    I had a love hate relation ship with the Form3's I used at work.
    Getting a job set up was pretty damn easy. Using the machine was very user friendly. Prints are much more durable than typical resin prints.
    However, their cheapest resin was still crazy expensive at $150 a liter.
    Their Vats's also cost $150 and DO NOT have a replaceable film, so when it wears out you gotta buy a whole new one.
    Customer service is ok, but the solutions they give straight out of the gate will seem like they didn't even bother to read the ticket, which can get frustrating at times.
    For a company that can afford it, it's a pretty good machine, but no one should ever be buying one of these if they are just a hobbyist.

    • @TheHelicapt

      What is a good hobbist machine that offers a level of convenience and print success like this?
      I'm using a 201x? Ender 3 pro that's pretty modified. I feel like I've mastered it, and want to go up to a new printer: either bigger build volume or higher success rate.

    • @CraftySven
      @CraftySven ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. The resin is sooo expensive in comparison to other resin printers. And formlabs are a closed ecosystem company as they only allow their resin selection to be used. I use these at work and they are reliable, but the cost per part is too much, especially if the customers are students who don't have much money to spare.

    • @barrag3463
      @barrag3463 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where I worked we also had a few issues with the chips on the cartridges not registering or in the case of vats registering an impossible nine-hundred-something month age for a new vat. Vats thankfully have the option to ignore that and use them anyways, but the cartridges required more creative thinking, like using paper to hold the cart just right so the chip was still in contact. You could maybe refill a cart, but I don't think the chip would let you use a cart after it was "empty" (never tried because I didn't want to mess with a 130-150 dollar cart, even if my boss was open to experimenting).
      Print failures also went up if we used Elastic Resin, but I think that may have just been more a issue of there being no good orientation and support settings for what we were printing. The cost of that and the smell when you had to clean up a failure certainly made it more demoralizing though.
      They're certainly nice machines but many of the "convenience" features relating to the machine's operation itself boil down to "they've made parts of the machine consumable so you can simply swap it out instead of paying someone with knowhow to fix it (at monetary cost to you still)." For personal use I'm happier with my Mars 2 Pro anyhow, and I'd recommend the "lower end" MSLA machines over the SLA ones to hobbyists any day of the week. Faster and cheaper than the Forms, and perfectly adequate for what most people are going to be printing on their machines.

    3d printing needs automation to be a viable mass-production method. For mass production, the bottleneck is never print speed, it is human labor. The ability to print a bucket of parts over a weekend is huge compared to having to go back to the printer every single time.

    My experience with the Formlabs products is that they are very expensive to purchase and operate. You are locked in to proprietary materials and eco system. I replaced a pair of Form 2 with consumer grade products that were faster, used consumables that were 1/3 the cost, and could be thrown out every year and still save money.

    • @extectic
      @extectic ปีที่แล้ว

      There's always cheaper, but good luck getting some Chinese manufacturer to develop automation for the stuff they've already sold, for instance. You always pay extra for quality, for support, for reliability. Nothing new there.

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@extectic The thing is, I could recreate this with like $100 in parts, and it would work with anything with that type of bed, and parametric for any sized machine. Also their design could be simplified since there is no limitation on a linear actuator not being simply fixed to the build plate pull tabs, but minor critique.
      I've got my personal machines much more consistent and higher accuracy, and much less maintenance, and much faster than the machines at work. Mine also do the same size or bigger (13x13x15") and mine were less than $300, defeating $5k and $10k machines. The only cool thing is one of our machines at work can hold like 8 spools, but ironically the best upgrade was some PVC pipe where I made a stand for it so it could hold some larger 5 KG rolls (so much nicer than having to reload small spools all the time).
      I've also found the more expensive machines to be more proprietary and locked down, and even their starting sequence often ignores CURA for example so it often wastes a lot of time redoing the bed level mesh (while my machines remember it unless you manually push the button or start your Gcode with it, saving a lot of time and keeping them more consistent). I'm just not a big fan of closed source, you are at the mercy of the developer to fix even the smallest of issues, and then they don't even update their change logs accurately...

    This for resin printers is the stuff, like the belt fdm printers were nice but lacked most of the resolution of a well tuned fdm out of the box

    I thought this would move the print into a washing/curing box then pop it when it's done washing/curing. this is a lot of hardware for just simply popping the print, which then user has to wash and cure manually

      It’s popping the prints - plural. The idea being the machine can automatically for a weekend is key. Producing a batch of parts that can then be washed and cured.

      I also thought it would do this, like the SLAminator.

    Automatic part removal, and job queuing seems kind of pointless without some automated resin refill process. Does it hold a ton of resin or something, or does it have an auto feed system that wasn't mentioned?

      Honestly shouldn't be that hard with a simple hose and large bucket (just have it siphon into itself, it will maintain the level at which your huge bucket is).

      Formlabs printers have come with an auto fill system for years now
