". Alle Pferdekopf-Pumpen sind mit dem Werk vermittels Pipelines verbunden. Etwa 800 Tonnen Öl und Wasser werden pro Tag verarbeitet, da hätte das Bähnchen reichlich zu fahren-) In Nigeria arbeitet man nicht ganz so sauber...

    A lot of money spent on rail maintenance I see. Why not a plain wheeled tractor?

    • @pearlyhumbucker9065
      @pearlyhumbucker9065 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +hughvane Tractors cant swim. And tehy do no good on moory grounds where some places are very wet and deep -. deep enough to swallow the whole machine.....
      Peat railways work on these grounds very well because the pressure on the soil ist very low, far lower than by trucks or tractors. Expensive track maintenance doesnt show good results. The ground is too soft - the rails will sink in soon after the track maintenance. This is simply "offroad on rails" - as an offroader you would not whine if at your offroading site are no paved roads?

    120 km of track is a lot of maintenance for someone to keep this going. Have they considered cheaper alternatives?

    • @the_retag
      @the_retag 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ground is to soft roads for big trucks are wider and woul be even more expensive small railways can be surprisingly cheap

    Wolfgang Cloessner: Those pumps are called 'walking beam' pumps. Smaller wells in a lot of smaller fields(and some larger ones too where the well doesn't have a high pressure due to natural gas pushing it up and out). Not fancy but they do the job and are relatively maintenance-free. In spite of the soft ground I'm really surprised at the lousy trackwork in light of German engineering expertise. Is it really that soft?

    • @pearlyhumbucker9065
      @pearlyhumbucker9065 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ShastaPacificRoad It is that soft. Its like a bit gras floating on a lake. Or thin ice on water - it cant support you. Laying a ladder on the ground you may go.... You may dig and find water in less than one foot under surface. Went there with a truck to repair some of the gravel roads. If another truck would pass by in some hundert meters my truck would shake like a boat on the waves the other truck made.......
      Regarding the lousy trackwork you must keep in mind that these trains are peat trains and they were there before the oil companies came. Peat doesnt make much money - therefore the whole system must be cheap and simple to handle. At the locations where they get the peat out of the ground re-laying tracks was sometimes daily practice, high maintanance tracks werent best practice and far too expensive.
      Obeying professional railroad regulations related to trackwork for a normal railroad in a swamp is expensive and needs far more effort than a regular railroad track on solid ground. Nobody would want to pay for something like that on a peat railway..... ;)

      +Pearly Humbucker Wow, thanks for the info. I'm somewhat of a narrow-gauge railroad fan but I do cringe when I see some of the trackwork that seems to cry out for a Plasser & Theurer track machine crew to re-do it!!!. I didn't know about the tracklaying on peat ground so finding out about is great as it's not something you normally run into, or I haven't anyway. I'm more familiar with standard railroading here in the US with a bit of knowledge about logging railroading where tracks are moved around as the areas being logged change. Really appreciate the info!

    • @gravelydon7072
      @gravelydon7072 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ShastaPacificRoad, In The Big Cypress Swamp in Florida they had to lay trees both ways under the track to keep it from sinking in. A corduroy railroad instead of a corduroy road. In some places the logs were 6 or 7 layers thick before it held. When they finished logging that area and pulled the tracks up,they sent those logs off to the mill. When they laid new track, they just cut new trees for the new section.
      They would have to do something along the same lines to keep the peat tracks on the mainline from sinking in. More like a floating bridge than solid ground.
