Master: What's wrong? Rani: It's our speed. It's increasing. Master: Then reduce it! Rani: YOU ASININE CRETIN, WHAT DO YOU IMAGINE I'M TRYING TO DO?!? God, I love these two xD
The Rani's ship has always been one of my favourite TARDIS designs, taking established principles and working them in a slightly different direction. I especially liked the touch controls and the time gyro on the console. Some real thought went into the making of that set.
As awful as Dimensions in Time is, I also really love the Rani’s TARDIS in that too. It was close to the 80’s era aesthetic of the Doctor’s TARDIS, but the lighting gave it a very cool vibe.
I loved the Rani's Tardis. I thought it was great that the set designers came up with something different from the Doctor's instead of just using the same set but making it look dark. I remember being disappointed in the next Rani story that the console did not feature in it as it was such a great design!
This episode was hilarious. The Master and the Doctor being drama queens and the poor Rani in the middle just wanting them both to get out of her house.
That is basically the Rani. The Doctor wants to save everyone, The Master wants power over everyone and The Rani is just off to the side like I don't give a shit about any of this.
Besides the fact that the rani’s Tardis interior and even the lighting on the exterior is brilliant to today’s standards. Its hilarious to know that the rani has one of those grow a dinosaur toys, except it only grows out of water rather than in.
The Doctor ...except the lack of a soft-release mechanism for the on-console monitor. It's a bit cheap how it pops out and then judders when it hits its final position rather than sliding smoothly into place. Must've been the old-school Hyundai instead of the new-age Hyundai workmanship... =-P
They should she certainly was elsewhere when the time war took place. So she is still alive. Classic who mentioned were other renegade Timelords. So the Doctor is only living Timelord was always nonsense.
@withintemptationrock Anthony Ainley, he really was a treasure. He loved playing the Master so much, he wouldn't take any other parts. He would even answer his phone THIS IS THE MASTER! (evil laugh)
I love The Doctor's various TARDIS interiors obviously. But I've always been slightly irked by how obviously earthly they are, especially in its default state. But the Rani's with it's circular console, touch controls and strange gyro rotor feels very alien to me. They did a really good job with it
Observation: basically, the console repeats the same two panel designs along the entire circumference of the operational desk. You see one segment that is virtually filled with a round indented pop-up screen with a few touch-buttons and the one next to it featuring the large discs with touch-buttons and keys clustered around them. There is three of one and three of the other. This made it possible to shoot the console from any camera angle or mount it on the set and easily maintain a visual consistency with each console room scene in the episode. If the prop were to be reused, there wouldn't be a problem with the "wrong" panels being in view from scene to scene (or episode to episode if that set were ever reused) and the actor would always be at the "correct" controls. It also doubtlessly made for an easier job to simply use the same two sets of mouldings to produce the entire console instrumentation for the prop. For an in-universe explanation, we can surmise that each control set is multifunctional and can be switched from one application to another at the pilot's convenience regardless of her actual position at the unit. It makes for a wonderfully streamlined design that looks like a functional piece of technology from a very advanced culture and is also visually pleasing on screen.
You also see them looking at the time rotor rather than a screen, which implies some kind of advanced display tech we can't see. Maybe some kind of telepathic display/HUD compared to the screens and gauges of the Doctor's TARDIS?
@@techno1561 No. If you recall, at one point the Rani and the Master look at a view outside her TARDIS on one of the large pop-up roundels on the console, so her ship still has visual display screens.
This is the only way new Who can be saved. Hire great writers and have a new Doctor, new Master, and new Rani. Interweave stories in where the Doctor is doing his normal thing, trying to help while trying to escape with the new master and the Rani chasing after him. That's Season 1 right there. If they do it right it would be incredible and it would save the franchise.
@94kathryn With the Master, its gotta be Roger Delgado, no question. He was just so suave, yet downright scary. Every other Master actor was living in his shadow, I think. And its got to be Tom, of course, for the best Doctor. I don't actually know who would be the second best, because everyone else is very good in their own different styles. They all bring forth qualities that make the essential character of the Doctor, Tom Baker was just this perfect storm of all of them at once.
@concertinasoup Me too. Six and Peri had a great relationship dynamic. And this particulary episode made me laugh so much back when I first saw it, expecially the Master's ill-fated attempts to flirt with the Rani. As you see, it didn't end well XD Poor Master, they always wiped the floor with him back in the classic series.
tsk - 'an unearthly child' is every bit as much as milestone in the history of doctor who (and indeed tv sci-fi of all genres) as the first episode of star trek or any of its offspring :)
It was funny that The Rani kicked The Master in his stomach while they were arguing during their escape from the collapsing mine. It was also funny that 1 of the dinosaurs that The Rani took as a prized specimen got to grow inside her TARDIS because The Doctor had sabotaged her controls when he got inside it with his key before they did when they were both trying to defeat him.
The gravity would have pinned the creature to the wall as well. So it only goes free when they do - and being that they are Timelords in a Tardis - I think they then could handle the creature. So the "escape" did make sense.
I was actually thinking about this, the first 3 episodes of stranger are doctor who without name, all that needs is just to put the 6th doctor's intro in front of it. And the exit music to be replaced. If one wants to get more in depth I would say add a snippet of a classic who clip of the TARDIS flying in space into the scene where the planet blows up in more then a Messiah, a TARDIS shot from twin delimma would work in sommoned by shadows as it's the same location, thou one could theorise that it takes place within between that episode, so often thought of mixing the twin delimma and summoned by shadows together.
Think having Rani back would be good, think she would work well now. Bring back the Master to and could explore his and Rani's relationship more, show another side to Master
You know, Kate O'Mara is excellent. In just one story, excellent, (I know she came back but I'm just talking MotR here). Her TARDIS is intriguing, she's well played, original and has a different motivation than our other TL friends. I wish the new series wasn't so obsessed with gender-swapping male characters and instead would take a chance and invent another someone as unique as the Rani, a woman who owes nothing to nobody. Great job, Kate.
Isn't it about time the Rani appeared in the revival? As an egotistica, amoral scientist she would never have gotten her hands dirty and got involved in actual fighting, she would have stayed well away and would obviously have survived the Time War.
You know, it's probably great that The Rani and The Master never went to the "Star Wars" universe. ESPECIALLY during Vader's reign; Lord only knows what atrocities those three and Palpatine could accomplish together.
Too bad that the Doctor wasn't successful in making sure neither the Master nor the Rani will return to cause trouble in the Universe after sabotaging the Rani's TARDIS. It was good that the Rani kicked the Master in his stomach before taking off. Also too bad that 1 of the dinosaurs that the Rani took for studying didn't get to eat her or the Master after it started to grow when it fell out of the glass jar after it broke because of the Rani's ship going so fast.
A surprise that the dinosaur that started to grow after the thing that it was in fell to the floor while the Rani's TARDIS was moving fast didn't get to eat up the Rani & the Master so that they wouldn't cause any more trouble, and that they never felt sorry for all the evil they have done.
Too bad that 1 of those dinosaurs in the Rani‘s TARDIS didn‘t eat her & the Master up after the Doctor sabotaged the evil renegade Time Lady‘s ship. The Universe wouldn‘t miss them if that happened.
Master: What's wrong?
Rani: It's our speed. It's increasing.
Master: Then reduce it!
Rani: YOU ASININE CRETIN, WHAT DO YOU IMAGINE I'M TRYING TO DO?!?
God, I love these two xD
thank goodness for classic who!
xD

