Why not? You can be 2x faster by crossing your feet. Why are coaches still teaching their defenders to be slow?
@18:00 lol the defender is trying to play defense like coach said and he gets blown by.
I’d imagine if you cross your feet together, you can’t easily react to a defender when they switch direction. If you’re open, you may be slower, but [I think] you’d be able to get more explosiveness to switch directions and catch up to a crafty ball handler

Biomechanically - Primarily Balance and Lack of Mobility when feet are not acting as a stable base for movement. In order to get faster you drop step and run while looking and playing the ball....which is faster than crossing your legs together anyway.
