O Holy Night - The Rachmaninoff Way

  • Every Christmas I get asked to play O Holy Night nearly one hundred times for singers, but never as a solo. So I started wondering what it might sound like as a piano solo, and what if Rachmaninoff had made a piano transcription for it? A little fun for Christmas, O Holy Night the Rachmaninoff Way. This was recorded in my home on my Steinway D with a stereo pair of Rode NT-5 mics, a Zoom H4N recorder, and a Canon 70D DSLR. One take was synced in Adobe Premiere Pro C5. Merry Christmas!

The years go by, and I look for something special at Christmas each year. There are a lot of renditions of this piece to be found, but the simplicity of form and surroundings makes this performance absolutely heart-blowing! Thank you so much, Tim, for giving this to the world.

I NEVER give props on TH-cam but that my friend was GREAT. I play piano myself. Performed the Rach 2 before, (it's on my TH-cam page) and loved how you integrated the 2nd and 3rd movements, as well as Rhapsody on a theme by Paganinni....
I found this video because I was thinking how cool would it be if Rachmaninoff was recorded playing some Christmas music, but this is almost just as good. Very well done!! If you'd like to collaborate sometime, I think it would be worth talking about. I might be able to open a few doors as well!
Send me a message if interested!!
    Thanks,
    Mike Murray

I liked this video for 2 reasons: 1) because of the beautiful performance of the music but, sorry, 2) because you played barefoot - I always play barefoot because it make me (in my mind) feel more comfortable and grounded. I also like the narration of why you are performing the music as you do. Beautiful video.

Tim, a member of your church who's a distant relative shared this amazing video on Facebook last night shortly after you uploaded it. Incredible work on all fronts! Would you be willing to share sheet music, by any chance? I'd absolutely love to learn this.

J.B. there is not any sheet music, but I'll tell you the layout of the piece. I started with Rachmaninoff Concerto No.2, the second movement and dropped it to Db Major to use as the bed for the hymn. The first deviation from O Holy Night is into the third movement of Rach 2 straight off the page in Db Major. Back to the hymn with a little embellishment, then meandering through a little Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (the 18th variation specifically), then back into a final run at O Holy Night with an improvised ending similar to the ending of Rach 2 again. Hope that helps!

Hi, Tim! I, too, would love to be able to obtain the sheet music if you have had a chance to transcribe it in the past 2 years since this reply to J.B. What a gorgeous arrangement. I am so completely enthralled with it. You have a brilliantly creative mind. God bless you.

Needs more soaring arpeggios to sound like rachmaninoff imho. This is more like a rach medley. But good work