The Rani is great. If they put her in New Who,. they'll ruin her.
The Rani's ship has always been one of my favourite TARDIS designs, taking established principles and working them in a slightly different direction. I especially liked the touch controls and the time gyro on the console. Some real thought went into the making of that set.
LordZontar I would use The Rani's tardis as my tardis I just really like it and it seems pretty cool
And it had a dinosaur in a jar! BEAT THAT
Shane ur was only used once.
The set was ordered to be kept by JNT, but obvioudly by 1987 it was trashed anyway :(
As awful as Dimensions in Time is, I also really love the Rani’s TARDIS in that too. It was close to the 80’s era aesthetic of the Doctor’s TARDIS, but the lighting gave it a very cool vibe.

Loved the Rani's console room! The rotor itself is a work of art.

+chase1146 dont need now thx
+chase1146 In my head-canon Missy was the Rani....
Kate O'Mara was perfect for the role and had a natural villainous flare.
I think the Master had a secret crush. And that inspired him to eventually regenerate into Missy.
She also looked really good in those pants ;-)
I still remember the first time I ever saw this back in the late 1980's . It was so exciting to see three Time Lords go at it !
More like two timelords and one time lady(female term for timelord)
For the time, that TARDIS design is pretty genius! Just as good as anything the new series has produced!
I will NEVER get sick of watching the Rani knee the Master in the groin. CLASSIC.
At the time when the budget for the show was so poor they created a fantastic Tardis for the Rani.
I like The Rani's tardis in this episode even the console room it's very unique
Especially dat time rotor! ^_^
+Kryojenix everything about the rani's tardis in this story is amazing
The Doctor ...except the lack of a soft-release mechanism for the on-console monitor.

AW MAN i missed this ep wait i can buy it nvm
The Rani: The only Doctor Who character badass enough to kick the Master in the balls. They really need to bring this chick back in the new series.
Since that "Dimensions in Time" Children in Need special isn't considered canon whatever happened to The Rani anyway?
They should she certainly was elsewhere when the time war took place. So she is still alive. Classic who mentioned were other renegade Timelords. So the Doctor is only living Timelord was always nonsense.
Lithium Helix. she might be dead that ep was made LONG ago
They could, you know, use a different actress with similar build?
Peter Senior Or regenerate...
This is why I never try to time travel when there's a live velociraptor nearby. Too risky.

I think that tardis interior is my favorite of all the one ever shown, including the Doctor's.
easily one of the best ways the doctor has gone 'one up' on two of his best enemies.
I love The Doctor's various TARDIS interiors obviously. But I've always been slightly irked by how obviously earthly they are, especially in its default state. But the Rani's with it's circular console, touch controls and strange gyro rotor feels very alien to me. They did a really good job with it
It seems like it could be a futuristic version of the Doctor's TARDIS with the touch controls, which fits with his being an antique.
The Rani’s TARDIS is Amazing!
Rani is a hot villainess.
1:25-1:26 - Master's got nards...
This was my first Colin story and it's very underrated
The Rani needs to come back to the new series.
She's pretty, and love her voice

2:50 what an adorable smile 🥰 Nicola Bryant was so beautiful 😍
I think Katie Mcgrath(Morgana in Merlin) would make an awesome Rani against Matt Smith's 11th doctor.
a.. how the master and the Rani GET ALONG SO WELL!
Kate O'Mara was a g/d treasure. So was Anthony Ainley. This is almost as much fun as Pertwee/Delgado. :-)
